UPDATE 11/20/11 - It's with GREAT sorrow to report that Rufus/aka originally as Pena died/passed/surcomed to
his Dilated Cardiomyopathy today. As we can best figure, he was only 7 yrs old by the recent exposure of "gray" on
his muzzel. We had had out 1st exposure to this condition 2 yrs prior with our local Vet sending us immediatly to
Tuft's University for treatment. I must say that this place is FANTASTIC! Human hospitals could only wish that I
could arrive ( & other unannounced patiencet's) and be greeted with a person to accept our pet and qualify his
needs and get him into the proper treatment within 1-2 minutes of our arrival. We were aware of this condition and
limited his activities acoordingly.
We're trying not to beat our selves up over the "what-if's we dids" as his heart just went quickly and he didn't suffer.
He was our Best pet by far and hold no harm to this resue as it's a trait in this breed. - And yes we'll adopt another
when time allows us to heal.
Pease, Love and Boxer Farts!
UPDATE 6/06 - He is now at a perfect 62 Ibs for his size and LOVES his tennis ball(s) He will amuse himself all
day batting it around and chasing it. We are bringing him to the vet to have a"growth" removed from his paw, we
had brought him in before and the Vet and he thought it may be a cyst but it hasn't gone away- it doesn't seem to
bother Rufus the least, We are also having his heart checked prior to putting him under as his heart rate was rapid
at his initial meeting with the Vet (this could had been just his nerves we have concluded) but just to be safe.
We took him to a state Forest that has a small shallow river to see how he reacted to water. Rufus went with his
"Cousins" Zack and Zoe (2 Bernese Mountain dogs) that go playing there often With minimal coaching on Glenn's
part he went right in and throw in a stick and he did the doggie paddle In a deep small pool like an expert!
He has been taken to his home here like he always has been here.. I hustled to install an invisible fence when we
got him home and he won't leave our sight. If he hears a Chipmunk or hears a Catbird in the woods surrounding
our yard (We have over 5 acres in the woods with state and private property surrounding on all sides) he will go to
the grasses edge but that's it! (the electric fence is 20-200 feet in the woods- 1500 feet of total wire installed!) Now
we leave it unplugged and the collar inside.
We love our new-found “Boxer-Boy and loves his new people in his forever-home as you-all greatly refer.
3/25/06 - Pena has been adopted!
2/19/06 - Unfortuately Pena has to be returned to rescue. He was a perfect guest for his new family but he would
not leave the kitten alone. They tried everythnig and really feel it is in Pena's best interest to live in a cat free home.
They said Pena was a perfect guest, was so good for his bath. They really feel he will make some family very lucky.
2/17/06 - Pena was adopted!
1/14/06 - Pena is a great little guy. He is doing really well here. We put off his neuter until next week as he really
needs to gain a few pounds. Pena is eating like a champ. He gets along great with all the other dogs here and
loves everyone he meets. Pena is completely cratetrained and seems to be housebroken. He is a sweet guy with
good manners that deserves a family of his own.
1/8/06 - Pena arrived in rescue last night from one of our favorite NJ Shelters. He is a stray to the shelter. He was
in a transport with a bunch of other dogs up to Maine and did very well. He is super thin. He ate a great dinner,
walked right into his crate and didn't make a peep until morning. Today he has been a perfect guest so far. We will
update you as we get to know him.
