UPDATE 9/18/06 - Tesse has adjusted fine. She is always happy to see us and to play with us. As you
know she had a problem with what we call closet bitting. Out of no were and for no reason she would
bite. So we had a trainer come in that cost $180.00 per hour and help her out with this problem. Well
$1450.00 latter she still will bite if my 3 yr old gets to loud or when she meets someone new. The
someone new is only on occassion,it's not everyone she meets but once in awhile she will snap at
someone.
Because of this we never had at a family function or on a vaction with us.Other than being on our toes
from time to time she is as quiet as a mouse and for the most part very, very sweet. Tesse has already
staked her claim to our love seat and now Jenni sits on the floor at night to watch TV so Tesse can
sleep on her couch. Other then that darn snapping from time to time she has made our house complete.
Hopefully as Tesse settles in more that snapping will stop and my next update will be more stories about
the fun we have together.
UPDATE 8/9/06 - Where do I begin. Tesse is a wonderful dog most of the time. She doesn't bark or
jump unless she is invited to jump and she really loves to play, but when you say it's over she stops right
away.
The problem that we encountered with Tesse is she is what we call a closet bitter. After we had for
about a week my parents came over to spend a day with kids and see the new dog and after she had
spent about 4 hrs bonding with my father she bit him on the hand. Tesse and my father spent the whole
day together. Where ever he went she went and then out of nowere she jumped and bit his hand
causing him to go to the hospital. I have a very good friend who is at my house about 3-4 days out of
the week and once in a while she will snap at him with no warning.
We are now working with a trainer who seems to be helping her a lot and we a feeling a lot more
comfortable around peaple.
Julie which ever forster told you that Tesse was gentle enough that you would be able to take a steak
out of her mouth well she was right or should I say a londen briol. On sunday I started the grill and my
wife came out and said the meat is ready for the grill and on the kitchen counter but when I went in to
get it Tesse had gotten up on the counter and pulled the raw meat down and ate about half of it. She
said it was good even raw LOL but it was very easy to pull it out of her mouth.
Well thats about all for now. Tesse is becoming a wonderful dog with a little help from her freinds and
we wouldn't trade for the world.
7/9/06 - Tesse has been adopted!
7/2/06 - Tesse came back today after getting staples instead of stitches. That pretty little kidney bean
she does was wreaking havoc on her surgery site, so back she went to the vet to get something a little
sturdier. She was definitely glad to be back with us, and we are glad to have her. She is a lovely dog
in all ways. She has wonderful manners – she is not a jumper, does not pull on the leash, does not
jump on the furniture uninvited, goes into her crate without a fuss and stays quiet when she is in it, and
has never had a single accident in the house. We’ve determined that she is completely dependable
with children under 4, in fact, she and my almost-two year old son are great pals. The ability to do well
with small children is a common trait in this breed and Tesse has it in abundance.
We’re also pretty certain she will not be a great fit in a home with cats – unless her family has
cats that run like the wind and don’t mind living elsewhere when Tesse is home! Our cat continues
to be grateful for the wonders of crates – and we always warn him ahead of time when its time for
Miss Tesse to be let out of her confinement.
This is a truly wonderful little girl. She has all the best traits of a boxer – she is energetic, graceful,
and wants nothing more than to be with you and be your best friend. She is trustworthy around children
and with other dogs, and she is well-behaved with guests. Whether you are looking to adopt your first
boxer because you’ve heard so many wonderful things about this breed, or if you’re looking to
bring home your fourth dog because you love all that there is about these dogs, take a look at this
beautiful little face and look no further!
6/20/06 - Since last posting we have had a chance to test a few more things with Tesse and I have to
tell everyone how impressed I am with this girl.
She shows no sign of being food aggressive, not even when I got confident and put my hand right down
the side of her face into her bowl. She is somewhat of a dainty eater, even with yogurt and scrambled
egg in her food. I am going to make some chicken for her tonight and see if that doesn’t give her
taste buds a little thrill. It is going to be hard to put weight on her if she doesn’t cooperate with the
whole eating thing – and I can’t seem to convince her that the Twiggy look just isn’t for her!
She also handles being approached suddenly or startled with no sign of fear or defensive behavior. She
will look at whomever is coming near her, then continue what she was doing without getting upset.
Most importantly, she has met all three dogs and each intro has gone extremely well. I expected her to
do well with my boys and she did. With my older boy, after a few sniffs and some tail wiggling, she
ignored him to go to John and get some petting. She was comfortable to sniff around and do her thing
without worrying about the other dog. My younger male was more interested in her than she in him, but
it didn’t seem to bother her much that he was as interested. She is a very confident girl, and not
submissive. With my female mastiff there was one minor scuffle, but no surprise, Tesse was the dog
who asserted herself and my other dog dropped flat and gave ground. Once that was established they
sniffed and even started doing a little play bowing before we called it a day and let Tesse go rest. I
have seen some signs of play in her, and I am pretty certain that once her incisions are healed and we
can let her go a little more we will see a very athletic and graceful girl. For now we are restricting her
free time and giving her plenty of time to heal.
She has seen our cat – and decided he might be a nice treat if she could catch him. She doesn’t
seem aggressive, but he ran, and she would have really liked to give chase. I didn’t get the
impression she wanted to do any damage, but she was definitely interested! We will try some more
leashed meetings and report on how things go.
This is just one really nice girl, she is affectionate, gives lovely little kisses and hugs, and has an excellent
temperament overall. She will do fine in a family with children and with other dogs. As boxers go she
seems pretty laid back, but that might be more a result of her surgery and recent incarceration. I think,
though, that she is just the kind of dog that takes things in stride. She is truly well adjusted and positive,
not to mention being excellent on a leash, house trained and crate-trained. If you want a lovebug who
has all of the best of the boxer traits, get your applications in for this girl, I do not think she will be in
rescue very long!
6/19/06 - Our new foster girl has arrived. We drove to pick her up from the vet in PA today. Tesse
had her spay surgery and a couple of masses removed from her ovaries. No more litters for this sweet
girl! She was picked up as a stray and ran out of time at the shelter…looks like she’s had several
litters. She is about 4 years old. She is not the least bit hand shy or fearful, so I’d say she’s
been treated very well by whoever was lucky enough to have her (and unlucky enough to lose her).
She is settled nicely in her crate at the moment. We are holding off on intros today as the entire house
seems to have been infected with hot weather crabbiness. Tomorrow will be soon enough for her to
meet the “flying boxerinis…and I don’t want to take any chance with her pulling her
stitches.
So far what we have seen of this girl is a very sweet personality. She appears to be housebroken and
crate trained. She does pretty good on the leash – is not a puller unless she sees something that
excites her sense of smell. She’s a dainty little thing, I’d say about 40 lbs tops, with a
beautifully shaped head, warm, friendly eys, a nice smile, and some beautiful white markings.
She’s been around both kids so far and seems to genuinely like children. We’ll do some more
temperament testing over time to find out what, if any her limits are, but my initial impression is that this
is a genuinely sweet girl who has a ton of love and affection to give a family. We’ll get a better
update in on her later this week. For now, here’s a picture. Even with the “satellite dish
on her head you can see what a little beauty she is!
