Boxer Lab Mix

04/02/05 - Freddie has quickly become a welcomed member of our family. He loves playing with our
children (8 & 5) and can never get enough walks or playtime in the backyard. He especially loves torace
around our property, approximately 1 acre and go into our woods and seek out large fallen branches that
he proceeds to toss and carry from end to end of the property. He has been very receptive to training
(Bark Busters) and learns quickly - in just under a month, his evaluation score went from a D+ to a B-.
The only issue we are having with Freddie is that he still gets separation anxiety everytime we leave the
house. We are continually working on it and have seen some slight progress over the last several weeks.

01/09/05 I wouldn't normally do an update again so soon, but I took Freddie to a BRAD today  and let
me tell you - he was an angel and stole so many hearts! He loved everyone he met (except a JRT mix
who was barking at him and he barked right back) including other dogs, kids, men, women, and people
of all ages. He had a kiss for every child who came up to him. He was affectionate, well mannered
(considering all the excitement) and gave out lots of kisses.People were immediately drawn to him, with
his good looks, happy face and friendly disposition. You couldn't ask for a nicer fellow. Everyone was so
impressed with how handsome, soft and sweet he is, and a few people fell in love, so get your app in
quick - his forver home is going to find him soon!

01/06/05 Freddie is ready!! He had his neuter, vaccines, and negative heartworm test today, and he is
doing great, although groggy and kind of out of it, and I've noticed a bit stingy with his kisses today! He
was very well behaved in the vet's office (much better than my 7 year old boxer gal!) and was very
friendly and easy to control. He loved riding in the Jeep on the way there - too bad he was passed out the
whole ride home!

Freddie is the All-American Dog people dream and write stories about. He's loyal, friendly, mostly
gentle, affectionate and playful, and all of that in such a young pup! So now he is just resting from his
surgery and getting ready for his forever home. He would easily fit into many different lifestyles, as long as
he gets a little romp time and lots of affection and closeness. He doesn't needed to be petted every
minute, but likes to be near his people as much as possible. He is such a wonderful companion. And he
LOVES snow!!! He likes to romp in it - he does this adorable hop-run thin which is so cute - and he
likes to burrow his nose into it, likes chasing snowballs and eats the snow, too! I love when he looks up
at me with a snow covered muzzle. He couldn't be happier than when he is running around in the yard
with snow and another dog to chase. He would probably love playing out in the snow with kids, too. He's
not overly atheletic (although he will be very muscular and "cut" when mature) but does like to romp
around a bit and play. He never gets out of hand, and never leaves my sight in the yard, even when he
wants to cut loose and run in big circles. You just couldn't ask for a happier or sweeter handsome boy,
and soooo soft and plushy!!!

Now that he is settling in and getting comfortable, I've found that the only trouble he manages to find is
typical puppy stuff - he likes to chew. Sometimes it's my hand, sometimes it's my favorite shoe,
sometimes it's a boot he pulls out of someone's closet. The good news: he lets me take the stuff away
without a fuss and if I give him another toy, it usually will keep him occupied for a little while. The better
news is that he should likely grow out of this pretty soon, too. The *best* news is that is about his only
issue. He's only had a few accidents in the house, and he is really getting it, but his body and bladder and
all aren't quite full grown yet. Almost! I also found out that he was extremely calm with my two rabbits
out in the room where he could see them while I cleaned their aquarium. He was interested but only a
little, and stayed calm about the whole thing. He's very gentle, mellow and obedient and a real charmer!
Don't hesitate on this guy - he won't be around long!

12/30/04 Freddie is settling in very well. He is mostly good around the house, but you know he is a
puppy so he does give me opportunites to pull things out of his mouth that don't belong there. He lets me
have the item usually without a fuss and I just give him an appropriate toy and he's content with that. He is
a very obedient, gentle and curious, and basically, a big lump of sugar!

He loves every kind of toy - stuffed, rubber, balls, you name it, but especially the fleecy squeaky ones!
He also likes tug of war and playing in the snow or a friendly game of tag with my boxer. While he is
playful, he's also content to lay around and snuggle and gaze up at you with happy loving eyes. He is so
incredibly soft and fluffy that petting and hugging him is irresistable. He's just an all around sweet and
highly trainable dog. He has a lot of training already - it is quite clear that Freddie has never been allowed
on furniture, because he absolutely will not under any circumstances attempt to get on any couch or chair.
He is not even jealous when my (spoiled) dogs are in a chair with me. Only twice I've seen him get really
happy and kind of gently jump into someone's lap when they're siting, but doesn't try to climb up. He is
just a smiley, mellow, happy sweetie.

I have only had him in the crate once and he was very tolerant of it. He only whined a few times when he
could hear my brother and I talking for a while.I don't know if he is ever been in one or not, but he went
in with some biscuits and a shove and did just fine. The only slight issue he had was when my female
Babboo walked up to the crate and he really snarled at her. That is the only time I have seen him actually
sound defensive. He probably felt vulnerable. He does fine with other dogs, but I don't know if putting
him with a dominant dog would work out too well. See, Mr. Freddie like to grab a toy from the other
dogs and go lay down and chew on it... by himself. He usually gives a low growl when he thinks my dogs
want the toy, and they back off. It's hard to say how he would react if a dog actually tried to take the toy.

He only has a few puppy traits that need correcting - the begging I mentioned ealier, he likes to chew on
my hand when riled up and nip at my pant legs and sleeves, and doesn't stop immediately when I tell him
"No" like he does with other commands. Usually sticking a toy in his mouth gets him off the hand or
sleeve and he'll play with that. He thinks anything on the floor is a toy, so he still needs close supervision
and some "puppy proofing", but he's remarkably easy. The only time he really lost his manners was when
my birds started squawking, and he decided it was ok to jump up and lean on their cage and check things
out, and didn't respond to my commands when he was engrossed with the whole thing but hasn't tried
that again... we'll wait and see how he acts next time they start their squawking routine. If you have birds,
I would not allow him near them without supervision.

He is scheduled for his neuter on the 6th and will be aready to go! He is a really wonderful, good boy,
and it's amazing how much he knows and how obedient he is at such a young age. I am convinced this
boy could learn to do just about anything, but most of all, he already knows how to bring love and
happiness to the people around him. He's a pleasure to have around, and we just can't help but look at
him and smile. Give yourself a happy New Year and more to come with this big lovable teddy bear!

12/26/04 Reddie Freddie arrived here all the way from a high-kill shelter in rural Indiana. He was pulled
from the shelter by a very kind lady who knew he would be put to sleep on 12/24 if she didn't do
something. At the sheler they called him Red, but since that used to be my nickname for 8 years, I had to
change it, and he's already responding to Fred. He  came on a very long transport with several other dogs
bound for different homes. The first thing that I noticed was that is is NOT a pure boxer, but wow, is he
cute! My best guess is that he has one pure boxer parent and possibly a black or chocolate lab as the
other, and how can you go wrong with a combination like that? He is a very sweet, loving boy. He is
large for such a young boy (and will continue to grow at a slow rate for up to 6 months), but is
surprisingly calm. So far, he seems like a very, very sweet boy with some training and is eager to please.
He isn't rowdy at all and was very cautious about meeting the other dogs and sniffing around the house.

Since he was smelling shelter-fresh, I figured a bath was on the night's agenda. He wasn't crazy about it,
but very tolerant. A few times he tried to turn around toward the exit slot (I have glass sliding shower
doors) but all I had to do is say no and gently turn him and he wouldn't try again right away. He initially
needed to sniff every inch of the floor but anytime I sternly told him "no" or "get away from there" (like
when sniffing the trash) he immediately stopped what he was doing and came up and sat in front of me.
He knows "sit" and it only takes telling him once, I am told he is housebroken (he did have one accident
when he first got here but that is pretty normal for a new arrival and he wouldn't go when we were
outside) and I would guess this guy could probably be taught to do just about anything. He seems to want
to please and already has some basic understanding of good doggie etiquette, and considering how much
stress he has been under in the past few weeks - in a cold shelter, to a house for a few days, then from
car to car to car, then here with strangers in a bathtub and some smelly soap! He was very obedient and
patient with me, and as stinky as he was, this wasn't a quick in and out job!.

He's already done some silly things that made us laugh, so he isn't short on the boxer clown gene When
he first came in, he jumped straight into my mother's lap! His coat is super plushy silky S-O-F-T and he
gives nice quick kisses that aren't wet or sloppy. His tail doesn't seem at all to be a lethal weapon - he
seems kind of gentle with it. He has jumped on me a few times, but very, very gently and not at all rough.
This is great for a puppy. He is a little rough with talking treats and likes to chew on my hands every now
and then and that needs to be discouraged, but is typical puppy stuff. The only main thing he needs to
learn is something I noticed when I made myself something to eat... when I was in the kitchen, he seemed
to think that everything I had in my hand or touched was a treat I was going to give to him.He sat like a
good boy and stared relentlessly at my hands, any bowl or pan I was using etc. This is begging and as
long as you are consistent, it's easy to stop. I am guessing he lived with someone who threw him tidbits
while s/he cooked. Breaking him of this should be easy with some patience and consistency since he
really seems to want to be a good boy and please.

His rich, thick red coat is short like a boxer's but fluffy thick and soft and has boxer-like markings,
although his nose is a bit straighter and his feet are flatter and wider. He has the typical boxer underbite,
although he seems to be fussy about letting me look at his mouth or ears so I can't tell you much about
that. He is just beautiful and snuggly and if you're willing to consider an "almost boxer" then he could be
the guy for you. If you love Labs but would like less hair to deal with or can't decide between a boxer
and a Lab, then he is your perfect choice, especially if you or family members like to be outdoors in the
winter! He needs to be neutered and doesn't appear to have any health issues beside being short a few
pounds, so he'll be ready to shower his forever home with love and kisses in no time. More as we get to
know him.
