UPDATE 2/2/08 - I have very sad news to relay. We had to put Nola to sleep today. She went into Congestive Heart
Failure 3x in the last week. We brought her home yesterday to say our goodbyes and decided we would take her
back when she started to labor to breathe. She spent most of last night sitting up because she could not breathe if
she layed down. We knew she only had a couple of years because her heart was so bad. She would have been 2
on March 24. Unfortunatley it was congenital and as far as I know none of the other pups in the litter has a heart
problem. My children are taking it fairly well as we have tried to prepare them from the beginning that she would
not be with us too long. She was such a loving and wonderful dog who's life was too short. We will miss her.
UPDATE 6/24/07 - We can't believe Nola has been with us for a whole year. She is a great girl. She did go into
heat and that was a really fun experience. We are probably due again at the end of the summer. She has had 2
more fainting episodes in the last couple of months, but other that that she is a normal wiggly girl. The kids love
her sooooo much. My 6 year old son has his own little language with her and she can't get enough of him. My
daughter calls her Nolie and always wants her picture taken when the dog is hugging her. Her nose is still pink
with the black spots and the kids call it her golf course nose. So far so good with the whole heart condition. She is
taking the meds every day. She is quite the bed hog and now that she is over 55 lbs, her, my husband and I have
to fight for space in the bed. Hopefully the vet cardiologist is wrong and we will have her for a good long while. The
kids are prepared( as much as they can be) if something were to happen but I know they would be devasted,
especially my son. Nola says 'Wolf'.
UPDATE 11/1/06 - We switched Nola's food and this has really cut down on her pooping in the home. She still
continues to pee in the cage. I want to train her how to ring a bell to go out. She doesn't bark or anything to let us
know she needs to go out. She is so great with the kids. She loves to snuggle up at night. She wants her head on
the pillow. Our Bruno used to like to sleep under the covers but Nola just likes to lie right next to you on the blanket.
Her ears are so soft I could spend all day just rubbing them. No fainting episodes lately and no heat yet.
UPDATE 10/2/06 - We have decided not to get Nola spade as the risk is too great with her heart condition. We are
still having a tough time housebreaking her. She poops or pees in the house at least 2x or more each day. She
also pees in the cage almost everytime she is in there, even though it might only be for as short as 20 minutes or
up to 4 hours. The vet says she should be able to hold it for 7 hours. She will also poop in the cage and then eat it.
It is tough to come home and clean the cage and then her blankets and then give her a bath, not to mention
brushing her teeth. Today she stole a jelly doughnut which was in a ziplock bag way back on the counter. I could
not get it away from her as she was under the dining room table and would growl at me everytime I tried to get it.
She really scared me. I finally got a broom because I didnt want her to eat the zipper part of the bag and tried to
push it away from her. I have never seen her have food aggression like this before. She did eat the rest of it. She
also jumped our 4 ft gate today so that she could be in the front yard with my husband while he was cutting the
grass. I am beginning to think she has separation issues which may account for the going in the cage. My
husband is really about on his last straw. We did not have these problems with our male boxer and I don't know if
it is a female thing or in part due to her bad heart. She is still really cute though and is great with my kids. They love
her.
UPDATE 9/3/06 - Well, I spoke with the vet and we need to make our appt to get Nola spayed. With her heart
condition there is an increased risk but she has been on her medicine. She has fainted on me twice. She just kind
of drops and is like a dishrag. Her eyes are open and her tail is wagging but she cannot move. It is a little scary. I
believe she is also partially deaf. Other than that, we are trying to refine her housebreaking. The kids love her and
they play, play, play. I was considering adopting Oliver, who is also white, but need to put that thought on hold for
now. I just broke my foot and am in a walking cast which makes getting around a little tough.
UPDATE 7/27/06 - Unfortunately, the news from the cardiologist is not good. Nola has severe subaortic stenosis.
She will go on Beta blockers to try to prevent the heart from working too hard. He does not expect her to live past 2.
On a positive note, I have heard from other people who say their dogs had "bad hearts" and lived a good long time.
Everyone who gets to know her loves her. People have stopped me on the street to ask what kind of dog she is
(her all white color and pink nose with brown spots must look unusual). Friends who have babysat her go thru
"withdrawal" and want to see her again. She is a real blessing to us and we will treasure her for what time we
have. Sappy but true.
UPDATE 7/8/06 - Calliway- renamed Nola ZsaZsa Feleur (Nola means "white shouldered") has been home with
us for one week today. Thanks to Jill for meeting us so our trip time was shortened. During the first week Nola
was introduced to the whole family- Speigel (9year old choc lab), Teddy and Duffy (9year old toy poodles) and Piper
(7year old Brittany Spaniel). She also got along great with all of her aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. She
sure liked sharing the king size bed with Mommy, Daddy and her new 3year old sis in the hotel on the drive home.
We found she loves swimming in the pool at grandmom's. She has been sleeping 8 hours at night in the crate
and loves to nap on the princess pullout couch. Today was her third party in one week and she had a blast.
Everyone thinks she is adorable and loves to cuddle and snuggle her. One of the 4 year old partygoers today
asked why she had black spots on her nose. I told him she ate pudding and we can't get it out. He wanted to know
why we didn't give her a bath. That was a joke as she does have the most adorable blacks spots on her nose just
like a lot of her siblings. She did get some orange soda spilled on her head which has yet to come out after 3
baths and a back brush. On an unfortunate note, we got some upsetting news from the vet yesterday. We were
hoping that Nola's heart murmur would be just a simple fading puppy murmur but that does not seem to be the
case. Her pulses are weak and her heart thru the stethescope does not have the normal 'lub dub' sound, it is
more like a hissing or washing machine sound. She does seem to sleep and cuddle a lot and I don't know if that
is just because she is a babe or due to the heart condition. We have an appt with a vet cardiologist for Tuesday
and should learn more. Hopefully it is just mild aortic stenosis and she will be able to live a happy and wonderful
life(if not as long as desired). I sure know she has a lot of support and love from our entire family as everyone has
fallen head over heels in one short week. Pray for good news. Woof Woof.
7/1/06 - Callaway has been adopted!
6/2/06 - Callaway is getting so big, she will is 10 weeks old today. She is a good puppy but does tend to boss the
other pups around a bit she does know better than to mess with the big dogs. She loves playing with all the other
dogs and is sweet as can be. I took some new pictures of Calli she has changed so much!
5/11/06 - Callaway is a great little girl, she is very sweet. She loves to romp and play in the yard. She was a great
girl at the vet yesterday and got her first vaccination which she took like a champ. We found out that Callaway has a
mild heart murmur. The Dr. was not overly concerned about the murmur as many puppies have them (that's why it
is commonly called a "Puppy Murmur") and most dogs outgrow them. She recommended to have her rechecked in
3-4 weeks when her next puppy shot will be due anyway. Calli weighed in at 7 pounds 2 ounces.
5/5/06 - See Gypsy's page for my Mom and Ghost's page for my Dad. I will be available for adoption when I am 8
weeks old, on May 19th. Apply now if you are interested in adopting one of us as we will go quickly & they cannot
hold us for you to get through the application process.
