| 7/27/06 - To all my fellow foster parents: I promised to report on Rollo's vet appt. today. I wish it was going to be full of good news, but unfortunately-it's not. It appears that Rollo's loss of his back legs ( & bowels) was even much more severe than I had thought. Dr. Richie took Rollo's back foot and bent it under and poor Rollo stood on his foot like it was normal. He apparently had no feeling that his foot was not in it's normal position. The vet said that there was evidence of a 4-6" area of back to hips that was profoundly damaged, and would only get worse. His hacking cough, that had been listed as a residual of heartworm treatment, was (after receivng a dog biscuit) determined to be that he had problems with his Vegus (?) nerve as well, which is what closes the epiglottis to prevent food going into your windpipe. So because of Rollo's age and deteriorating health, a call to Julie from the vet, and a chat with me, it was decided that the best thing for Rollo was to be put to sleep. I stayed with him and loved him to the end, but I have to say it hit me harder than I thought it might after just having him for such a short time (6/25). It just proved to me how fast he became a part of my family. He was such a "velcro" dog and a bed hog as well. I miss him terribly already, but am pleased that he is happy & healthy of the other side of Rainbow Bridge. Give me a little time to get over this, and i'll be ready to take another. Loving him for such a short time, proved to me that I really am meant to do this, and since there are so many needing help, I want to be there for all the homeless boxers. Thanks for allowing me the honor of having Rollo in my home. He was a great dog!! Dale 6/25/06 - Rollo has arrived at his LAST foster home (at least I hope so!), and he is indeed a gentleman. He had a 3 hour ride to get here today. Robin very nicely brought him up from Kennnebunk - THANK YOU ROBIN & MIKE!! - where we met and Rollo had a pee break and a drink of water. We then loaded him into my friends Yukon w/air conditioning and headed to Bangor, where I left my vehicle this morning. He was VERY good on his ride in the back seat, and licked my hand a few times. Otherwise, he just laid down and enjoyed the air. We eventually just put the windows down in the front and lowered the back one a couple inches and he seemed to enjoy the ride and the breeze. Once we got to Bangor, I assisted him again into the Blazer and off to Hudson we came. My male 11 year old shih-tzu and 9 year old female chihuahua pom were anxiously (??!!??) awaiting and barking their heads off while I walked around the yard with Rollo and allowed him to mark his new territory. (Perhaps, they still remember their old buddy, Chelsea, who I lost to cancer at 6 !/2 in 1998.) Rollo has already attempted to mark his territory inside and a firm "no" stopped him midstream. Since then he has slept by my feet and followed me around and been just a dear. He especially likes to have his ears scratched. He is doing very well with the small dogs, although my cats have yet to meet him, but I'm sure we will all be one big happy family. I think my bed will get very crowded though, as all my "kids" sleep on the bed, so if Rollo wants to and can find room, I'm sure it won't be long before he joins us!! Thank you all so much for allowing me my FIRST, but definately not last, foster senior baby. 6/14/06 - Rollo has settled into the routine of the Riverview. Rollo loves his evening walk around the neighborhood, and he is such a gentleman--he doesn't pull on the leash at all. Todya we passed a bunch of houses with the windows open and their resident dogs barking at us furiously. Not a peep out of Rollo! He is quiet in our house, too. In many ways he would be the perfect dog for an apartment or a condo. He is quiet, not too big, stays alone all day (mostly sleeping) and loves his evening walk when the weather is nice. Of course, I think that the Seniors are the best! (I adopted my Rocky when he was six, and I was blessed with seven years of his companionship.) Rollo likes to lay at my feet while I read or watch TV, and sleeps on the dog bed next to mine (or in my bed if I let him). Rollo finally met my cat. He is definitely OK with cats! He wagged his nub at her and she rubbed up against him, and then they chased each other through the hallway. Rollo just seems to want to be everybody's friend. 5/27/06 - The riverview has to post a No Vacancy sign. It is summer in Maine! Mr. Rollo has arrived. The female at his other foster home took a sudden intense dislike to him and it was no longer a safe home. And this sweet old man deserves a safe place to hang out. Hopefully he will find that here. He took a short walk through the neighborhood on leash (And was wonderfully well-mannered.) Then he discovered both of the doggie-doors. One to the front pen, and then the other to the big backyard down a long light of steps. They didn't faze him in the least and he checked out his new digs. As it is my bedtime, he is now in the big crate for the night. So far Beau and Lilo have wagged nubs at him through the kitchen baby gates, but we will not push the introductions. Plenty of time for those! 5/11/06 - More good news from the vet. Rollo had his heartworm test today and it was negative! 2/27/06 - Sir Rollo has recently finished his heartworm treatment. Because of his age they took the slow approach. This old guy is such a soldier - never even a wimper. Although there were times when he walked around in a daze. My biggest concern is that the cough was not going away, but over the weekend there was a big improvement. Right now we are working on cleaning up his ears which are full of guck. We have discovered that Rollo is hard of hearing, perhaps even completely deaf. He is a dear old man. He kind of totters around and sometimes needs to be helped down the stairs. He is also loosing his fur collar; we have lots of inch long hairs flying about. He also rarely barks. In fact, the only time he has barked has been at the cat. Since they have come to better terms, we have not heard his hoarse bark at all. 12/3/05 - Unfortunately Rollo has heartworm, so at this time he is on medical hold. 11/23/05 - Greetings from the LLotta Bean House! It has been a while since we have had a guest, but when we heard that this gentle soul needed a home we thought we could offer him accomodations. Rollo was a stray and was in a shelter. An urgent plea was posted because the shelter was closing for renovations and there was no where for the old guy to go. So SCBR stepped in to help him out. The shelter figured Sir Rollo was about eleven years old and the Vet agrees and suggests he may even be older - pretty impressive for a boxer. He is 100 percent boxer but appears to have spent more time outside than in - He comes with his own fur collar. In fact he is the furriest boxer I have ever seen! When Rollo arrived he was really exhausted. He slept for hours at a time, and his eyes were a bit droopy. He has had a hacking cough and a gimpy hind leg. As tired as he was he paced when he was awake. Now after a couple of days, Rollo is a showing more spirit. He does not like to be segregated and has been trying to get over the baby gate - kind of hard to do with a gimpy leg. So, we have started introductions with the permanent residents. Introductions with our female boxer were very successful as we anticipated. We have been most concerned about our male boxer. He can be - to say the least - a bit fiesty. This is the first male guest we have had, and we are making introductions slowly. The good news is that our first attempt went very well. So we are hopeful. He has had one bad encounter though. We were so concerned about our dogs, we kind of forgot about our other resident - Samuria Sam (the cat). Sam kind of took exception to the fact a strange dog was walking by. We call him Samuria Sam - use your imagination. Rollo had his Vet visit today. The hacking cough was a concern, but the Vet says it is only a bit of a cold. His gimpy leg is just that, it's gimpy. No torn ACL or hip problem, just a sore knee. Even his extra fur is due partially to his age. Also, Sir Rollo was the perfect gentlman during his vet visit. So far he thinks the food here at the Llotta Bean House in pretty tasty, he has a great appatite. He is also finding that there are some really good soft dog beds and blankets to lie on. Life is good. |
