UPDATE 3/16/05 - Good news to report, Tanner has finally and completely settled in his forever home with his Mom
and her 14 year old son, Terry. Things were a bit hectic here for the past month with all the new people to meet and
new territory to check out. We got Tanner a brand new super plushy dog bed and the first night he was here my son
decided that it might be nice to sleep close to Tanner and make sure he was O.K.. I was a bit concerned myself how
he was going to do, so about 4:30am I got up to check on him. Low and behold poor Tanner was wide awake all
curled up on the hardwood floor NEXT TO my son who was now completely asleep and totally sprawled over his new
dog bed. I was greeted with the look of "I thought this place came with a bed". It was quite an amusing site. As the
days have gone on, every day has been a confirmation of what a VERY loving, obedient, playful, new member our
family has acquired. Words cannot adequately describe how good it feels to have a "canine kid" in the house again.
Tanner wants to get his two cents in:
"and i thought living with Jackie and Dan was heaven, they got the same great food here, my dog bed is oh sooooo
sweet, and i get more lovin' than i know what to do with. Oh by the way, my forever Mom has slightly changed my name
to O'Tanner Boy, she told me that a good Irish family even gives their dog a good Irish name (if it gets me all the
corned beef i can eat on Saint Patrick's Day then i'm good with it) i know i have big paws to fill...sometimes i hear my
Mom and Terry talk about Mac and Murphy and i know they lived a longgggg and great life with them and that's exactly
what i plan on doing. i miss playing with Peaches though, it's weird not having any other boxer buddies here but my
Mom says that she and Jackie are looking for a girlfriend for me ....HOT DIGGITY DOG !!!!!!!!
All my life I have been of the "old school" where if you wanted a dog you searched the local paper for a breeder who
had a litter of puppies for sale, checked out their kennel and dogs, then picked out that special canine bundle of love
with floppy ears and brought them home. In July of 1991 my son was born and 2 weeks later I went out and found
such a breeder and came home with not one, but 2 boxer puppies. It was my desire to give my son the same joy and
wonderful memories I had growing up with a boxer. Since then it has been quite the Norman Rockwell experience of
the boy and his dogs. They were the three Musketeers. They shared PB & J sandwiches, allowed him to grab a hold
of their back when he was learning to walk, they were there to be buried in piles of autumn leaves over and over again,
they chased after his snowballs as if they were balls and they were always available as pillows to snuggle up with
after every body was exhausted from the days adventure. In January 2005, at 13.5 years old, we had to put Mac to
sleep since a tumor in his spine relegated him unable to walk but he was 80lbs of lovin' boxer till the very end . About
a year later Murphy who was 14.5 years old, followed his brother over the bridge because he had inoperable tumors in
his bladder. Needless to say this past year has been heartbreak for me and a devastating experience for my son who
often referred to Mac and Murphy as his "dog brothers" .
While searching the net one day, I stumbled upon a listing for Second Chance Boxer Rescue and thought I had just
discovered gold. You would guess I must have been living my life under a rock because I had no idea that people
would band together and have the adoption of someone else's dog as their mission.
I was thrilled, excited and an absolute nervous wreck contemplating going through this process. After sharing the
discovery of the web site with my son, we felt like kids in a candy store with a $100. We had no idea that all these
boxer buddies were out there looking for homes so we set out on a mission to find two to share our home with. My
son was thinking this adoption thing was wayyyyy too cool but I was stricken with apprehension, nervousness, and
skepticism. Not in the breed, but in the process and of the unknown. Keeping in mind I was from the "old school"
method of getting a dog, we forged forward and filled out the adoption application. To my joy and complete
satisfaction, from the first phone call with Jeri, to the home visit with Shirley, I evolved from a cautious seeker to a
convinced adopter. All my questions, concerns and qualms were put to rest about this new way to get a dog. A special
accolade of thanks needs to be paid to Andrew and Michael who helped us with our journey to find the right dog. They
TRULY understood our need for the right chemistry of dog and family. We traveled to Jackie and Dan's home to meet
this dog that our only vision of him was his picture on the web site (Smiling, I had family in 3 different states cruising
SCRB web site helping us look for the right ONE, For my family, getting a dog is THAT big of a deal) After being
introduced to Tanner we all sat in the living room to get a feel for who and what he was about and Tanner gravitated
towards my son who had treats in his hand. He took the treats from Terry and then, with no reservation, crawled up
into his lap and tucked his head up under my sons chin. Terry was in awe of his immediate show of affection and
embraced him with his arms. The two of them sat there for a few minutes nuzzling each other when my son looked up
at me with this huge, glorious smile and whispered "Mom, HE IS THE ONE !!!!" It was a boy and his boxer match
made in heaven.
I know this is a lengthy epistle, but there is a valid reason for sharing all these events. Throughout my life I have
donated many hours for various volunteer organizations and all too often you get overwhelmed with frustration and
impatience that you can't get more done or you only ever get feedback when something doesn't go right. For all of you
that give your time to transport rescued dogs, all the phone calls made to interview new foster homes, new adopting
families, setting up BRADS, doing fund raisers, trips to shelters and every thing in between…a humble and heartfelt
thank you that because of the mission of SCRB and the dedication of it's volunteers , you have made this family very
happy and complete.
With much gratitude and deep appreciation,
2/11/06 - Tanner has been adopted and will be relocating his dog bed for the LAST time !!!!
1/9/06 Someone please adopt Tanner as he has taken it upon himself to start moving the dog beds around to where
he thinks they should be. Which means he is getting way to settled here. He likes to have his own bed in the kitchen
and we have one in there, but if it's taken, he gets busy and moves one from the living room. He does then lay down
on it so guess it is worth all the work that he does. Too funny. Tanner is now with all his foster brothers
and sisters and is doing a pretty good job. He loves our puppy Peaches but she makes every foster dog that comes
here be her best friend. She doesn't take no for an answer. He plays very nice with her and also the other female
resident but doesn't feel comfortable with the males. He can be with them and I am finding him more and more in
their company but he isn't totally comfortable for him especially around food. I think that Tanner would be happy just
being an only dog if he was made a big part of his family's life. He continues to love attention and will do anything that
you ask him to do. He is a very dedicated dog. He has met several people and does great as long as he is not in the
middle of the 5 resident boxers. Tanner is still crated during the work day which he doesn't mind at all. He sleeps in
our spare bedroom and is perfect in there. He loves to eat and we always put him in his room before getting the food
ready and he cries as though to say "don't forget me". He does like some toys and will play with Peaches with a toy
so he does like to have some fun. He loves to play with his foster dad who is always teasing him to get him to play.
You can turn him on to play with a snap of your fingers. He is a beautiful boy and will give back what he receives. He
can be a snuggle bug or ready for a romp to play. Please don't keep him waiting, he is excited to get to his new home
and family and settle in. Don't worry, he will show you where he wants his dog bed to be.
12/21/05 - It is time for a progress report on Tanner. Tanner is doing great at his foster home. He was neutered last
week and tested negative for heartworm. He was a very good boy at the vets and all of girls at the vet thought he
was a sweet dog. He was very cooperative. Tanner is just a sweetheart and we have fallen in love with him. He has
gained 5 pounds and now weighs 57 pounds. His coat has gotten nice and healthy from getting good food. He
looks great. Tanner loves attention and will sit for hours next to you and he is very happy when you pet him
sometimes demanding it by putting his head between your arm and body. He makes me laugh when he does that
because he is so insistant. Tanner is completely housebroken and has had no accidents in the house. He is crated
during the work day which he doesn't mind and then at night he sleeps in our spare bedroom on the bed which he
lays on a little blanket that I put there for him to keep him warm. He is taking treats very nicely now that he is getting
filled up. He was so hungry when he first came to us. He loves food so I think he is just enjoying the good life that he
has here. Tanner will become very attached and devoted to his new family and are hoping that he will get a forever
home soon befoe he gets anymore attached to us. Tanner is great at catching treats and usually does not miss when
you toss one at him. It makes me think that he had food thrown at him perhaps over a fence because he is good at it.
I heard from another
SCBR volunteer that Tanner was kept outside and used as a guard dog for a business. I am so glad that he has left
that life style behind him and that his boxer spirit is still there to show me that he loves people and life will only get
better for him as he is adopted. Tanner is still not with the other boxers here because he seems to get nervous with
all the confusion. I don't blame him as sometimes it is too much for me. (Only kidding) He isn't agressive to o
ther dogs just isn't sure of it. He was just neutered last week so we will give him some time to settle down. I think
Tanner would love to be an only dog because of his devotion to humans. Tanner has learned so much here and he
will continue to learn lots of things about everyday life in the house. He is just an amazing dog to me. He has come
along more quickly than I thought he would. He loves to play on the floor with his foster dad. He meets me at the gate
every night when I come home from work. Tanner would be a great addition to a family. I was hoping that he
would be 'home for the holidays' but we are preparing for him to have Christmas with us. Santa is bringing him some
good treats and a couple of toys that will perhaps spark him to play with them. I'm not sure he has had too much but I
think he will learn quickly. Don't delay in getting your applications in for this guy. He will be forever dedicated to you
and you will never be sorry for making this guys life complete.
12/06/05 - Let me tell you about our new foster named Tanner. Tanner has been here a few days now and has
settled in very nicely. He is a sweet boy and seems to be enjoying his stay so far. He is eating anything that we offer
him. He is very hungry and loves to eat. I always wonder how a dog that loves to eat as much as he does, look like he
does because he is so skinny. He is eating kibbled food mixed with a little warm water and finishes his bowl in
record time. He is crated during the day when we are at work and he does well in there. He loves his peanut butter
filled marrow bone and goes in his crate without a second thought. I just gave him a busy bone which is suppose to
keep them occupied for a while and he finished it in about 5 minutes. So much for keeping him busy. He was looking
for another one. He thought it was a great snack.
Tanner is dealing with all of his foster brothers and sisters through a gate. He has been a little possessive of his
food and water so he is not with everyone yet. We will just take it slow with him. I hope that he will begin to enjoy his
friends once we get his belly filled. We started him eating by giving him some boiled hamburg and rice which he
loved for his upset stomach. He has had alot of changes recently so we will give him time to settle down. He loves to
be in the kitchen with us and he is great. He plays a little bit and then lays down on a dog bed. He likes his foster dad
and has played a little bit with him. He knows sit and are working on him recognizing his new name. He loves to get
out in the fenced in backyard where he checks everything out. I think it feels pretty good to him to be safe, warm, good
food and great company. I hope that we will soon be able to get him with our dogs soon. We will keep working on it.
Tanner will be going to the vet later this week to get heartworm tested and have an exam before he is neutered. He
will be ready soon and he sure would like to be at h is forever home before Christmas. That is what he wants most of
a this year. Please help him get his wish. He has been a very good boy.
12/3/05 - Our newest guest at the Boxer'In on the Lake has arrived and we have named him Tanner. He is a stray
from a Shelter and would like to thank Jeri and her sister for the ride. Tanner is fawn colored with a black mask boxer
boy with cropped ears, docked tail and a little bit of white on his feet. He will need to be neutered and have a
heartworm test. He is very very thin and his skin just hangs on him so we will be working to get some weight on
him. We is drinking and we have started him on some boiled hamburg and rice that his foster dad had already for
him when we arrived home. He appears to be very happy so far and likes everyone he has met so far. Tanner has
only met his foster friends through a gate except for Snowie who he liked very well. We will update you soon on what
Tanner is all about.
