In April of 2005, my husband and i adopted Ridley from the second chance boxer rescue. He turned out to be the most wonderful dog...smart!!! handsome!!! always getting special attention due to his good looks. personality. loving. in November of this year, poor Ridley with diagnosed thru an MRI with a large, inoperable brain tumor. BeforeChristmas, it was apparent that the poor guy could take no more. He fought a tough battle. He was a very dominant dog and i know that he did not want to give up. We finally had to put him to sleep. It was his time. To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement. We loved that boy so much and know that he loved us equally as much in return. I went on to your section of adopted dogs and saw his profile. I hope that you don;t have to remove it. It gave me a lot of comfort to see his pictures and profile. we are both so sorry to see him go. the saving grace to all of this is that Ridley had the very best home that he probably every had before with lots of love. We are truly glad that this boy was a part of our life. I am sorry to have to report this to you. UPDATE 6/24/05 - it is hard to believe that ridley is in his new home for two months today..actually, it seems like he has always been here. he has adjusted quite nicely from day one. he loves going in the back yard just to hang out or run and run. right now, ridley is attending obedience classes. he is doing well and probably has another two weeks or so until he graduates. he is very popular with the on-lookers at the training class. it seems that everyone gravitates over to say hello to ridley...i really can't blame them...he is very handsome! he has recently been to the vet to get his shots and booster shots. he had developed some cysts between his toes for which the vet prescribed an antibiotic which cleared it right up. we have taken him on several walks to a local nature park in which dogs are allowed as long as the are leashed. it is a very popular for people to bring their dogs. ridley does quite well on the leash, walking alongside; however, we do know that he has some 'issues' when it comes to other dogs. we are prepared for that situation and it has not been a problem. with the walks in the park and the obedience training, hopefully ridley will become accustomed to being around other dogs without making a fuss. so far at the training classes, this has not presented a problem. we have found ridleyto be rather stubborn (as boxers can be) and it seems like he wants it his way and that's it....we have no problem dealing with this...just being firm and he cannot have his way!! we are really loving ridley and are very happy that he is a part of the family. we recently has a few friends over for a bbq and he, of course, was with us in the backyard. like most mischievious children, he found a wicker coaster and proceeded to run around the yard, a hundred miles an hour, with the coaster in his mouth daring us to catch him. we all had a good laugh. UPDATE 5/24/05 - well, our journey to pick up ridley began on a rainy day, leaving long island to our meeting place just outside of maine. thank you julie for meeting us part way. it really saved us some time and we do appreciate it. julie pulled up in her car with ridley in tow...he was looking just beautiful! our granddaughter, christina, took the trip with us, so we have named her ridley's official 'godmother'. it was if we were meant for each other. ridley took immediately to us and we to him. we started our ride back home..ridley was a bit excited for the first minutes but eventually calmed down and enjoyed the ride (although, he slept most of the time). ridley is a very, very nice guy. he is affectionate, loving and smart. he has adjusted very nicely in a short time and has established a routine. he has gone for a few car rides, made a visit to 'grandma', went to the park a few times...he is having a nice time...and if attention is what he craves, it is what he gets. he loves the backyard and especially loves to chase his ball..he's very quick and agile on his feet. he will be starting his obedience classes soon. since he does not like other dogs (or cats), this will be a challange to work on....i think it can be done! i will keep you informed. 4/24/05 - Ridley's new family came to get him today! He was happy as could be & so were his new Mom & Dad! 4/14/05 - Ridley has joined the Boxer Oasis so we could see how he would do in different situations. He is such a sweet & gorgeous boy that I don't know why he is still waiting for his new home! Ridley did great a few times we have gone for rides & he loved looking out the window. He waited patiently for me in the car as we spent a few hours doing errands together & he was very happy to see me each time I got back (would have thought those 5-10 minute stops were hours!-LOL). We went to one of my friends' houses last night for visiting & boy was Ridley a happy boy! He LOVED her 10 & 11 year old daughters & was so excited to play with them! Ridley has an obsession about giving kisses & the girls thought that was too funny. They would scream & giggle & laugh & try to hide their faces from his kisses & Ridley thought it was the best game! He would lick the nearest toes or leg which would get the kids to move the pillows they were hiding behind, which then gave Ridley free range for kissing their faces! You could see Ridley smiling from ear to ear as the game went on! He found a bone hiding under their couch from their dog & decided it was time to chew on that for awhile. He had no issues with any of us near him while he chomped away on his new found treat. Ridley is an active boy who would do great in a home where he got some excercise. He would love a fenced yard or long cable run to play on & would make a perfect jogging partner! Ridley may not be your dog park or big city type dog since he doesn't like to share with cats or dogs, but he would be wonderful just about anywhere else. Some obedience work with this guy & you will have an even more wonderful companion. He has no issues with kids or people & loves everyone he meets. Get those apps in now for Ridley! 2/20/05 - Well, Ridley is still here at the Upperfield...he remains just as playful and loving as ever....with humans! The only difference now is that Ridley has to spend so much time crated here, because he doesn't get along with the other dogs, that he has started to prefer to be in his crate...we bring him out to play and he just wants to go back into the crate....of course the cold weather hasn't helped. He doesn't like the cold at all and needs to be coaxed and pushed out the door....the minute the cold air hits him...he comes to a screeching stop as if to say"what, are you nuts? It's freezing out there!!!" Ridley would really benefit from having a home and family of his own...he needs a family that will understand that he has a hard time resisting those urges to just run around the house and fling all his toys around. Like the proverbial "bull in a china shop" he is kind of a klutzy boy......Ridley's latest talent is the Opera, he puts the Three Tenors to shame. I think my Rocketman has been giving him private lessons..together they make the most interesting music while they are waiting their turn to eat.Ridley is looking to be an only pet , as he needs a great deal of attention....he is so willing to learn.. all he needs is a chance to prove himself!!! If you have the time & love, Ridley will return your affections a thousand fold!! He is actually one of the most intelligent boxers that I have had the pleasure of meeting!!! He just needs that chance to strut his stuff and this boy can strut!!! 1/13/05 - Just a quick note to say that Ridley is still here....He is doing just fine... however, he really needs to be in his forever home.... Ridley is on the lookout for a home where he can shine and strut his stuff...He is super intelligent.... super sweet... loves kids( is a bit overwhelming for the little ones though) loves adults, car rides, long walks. Ridley wants the kind of home that will be understanding of this sweet, smart boxer boy.....We don't know anything about his past. We can guess that not a lot of attention was paid to him...he thrives on attention, however, doesn't know how to act when he gets it. He loves squeaky toys and jolly balls and wants a human that will play with him. He does not want to share that attention with other animals. Probably because he hasn't ever been exposed to them in a social setting. I have tried to de-sensitize him by putting his crate between two of my own boys. He is okay now with them as long as they are crated and will even wag his tail and act like he wants to make nice.... However, when exposed to these same dogs without the security of the crate walls he gets insecure and acts out.....I honestly believe that he just doesn't know what to do....and always manages to offend them in some way...My boys are no pushovers and stand up for themselves when he cuffs them up side the head...which is all it takes for poor Ridley, but he is just the sweetest boy imaginable when he is with people....likes to lean on you and give big kisses!!!! 11/1/04 - Ridley is still waiting for his forever home...if you have no other pets, love to be loved, and enjoy a challenge, this is your guy!!! He's handsome and smart and a bit rowdy.....If you are in the market for a highly intelligent, highly trainable boxer boy....get your application in now!!! 10/9/04 - Ridley is continuing to do well here in his foster home, however, he really needs a home of his own...preferably a home that is already experienced with intelligent, stubborn, boxer boys...Ridley's biggest fault is that he is almost too smart for his own good, however his intelligence is also one of his best traits. So, this handsome boy is not for the "faint of heart"...Ridley needs a home where his family will make sure that he minds his p's & q's. He has a great personality with all humans and greets everyone that comes to our home with huge doses of affection. He still has a tendency to bowl over small children, although he is learning the meaning of the word "no"! He no longer jumps on adults, although you can tell that he wants to, . A home with no other pets and no small children is required. Ridley has learned to play with rope toys and the jolly ball and will play as long as you let him....He is very affectionate and still gives those big sloppy kisses whenever he gets close enough to lay one on ya! Ridley's new family will need to be firm and use positive reinforcement type obedience training...cos' this big boy has got the brains to be the boss if you let him...but what he really wants is for you to be the boss! With the right kind of training and loving security this boy will make you proud!!! Is anyone out there up to a challenge? The rewards will be unending, because Ridley is so full of love and affection that he will be your very best forever friend 8/26/04 Ridley is still waiting for his forever family to find him....he is a big goofy boy full of love and kisses...He will not be able to be placed with a family that has other animals...he has not been socialized when he was a pup and doesn't like to have to share...With humans Ridley is just one big overgrown puppy...he absolutely loves everyone he meets....He is a bit large and still unruly enough so that small children would get knocked down while he tries ti kiss them....His morning rountine has to include being allowed to kiss his humans..and sneak attacks on bare legs are not unusual....he just loves to kiss the backs of my legs and almost seems to be laughing at me when I shriek....It's a very large cold wet nose and tongue.......Please apply for this boy only if you will be able to devote time and love and discipline, cause he's a smartie pants and will try to avoid the rules and regulations if you let him get away with it....He needs to be taught how to behave and is very willing to learn!!! Ridley is sweet and has a great personality and will be worth any amount of time invested in his training...... 8/3/04- Ridley's manners are improving a bit, he has learned to sit and wait for his leash to be put on and for his supper to be served. He is trying very hard to behave while on the leash, sometimes he forgets to walk nicely at our sides and has to be reigned in. We tried a gentle leader and Ridley howled and protested, I checked the fit and adjusted it and he howled some more....and kept it up for about half an hour....so, we removed it, waited for our ears to stop ringing and have used the nylon training collar since!...We are nearly ready to try him with other dogs again. On leash of course!!! Ridley will need a strong willed person to guide him, as he is quite strong willed himself !....He will be a challenge and it will be worth it!!! He is a beautiful boy, who did not have the advantages of early socialization or training...in fact, it's almost as if he was ignored for his first 2 years and is so hungry for human interaction that he just gets so very excited that he can't help but get a little crazy... His favorite habit is kissing when you least expect it...big kisses on the backs of your bare legs...big kisses on your chin or your arms...he just plain can't help himself he is so overjoyed to be here... Ridley has now accepted that he has to be crated while we work and is going into his crate willingly. And is being rewarded greatly, so as you can see, he is a smart boy. Crate = liver treat, sit = yummy food bowl, walking nicely = praises hows that for a doggy mathmagician ? Can you tell that he is fast becoming a favorite here? He is full of personality! 7/29/04- Ridley has been at the vet's and is now neutered and UTD on vaccines. Negative to Heartworm & Lyme. Ridley was also discovered to have a broken jaw, which according to the vet is healing nicely and all we can do is keep an eye on it. We had asked the Vet to check his teeth which looked kinda crooked and as if some were missing. Well some are missing...we will never know how this poor guy was injured. He also has had a small cyst removed from his left thigh...He is being quite quiet at the moment...still a bit sore ... We have discovered that Ridley will not be very good with other dogs and will likely need to be an only dog. We attempted an introduction to Brody, our gentleman boxer, and it wasn't pretty, Ridley was not very receptive at all,...Brody, who can tolerate just about any dog, tried to put this youngster in his place. However, Ridley ,being very strong, came back and was the victor.....so needless to say we will not attempt any more introductions at this point. Maybe after he settles in a bit more and relaxes we will try again...The great thing is that he is wonderful with humans, however, needs to learn some manners...we are working on this very diligently...And I will be updating everyone on how this goes! 7/26/04 - We here at the Upperfield welcome Ridley, who came to us from New York! I hear he rode in a limo driven by one of our favorite volunteers! ...Ridley is an xtra large boxer boy , we are guessing his age to be two years old...he is ever so very handsome! We are getting to know him and will have much more to say later...meanwhile Ridley will be going to one of our favorite vets to be neutered on Wednesday and will also have a small lump removed from his thigh. He will be brought up to date on his shots and tested for heartworm & lyme. I have already found him to be far too rough for small children....My poor 3 year old son has been knocked down several times...all Ridley wants to do is kiss him, however, it is a bit daunting to have 80 lbs of boxer jump up on a 36 lb boy...Ridley appears to have had no obedience training and I would have to say that I don't think he's been leash walked much either! More to come on this good natured overgrown galloot! |
