11/17/05 Well, we had good news and bad news at the vet on Monday. The good news is that my vet detected no
sign of any heart condition - no arrythmia at all, or any other reason to think he has a heart problem of any kind. The
vet said that arrythmias can come an go, even in people for example, sometimes people who drink a lot of caffeine
will have arrythmia and then it goes awy when they're not full of caffeine or not stressed. The bad news is that
Samson has a mass inside his abdomen, probably near the spleen or liver. We don't know if it's growing quickly or
slowly, or if it's attached to his liver or spleen. At this point, we're going to have some bloodwork done to see if his
liver is functioning normally, and will consider other options as time goes on. There is no pain associated with it
and the vets were able to feel around it and let me feel it and it caused him no discomfort at all, and there doesn't
seem to be fluid around it or anything like that. Since rescue really can't afford an MRI or CAT scan at this point,
we're going to try to figure out some of the details in a more old fashioned way. It's entirely possible he has had
this for a long time, and that it may not affect his well being or longevity at all. The reality is that we never know what
tomorrow will bring with any dog of any age, so every day is a good day!
Samson was just a big sweet gentleman at the vets and let us do anything we had to do. His figure is getting
better all the time and he defiitely has a waistline! He loves playing with his new foster brother Champ. Sometimes
he's ot sure how to play but he's figuring it out and it's really cute. He's also careful to keep his play on the carpet
where he won't slip. He is very affectionate and loves to "press" and give little kisses. He's really a big sweetheart
who only needs a one-story home, plenty of leaisurely walks, and some loving companionship, and hopefully
another dog to keep him on his toes.
11/13/05 - Samson is doing great. He's lost quite a bit of weight and is definitely more energetic. He's happy,
friendly and very easy going. He enjoys our walks and is even starting to get in on some if the play between my
younger, wilder boys, but he's not sure what to do. Today, a new foster came in who is Samson's age, and they
immediately got along just great and Samson played with him quite a bit and was really having a good time. I've
never seen him happier or more excited!! He is such a big cutie. He jumped around a little in true boxer style, while
still being a bit cautious about being knocked down. He does best on the rug - I think his paws are very smooth
and with all of his weight on a slippery floor, especially if he's moving fast or coming down the stairs, he has
slipped a couple of times. Now that he has trimmed down, it's much easier for him to get back up. He'll be going to
visit my vet the 14th for a check up. His old vet records say that he has some kind of heart condition, so I'll get my
vet's opinion on how serious he thinks it might be or if it's the kind of thing that many of us (dogs and humans) live
with.
10/21/05 - Samson arrived at the Chadwick Bay Boxer Retreat yesterday and is a real doll. He's a very big boy - a
head taller than my very average-build boxers, and quite overweight, but a handsome, gentle giant. His owner has
had since he was a puppy, but dramatic changes in his lifestyle have forced him to leave Samson at home alone a
lot, so he very sadly decided to do what is best for Samson so that he can fins a home with the loving attention he
needs and craves.
His owner said he has never been crated and doesn't get into any trouble. From what I have seen so far, I have no
reason to question this. He is curious and likes to explore and sniff, but doesn't seem interested in anything
inappropriate. He is very alert and interested in everything, and has very little grey on his muzzle - no more than my
five year old. He is a very good looking boy and has a nice thick, soft coat. He is completely up to date on his shots
(3 year rabies) and has been very well cared for all his life. I'll be taking him to my vet just for a once over - he was
diagnosed with a heart beat irregularity, but this is very common in dogs and people, too (like me) so unless it's
severe, this should be anything that will affect his life in any way, as long as his weight is kept under control and
exercise is a regular activity for him. He had an ECG done in 2003 that said no thoracic enlargement was shown.
He'll also be checked for heartworms and lyme disease.
One big surprise Samson doesn't know about yet is that he just entered weight camp. Samson definitely needs to
lose some weight - he has some trouble getting up and sitting down. He may have an underlying issue in his hind
quarters like many dogs do, but losing a good deal of weight will likely improve this issue, so I'm not going to place
too much importance in that until he lightens the load a bit. Exercise will be very important for Samson to keep him
fit. He loves going for walks and was raised in the country. He would probably do well in any neighborhood, and I
am willing to bet he'd be the right kind of dog to walk along with the stroller when walking the kids, or for anyone
who would love the ease of adopting a sweet boy who is easy to walk and very obedient and well trained. He's
calm without being a slug, and I am sure his energy levels will improve as he trims into a more appropriate size,
although "big" will always be his middle name!! He's a real charmer, loves to play with toys, snuggle and give
kisses.
He likes other dogs, but if another dog starts with him, he won't back down without correction, but I did not have any
difficulty putting an end to the little squabble Clyde started with him. He's an easy going, friendly fella who is happy
to be in the company of people and dogs alike. He has great manners, is very well trained and affectionate. He
would make a great and loving companion in any home, except maybe a 2nd floor apartment or other place with
lots of stairs. He is a real winner. Who will be the lucky family to have such a great boy come into their lives and
bring them lots of happiness, love and laughs?
