UPDATE 6/3/07 - Today is our one-year anniversary of adopting Marty.
We were discussing him today and we really feel that he is the IDEAL family dog.  He's unbelievably loving and
sweet.  He loves to roll over and get tummy rubs from us and gives the best wet doggy kisses.  He gets along well
with our other dogs & is great with strange dogs as well.  He couldn't be any more gentle and loving with my
children than he is.  We all adore him!
He has been very healthy.  We've had an ongoing problem with infection in his prepuce (or as our vet says "the
penis garage") but we've learned how to treat that by flushing with Novalsan solution and it helps immensely.
Marty's pretty obedient...he sometimes has selective hearing, but he does sit, down, sometimes stay.  He clearly
wants to do what makes us happy and he seems to "tune in" to our moods and anticipates what we want most of
the time. He rarely ever jumps up on someone and if he does he obeys when I tell him "off."
Marty is especially enamored of my husband who travels quite a bit.  When my husband comes home from a trip,
Marty is ALL OVER him, giving him kisses and loving on him.  My husband LOVES this!
Marty loves to go on car rides!  His favorite spot to ride is in the passenger seat.  He also likes the rear van seat
where he can rest his head on the back of the seat and look out the back window.  Our daily trips to pick-up my son
from kindergarten are over now, and I think he'll miss it, so we'll have to find other short trips he can go on.
Since we've gotten Bella, we've seen just how submissive Marty is.  He was dominant to our 10 yr old pug, who
doesn't have the desire to be dominant, but Bella, even 20 lbs. lighter than Marty, is the boss of all the other dogs,
mainly because she barks the loudest.  LOL!  Marty defers to her, letting her eat first.  He plays lots of games with
her, like keep away with a stuffed toy.  They play hard and it's adorable when he rolls over and plays with her while
laying on his back.  Right now they are tugging on an old stuffed toy that has seen better days and probably won't
survive this current tugging session.  It's so great to see them playing TOGETHER and I think the addition of
another boxer has made Marty a much happier dog.  He's tired and happy after playing with Bella and he's a
wonderful snuggler with his human companions, young and old.  As I said before, we really feel he is an IDEAL
dog!!!

UPDATE 10/25/06 -  We're not due for a regular update but I just wanted to post some Marty brags.  There has just
never been a better dog.  He is so loving and so wonderful.  His temperament is absolutely perfect.  I take him in
the car to drop-off and pick-up my son every day.  If it's a really nice day, I might even walk him up to the school door
to wait for Lucas to come outside.  He sits so nicely, sometimes he even lays down to wait.  He lets all the toddlers
that are there with their moms pet him and love on him and he's mellow as can be.  I had a pumpkin painting party
with lots of small children at my house today and none was afraid of dogs, so after the paint was cleaned up I let
Marty out to interact and he was so sweet and loving to adults and kids alike.  Everyone exclaimed how wonderful
he is and I was sure to put in my plug for boxers as a breed and especially for SCBR.  I am always amazed at what
a fantastic, obedient (for the most part), sweet tempered dog Marty is.  I can't think of anything I would change
about him. Thanks again, SCBR, for uniting us with this wonderful friend and family member!!!

UPDATE 9/6/06 - Hi everyone!!
Marty has now completed his obedience classes and he was quite the comedian at class.  The instructors and the
other students loved that he would just lay on the ground when I wasn't working with him.  He always had to relax
between tasks because classes were in the evening and that was past his "active" time of day.  While the other
dogs were up and raring to go, Marty would lay on the floor with his head on my foot and sigh as if to say that this
was all way too much work for him.  Despite that, he learned his commands, and as long as he's not feeling
ornery, he's pretty obedient for all the basic commands.  He'll even sit for my children.  He takes treats as gentle as
can be and seems to love his crate.
He's also a big fan of playing outside, taking car rides and  playing with two dogs that belong to a friend of mine.
He could play with them until he completely tuckers out.  He's really an ideal family member and we enjoy him so
much.  He can get needy and jealous at times (not aggressive, though).  He likes to get between me and my
daughter if I'm down on the floor playing with her.  He'll push his nose in between us to get in on the action.  My
kids both love him very much and he's gentle with them, or as gentle as a 70 pound big baby can be.  LOL!

UPDATE 8/4/06 - Hello, everyone!  I'm just updating on how Marty is doing.  He's fantastic.  He's definitely the
"dominant" dog, having let our pug know who is boss.  Emma, for her part, accepted Marty as the main man, so no
problem there.  He continues to be great with the kids and with us.
We took a vacation to Las Vegas last week, but the kids and grandma stayed home and Marty did fine in my and
my husband's absence.
We've taken Marty to the dog park, but there is one dog there he doesn't get along with--or rather the dog doesn't
get along with him and is constantly trying to establish dominance over Marty.  The dog's owner is pretty good
about intervening but we're not comfortable taking Marty into the park if that dog is there anymore.  Our trainer
advised against it, so we haven't be taking him as often.
Obedience training is going well.  We have 4 more lessons and I see lots of progress made.  Marty's still obstinate
at times and does what he wants sometimes, but he clearly wants to please us and he knows sit and down really
well.  Stay is not quite as 100% effective.  We've begun moving commands and that is going well.  We just need to
continue to practice, practice, practice.
The biggest problem we have with Marty is that he chews on EVERYTHING he can find on the floor--with two young
kids, that's lots of stuff.  He'll drop whatever it is if I tell him to, but he has trouble stopping himself from chewing on
things he finds.  He's destroyed a few shoes.  Any suggestions for training him NOT to do this are welcome.  As
hard as we try, it's very hard to keep EVERYTHING off the floor all the time.  We do provide toys for the purpose of
chewing--both soft and hard toys.
Marty continues to be a sweet, silly guy and we have lots of fun with him.  Oh, an aside...my friend who is a vet tech,
came over to cut Marty's nails.  We didn't know how he would do but he just laid there and let us do it.  I didn't even
have to help.  (When we cut my pug's nails, we have to sedate her and it's still a fight requiring me to hold while my
friend trims the nails!) What a great dog he is!!

UPDATE 7/4/06 - Marty has now been with us for a month!!  It's hard to believe--the time has gone by so quickly but
it also feels like he's been with us forever.
Once we got past the first three days, when Marty was stressed from the change to our home, things have been
terrific.  He's a sweet and funny man!!  Our children, 6 and 3 years old, just adore him and he is gentle with them.
Initially Marty wouldn't eat and he followed me EVERYWHERE just like my shadow.  He has gotten more secure
now and he will still follow me about 60% of the time but sometimes he's content to just lay on his dog bed with
his head hanging over the side.
Our pug dog, Emma, is an old girl (9 years) and she's not Marty's biggest fan but she tolerates him unless he tries
to play with her.  Then she goes somewhere to hide.
Marty's health has great.  He did have a bladder infection but that has cleared up and his indoor accidents have
been very minimal ever since. Other than that he's in fantastic health.
When we first got Marty he pulled on the leash when we would walk him in the neighborhood.  We use a gentle
leader now and he walks like a DREAM.  He's afraid of cars but with the gentle leader he now walks calmly as far
to the side away from a passing car as he can.  Before we used it he would attempt to run away.  He's also wild
about bunnies and had the same reaction to them.  Now he will show interest in bunnies but rarely does more
than look in their direction.  He's quite a gentleman on walks and many of my neighbors just love him.
Additionally, we are now attending obedience training. Marty's a smart guy and he wants to please us but at the
obedience facility he refuses to "perform." LOL!  He prefers to sit once, take a treat for it and then lays down so that
we can't work with him any further.  The trainers find him quite funny.
We love our daily walks with Marty.  We love to play with him.  He seems to really love a cheese filled bone I got for
him.  We joined a local dog park so that he can run off-leash and get out all his boxer energy.  I think he misses
playing with the two big dogs he had at his foster home.  Our little Emma just is just not going to play with him any
time soon.
Marty is officially part of our family and we adore him!

UPDATE 6/14/06 - We adopted Marty last Saturday!
He didn't eat much the first two days. Even getting him to take a treat was dodgy. He was sweet and friendly but
clearly stressed by the change. He had been in foster since March, I believe, so it was a big change for him.
He's a wonderful dog...doesn't jump up on (most) people. Lays by the table during mealtimes. He's already
learned to sit for a treat. We're using a Gentle Leader because he is a major leash puller...he's afraid of cars and
LOVE bunnies so our first few walks on the leash were murder on our elbows. Marty has adjusted well to the
Gentle Leader and walks perfectly unless a car drives by on our road or he sees a bunny. Then he tries to either
get away or chase but the Leaders stops him and he gets hold of himself and continues walking.
In addition to the food aversion the first few days, Marty marked every inch of our yard that he could and most of the
mailboxes and road signs along our street. Now that he has relaxed and settled into our family, he rarely pees just
to mark and he's eating like a champ and playing with our kids and us and TRYING to play with our pug who hides
from him when she can. LOL!
We're so happy to have added Marty to our family and so proud of this lovable, sweet, funny guy! He's our first boxer
and we just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE him!!!

6/9/06 - Marty has been adopted!

5/28/06 - Marty continues to blossom with each passing day; he and his foster brothers play allll day long. Just
when I think that he's tireless I see him curled up with one of his new toys. When he first came here he had no clue
what toys were but he's finally discovered what fun they can be (whether they're his or my grandson's lol.) He's so
curious.....he hears the noises that my grandbaby's toys make and appears out of nowhere to investigate. I swear,
HE enjoys them more than my grandson does. lol
Marty is EXCELLENT with my grandson (10 months); he's gentle, he's patient and he plays the "let's chase Marty"
game. You couldn't ask for a better dog to have around children.

Marty has a beautiful new coat (thanks to his medicine) and is looking very spiffy! He's put on a few pounds and is
one handsome guy. He's SUCH a charmer.....his personality is sweet & he's not intrusive (unless you count the
many "nudges" that he gives.) lol He cracks me up when he gently "nose butts" me for attention, a treat or just to
say,"Hey....I'm here". Speaking of treats, it took Marty no time at all to learn where I keep the stash of treats so when
he desires one he sits in front of the lazy susan and stares at it until I take the hint. lol

I think that Marty would be fine with being an only dog (because he LOVES attention ) or with having "siblings" as
he loves playing and wrestling. I just can't say enough about this little guy; he's the type that makes fostering
difficult because you'll hate to see him go.5/28/06 - Marty continues to blossom with each passing day; he and his

4/28/06 - As with most new dogs Marty is trying to find his place in the pack. MOST of the time all three get along
but once in awhile he and Jackson (my  boxer) have "words" then they're over it and back to being buds.  Marty very
much wants to be everyone's best friend; he tries his  best to be as good as gold. It's obvious that someone taught
him manners as he's never jumped up on anyone, doesn't bark when people come to the door and takes his
treats as gently as can be. I've never had a problem with taking anything away from Marty...he's extremely sweet
natured and lives to be praised and stroked.
Over the weekend my grandson was here. He's discovered the  "freedom" of his walker and finds chasing the
dogs the funniest thing going. We all sat around the dining room watching Jess scoot after the dogs and laughing
as he came near them. Marty was more than willing to play the game; he chased, was chased and both had a
blast.

I'm so proud of Marty; not all dogs would join in the fun with a  nine month old.

4/17/06 - Marty might not like the rain or snow but he most definitely likes being outside in nice weather!  I take him
out and don't hear a peep out of him; he just lies there and basks in the sun. In one of the pictures that I took of him
he's observing a bug in the grass.....he's so funny the way he studies things.  This morning he was asleep in the
living room; I had the TV on but I didn't think that he was paying any attention until the Oscar Mayer commercial
came on (the one where the little children sing) and he sat right up, stared at TV and kept cocking his head back
and forth like he was enjoying the song. lol
The longer that Marty is here the more  his personality is shining through. He can be a calm little love bug or he
can be as playful as any pup that I've ever seen. He likes to cuddle up with me, he loves the attention that he gets
from my husband but he especially loves the play time with my two 4 legged boys. I give him all kinds of credit as
he's won over my shepherd/husky which is NOT easy to do. Hawkeye and Marty chase one another, wrestle on the
floor and see which one can get closer to me. (My Hawkeye is a BIG mama's boy and Marty has accomplished a
miracle by getting Hawk to share me.)   Marty  has shown a great deal of improvement with his skin condition and
demodex mange. The medicine that he's taking and his oatmeal baths are making a world of difference. He's all
ready getting some of his hair back, putting on some weight and is going to make someone a fantastic pet!

4/8/06 - I've learned a few things about Marty since his last update...... he doesn't like the rain and he's not that
keen about the snow. lol  Poor baby goes right out to our breezeway but heads back for the door as soon as he
realizes that I'm not going to the garage to take him for a ride. Did I mention what a great rider that he is? He loves
going with us and always hops right in the SUV, stays in the back seat, doesn't bark or drool and is a perfect
gentleman.

Another discover is that Marty gets along with children under 4. Our 9 month old grandson has been here and
Marty loves him and is super gentle and sweet. He allows as many kisses as our grand baby wants to give and
likes sniffing the baby in return. He has also learned to sit quietly by the high chair and wait for remnants of lunch
or dinner to be sent his way.

He's a very gentle dog that doesn't snap at food and has always allowed me to take his dish of food away from
him. He's a good eater but still needs to put a few pounds on (which we're working on daily.)  We're still working on
housebreaking as he has few accidents during the day but can hold it all night. I'm sure that he'll learn fast though
as he's a smart little guy and wants to please. He's always glad to see everyone and never turns a belly rub or a
pat on the head down.  He's so quiet and so good that I sometimes forget that he's even here. He never begs for
food nor jumps on people; he's always close behind me or sitting at my feet. If you're looking for a young dog that
is super good and soooooo sweet then by all means, get your application in for Marty!

4/2/06 - I feel very lucky to have been given this precious little guy as my first foster. He traveled 12 hours to get
here and was nothing but happy, showing me the boxer kidney bean dance and even doled out a kiss or two. It just
goes to show you that after being a stray and ending up in a shelter all he wants is a warm bed to sleep on, two
square meals a day and to please you.  Poor Marty arrived then had to deal with a sick foster mommy and daddy
and he's been SO patient. He's not "needy" or demanding; just a real lovebug. He is a loving little bundle of joy !
He rarely barks, walks just great on a leash, has wonderful manners  and is very playful. I don't believe that he's
ever had "toys" because when I gave him a squeak toy he didn't seem to know what to do with it. I left it on his bed (
I haven't crated him, instead he has his own room) and could hear a squeak every so often after I turned out the
light for the night. I just can't say enough how loving and sweet this " little man" is. If you're looking for a sweet
boxer that requires nothing but your love then Marty is your dog!

3/31/06 - Marty went to the vet the other day so we can get him on the mend.  I'll take a better picture this afternoon
and write an update for this little bundle of love.

3/25/06 - Marty has arrived thanks to the hard work of his transport coordinators & volunteers!  He was a stray to a
high kill shelter in OH that we could not refuse to help.  He appears to have a skin infection that will be looked at
asap when he gets to our vet for a check-up.  More info & updates soon on this boy!
