UPDATE 11/16/06 - Maple really has become affectionate with us in the last week or so.  She now
gives us kisses and SEEKS us out for attention!  This is a HUGE change, and one we really are happy
about.  (Although having 3 dogs competing for your attention can be a bit of a challenge!)  She proved
to me yesterday that she is definately "HOME".  While she was outside doing her business, a neighbor
was walking by the house.  Maple BARKED at her for the first time!!  She has NEVER been
protective or "territorial".  My neighbor is over a lot and is an animal lover with 2 rescued dogs of her
own, so she approached slowly, and Maple sniffed her and knew she was friend not foe.  It was really
neat to see her do this because it said to us that she knows this is her FOREVER home!  She felt it was
her "job" to protect it and us.  We look forward to the holidays with her and know that Santa will be
good to her!  Have safe and happy holidays everyone!  Til next year...

UPDATE 10/2/06 -  Miss Maple or "Maplelline" as we call her has come a long way with us in the
short time we have had her.  She has finally settled in and we think she realizes she is here FOREVER.
She no longer wants to run back in the house after going out for her business.  When we first got her,
she wanted to go out and immediately come back in.  She seemed to feel most safe inside the house.
She has always been VERY vocal, and continues to be, but now the noises seem to be due to being
content rather than the high pitched sad cries.  She enjoys her "retirement" life with us lounging around in
her new cushy bed, her short walks in the sunshine, and good food in her tummy.  We look forward to
making her comfortable and happy for as long as we have her!!

8/17/06 - Maple has found her permanent home!  Her foster Mom & Dad have fallen in love with
Maple and all her quirks and want to give her the rest of her life with them.  Congratulations to them &
to Maple!

8/2/06 - The Dr. said that Maple is in good shape for her age. He recommended we stop the Rimadyl
due to the side effects of long term use. (She will remain on the Cosequin DS.) We will stop tonight and
see how she does. He said that we should see any effects within a week. If she seems uncomfortable or
is having difficulty walking, etc then we will call him and decide on a course of treatment. She was
SUPER good at the vets and even had a nail trim.  We love this old gal!

7/27/06 - We scheduled a vet visit for Maple to be evaluated.  The meds she came into SCBR are
nearly gone and we want to know what our vet recommends as a course of treatment.  She will go on
August 2nd.  We will keep everyone informed as to how she makes out.

We continue to work on her manners daily.  She came in with impeccable manners but has had a set
back due to our residents teaching her some not so becoming ones, such as begging for food while we
eat, barking for
attention, cookies, or whatever you desire.  She has responded very well to the redirection and seems
to "get it".

Maple has made NO progress in conquering stairs other than the outdoor ones leading into the house.
There are 3 of them and she goes up and down without incident.  She will NOT go up or down our
stairs to the second floor or to the basement no matter WHAT we try.  A home without stairs would be
the best option for this girl.

She continues to become more comfortable with our routine and has even shown more interest in being
outside with us.  When she firt arrived, she did her "business" and then wanted to go back in the house
immediately. Lately she has stayed out with us for 10-15 minutes before heading to the front door.  She
is too funny!  She walks from the back yard, up the driveway, and to the front door and sits and waits
for us to let her in!! She NEVER wanders.  The basement door is OFF limits for her since she
KNOWS the stairs are beyond it and she wants NO part in them!

Maple is such a pleasure to have around.  She is quirky, but after getting to know and love her the
quirks are easy to look beyond.  We laugh at her all the time.  Sleeping on her back belly up and so
much more.  She
may be a senior gal, but she has so much love to give and still has a lot of living to do!  So, get your
applications in!!

7/17/06 - Miss Maple has been with us for 3 weeks now.  She adapted very quickly to our routine and
continues to be just one of the pack.

We have learned more about her in the time with us.  She is unable to go up or down stairs.  Although,
she will go out the front door and do the 2 very short steps.  We live in a 2 story house and she has
NEVER ventured up to the second floor.  Even at night when we, as well as the two resident dogs go
to bed.  We have tried to teach her that it is safe and tried luring her with treats to no avail.  We will
continue to work on this with her, but my guess is this old dog will not be taught that new trick!!  It may
be due to her hips or just that she has NEVER experienced them.

As we mentioned in our previous updates this girl is VOCAL!  ALL the TIME!  She is either
whimpering quietly or barking at us to meet her needs of that minute!  It is something that we have
learned to deal with, and after trying to figure it out we realize it's just "Maple making her noise."

We also have discovered that she is hard of hearing.  If we call her she rarely comes, but if we are sure
to make eye contact with her and motion her to come, she comes right away.  This explains her deep
sleep, and her being a tiny bit jumpy at times when we reach to pet her when she doesn't know we are
there.  It is no problem in her eyes, or eyes!  She is NOT a wanderer and has NEVER left the yard.
She goes outside does her thing and wants to be back in the house!

She is wonderful on a leash, no pulling whatsoever.  She is okay with very short walks.  Her hips seem
to give out at times, and she may drag a leg.  She doesn't appear to be in pain during these episodes
and continues to ambulate through it.  So, a walk every now and then is all she needs.  She prefers to
lounge her days away on a soft dog bed.

This girl deserves to live her retirement years in a home of her own where she can get all the love, food
and sleep she wants!

7/6/06 - This girl is SUPER! She is so LOW maintenance! We are amazed at the way she has adapted
to the household so easily. I recently changed schedules and both of us are working first shift, so she is
left for 8 hours a day and she has no issues being left in the house. She has IMPECCABLE house
manners and has not had any potty issues. We let her out and she does her business. Even in the
RAIN! It was raining this morning and I figured she would need some gentle persuasion to go out. Boy
was I surprised when she went right out the door without any hesitation! She has no desire to be on the
furniture even if invited. She WILL NOT get up! She prefers her cozy dog bed.

Maple is a VERY vocal dog. She makes some funky noises too. She loves to "talk" to you.
ESPECIALLY when it comes to meal time! She lets you know she is hungry and can't wait to EAT!

She has met guests without any problems. She was very friendly to everyone. She isn't an attention
"hog" and will walk away when she has had enough. She enjoys her space and will happily lay down
when her needs are met. She will be great with kids, but maybe should not be little ones living with her
only because of her hip and back issues. She is sensitive in those areas. She never is nippy or nasty
when touched there, but has yelped when pet too roughly there.

She isn't interested in cats at all. She completely ignores our resident feline, and while visiting last
Saturday, she was nose to nose with my Dad's cat and could have cared less! She sniffed a bit, then
walked away.

She is WONDERFUL with other dogs, and would be happy with another dog or as an only dog to get
all the attention and love she deserves. If you are looking for a low maintenance, easy keeper, she's
your girl!!

6/26/06 -  Maple was a bit camera shy, but I did what I could.  I will work on some better pictures in
the next few days.  She has met the residents with ZERO signs of agressions.  She was belly up,
looking to play!  She has discovered a couple of toys and has played with them.  She has some spunk
in her for an older girlie!!  She doesn't fetch, but lays on her back and chews the toys and rolls around.
She has NO food agression and allowed me to pick up her bowl while she ate.  Doesn't want to be on
furniture, and NOOOO accidents!!  What an EASY keeper!!!!  I will update more as we learn more
about her!!

6/25/06 - Maple arrived safely about an hour ago.  She is a petitie old gal at around 10.  She greeted
both myself and Rich with gentle kisses.

She seems to be a bit rickety and after reviewing her paperwork from the shelter, with just cause.  They
have diagnosed her with "moderate bilateral hip dysplasia" and "severe lumbrosacral disease with
bridging spondylosis".  They have prescribed an anti-inflammatory (Rimadyl) and a joint lubricant
(Cosequin ES).  She has had a radical mastectomy on both sides.  One on 3/16/06 and the second on
4/20/06.  Unfortunately, according to her paperwork, the biopsy from the most recent one came back
with "malignant adenocarcinoma" and she will need to have periodic diagnostics to monitor the cancer.
According to her paperwork, the repeat chest x-rays done on 5/5/06 were negative.

I would guestimate her weight around 40 lbs.  She has settled in and is taking a nap.  We will introduce
her to the dogs in a day or so and keep you all posted.
