UPDATE 11/29/06 - Mandy joyed our family on 10/30/06 and acts like she has lived with us all her
life. She get along very well with her new brother Chase (4 month old male Boxer). HE likes to
tornment her however she gets in a few licks every once in awhile too. They love to play...first kisses
and then chasing each other through the house. She has taken over my sofa in my formal living room
for her personal bed as she does not like to go up the step at night time, so I gave in and gave her the
sofa. She is the sweetest and most lovable dog I think I have ever seen. Everyone that meets her just
falls in love with her.
She had a bladder infection two weeks ago and is doing very well now. I knew something was wrong
when she had an accident in the house. Her arthritis has been acting up a little however the Vet
recommended ascripton. I think this is from Chase and her running around in the house playing all the
time.
She loves to go for car rides as she is quite a sight-seer. She only likes to ride in the front seat and she
not to fond of the seat belt but her accepts it.
She loves her treats when she comes in from doing her business outside and don't forget because she
will remind you by sitting in from of the pantry door.
My daughters just love her to death which includes several kisses, hugs and belly rubs a day.
Mandy has brought alot of joy to our family and we are blessed that you gave her to us.
10/29/06 - Mandy has been adopted!
10/16/06 - Wow, it is hard to believe October and Halloween are upon us! The air has taken a
definite chill, and the dogs are feeling more playful when they go out in the yard and feel that cold grass
under their toes. Mandy has taken to bouncing and barking and trying to get my dogs to play with her â
€“ she acts like a puppy sometimes!
I can’t believe Mandy is still here in foster. She has such a wonderful disposition and is such an
easy dog to have around that I can’t understand why people aren’t just lining up to offer her a
home! Truly, she is a great girl and we adore her. There isn’t any person or any animal that
Mandy has met that she doesn’t get along with.
Mandy has some joint stiffness that I feel is a result of her many years of being overweight. She moves
much easier these days, but after many litters of puppies and who knows how long as a dangerously
obese dog, her joints have taken quite a beating. Even though she has a sort of odd rolling gait, she still
has so much more energy than she had when she first came to us. She is a happy, well adjusted girl
with that indefatigable boxer spirit.
Winter is coming, and I bet some of you out there are looking for the perfect foot warmer for the cold
months. She’s right here waiting for you – her name is Mandy, and if you take her home I
promise you will not only have warm feet all winter, but you will also have the best friend you could
ever imagine. Won’t you please consider making Mandy part of your family? She will love you
forever.
9/18/06 - My son just turned two and we had his party yesterday. My own dogs all had to stay out in
the run as they are too rowdy for a house full of kids and food. Mandy, due to her stellar calm
personality and her lack of desire to go bolting out an open front door, was allowed to stay in the
house for the duration. She patiently endured about ten gazillion hugs from small persons ranging in age
from 2 years old to 11, she did not beg for food, she did not bark, she did not jump, she was 100%
PERFECT. She greeted everyone with wiggles and a smile, and was delighted to get lots of petting,
belly rubs and praise from the guests. She was a great representative for boxers as a breed, as she
exhibits so many of the traits that make this breed a favorite.
My hope for Mandy is that she gets a forever family soon. She is one great dog.
8/30/06 - We have begun Mandy on a thyroid medication for the next 30 days to see if it improves her
numbers. In the meantime, she has definitely lost some weight here and as a result, her energy level is
improving. When she first came here, Mandy would not climb the stairs to our second floor. While all
the other house dogs sleep in our room, Mandy made herself comfortable on the carpeted landing of
the stairs below. Her too-big waistline was really interfering with her ability to enjoy the good life with
the other dogs.
Since she came we started walking her, just a little bit at first, and now longer. Regular exercise
combined with a restricted diet has started to turn her into a fit, lean boxer machine! In other words,
she’s no longer on Jenny Craig’s Most Wanted list.
In the last week I am delighted to report that Mandy has taken to climbing the stairs several times a
day. I’m working at home most days now, and Mandy spends her days with the other dogs,
snoozing at my feet in the master bedroom while I work on the computer. She’s up here at night,
and as many times a day as she wishes to be! We have had to loosen her collar twice now, and she
has got a nice fold of loose skin going where she used to have a great big roll of padding on her waist.
Mandy continues to get along with everyone, including our cat. Since her first day here we have not
seen her exhibit anything but friendly enthusiasm. She is completely trustworthy with my children and
with other dogs. She is a fantastic dog when visitors come to the house, doesn’t bark or jump.
Mandy is a great girl. While I am sorry she has not yet gotten a forever family of her own, I am happy
for her to stay with us for as long as she needs. She is a delightful, loving dog with a super personality.
She would make a great fit to any household.
8/17/06 - Mandy came to us with a skin tag, a sizeable lump on her rear right leg, and a serious weight
issue. I finally got Mandy to the vet for bloodwork and an evaluation on her lumps. Her bloodwork
came back on the very low end of normal. Normal range for T4 antibodies are 1-4, she came back at
1.3. Within normal, but low. FT4 normal count is 8-40, hers came back at 9. The vet felt it was
worth putting her on a thyroid medicine (thyroxine) for a month to see if it improves her weight and
general health. The medication is not expensive & costs a little under $20 per month.
The vet said both of the lumps are on the surface and not attached to underlying tissue, but without
biopsies they are unable to determine if they are mast cell or not. Since the estimate in NJ for the two
lumps removal and biopsy is between $900 and $1000 (OUCH!), we will be holding off on the
removal until we can get her to one of our vets that gives a better rate.
In the meantime, Mandy continues to be just an absolutely LOVELY foster and I would take ten more
just like her in a heartbeat. She is one of the nicest fosters I have ever had the pleasure of having in my
home!
8/8/06 - Mandy continues to be an excellent foster in our home. She still gets along with everyone
here, without exception. Mandy is friendly, calm, tolerant, and affectionate. Even after a few weeks,
at which point we often really get a good picture of a dog’s personality, Mandy continues to
impress us with her gentle nature and good manners. She doesn’t bark or jump, and really just
enjoys being around the family. Mandy doesn’t like to climb stairs, we are not sure if it is because
it is such an effort with her weight or if she has some joint pain that makes it uncomfortable for her.
She sleeps downstairs without complaining. Occasionally we will find she has decided to work her
way up to the sofa, but mostly she just spends the night on her dog bed, snoring happily away. She
can be trusted not to get into things or destroy anything when left to her own devices, so, although she
is extremely good in her crate, she gets free run during the daytime and at night. Mandy actually has
more freedom than any foster I’ve ever had as she is such a well-mannered girl she just doesnâ
€™t need to be confined.
Mandy is getting into a little better shape, although she still needs to have her thyroid bloodwork done.
Her appointment has been made and we will update her page once we have her results. She also has
some itchy skin that we are controlling with bendadryl and a little olive oil in her diet for good skin
health.
Mandy really likes to be petted and to have her belly rubbed. When you invite her over to get some
attention she is at her happiest. The only thing that could make her happier is to have a home of her
own where she doesn’t have to be in line with so many other dogs and small children to get her
turn for some one-on-one time. Won’t you please consider giving this wonderful girl a forever
home?
7/16/06 - Mandy here – foster mom is too busy chasing the skin kids around to send in my update
so I am taking matters into my own hands and writing this myself. I have only one thing to say:
SOMEONE PLEASE ADOPT ME AND FEED ME SOMETHING! I’M STARVING TO
DEATH!!! My foster mommy is a real nice lady and I love her lots and lots, but someone tell that
woman how much food a real dog needs to eat! I think she has mistaken me for a Chihuahua!
Lack of sufficient meals aside, this is a pretty nice place to stay. I’d love to be part of this family
because they have everything I like- dogs for me to be pals with and give kisses to, little kids who give
me hugs and pretend I’m a pony, a kitty cat who isn’t afraid of me and who will even play
with me when I wag my tail at him and smell him. Best of all there are people who will pet me and rub
my belly. I love people so much, I really, really want to have a family of my own. Foster mom says Iâ
€™m slimming down some, so I guess this diet is working. She says I have to get in good shape so if I
have a family with kids or other dogs that I won’t have to work so hard to keep up with
everyone. Even though I like to be with you I’m also good at having my quiet time. I love being
in my crate and I don’t make messes in it at all. I’m a real polite lady, I know my manners –
I don’t jump, I don’t bark, I don’t growl or anything. I am REALLY good at wiggling my
little boxer tail and I really do have a boxer kidney bean dance that will be easier to see when I get in
better shape.
I can’t wait to have a family of my own, Won’t you please think about making me part of
yours?
7/9/06 - Think Star Jones before gastric bypass surgery. Kirstie Alley before Jenny Craig got her
number. Now add brown fur, four legs and a tail, and you've got Mandy!
Mandy is a little on the plus size side these days, so we've got her at our own version of Canyon Ranch
for Boxers. She's going on the Hollywood diet and getting herself into shape so she'll be ready for her
forever family. She's got all the basics down pat - if you want a dog who is good with everyone, that's
our Mandy. Kids? Absolutely! Small kids? Even better! Other dogs? No problem. Cats? Okey
dokey. Mandy is your love-everyone kind of dog, she'll integrate easily into any household. Many is
crate-trained, leash-trained, knows her basic obedience commands, and is totally housebroken. Her
only issue right now is her weight, and she'll be evaluated for any possible medical issues that might be
keeping her from shedding the pounds. In the meantime, she'll be hanging out here with her boxer
buddies and the kids, waiting patiently for a forever home. If you are looking for a boxer girl who is
quiet and good with everything and everyone, she's right here waiting for you!
7/3/06 - Mandy comes to us from a shelter in PA. She was a stray. She has had puppies not to long
ago. She is just so sweet. Mandy loves everyone. She is definetely over weight. I don't think its from
eating to much, as she is not a big eater. I think she needs some exercise and some good loving. She
seems to love everyone she meets. Right now she is with 5 other dogs and is doing great. She has not
had any accidents in the house. Will up date as soon as I know a little more about her.
