UPDATE 11/28/08 - Tiki and I have finally landed "on the same page! Believe me it took a while. He was touted at
about 2 yrs.old, but when my nephew and me went to get him, we agreed he is much more a puppy...maybe 14
months or so. To tell the truth, during the first year, I was ready to take him back. He drove me up a wall with his
shenanigans! Now that he was some age on him, he's my "good buddy" (well, most of the time except when he's my
"my bad boy!!") He's a lover boy with me. He scares me how protective he is. Doesn't want anything in his yard. Good
thing we don't have company; I would have to crate him he gets so crazy when he sees people or other animals in the
yard.
This isn't a "funny" story...He broke a window. He pounced against (It's a lower Anderson awning window) when
someone came to read my electric meter too close to the house. (Cost me $400 to have the double-paned window
replaced!)
Took him to training. He barked at the trainer for six weeks. I had three "tiny" dogs in my class. I thought he might "eat"
one of them. So that didn't work very well. Unfortunately, because I live alone with very little company, he is not
"socialized." Maybe is just afraid. I'd love to know how he arrived to you guys and how many homes (I believe) he was
with before I got him because of his agressive behavior...
He didn't behave well at the vet's either. Had to muzzle him.
I considered adopting a senior to keep Tiki company, but at my age (which makes me a senior as well!) two large
dogs are just to much for me to handle.
Wishing you a bountiful Holiday Season and a year of sucessful Adoptions on wonderful boxer dogs!
UPDATE 2/14/06 - Tiki started out being a "real pest," but he's much better after being here
for the past two months. [grin] I was told he shouldn't be crated.
He will crate. I was told he had separation anxiety. Well, to a lesser degree.
I still won't let him alone when I go out for extended times. He might tear
the house apart. I heard that was what he did in the several homes where he
was purchased or placed, so I'm a bit leery.
He has a clothes "fetish." Loves to drag my clothes out of my hamper or
from any place in my bedrooms. I've finally shut the doors on the rooms, but
when you do that, there is no heat in those bedrooms! I have to open them up for
a while before going to bed. He doesn't tear up stuff...just carried them out to
the living room with that mischievous look on his mug. "Aha! Come and get it
from me if you can!"
But he's getting better, because "out of sight is out of mind."
He's got a minefield in the livingroom to play with, but well, you know how puppies
are...
Tiki is a real cutie pie! A real sweet dog. You can take ANYTHING from him which is
good. He doesn't guard his food, his toys or his bed. He does have a dominant streak.
I'm so used of female dogs, I can see he is different in attitude.
He's VERY TERRITORIAL almost from the first days he arrived. Doesn't want squirrels
on the property. Barks at anyone across the road, etc. Had a hissy fit when my neighbor
and his daughter arrived with Christmas cookies at the door. I leashed him and went
outside and he jumped up on them (which I expected. He needs some training) but
I don't think he would bite. I hope not. I don't get much company, so time will tell.
He's on a morning feeding routine now because I was eating him too much. He seems to be
house trained now. (cross fingers) I can tell he's put on maybe 10 pounds and has
filled out some.
He wakes me up almost in concert with my alarm...and leans up on the bed for a smooze.
So far he only goes up on "his" chair -- the one he commandeered upon his arrival.
But he lets me sit there, too. [grin]
I believe it's still going to be a while until I completely accept him. And he,
accepts me.
Any comments from other "rescuers" on the length of time it takes
to bond? I once had a Rottweiler who didn't bond with me at all. We were at loggerheads
until she broke her tie out and ran away, never to return. But I also had two
wonderful Rotties. So, you can't tell.
UPDATE 12/24/05 - Wanted to let you know that "Scooby" -- now, named "Tiki" after Tiki Barber of NY Giants' football
fame -- is a wonderful pup. I love him to death! He's very good -- though he is a "puppy" and at times very mischievous.
He settled in and made himself comfortable right off the bat.
Thanks so much for finishing your "leg" of his journey from New Hampshire to me. He's a great dog...
I hope you and yours have a wonderful Holiday! Tiki's the best present I've had in a very long time!
12/4/05 - Scooby arrived today thanks to his transport team! He has had several homes in his young life and was
surrendered to a shelter that we work with who knew now Scooby needed to find the right home for his needs. It is
said he has been too much energy for some and he also cannot be crated or confined in smaller areas. We are trying
him out in an indoor 4 foot x 6 foot fenced pen to see how he does with that.
Here are the comments from one of his transport volunteers: "Scooby is with his foster mom. OH MY GOD!!!! What a
cutie. He is all puppy. He calmed down and played with his toy.Het took treats so gently from my hands, I played with
him with his toy. He is a doll and with patience and obedience he is going to make some family VERY lucky to have
him."
Due to his seperation anxiety, Scooby will need a home with someone home most of the time (ex: stay at home Mom
or Dad, work at home, retired or work opposite shifts, etc). We will need more time to evaluate Scooby further to find
out what else he needs for his new home.
