UPDATE 6/26/06 - It's time for Rascal's 6 month update, and he's doing great! The little
guy is filling out nicely. He may not be very big, but he certainly is
solid and very muscular.
We are currently enrolled in Level II obedience class and having lots
of fun. He's come a long way since the first day of Level I. His leash
manners are pretty good when we use an Easy Walk harness, so it's really
easy for him to go places with us and see new things. He's going to the
Maine coast with us later this summer on a mini-vacation. We're very
excited about that.
He and I did a BRAD in Middlebury back in March, and he was a very good
ambassador for SCBR. He is definitely a charmer.
He goes to doggie-daycare once a week and loves that! He's a very
social dog.
Overall, he's just fantastic. It's hard to believe that 6 months have
gone by already. We are very lucky to have him.
UPDATE 3/7/06 - It's time for Rascal's three month
update. The little guy is doing really great...actually he's not so
little anymore. At his last vet visit, he weighed in at 48 pounds! I
daresay he might even be getting a belly! His scraping also showed
negative for mites (yay!).
He's graduating form basic obedience this week. He's made a lot if
progress in this area. He knows all the basics - sit, down, stay, wait,
come (sometimes). We're also working on some tricks - shake, sit pretty,
etc. He's a really smart little guy. Walking on a loose leash is still a
bit of a challenge when we're out in public. He's just very social and
wants to check out everybody and everything. Our trainer suggested
trying an Easy Walk harness and that has worked out very well for him.
We had a nice visit with Jessie and Brody at the BRAD in Burlington in
February.
Rascal's energy level is going through the roof! I'm glad Spring is
coming so we can get him out on some walks and hikes and burn some of
that wild puppy energy off. ;-) Our trainer also recommended checking
out a doggie daycare for him once every couple of weeks so he can romp
around with other dogs. There is a fairly new one that's opened near my
office that we're looking into.
Overall, Rascal is really doing fantastic. I know I've mentioned this
before, but it feels like he's been with us forever.
UPDATE 1/31/06 - Rascal is doing great! He is such a
happy little guy and a joy to have around. We're on week #3 of our basic
obedience class and he's picking up things very quickly. So far, he has
sit, down, and shake hands down pat. Walking on a loose leash still
needs work, but we'll all keep at it.
He's put on a lot of good weight and has filled out very nicely. We did
notice him losing a little hair on his head again about a week after his
neuter. Our vet found a couple of dead mites in his scraping, so we have
him back on Ivermectin for another month or two.
He's getting along very well with our cat, Chance. They seem to have a
morning ritual going:
1. Everybody wakes up
2. Rascal chases Chance into the kitchen - Chance can use the exercise ;)
3. Jay feeds Chance, then feeds Rascal.
4. Rascal waits patiently in the living room for Chance to leave his
bowl so he can check for leftovers.
Jay and I have been taking him with us to as many places as possible.
He does really well with meeting new people, young and old. He spends
most of the work day with my mother-in-law and has developed quite a fan
club among her friends that come to visit her.
All in all, everything is just terrific. I'll post some new pics of him
to the list soon.
UPDATE 1/1/06 - Well, what can we say about Rastus - it feels like he's been with us forever. He's a real treasure
and charms everyone he meets.
We did modify his name to Rascal, which he immediately responded to.
He just had another follow-up visit with our vet to scrape him for mites and check his weight. In this scraping, she
saw no mites, and his weight is up to 36 lbs. Our vet felt we could discontinue the Ivermectin and that he could be
neutered. He has an appointment for that on 1/4/06.
Overall, he's really looking great! He's put on a lot of good weight and the hair has grown back nicely on the bald
patches on his head. Jay and I have also noticed a marked increase in his energy level during the last couple of
weeks. He's playing longer and harder.
He's a very social little guy and seems to like everyone he meets. He has a terrific temperament. He wants to play
with every dog he meets, but the feelin hasn't always mutual. We've gotten him together with some friends who
have nice, even-tempered dogs and they've helped with his dog-dog manners. He and our cat, Chance, are getting
along fine. Rascal is learning what Chance's limits are with regard to play, and I've noticed Chance on a couple of
occasions trying to goad Rascal into chasing him.
Rascal is doing great with house training. He had a few accidents at first, but we can now confidently go 3-4 hours
between potty breaks during the day, and he will hold it all night.
Rascal loves to play, but he also loves to curl up and snuggle on the couch. He's an amazing dog and we are so
happy that he's ours!!
12/3/05 - Rastus has been adopted!
11/22/05 - Rastus is a beautiful 5 month old puppy that was purchased at a pet store and surrendered because of
medical problems. He needs to be evaluated to see exactly what is going on with him but it is clear he is small for
his age and has an eye infection. He does however have plenty of energy! He loves to run and play and when he
jumps it looks like he has springs on his feet. It is 8:30 at night and Rastus has run out of energy and is sound
asleep in my lap. This boy may be small but he snores like a big boy! Hopefully Rastus will soon have a clean bill
of health and be ready for his forever home.
