UPDATE 6/26/08 - Thunder is doing great! He just had his second "Birthiversary" with us. He is now seven and
been a member of our family for two years! We cannot believe it! Thunder just got a new toy that we call "The Beav".
He loves playing with all his toys and still brings them to the door for us when we come in. As I type this, he is
sleeping on the couch taking an afternoon nap. Thunder is always eager to go for a ride, no matter how long! He
also had his check up last month and the vet said he was just perfect. We just love him so much and cannot believe
how fast these two wonderful years have gone. Thank you SCBR and the Dills for all that you do!
UPDATE 10/28/07 - Thunder is doing terrific! He is looking forward to our Halloween Trick-O-Treat Party and oh boy
does he look handsome in his Elvis cape! He is still the same great guy he was when he joined our family in June
2006. We love him more and more each day. A few of his favorite toys seem to be wearing out all at the same time,
so hopefully Santa will fill his stocking with a bunch of new goodies. Thank you to the Dill's and SCBR for all that you
do!
UPDATE 6/21/07 Today is Thunder's "Birthiversary"!! He turns six today and he has been a part of our family for one
year today! He is doing terrific and we love him so much. We cannot believe how fast this year has gone by. He
loves his stuffed toys and going for rides in the car. He gets so excited about going in the car that we have to spell
the word ride. He enjoys going for walks and strutting around the neighborhood. Everyone that meets him thinks
that he is such a good boy. He just had his yearly physical last week and the vet said he is in great health. All of a
sudden we have come home a few times after he has stayed by himself and we have found a loaf of bread sitting by
the front door unopened. Another time a birthday cake container was overturned on the counter, but the messiest of
all was when he tore open his brand new bag of dog food. Naturally it was the huge bag of food. We are just so
happy to have him in our family. He has brought so much joy to our lives and we just love him. The poor guy doesn't
get much rest during the day because one of us is always kissing or snuggling him. He does sleep with Mom and
Dad and is quite a bed hog and snorer! It has been a fantastic year and we look forward to many fun-filled years
ahead! Thank you SCBR and the Dill's for all that you do!
UPDATE 1/29/07 - Thunder is doing terrific. He went through obedience class and graduated in October. As far as
his health, he is doing great. We did bring him to the vet in the fall because we thought he may have had some type
of seizure. The vet said it would be hard to tell, but nothing else has happened since. He had a fantastic Christmas.
Santa was very good to him, his stocking was full and he had many presents under the tree! Everyone just loves
him. He is such a gentlemen to everyone. He enjoys going for walks and loves going for rides. When we talk about
going for a ride we have to spell out "ride" because he jumps up and runs for the door. A new things he does is bring
a stuffed toy from his toy basket to the door to greet us when we come home. Thunder is quite the snorer and a huge
bed hog. We are going to have to up-grade to a king size so that we will be able to have some room. He does not
care for snacks. We keep trying new kinds, but we will be bringing a few more bags to the MSPCA. He is so
wonderful, we just love him so much. He is just so precious and has added so much to our lives. We are very, very
thankful to have him in our family! We would love to adopt another Boxer, but are unsure how Thunder would be.
Thank you Dill's and SCBR for all that you do for these boxers!
UPDATE 8/26/06 - Thunder has been part of our family for just over two months now and is doing wonderful! We
have tried to get Thunder to eat all sorts of different "treats' without success. After talking with Foster Mom Judy, we
discovered that Thunder enjoys pieces of grilled steak, as well as pieces of cheese. Glad we got that mystery
solved! Thunder just registered us for obedience classes that are beginning next week. We are all looking forward
to it. He really is settling in and is definitely one of the family. He has a favorite spot on the couch and our bed! He
loves everyone and everyone loves him. He did meet his cousin "Harvey" a 6 year old Golden Retriever and the
meeting went well. They have since spent about four hours together one evening running around my sister's house,
with four kids ranging in age from 9 years to 1-1/2 years chasing them around! It was fun. We went to the dog park
the other evening for about an hour hour and during that time he challenged a Bull Mastiff (naturally, the biggest dog
there!) at least 7 or 8 times. The Mastiff didn't want much to do with Thunder, he was more interested in playing fetch.
Thunder did have one issue with another dog at his Foster Home, so I am always concerned when he is with other
dogs. After the Basic Manners class he is enrolled in, I think we will continue on with a few more classes, they even
have a playgroup too. Looks like Thunder is going to be busy!! Thanks again to SCBR for all that you do for the
Boxers and their families!
UPDATE 7/16/06 - We just love Thunder! He is so perfect for us, we are so glad he is part of our family!
Thunder is doing super. He has had a great appetite since the beginning, although he doesn't seem to like treats
too much. Foster Mom told us that he liked a squeaking hedgehog (I think that is what it was)so we got him a
squeaking squirrel and we call it "squeakers" and he loves to play with it.
We have taken him in the car with us several times for long drives and he does great.
I am not familiar with using a crate, although for the first 10 days or so we used it at night, we felt guilty putting him in
it if we had to run to the mall or something. We left him alone upstairs for about an hour, uncrated and when we
came home there were two surprises on the floor. He seems to have a great sense of humor because he found a
sock and covered up his "business", certainly hoping that we would not find it.
We have taken him to our local vet and the doctor said he was great and loved his coat. He has had his first lyme
vaccination, as well as another one that has slipped my mind. The vet said that they stopped giving this particular
vaccination for a number of years, but a few dogs in our area have had this particular disease and two have died.
Our next item is to get him registered in an obedience class. I am going to Alaska next week, so as soon as I return,
we will call Deanna and get her recommendation for a school. Thunder will be staying home with Dad and the kids,
probably having way too much fun.
Thunder is such a wonderful dog. Tim and I will just sit at night talking and Thunder will be right there with us
snoring away. We just cannot believe how gentle and loving he is. He is definitely a people person. He seems to
follow me around the most. If I go down stairs to do laundry, in the beginning the kids would tell me he would cry at
the door.
He loves to be on the couch with us. He sleeps on our bed and doesn't make a peep all night long. After being with
us for almost one month now, I will even get up in the morning and he will look up at me and put his head back
down, which I take as a sign that he is quite comfortable in his forever home.
We took him to a dog park about 1-1/2 weeks ago. The park was all fenced in and there were about half dozen dogs
there already. He just loved it! We were nervous to take him off the leash, as he did not enjoy meeting a fellow Boxer
on our road. One of the other "Moms" came over, I assume because we looked like we didn't know what we were
doing, and took the time to talk with us and reassure our son who was so afraid that Thunder would somehow
escape or be hurt by another dog. With her coaxing Thunder was unleashed! What a time he had with the other
dogs. They all behaved and were just playing great together.. There was puppy there and she and Thunder were
playing and he knocked her to the ground and she just rolled onto her back and Thunder put his paw gently on her
stomach and then just stood there waiting for her to get up. It was cute. He would just run by us (our son was
following close behind just to make sure he did not jump the 6 foot chainlink fence with three rows of barbed wire
one it!)acting as if he didn't know us. I think I got a taste of how our kids will be as teenagers at the mall with us! I
had a tear in my eye as he was playing, it was so precious!
He has met his Grammie and Grampa, they just love him too. We bring him over there with us and he is good at
their house. He has an Auntie and and Uncle and two young cousins that love him as well. He has not met his
cousin "Harvey", who is a 6 year old golden retreiver. I am nervous for them to meet since Thunder did not do well
with the neighboring Boxer. Our plan is to bring them to the dog park and have them meet there on neutral territory. I
am looking forward to their meeting because we see my sister and her family often and it would be great for the
"boys" to get along.
I don't want to continue to babble on and on about how much we love Thunder and cannot even imagine a day
without him here! We feel so fortunate to have him in our lives, hopefully he feels the same way about us!
Hold on....Thunder said to say hello to his Foster Family and thank them for taking such good care of him for the five
months they had him.
Thank you to Second Chance Boxer Rescue and all of the volunteers for all of the time and effort you put in to "saving"
these Boxers so they can each have a loving family to call their own.
By the way...did I mention how much we just love and adore Thunder!?!
With much thanks for all you do, Thunder's Mom,
6/21/06 - Thunder has been adopted!
6/20/06 - My foster mom told me she is afraid she is going to be fired as a foster home, she hasn't updated me in so
long. Since she has been busy I decided to take things into my own hands (er, paws) again and do it myself. I don't
want mom to get in trouble. Let's see where to start, things have been going good here at my foster home. Mom and
dad took a little trip a couple weekends ago, so I got to go and stay at my good friend the vets. They really like me
there and have lots of treats. Dad made sure that they knew just how I like to have my food fixed so that I would eat
while they were gone. The ladies there that come in to walk me think I'm pretty cute they told me so, they also told
Dad I was a very good boy while I was there. They did come and get me once and poke me with a needle. I'm not
really sure why they did that but they told me it was negative whatever that means. Mom seemed glad of that too so I
guess that is good news. Oh yeah, last weekend we had a house guest here, it was Bubba's mother she came up
from the south just to see how Bubba was doing. She really seemed to like me too, she knows alot about dogs, I
can just tell. She said she used to be a foster mom too. I got to sit in her lap and cuddle. I love to meet new people
and if they will let me I will cuddle right up in their laps. I heard her tell mom she thinks I'm a good boy and she can't
understand why I haven't been adopted yet. I'm not sure what ADOPTED means but it sounds nice. Mom tells me I'm
waiting for my forever home. I sure hope that forever home comes along soon. I really would like to have a persons
lap of my very own to cuddle in. Sincerely, The boxer boy in waiting-Thunder
5/11/06 - Thunder is still here at his foster home. He, like his foster family is wondering why he has not been
adopted yet. Thunder is a sweet boy who really needs someone to love and be loved by. Maybe one thing that is
holding him back and making people consider other dogs is his age? Thunder doesn't act 6 years old, if we didn't
know he was 6 that would not be a guess any of us would make. The is really muscular and runs like the wind! He
loves to play like a puppy and will fetch a ball or other toy for hours. I had a tennis ball today and was throwing it for
him, the phone rang and I went to answer it when I came back he was tossing it around by himself and batting at it
with his feet! He is also old enough so that if you just want him to sit at your feet or cuddle in your lap he is just as
happy doing that. Thunder is a dog that just wants to be with you. If the kids are downstairs playing video games he
is right there cuddled up with them, just one of the boys. Thunder is working on some obedience in his foster home.
He knows sit and stay, walks okay on a leash. We make him sit and stay for his supper and sometimes the thought
of the good food gets the better of him. You will see him start to drool just a little but he is a good boy he waits until
you say it is okay to eat. If you are looking for a loyal, loveable companion then Thunder is the boy for you! Let's not
make him wait any longer for his forever home.
2/27/06 - Hi all, We took some new pictures of Thunder our foster boy. He is super cuddly and friendly and just
wants to be with you. I don't understand why there hasn't been more interest in him. I think he is adoreable. Maybe
it's his ears holding him back?????
2/26/06 - Thunder is settling into his foster home nicely. He went to the vets and was neutered, everyone there fell in
love with this sweet boy! He really is a good catch if you are looking for a mellow easy going fellow who just wants a
family to call his own thunder is your guy. The more we get to know him the more we like him. We have discover that
he loves to cuddle and will carefully fit himself into your lap. He will sit up straight and put his head on your shoulder
like he is a baby. Luckily he doesn't weigh a whole lot. :o) Thunder looks so sad, I think he knows that he is only
here temporarily while waiting for a family of his own. Every now and then he will just bust out in wiggles but for the
most part he is expectantly waiting for something. I think he is waiting for his new family to come and get him.
Thunder plays well with the other dogs here but he is not the kind of dog that really needs a dog companion to be
happy. He would be just as happy with a companion of the human kind. Thunder loves to go for rides and sits nicely
and the car and will wait while you run your errands. Although this time of year he needs his jacket as he really
doesn't have any body fat to keep him warm. Thunder really needs a family to spoil him and shower him with love.
Could that be your family?
2/3/06 - Let me introduce you to our newest guest here at the Thunder and Lightening boxer retreat. His name just
happens to be Thunder. He came to us from some very caring people at one of the local veterinary hospitals. His
owner had boarded him with them for several months and was unable to reclaim him due to circumstances beyond
his control. They made some calls and were referred to Second Chance. Thunder arrive last night and took to the
yard immediately. He spent a couple of hours running and playing with the residents and other guest here, after that
he slept all night in his crate without a peep. Thunder is 6 years old although you would never guess that to look at
him or watch him in action. He is a beautiful redish flashy fawn with cropped ears and a docked tail. As you can see
from some of the pictures his ears fold over on top of his head most of the time. I think this gives him extra
personality as if he is wearing a unusual hat. I think in reality it was probably a crop that went bad at one point and
his ears didn't stand up as they should. Thunder is not yet neutered but we have made the appointment and will
have that taken care of next week. Thunder is a little on the thin side but that is probably due to the stress of being at
the kennel the last few months. This guy is a cutey and a great catch, I'm sure he won't be visiting with us for long. If
you need a energetic boxer boy in you life get that application in today.
