UPDATE 1/18/08 - My Beau is 14!!!!
He has been with me two years, arriving at the Riverview the first week of 2006 at the age of 12. He continues to be
a perfet gentleman, welcoming foster after foster with rarely an issue. Beau is starting to show his age. His arthritis
is worsening so that he almost never attempts the stairs to the bedrooms, and is occasionally having accidents in
the house. But he still loves to go for walks, and has a hearty appetite, and likes to lay around at my feet when I am
home.
I am blessed to have had these years with him, and will enjoy whatever time we have left. Thank you SCBR for
bringing such a wonderful man into my life!
UPDATE 11/27/06 - Beau is starting to show his age. He is losing his hearing, but responds to visuals, like a wave
to 'come'. While he is certainly housetrained and can hold it all night, he leaks sometimes if he has to struggle to
rise from a lying position. We wash dog bed covers frequently, so it not an issue except that it shows that he is
aging.
UPDATE 8/18/06 - Beau is my "beau"! He is a perfect fit with me, my home and my lifestyle. He gets along
wonderfully with my little skittish kitty, and has welcomed a number of male and female fosters to the Riverview. We
just had a lump on his elbow looked at, and the vet assured us that it essentially just a big callous. Beau LOVES
going for walks and behaves perfectly ojn a leash. He also loves going for rides and behaves perfectly in the car.
He took a short vacation with a friend (another Boxer-lover)while I was up working at PetFest, and enjoyed his trip to
her lake house. (Maybe next time I can go too!) Beau impresses everyone he meets with his manners and
personality. I love him dearly and am so glad that SCBR gave him a Second Chance!
UPDATE 6/22/06 - Beau is at home here at the Riverview. He has welcomed and said good-bye to many a foster,
and has gotten along with almost all of them. That cannot be said of all of them to him! We love our afternoon
walks, and He is a perfect gentleman on the leash. He is a gentleman all in all, and we are happy that he made his
way to our home so that is is now his home, too.
5/06 - Beau has been adopted!
4/6/06 - Beau is perfect! Well, other than being a bit older than most dogs in Rescue. He fits in perfectly with the rest
of his family at the Riverview, and gets along with everyone he meets. Gentleman Beau took a trip to Eastern Maine
this past weekend and as usual, entranced everyone he met with his mellow attitude. We visited friends earlier this
month, They have 2 Goldens and a Dalmatian, and Beau happily made friends with all of them. When the next door
neighbor Brittany came to visit, Beau was haoppy to meet him too. Unfortuantely, that feeling was not mutual so
Scamp had to go back home. At this house, if you can't play nice with your friends, you can't play! Although he is
older, Beau does not have any health issues and he is able to stay home all day while I am at work. He does not
like the crate too much, but as he has no bad habits, he doesn't need to be crated. Unlike my Tika (who wears a
Gentle Leader), Beau walks beautifully on the leash without pulling. He is fun to watch when he chases the hens in
my backyard. He has no interest in them as a snack--just as a moving toy that he 'leaves' alone when asked to. He
is funny-- he doesn't "Sit" on comand and I haven't been able to teach him to do that. But he "Comes" on command,
will "Leave it", knows to do his business outside and walks nicely on the leash. Like most older dogs, Beau does
sleep alot. My opinion is that that is a good thing, especially because I work full time--and I like to sleep, too! Beau is
welcome to stay here as long as he needs a foster home--but he would be happy to move on to his own 'real' home
if he is the man for you.
1/17/06 - Beau had his checkup at the Vet on Friday. He was oohed and aahhed over and compared to my Rocky,
and to another favorite former foster, Monson, who I still miss. All in all he definitely got the 'thumbs up' from this
Boxer-loving bunch! Happily, Beau is Heartwom and Lyme negative, and is now UTD on his shots. He weighed 71
pounds (so my guess of 65 was pretty good especially as he may have gained a few pounds and could still stand to
gain a few more) and is very healthy for a dog his age. His heart and lungs sound great.
Beau returned to the vet for his neuter today. He did fine, had his toenails done while he was under anaesthetic, and
I picked him up at the end of the day for the ride home. Beau is still pretty groggy. That's fine with me, so I don't have
to worry about him feeling uncomfortable (or wondering what he's missing!). The vet told me to keep an eye on his
incision, to make sure he doesn't swell up too much. I guess there was alot in there to be removed--the vet said he
was "quite well endowed!" Right now he is snoozing on one of the many dog beds and my son is
going to come over tomorrow while I am at work to make sure he is comfortable and not bothering his incision. I do
have an Elizabethan collar that we can use if we need to, but I prefer not to if not necessary as they are awkward for
the dog--and us!
Beau is a sweetie and now he is ready for his new home! Come and get him!
1/11/06 Beau has a visit with the vet on Friday for a Heartworm check and updated vaccinations. Then, his neuter is
scheduled for Tuesday. Beau is a wonderful guy! He has the best personality, and everyone he meets comments
on how much of a gentleman he is. My timid little Tiger-kitty finally met Beau face to face yesterday. He had seen her
earlier in the week and reacted with a happy moan and a nub-wagging. But it took her a few more days to feel safe
around him. So now I can say that he is "Okay with cats and dogs". I am also quite sure that he would be fine with
children over 4--Beau does not jump or play rough, or bump into people and knock them over. I am amazed that he
does not know any 'commands' because he is so well behaved. He does know his name, and he comes when
called, but he doesn't even know 'sit' yet! I haven't crated him since he is so well behaved in the house, but I need to
try that so I can report on his crate behavior. Beau is definitely house trained, but some days I work too long and he
can't quite hold it. (I know he knows what he's supposed to do, because the accidents have been near the door to
go out. ) Beau even helps me keep the house clean--he is my first foster who will pick up and eat all of the little bits
of spilled kibble that decorate my floors. Beau is such a fantastic guest that he is welcome here for aslong as ne
needs to stay--but you don't know what you're missing!
1/2/06 Beau is a wonderful gentleman. He is still a little sad at leaving his family, but has fit in beautifully here at the
Riverview. He met my two boxers with his nub a wiggling. He even met my friend's little Cocker Spaniel (who is
used to big Boxers) with a wiggling nub. Beau has a good appetite, but has no food issues--with me or with the
other dogs. He quickly learned that the big fenced in back yard is fun, but has not shopwn any interest in any of the
toys here. Tika, on the other hand, discovered his one toy and comandeered it like all the others! Beau loves the
numerous soft dog beds that are scattered throughout the house (he already has full house privelages due to his
impeccable manners). He has not tried to climb on any of the furniture! He spent his first night secluded in the
baby-gated kitchen, and he did moan loudly enough to wake me up when it was his morning time (which was a little
earlier than my morning!)
12/31/05 Bo-Jangles arrived at the Riverview Boxer Hostel on New Year's Eve to begin a new year and a new life with
Second Chance. Bo is a charming senior whose mom had to go into a nursing home. He rode quietly through
several car and transporter changes on his transport today from New York to Maine. He is thin, and the very cold air
today had him shivering even in the car. So I covered him up with a warm fleece, and he curled up on the front seat
of my car for the final leg of his trip. Bo will be headed in to the vet this week for a neuter (no more dangles for Mr.
Bo-Jangles!) He'll be heartworm checked and brought up to date on all vaccinations. Unfortunately, he did not come
in to Rescue with any paperwork documenting shots he might already have had, so we will have to do them unless
records can be found. Bo has been spritzing all over the yard, so it appears that he is housebroken and knows what
he can do where. He is secluded in my spacious kitchen so that introductions to my two canine residents can go
slowly. So far there have been several nub-wagging nose sniffs through the baby gates, with only a minmimu of
hackle raising. Bo whined a little at being alone, but has settled down on the comfy bed. He is comfortable enough
to already had a snack and a drink of water! I think Mr Bo will do just fine here, and enjoy his vacation in Maine while
he waits for his forever family.
