UPDATE 10/14/06 - Duke and his new family (us) could be poster children for adopting a senior
boxer. We could never have imagined how easy it is. He is mild mannered but is protective in a
healthy way. He does not get up on furniture except for a front end hug. He walks great on a leash but
does not need one because he obeys your commands even with temptations of running squirrels and
cats. He might like to go, but he won't if you say NO. He has asked for a bed in almost every room
and we were happy to oblige. It really isn't much to ask for especially given the unconditional love we
get in return:
He plays soccer with his "skin brother", reminds us when he needs meals, has trained his "skin brother"
to feed and walk him, has made our german exchange student feel very loved and even lets our cat "Mr
Baby" share space with him. He even snores louder than I do, so the family has forgotten it is me
making that noise. Mostly, he kisses us many times each day and we hope he knows we are luckier
than he is.
UPDATE 9/14/06 - Duke remains consistently wonderful. Not only do we think so, but so do our
family and friends. We do not require them to say that (well, maybe a little). Honestly, people meet him
and say they can "feel the love eminating from him". Well, so do we. Adopting a "senior" is the best. He
truly inspires us to want more boxers...He is lovey, well trained, obedient, handsome...we could go on
forever, he is the best.
In true boxer form, Duke is training us well. Not only is he attached to me at the hip, I appear to be
attached to him in a similiar fashion. My son says many times a day how cute Duke is, ie,"Isn't Duke
cute when he woos for his food?"...We are all in love with Duke and it appears he feels the same about
us...A true love story
7/14/06 - Duke has been adopted!
6/30/06 - Duke was released from the Newark Shelter at noon. I picked him up and immediately took
him to the groomer for a nice oatmeal bath and a very much needed clean up. He was an absolute
gentleman throughout.
We are taking the advice of Liz and letting he and Abby Girl get to know each other separately and
carefully. As he is not neutered, he started on the wrong foot with her trying to get her to enjoy his
advances, which she wanted no part of.
We have kept them separated and yet together with Duke in his crate and Dick, I, and Abby watching
TV and reading in the same room.
We are enjoying having Duke around, and very honestly, he is making it easy for us as he has no
demands except his time for loving. Dick and I take turns with he and Abby so when we do get them
together no one feels threatened by the other's status.
I understand that Duke's owner died, and he was discarded by the family. I have to tell you they don't
know what they are missing. Here is a guy who wants only to be loved. He will make someone a
wonderful campanion. He is wonderful on the leash and even when he sees something he thinks he
might like to have, i.e. a rabbit, squirrel or another dog, he will try to get closer but would not dream of
pulling you.
Here is his first picture -- enjoy and don't forget to call -- he may be an older dog, but for those of us
who have a place in their hearts for a senior, this guy is it!!
