12/3/06 - We just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of you for your wonderful thoughts and prayers. I
am sorry that I have not been sooner to write. It has been a sad time for us.

This weekend was a little tough as we had to tell my step-kids about Roger. They all took it very hard and it
was like reliving the nightmare all over again.

When we sent Roger to the Bridge, I asked that he be cremated and his ashes be returned to us so that we
can bury his ashes when all the kids are here and they can give him their goodbyes. I have kept his collar and
tags and will bury them with him. Would you guys like the SCBR tag back? I wasn’t sure. We will be making
a headstone for him with all the nicknames the kids gave him. (Ro Ro was a fave) that way the kids have a
place to mourn him as will we. We could not bear to bring up his bowls until yesterday.

In the end, he was suffering and he is now in a much better place. Those of us left behind are the ones left sad
as he is frolicking at the Bridge waiting for us to be reunited.

In the short time that we had him, we do take comfort in the fact that we adored him. He was loved and spoiled
rotten. In the end I held his paws, kissed him and told him we loved him until he breathed his last breath. I was
there and he knew that he was loved. We did not give up on him. We wanted desperately to stop his pain. He
deteriorated so quick, which made it all the more difficult for us but for his sake, I am grateful that he did not
suffer too long, although my guess is that he just did not want to complain. The size of the tumor leads us to
believe it was brewing for a long time. Before he passed his eyes were so sad, and he limped with no wag left
in his beautiful “nub but when he went to the Bridge, he looked peaceful and I will carry that memory
with me always, even though it makes me sad.

Thank you SCBR for the chance to have loved such a wonderful gentle giant, even if for a too short of a time.

11/27/06 -
I am so sorry to have to write this email. It is with great sadness that I tell you that Roger has gone to the
Bridge. I am sorry that I have not been able to update since the last week but we have been on a roller coaster of a
ride.

Last week when the vet could not find anything wrong, they preformed a tick panel and found that he tested positive
for Lyme Disease. They sent him some antibiotics and told me to call on Monday to see how he was doing. He
had one good day, the day that I updated everyone and then as Thanksgiving came he went down hill again. So
back to the vet I went on Friday. This time he was not eating and was not improving as the vet said he would once
on meds. The vet suggested I take him to get an abdominal ultrasound as he had a fever and they could not
explain it. I refused to bring him home (because they had him on fluids and at home he was refusing to eat)
because I knew that at least at the vet he was getting nourishment. I hated not having him home but he was
loosing so much weight so fast, I got scared. The soonest they could get him in for the ultrasound was tonight at
6pm. The vet called me this morning to tell me that his fever broke and that he was eating some. We were elated.
However, when I went to pick him up, he had been off of fluids for a couple of hours and the fever was back. He
also was unable to walk without a limp.

I took him to the ultrasound appointment with a sinking feeling in my stomach. The vet, Dr. Girard, took the
ultrasound and I could tell by her face that she did not have good news for me.

Roger had a massive tumor in his abdomen. She explained to me that it was easier to tell me where it wasn’t
attached to than where it was. It had wrapped itself around his intestine and was pressing against his spleen. It
was also “leakingâ€ into his body cavity and was “infectedâ€.  She described all the symptoms that he
had been exhibiting this past two weeks. I was heart sick. She said that she would give him a 30% chance of
surviving an exploratory surgery and that she would caution that even if she could remove the tumor, she would
have to take out part if not most of his intestine.

I could not have my loyal old guy suffer, so we let him go to the Bridge. We are all inconsolable. There are no more
words.

UPDATE 9/16/06 -  Well, just a quick update on our beautiful new gentleman.
I know that it has only been three days but I just wanted to update everyone on Roger's first few days here as he
get settled.
He is truly one of the best dogs my husband and I have ever known. The first night he was a little sad and
confused so I slept on couch near him so that he wouldn't feel alone. We have a 2.5 year old terrier mix named
Gidget and I had originally seperated them that night but at three in the morning when she heard Roger howling
she started as well, so I gave up and let them be together while I slept over them in the couch. Roger seemed very
comforted with her presense and she was happy to be in her usual place.
The next day I worked form home and gave him lots of attention and hugs and he obliged by kissing me and
following me around the house. I ended the day with a nice long bath (in which he was a perfect gentleman)and he
slept that night like a champ on his new soft bed and next to his new sister! Can that boy snore!!!
The last couple of days have been so sweet. My husband and I both played hookey on Friday (day two of skipping
out on work for me but I could not bring to leave my new boy home alone!) and spent the day getting to know this
wonderful boy and we have to say we get such a kick out of him. Jon and Roger are starting to really bond by
"singing together." It is hysterical! Jon howls at Roger and he "sings" back. My 6 year old Jay is always laying next
to him letting Roger kiss kiss kiss him! He LOVES children. This is truly love at first sight for us.
In conclusion, I have to say that I could cry at the thought that we had even the slightest reservation about adopting
a senior dog. It was my husband who had a friend who said to us that wonderful dogs, regardless of age, are still
wonderful dogs and deserved to be treasured. They are easy, gentle, kind and loving. With all the "kinks" worked
out of them. All the things that our Roger Doger is. However long God grants us with Roger is time that would have
been that much sadder without him. Thank you SCBR and especially Danielle who took such good care of Roger,
for rescueing this wonderful guy!
Adopt a Senior - it will change your life!

9/13/06 - Roger has been adopted!

8/17/06 - You can see by Roger's new pictures that he is a much trimmer & healthier boy now!   He has lost 14 lbs
since he came into rescue & is much more toned up.  He is still a big, handsome boy with a heart of gold though!

Roger spent the day at Petfest (www.petfestnewengland.com) last Saturday with his foster family who helped all
day at the event.  Roger seemed to enjoy all of the attention he was getting & loved everybody who came to see
him.  He made sure no one forgot him though when it was lunch time & the burgers & hot dogs were cooking!  He
was definitely off his diet for the day & was happy to clean up any leftovers!

Roger is a very sweet & happy boy that is still looking for his home.  He has been waiting WAY too long, especially
when he is great with kids of all ages, all people & dogs, housetrained & does not need to be crated, what more
could you ask for?!

6/23/06 - Roger is such a sweet, sweet old man. He does not like it when my husband and son wrestle he starts
pacing and barking until they stop he has really become attached to my son..He still thinks he is a lap dog even at
his size but he is such a sweet dog. I can't even imagine how someone gave him up. We have never had to crate
him and he has never peed pooped or chewed anything..He is way to dignified to be going to the bathroom in the
house!!! If we had the room he would have been adopted by us already, it will be a sad day for our family the day
his forever family takes him to his forever home..Although it will be great for "Jolly Roger" as we now call him!! If you
are looking for a sweet gentle dog he is the dog for you!!!

5/5/06 - Roger moved to Maine to his new foster home a few weeks ago.  He had 2 tumors removed one from his
hind leg and one from his ear both came back as noncancerous!!! He is really a sweet old man.Walks very well on
a leash except when he spots a cat!!! He does great with my kids 3 and 5, great with my dogs, however really
wants to use the cat as a chew toy!!!Roger is great his new family will be truly lucky to have such a well behaved
gentlemen!!!

4/2/06 - We picked Roger up this morning and we don't believe we personally have ever seen a Boxer at 96.6
pounds!  This boy needs to lose weight. :)

We introduced he and Abby at the house and it was difficult for a few minutes.  Now they seem to be settling down.
Roger came with excellent records, and I found out he was with the parents of the girl who originally adopted him.
Roger needs to be with a family who has a large yard.  They told me he was good with children.

Following is the note that was sent with Roger:

"Everything I want to say about our Roger is wondeful.  He has been a very loving pet in our home.  When we
adopted him our thoughts were to keep him until he left us under natural causes.  I am so sorry that we must
surrender him back to the rescue.  As I am sure you know, family situations change and sometimes we must go
back on our words.  Being with us right now, I feel we are not doing right by him.  He needs more exercise than
what we can give him and to shed some pounds.  It has been a very long and cold winter for Roger.  Now that
spring is here he needs more than what we can give him.

Roger is well behaved and completed a Positive Training course with flying colors.  We were very proud of him.
Roger happens also to be a very smart dog.  He was able to train us well!  Some of the things he likes to be first
on line for anything.  He will sit very patiently waiting for his share.  (Especially if he hears the electric mixer making
cake batter, I always let him lick the spoon).  He gets along with other dogs, but his dream is to be able to catch the
cat on the other side of the fence.  He doesn't like the cold rain or snow as I am sure any boxer Mom knows.  He
will hold his business as long as he cannot get wet.  Roger retires fairly early at night -- about 8:30 or 9.  He will
sleep most mornings if no one stirs too early.  Otherwise he is up by 5.  I have sent his pillow and blanket which
goes on top of the pillow for softness.  He loves anything soft and fluffy to cuddle in.  He has at times twirled
himself into the poodle's very small basket.  He seems to prefer having his bed up against a wall or in a basket.
We will miss him very, very much.  I hope he doesn't stress too much for you."

Oh, yes, Roger will be going for an oatmeal bath tomorrow compliments of his foster parents. More updates soon
on this gentle giant!
