1/18/06 - Nike is a wonderful little cocker spaniel who came form the Newark, NJ shelter where he had been
waiting for a home for six months. When I first brought him home and opened his crate I had no idea what to
expect. Sometimes the dogs are scared or defensive at first but what came out of the crate that night was the
happiest little dog I have ever seen. He was almost black with dirt and his fur was so long and matted he could
barely move but he didn't care. He just wanted to be petted and play with all the dog toys in the house. Nike is
wonderful in every way and would probably have been adopted from the shelter right away except for the fact that
he has dry eye. This is a condition that is very common in cocker spaniels and needs to be treated with drops daily
for the rest of his life. On top of that the poor little guy cannot see very well. The vet said that he sees about as well
as a person that is wearing very dark sunglasses in the house. That is why I don't think he would do well with very
young children but it doesn't slow him down at all. Sometimes he misplaces his favorite ball and needs someone
to help him find it, but so far that is the only problem he seems to have. I know there is a wonderful family out there
just waiting to give Nike all the love he deserves.
