AMSTEL
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP FOR AMSTEL!
We thank everyone for their donations to cover Amstel's recent vet bills and we are now covered for his future bills too! You are all special people and Amstel sends boxer wiggles to you!
Amstel has Ectopic Ureters and will need surgery to correct this. We have already spent over $700 for his medicines, vet visits and tests to just diagnose his problem! He still needs to go to a specialist for the surgery.

4/6/06 - Amstel has been adopted!
2/22/06 Amstel is just the happiest most wiggly but boy I have ever met! He is constantly wagging that little nubby.
Even when I have to put his diaper on, I have a hard time getting the nub thru the hole because he is wagging it so
hard! Amstel is completely fine wearing a diaper, he allows me to check it, change, fix it, whatever. He doesn't pull
at it or try and get it off. And more amazingly, the other dogs don't try and bother with it either. I had a guest last
week, I was boxer sitting for Bailey, and I was a bit nervous, Bailey is a female and is in love with Cosmo. So I
wasn't sure how Amstel and Bailey were going to do "fighting" over Cosmo. Well no need to worry at all. I let
Amstel in from outside and he walked right past her like she didn't exist!!!!! All 4 dogs got along well for the week.
Amstel LLLOOOVVVEEEDDD the snow. He loved playing in it, he loved eating it, he loved chasing it, as you can
see by the pictures on his page, he was having a ball! I just gave him another bath tonight and he is so fluffy! I
never saw such a fluffy boxer. It is too cute! I wonder if he spent a lot of time outside since he had a doggie door
and his fur got thicker to stand the colder weather. Not that it matters, you can tell that he was very loved in his last
home. He has no fear, if I lift my hands over his head he just follows. If I make sudden motions he doesn't flinch. I
don't think he has ever been hit. He has good recall and listens when given a command, so I don't think there was
ever a need to yell at him either. He is so sweet. I don't think he knows the command "leave it" which is a god
send with my other two. Because he will pick stuff up that he shouldn't and I'm like "Amstel leave it" and there is no
response! LOL like I've given the command in a foreign language! Then my daughters freak and start yanking on
it and he thinks it is a game. He is so wonderful with my girls, they are 5 and he will come upstairs when I am
getting them ready for bed and sit in their room at the foot of their beds. Even after I leave, he will sometimes just
stay behind for a few more minutes. So sweet.
I noticed since we have had Amstel he likes to sit and watch you eat. He doesn't cry or whine or even paw at you to
get anything, you just feel eyes on you and you look over and there he is sitting in his best boxer statue pose. We
don't happen to feed our boxers from the table or give them people food. Perhaps Amstel's previous owners did.
Since he doesn't try and "ask" for anything it really isn't annoying. But FINALLY, I found a small flaw in this boy!
Was starting to think he was a Stepford dog!!!!!
Well Stelly is patiently waiting for someone to come claim him as their own, he absolutely loves it here but I know
there is someone out there who would be a perfect match for him. He doesn't ask for much of anything. Just love
and attention, he loves to go on walks and go in the car. He is a great companion and would make a great one for
you.....so come on don't wait any longer to get the ball rolling to adopt this great boy!
2/16/06 - Well Amstel had his ultra sound on Monday and they said he diagnosis is Ectopic Ureters (it is like
having an extra tube from the kidney not going into the bladder). He will need to go to a specialist to have surgery
done to correct this. It is not a life threatening condition but if not treated he will continue to leak urine for the rest of
his life.
We are checking with our vet offices to see if their specialists are able to perform this surgery, as we will be doing
this to help Amstel be drier & to be able to find his forever home!
2/7/06 - Stelly or Stellyboy is so happy go lucky. He is perfectly content to go with the flow and follow along. I think
Amstel would make a wonderful second dog, if you are considering getting a second, this is your boy. I have been
walking him more and he is great on the leash. He is only mildly interested in passing people or a dog barking
but will not pull or lunge at anyone or anything. There have been a few squabbles since he arrived and I have to
say he NEVER instigates them. Nor does he try to continue them once I put them apart. He defends himself and
has this really indignant bark (it is so funny) but he will not go after the other dog involved after the incident is over.
Whereas Cowboy and Cosmo have a bloodlust and will fight until the death! But anyway, luckily neither one of
them are up for adoption! LOL Amstel is getting more comfortable and I thought maybe some bad habits would
start rearing their ugly heads.....but no. Everything still holds true about him. I do have to say that him and Cosmo
can become quite naughty left unattended. And I do blame myself because they are so darn cute together that I
forget to reprimand them! Have to work on that!! Well that is all for now, since Amstel is so wonderful, other than
repeating myself, i don't know what else to say about him. If you are looking for a dog that already has good
manners and is lovable and huggable........this is your boy!
1/25/06 - Amstel loves my active household...my daughters and my two other boxer boys, coming....going etc. I
think he was used to a more sedate household and to thrive and really be himself, he needs this type of
household. He got to play outside over the weekend as it was rather mild here in NJ. He can run very fast and
outside liked to bark and chase and roughhouse with Cosmo. Cowboy is more anti social (he's actually a bit of a
snob) but at one point all three of them were running and chasing each other and literally all of them came running
from 3 different directions and crashed into each other! Quite funny to see.....no harm done. Amstel has an
adorable way of tilting his head when you are doing something that either interests him or puzzles him....not sure
which but it is too cute. All the previous things i said about Amstel still hold true. And I'm noticing he is very
tolerant. I do a lot of hugging and am very affectionate with my boys and Amstel does not mind being hugged
around the neck or getting up close to his face....something which will set Cowboy off. He lets you in his bowl
while eating, will politely take a treat from your hand after sitting of course, and knows the nightly ritual of going out
for the last time and then going to his kennel. He discovered the toys and just started playing with them the other
night. I walked him on a leash last night and I don't think he is much of a puller. I was able to handle him and
Cowboy in my left hand and Cosmo was dragging me down the street in my right. So I can't for sure 100% know
that Amstel is a good walker but I will take him out again alone and see what happens. Amstel takes 2 pills in the
morning and 2 at night on a daily basis that are supposed to be for his leaking issue. After a trip to my vet, it is
believed that Amstel's problem is congenital and probably not curable although further tests will need to be done.
But on the other hand, this in no way shape or form hinders his quality of life and if the truth be told anyone would
consider themselves truly blessed to have such a phenomenal dog. He will probably have to wear diapers when
inside for the rest of his life, but for all that you are getting in this wonderful, sweet, awesome dog..........that is a
minor, minor detail. I took some new pictures of him he is truly the best dog.
1/18/06 - I know everyone thinks that their foster is the best but I am here to say that Amstel is AWESOME!!!!!!! He
comes when called, sits, lays down when asked, does not jump up on you, does not go on the furniture, does not
counter surf, is house and crate trained, doesn't bark, gets along with children and other dogs, has no food
aggression or aggression in general, eats well, sleeps thru the night with no issues in the kennel....I don't know
what more anyone could ask for! He is the sweetest boy ever. He actually makes my two look bratty! He is relaxing
a bit and learning the routine around here. He is now boxing and playing with Cosmo and I have to say I stop what I
am doing to watch. There is nothing more adorable than two boxers playing. He seemed a bit nervous when I put
him in the car to go to the vet. He travels well in the car and seemed more confident on the way home. He tested
negative to heartworm and Lyme and now that we have all his vet records we will return tomorrow evening to see
what we can do about his leaking issue. I would definitely say that Amstel would love an active household with
children and other animals, maybe someone who is home during the day. He isn't the type to sleep the day
away in a kennel. He is curious and follows me everywhere all over the house. I think he is used to being home
alone all day and that just isn't the lifestyle for him. He absolutely loves everyone and waits and watches, if you
get up, he will get up, if you go sit down, he will too. He is just so accommodating and pleasant, if I didn't already
have two, I would keep him in a heartbeat.
1/14/06 - Amstel is an owner surrender who I picked up today. His owner works two jobs and felt it was not fair to
Amstel and he needed someone home more often. He is an extremely sweet, loving dog. He is absolutely
wonderful with my 4 year old daughters. Gets so excited and wags his nub when they even just walk in the room! I
gave him a bath and he is so fluffy! He hasn't eaten yet but did drink quite a bit of water and has peed alot...all
outside. He lived in a house with a doggie door so I just have to be alert to his signal. I tried rotating the dogs and
keeping them apart so he could settle in better and well i just got impatient with that. So everyone has met and all
is well so far (knock wood). Amstel has no desire to be alpha dog, something which my Cosmo has yet to realize.
So i just have to keep an eye on that. Amstel is definitely a lover not a fighter, he backs down every time Cosmo
gives him the i'm in charge look. He hasn't barked or anything but makes this cute woo woo throaty sound. And he
seems to have some sort of leaking problem which when he goes to the vet on Monday we will have checked out.
To keep my house from getting squirted I have a sweatshirt tied around his middle and he does this hilarious
thing with both his back legs, he sorta hops but just with the back legs. It is just too funny. I truly could go on and
on about him, he is SUPER! We all love him here already and can't wait for him to find his forever home....he
deserves to be loved and have each day be happy!
