UPDATE 11/30/07 - After testing positive for heartworm and two heartworm treatments since he's been adopted
in Aril 2006, Ghost finally tested negative for heartworm yesterday (11/29/06) - WHEW! The verterinarian said she
never had to give 2 treatments for heartworm before, and Ghost even tested slightly positive 3 months after the 2nd
treatment!
The reason we were concerned is he occassionally gets into a caughing fit, and the most recent one he had
yesterday had us very concerned it was heartworm. After the heartworm test came back negative, the vet now feels
it's just an upper respiratory problem, and can be easily treated.
Ghost gave everyone a friendly lick at the hospital yesterday, he's a hit wherever he goes!
UPDATE 4/1/07 - Just wanted to give you a one year update with Ghost - the friendliest teddy bear dog you'd ever
want to meet!
We are dealing with some health problems with our Ghost boy. Just last Thursday, Ghost had a seizure. He froze
up, his eyes dialated, and lost his bladder and bowel control. After this, we went into shock, which I had my wife
immeidately take him to the hospital where I work part time. When he got to the hospital, his gums and tongue
were still as white as the color of his coat. They took x-rays, did some blood work and give him oxygen. After 3
hours in the hospital, his color started to come back and we took him to the emergency hospital for observation
overnight. All results came back negative - EXCEPT he is still testing positive for heartworm! They did a buddy coat
test which tests for live worms and that came back negative. He was caughing quite a bit after he got home, but
today I haven't heard him caugh yet, that's after playing outside for a little while with our other boxer.
I did give him interceptor 1 week before his seizure, could that have caused it? I am working with my verterinarian
who has fallen for this guy (as has everyone else including everyone at the emergency hospital - they said he was
quite the gentlemen, as he wouldn't leave his cage until they called his name!). We feel we need to treat him for
heartworm again, but will wait a couple more weeks before we do that. Before I spend another $500 for a
pulmanory test, I want to rid him of the heartworm and see how he goes from there.
I'll give another update in a month or so to let you know how he's doing - he's in terrific care and we're resolved to
get this loveable guy healthy once and for all!
By the way, he did complete obedience training, but he tested positive for heartworm right before he was
supposed to have graduation, and I never got the certificate mailed to me. I plan on asking her for that soon.
UPDATE 7/13/06 - This is my 3 month update. Ghost is great! He loves everyone, including his new sister as they
play together all the time (which is one reasone we wanted another boxer!). He simply ignores our cat, which is
better than what his sister does! Ghost loves to take walks, and is the center of attraction when we walk through
parks. His sister likes to sit quietly in the car, while Ghost loves to stick his head out of the window while his lips
flaps in the wind! Is historical to watch that! Ghost graduates from obedience training next week, and it certainly
has helped. He sits on command, and goes down on command most of the time. He comes to us now when we
call him. He walks next to us without pulling like he did when we first got him. He no longer jumps on people when
they visit.
I have started him on heartworm prevention, and he continues to be a healthy and happy dog! We're glad to see
his puppies were adopted, if they turn out anything like Ghost, the adopted owners will be thrilled!
4/9/06 - Ghost has been adopted!
4/1/06 - As you can see Ghost sleeps with his tongue hanging out of his head...very funny! In the other picture my
Baxter is holding Ghost as they slumber together after a long day of playing.
All is good and we are all getting along now. It can be tense at times, but with every passing day the bond between
each of them becomes stronger. I have a feeling they are in the begining stages of taking over so if these emails
stop then you'll know things have really gone to the dogs...LOL...
3/25/06 - I would like to introduce you to one of our new intake Ghost. He is a 2 yr old pure white Boxer. His ears
are not cropped but the tail is. He still has his dew claws and is not neutered yet, but will be soon. Ghost is a
typical Boxer hyper and full of life.
Ghost is a great boy who is need of a great home without a lot of activity. He is loving, playful, and loves to give
tons of kisses! When Ghost was surrendered he was full of fleas, which when noticed he was taken into the
enclosed shower area and was given the royal treatment. Once he was clean and flea free he was pure white not
yellow like he looked when picked up.
We are trying to get him socialized with the other 5 boxers here (Baxter, Rocky, Gunther, Shayna, and Joe) but as to
be expected it is a slow process. Ghost not being fixed has more of an "attitude" then the rest but it's Joe who is
the more protective boy and for some reason feels the need to demand his masculinity be noticed and admired by
all...LOL...
I have attached some photos finally of this boy and hope we can place him soon into a great home who will love
him and care for him like all our voiceless friends should be cared for!
