UPDATE 1/18/11 - I am sorry to report that after a 3 month struggle with conjestive heart failure,
which was attributed to his heart worm, Jo Boxer left for the Rainbow Bridge. His family misses him
dearly.
UPDATE 11/1/07 - It's been a whole year since Jo joined us and what a wonderful year it has been
with the exception of the heart worm incident; which we all survived - I think it was hardest on the
humans in our family because Jo seemed to just role with it. Saturday was Jo's one year anniversary. It
was a windy day and someone did not lock the gate and it swung open and as in the past Jo took it
upon himself to take an adventure. His dad got in the car to drive around the neighborhood and me and
the kids started out on foot. We were walking down the driveway calling his name and he appeared all
wiggly tail and happy. We, of course, made a big deal of this because he has NEVER returned on his
own. Jo was very happy and gladly came in the house and was greeted by his fur sister who we believe
was proud of him too for returning on his own. She always tells him that he cannot run off and how
good he has it with us. We believe this was a great way to celebrate our one-year anniversary with a
very wonderful boxer boy!
UPDATE 8/13/07 - We are approaching our 10 month anniversary with Jo and I must say that we all
feel like he has always been a part of our family. His personality has really come out. He is a talker
and he likes to be heard. You cannot put on your shoes or coat without Jo thinking that it is time for his
walk. My son calls him "Sir Barks-a-lot" for a good reason. When the time comes for his walk (2x
daily), he lets his voice be heard, jumps around and literally wiggles his head into his collar, of course,
after he sits. However, I do not believe that his butt actually touches the floor. Jo has been camping
quite a few times this summer and really enjoys it. He gives our family a lot of laughs and we all love
him very much. Thank you SCBR for his prescious boy.
UPDATE 2/19/07 - Jo has been with us 4 months! This past weekend we went to a play group
where his foster mom takes her dog and foster pups, she was glad to see him and thought he looked
great. I think he was a bit overwhelmed with all the dogs, he preferred all the people's attention and
boy do those boxers know how to get someone to touch them. He continues to be a great dog. I must
say that he has NOT enjoyed the Western New York weather and he cannot wait until its nicer out.
He so much wants to explore our back yard, its too cold out there and he runs back in. His older sister
(9.5 years) is getting older by the day and he still respects her and tries very hard to get her to play, a
bit here and there but her old legs don't hold her up as well and she has to rest - Jo still amazes us and
knows when she has had enough and leaves her alone - he usually goes and finds my 8 year old son -
he'll always play with him! Jo completed his obedience training even with all the missed days ! due to
weather and holidays - he is doing much better on his down stay - this is not his favorite thing to do. If
he could talk I am sure he would tell us a few things.
UPDATE 11/20/06 - I must say that Jo has adjusted very well as has our other dog. They play so cute
together; nothing like watching 2 boxers tug-a-war on a small unsuspecting soft toy; it takes about a day
and a half for them to destory one but, they do it so well together. Jo continues to be on his best
behavior. I can honestly say that there has not been an instance of him needing any discipline. I was a
bit worried about that because our other dog is so well behaved but, once again, it is like Jo's been with
us forever. Another example, I have always "vacuumed" my animals even the cat and guess who
"enjoys" to be vacuumed? Jo - he follows me when I vacuum and gives me a look if I didn't do it long
enough for him. It's quite wierd that my other animals enjoyed it but, now Jo - he's made for us. Here's
a sad story... it was Penelope's 9th birthday on 11/17/06 and all was well, I returned from grocery
shopping, put the bags on the floor as usual, Penelope was sniffing the bags as usual and, of course, Jo
joined in. Well, let me tell you, he saw the mean side of his sister, when she attacked him (more noise
than anything) but, Jo's feet could not get him away fast enough from her. Poor boy, girls can be
nasty!!! Penelope made it up to him, she sheepishly delivered a toy to him and pushed it in his face as if
to say... sorry brother. They made up and all is well. My husband took Jo to his first obedience class
today, the teacher who instructed for my other two dogs, was very impressed with Jo. He obviously
had some previous schooling. We will keep you updated on his education.
UPDATE 10/30/06 - We picked up Jo on Friday evening; his foster mom had a tear in her eye when
we left and it is understandable. Jo is a great dog. He met his older sister, Penelope (almost a 9 yr. old
boxer) and they hit it off great. They have played a bit of "bumper boxer" (a game where they try to get
the closest to the family member playing with them) and with some soft toys but Jo seems to understand
that Penelope is an elder and he respects her. He had a few family visitors to welcome him and has met
most of our neighbors and their dogs. Jo has enjoyed the special attention that he received over the
weekend and especially enjoyed the "boys only" Sunday night football game; he gets to sit on the
furniture in the "man-room" where the festivities take place. He has formed a nice bond with my kids
especially my 8 year old son; he listens very well to the commands given him by my son and even my 5
year old daughter. We have taken many walks and after the initial excitement of the adventure, he
stops pulling and walks nicely. Penelope (female) doesn't understand why he stops sooo many times to
smell and lift his leg; she looks at me with quite a puzzled face. I have to explain to her that's what boy
dogs do! We have very much enjoyed the opportunity to open our home to such a great dog and look
forward to the many hours of fun and laughs that we know he will bring. I can say that we all love Jo
and it's like he's been with us forever. We will update again soon.
10/27/06 - Jo Boxer has been adopted!
10/11/06 - Jo continues to do very well in his foster home. He has gotten much better at knowing
where not to lift his leg in my house, but he has an accident while visiting a new home. He still is a very
relaxed dog, however has become much more playful with his foster brother Moses in the backyard.
They love to play chase and have clothes-lined eachother a couple times (ouch!). Joe enjoys being
outside, so I would recommend that his forever home have a safe fenced in yard. He loves to look out,
lay in the sun, rub his head under low brances, and occasionally say "hello" to the neighbors. Jo also
loves going for walks as I mentioned before. He puts the brakes on as soon as he knows that we are
getting close to home!
So excited!! I took Jo to a social play group at a local dog training facility. I like to call it doggy happy
hour. He did soooo well. Got along with all of the dogs, tolerated some friendly sniffing, and made a lot
of new friends. I must admit that he did mark a couple spots, I tried to stop him beforehand
unsuccessfully...all three times! Oh well, it was worth cleaning up after him to see how much fun he had.
The staff were very impressed with his mannerism and behavior. Jo is so awesome, please consider
giving this gentle boy a place in your family and heart.
9/23/06 - Great news today from the vet. Joe's tests came out ok. They said the enlarged nodes may
be due to the heartworm treatment and to monitor the size of them. HUGE relief for me! Thank you to
all (Jill, Jackie, Linda, Jeri) for the support and encouragement!!
9/20/06 - This Jo's foster mom. Hate to say it, but I'm a mess. I noticed that Jo had enlarged
submandibular glands, and what I thought was a mass on his chest. Took him to the vet yesterday and
the vet said the mass was actually another lymph gland that was swollen. Additionally, the vet said 5 out
of 8 other nodes were swollen. He said it's very suspicious especially because he is not running a temp.
I took him this morning to get the nodes aspirated. The vet said that the only other possibiity is that his
lymphatic system may have been affected by the heartworm treatment in July. So I'm trying to be
positive. But...you know how that goes.
Please keep Jo in your thoughts. Hope to have a good update for everyone. Lab results should be
back in 24-48 hours.
9/17/06 - Jo went for a walk with us today. We played outside in the back yard. He is starting to be a
little more responsive to Moses' attempts to play. He prefers to take it easy though, probably still
coming out of his shell from his long journey and transitions. We are still working on learning that he can
mark his territory outside only. Some accidents in the house, but I'm shaking a can with coins in it to let
him know it's not OK! He is learning. Will keep you updated.
9/16/06 - Jo is a pleasure. A true southern gentleman with all the charm and a cool collected
demeanor. He got to meet and play with Moses today. They got along well. Jo kept calm despite all
of Moses' attempts to stir him up. He tolerated my crazy dog's antics, only letting him know that he had
enough when Moses jumped on his back!
Jo went for a walk today and he is a great walker! He did not pull a bit. He made sure to leave his
"mark" many times along the way on bushes and fire hydrants!
He got to meet both males and females (people) and got along well with everyone he has met so far. He
sleeps well in his crate...so quiet! He likes his crate, retreating to it on his own at times and enjoys
spending time outside as well. I put a bed outside for him and he likes to lay down and rest (and to get
away from Moses for a bit too I think!!).
Jo is a great boy, we are enjoying having him so far! He likes it here, but can't wait for his forever family
to find him. They are going to be so lucky to have this calm, loving dog.
9/15/06 - Jo has come all the way from Louisianna. This cajun cutie is a fawn male with a black
muzzle, white tips on his paws, a white chest, and a little more white on his face. He got here the same
way as Bayboo and Diamond. Also, thanks to all who helped to safely get him here. Jo was very quiet
tonight. He sniffed my 3 year old male boxer Moses, but wanted to rest up after his long trip here.
9/15/06 - Jo Boxer is about 2 yrs old, he was a stray to a Louisianna shelter who came in starved. He
has been treated for heartworm but is now clear, so the shelter did a good job with him. We were
asked to help take him in by a nice lady who works with getting dogs up from LA that need help. Jo is
said to like male and female dogs and is not dominant. More updates soon from his foster Mom!
