UPDATE 12/25/09 - We removed a tumor from Nevada hip this fall, no one thought it was anything. The biopsy
came back a stage 2 mast cell tumor. It was not long before more lumps were discovered and on December 23
after a particularly bad night we said our goodbyes. She wasn’t here long enough, but touch every heart she came
into contact with. She will be missed.
UPDATE 7/11/07 - Well we are coming upon our first year together. It is hard to believe it has been only a year
(seems like she has been here forever). Nevada has made great strides in her socializing issues, however she
still tries to make the first strike when she meets a new dog. Our next door neighbors just got a new puppy, her
first reaction was to attach, however after a couple days of correcting the behavior (correcting her with a verbal no)
she has gotten so she watches but doesn’t react to him when they are both out. So I know there is hope for her.
We are going on vacation Friday, to a house on a lake, it has been fun to watch her playing in the lake. Each time
we go she gets a little more comfortable playing in the water.
Nevada has had 2 health issues, twice she has had an allergic reactions, nothing in common either time.
Antihistamines resolved the swelling and itchy face both times. The other was for lack of a better description a
fainting spell. She got up in the middle of the night and collapsed, she came to quickly but was disoriented for
awhile. The next day was the second allergy attach. Not sure if the 2 things had anything to do with each other so
I took her to the vet. They took lots of blood and ran several test and had no explanation for either episodes.
Thank you all
UPDATE 12/12/06 - We finished an obedience class. We had originally signed up for a group class, Nevada spent
most of the first class starring down the rest of the class. In the nicest possible way we were asked not to return.
actually what she suggested was a one on one class. The teacher was great and as the class progressed she
introduced other dogs. Nevada did well, not great but definitely progress. We were given home work and
suggested we try a class again in 6-8 months. I see progress in every walk, however I don't think she will ever be
a social butterfly. She gets along great with aspen my brothers Lab, and when they are separated she is
genuinely glad to see her again. the cat has return from the basement and although I don't think I would leave
them in a room together alone they have definitely decided they both are staying. Long story short the trainer thinks
as well as I that each day her "defenses" are coming down. She is a precious soul and I continue correcting
people when they say how lucky she is. it is I that am lucky - she is a great girl.
7/13/07 - Nevada has been adopted!
7/4/06 - Nevada went to a dog park for the fist time and she did exceptional good for her first time. She had a few
scruffles with a couple of dogs but listened when I said no firmly and then ran for a while. We only stayed for about
twenty minutes as I did not want to over do it our first time out and she was getting excited. We walked out of the
park to the car off leash so she listened extremely well leaving all the dogs. I was very pleased with her. Then she
did have a dinner date the following day and she again was very good letting another dog in her house. She did
want to let him know that this was her house but she settled down and we all had a nice evening. This girl will fit
into your household. Please consider this baby.
6/26/06 - My two grand newphews were over the other day. One is three and one 6 and Nevada was great with
both boys! In fact they both walked her on leash when we went for a walk down to the pool.
6/20/06- I decided to bring Nevada to a dog trainer to help me with socializing Nevada with other dogs since I have
a one dog policy where I live. I wanted to see her reaction because when we walk and see other dogs she seems
to go after them. Well, it turns out that she might just want to play with them. When the trainer took her in the back
with the other dogs she was fine. In fact at first she wanted just to be with us and had no interest in the dogs but
after a few minutes she was sniffing the cages and her tail was wagging and wanted to play. He felt that she could
fit into a house with other dogs. He also was very impressed with her manners. I also swear she knows exactly
what I am saying to her. A couple of examples: Sunday she came into the room to try and get me up to feed her
and all I said was I need a few more minutes of shut eye and low and behold this sweet girl turned around and
when back to her bed. Then again today she wanted to go for a walk and I needed a few more minutes to finish up
my work. So I said "Nevada I need five minutes okay?" She just looked at me turn around and went to the door and
laid down. Her expression was Okay I can wait five minutes. She is priceless.. Please consider this girl because I
am getting very attached..Not good for a foster mom.....
6/2/06 - Nevada continues to be a perfect girl. In fact my neighbors are amazed how I can have her off leash and
playing with her in the front yard. They love watching her run circles around me and jump in the air for her ball and
then when I say home she runs into the house. She is so much fun. She loves to eat and puts her whole face into
the bowl. So now she knows to come to me afterwards to get her face washed. Otherwise I have food all over
me. Last Sunday she had a meet and greet with a friends Golden Retrever who is very mellow. After awhile she
was calm enough to lay down next to the dog while we humans talked. That was a very big improvement for her.
Her bags can be packed in a moments notice.
5/20/06 I had a tag sale today and just wanted to let you know how good Nevada was. She was tied outside with
me but just out of reach of people. She greeted everyone that came up to her with a little kiss and was perfect with
the kids. I thought that maybe she would be a little protective of the house but it was like she knew all these
people were okay and not a peep out of her. She was very gentle when a two year old came up to pat her. I was
so proud of her. Hope you are considering this girl.
5/16/06 - I have realized that Nevada now knows her name so I have been trying to work on her coming when she
is called. She does this in the house so we started working on it outside. I first would let the leash out all the way
and then call her. She was doing good with this. Then the rain came and she wanted to get home so I let her off
the leash and she ran home and into the garage. She had so much fun running that I continued to let her off leash
when I knew it was safe and no one else was around and we were near the house. She would run like the wind
that I thought at one point she is not going to stop in time and run right into my car. Well now I call her once she is
off leash and running and she comes back to me. I was so proud of her. Now to be honest..not sure if she would
come if another dog or person came by....But as I said this girl is very trainable and just wants a home. Believe me
this girl will make you very happy!
5/5/06 - Hi all Nevada here. My Foster Mom("FM") wanted me to write about myself so you will get to know me
better. Well, I hope you are enjoying my new updated pictures! I look so much better then when I came out of the
shelter. A big Thank you to my FM's friend Lynn. You will love my personality, I am a very low key kind of girl. Just
feed me, love me, exercise me and I will be so loyal. You will just want to KISS ME... Today I was left home for the
first time when a cleaning lady came over. We had a good time. I followed her around the whole time. She left a
note saying I was such a good girl. I received an extra treat at dinner tonight. I hope she comes back again. She
even took me for a walk just before she left. How fun an extra walk and extra treat at dinner. Who could ask for
more!? I was in doggie heaven.
I wish I could tell you what happened to me during my time on the run and why I was let loose but I am not even
sure myself, so no reason to fret about what you can not change. I think I was mistreated by a male because it
takes me more time to warm up to them, the girls I love right away. I have tried really hard to overcome some of
my fears and my FM says I am doing great. I no longer need to worry about people on our walks when my FM tells
me it is okay. I still do not like people walking up behind me and surprising me but we are even working on that.
My FM keeps a good look out for me and I will keep an eye out for her in case there is someone we do not want to
approach us. I will keep her safe. I like that arrangement, don't you? Don't you want to feel safe when we are
walking?
As for the dogs, well, that is another story. I still seem to want to bark and run with them, but stop when my FM tells
me to. If only I was not on the leash I think I would be better, but I can not convince my FM of that. She is adament
that I stay on the leash and says my new forever home can work on that. I did get out without anyone knowing
because the kitchen door came open with the wind. I was out playing by myself and a neighbor with his toy poodle
came over to tell on me. I did nothing wrong. No growling no biting, just some sniffing and a little pawing-you
know how us boxers are! Once I saw them coming to the front door I ran inside through the kitchen door to make
sure my FM was okay. I think I made the right choice. My FM was at first was mad, but then said I was a good girl
for not running away and not hurting that little poodle. Hey, I know this is getting long, so for now I will say goodbye
but you can call me if you have any questions for me. I will be waiting for your call. Now go back and look at my
cute picture...Are you in love yet?!
4/18/06 - Nevada loves to snuggle with you. She has mastered getting up on my Lazy boy with me and stretching
out. She was not feeling well this weekend. She had a upset stomach or what we refer to as Boxer belly. She
just wanted to be by your side and cuddle. While snuggling I was working on my laptop and we started looking at
the available dogs and she saw how many fosters have been adopted and got very sad. She is wondering why not
her. I reassured her that someone is out there looking for her and she will meet them soon. Please don't let me
be a liar.... She will make you very happy.
4/15/06 - Having Nevada here for three weeks now has been a lot of fun! She has my schedule down pat. I swear
she knew it was Friday last night and the weekend was beginning. We were all set to go to bed and she started to
play with me. I swear she was just so glad Saturday was coming and we would be spending the day together. I
was talking to her and asking her why the burst of energy and she just look at me as if to say I am so happy! She
then jumped on my bed and proceeded to say I think I will sleep with you tonight okay? That mushy face did me
right in and I let her sleep with me. So today we will do chores and errands and she will come with me. She
makes the best friend and partner. She is great pal to have along when it works for you, but if not she will just wait
for you to come home and be happy to see you. She will fit into your life just as fast.. I am certain of that.. Think
about this girl please. She needs to settle down with a forever home and family.
4/8/06 - This week we made some wonderful improvements with Nevada's social skills. I had a very busy work
week and was away for 12 hours straight for three days so Nevada had some dog sitters come into the house and
take her for a walk and then back to feed her and another walk. No one had a problem at all and each day it was a
different person. We now walk and people do not faze her at all. She is still having problems with dogs so today
we spent an hour with a dog trainer. He had his trained police dog to help. He helped me with walking Nevada
and although they did not get togther he was able to teach Nevada to walk right passed his dog and not growl or
pull on the leash. He felt that with some more training Nevada could be social to other dogs, but for now I think
she should be the only dog. I would not take Nevada to a dog park and you will have to keep her on leash when
she is out with you. I want to stress to you all that this girl will listen to you when you say no and keep walking.
Once she has lost eye contact with the other dog, Nevada is on to sniffing the grass and will continue walking with
you. This girl so just wants to love you. She learns very easily and knows her schedule so she will tell you when
she is hungry. She started to play a little with a toy. She is a happy girl with really no bad habits. I figure they
would show themselves by now. She does not beg, she will sleep through the night, and will fit into your
schedule. She gives the softest kisses and I will warn you once she gives you a kiss you will fall madly in love with
her!
4/2/06 - I am sorry I have not written lately, but I really have been enjoying this girl so much. She has such a great
personality. She knows how to look at you with her sad eyes and just gets you to do anything she wants, i.e. take
her out, feed her, give her some loving and of course the treats.. How she loves a treat. Nevada had a very good
week as far as socializing. We walk now and greet people without the fur up her back and have gotten the tail
wagging a little. The kids in the complex have been out playing this week and today she walked right by them
without a word or a correction out of me. My gut feeling is that she would also fit in a home that has other dogs, but
since I was unable to test this I can not say for sure. I will try and work on that this week. I had some friends come
into the house and she was all wiggles and kisses no warm up time needed at all. Then I had a UPS guy come to
the door and she was more on guard put still friendly. So that was a really impovement and more to her
personality. She also shows no sign of running. I leave the door open and walk into my garage and she just sits
at the door waiting for me. If I take to long out in the garage she will eventually wander out to look for me but not to
run. Nevada had a bath and is all cleaned up and so soft and white now. What a big difference. You will not be
making the wrong decision if you pick her. She will give you so much love and happiness. Nevada wants you to
know that she will your best friend. Thank you for considering this sweet girl!
3/25/06 - Nevada has been here for about a week now and I have so much to write about this girl. First, I was told
that she was on her own and running the streets of CT for about a year. This explained some of her behavior. Her
social skills were not the best. She has a hard time greeting people and animals right away. This action was a
little puzzling because she has been so sweet with me. I know this girl is very smart so I wanted to start
socializing her. I began introdcing her to people slowly and what a difference. What I did was have people come
over and we would just ignore her and once she felt safe she wanted to join in so she could be petted and to give
kisses. I am not sure how long or if ever she will get over being a little cautious of people, but just in one week the
time frame has dropped considerable. Nevada needs someone that will be patient and not rush her. This girl fit
right into my schedule so fast she can be crated or left out. She just goes to sleep and waits for you to return. She
has never taken anything off the counters. She will sleep through the night either on her bed or with you. I am
positive this girl has had some obedience training because she listens extremely well Today we were walking
and she started to go after a squirrel and I thought here goes my arm, but once I said NO and to come she
stopped running and turned around and came back. She will make a wonderful addition to your family. She is
beginning now to tell me when she has to go out and when it is time to feed her. She is so darn cute.... She was at
the vets and is all updated on all her shots. Nevada is really a nice size girl. She is not a muscular boxer, but not
petit either. I think the perfect size for either a home, apt. or condo. Right now she is sleeping on her back with all
her legs up in the air. She likes this position. If you are looking for a companion that will fit right into your home
without a lot of fuss this is the girl for you! Please consider giving this girl a forever home. She so deserves one.
3/18/06 - I want to introduce you to a sweet girl whom I have named Nevada. Being that she is white, Nevada
means snowfall in spanish. She was found running loose in CT. She has just arrived so there is not much to
report yet except she was taught some manners. All I know now is that she does sit on command. She loves
riding in the car and if you leave her there she just settles down and sleeps while she waits for you. Will write
once I get to know this baby better, but my first instinct-She is a keeper...
