UPDATE 3/26/05 - Well, I thought it's about time for an update.  Monson is getting along
wonderfully with all 3 cats, he washes/kisses them regularly.  He sleeps through the night and
does not wake us up to go pee.  He does, however, "leak" urine in his sleep most nights, but that
is due to his age.  He has been really loving the snow.  He loves to eat it!  He loves visits to
grandma's house (my mom's).  We will be going to Maine in April for a mini-family reunion and
will be bringing him.  He is an excellent traveler and loves to ride in the car.  My family will love
him!  He is a great dog - the perfect dog - except for his health issues.  He is bordering on
suffering now.  I have spoken to his previous vet's office and when he was in his previous home
they tried to make him better for 10 months and finally felt things were not getting better so they
returned him to SCBR.  Monson has the same symptoms that he had with the previous family,
and they appear to be getting worse not better.  We have tried countless foods, meds, removing
all treats, severely limiting his diet...putting him on prescription food, etc.  He suffers about every
other day with debilatating stomach cramps.  His insides make very very loud noises.  He won't
eat or drink.  He crouches in a corner looking very sad and in pain.  Every few days he will have
a really good day and will play, eat and drink normal, and seem perfectly happy.  However, as
our vet pointed out, and as the previous vet did too, we have to start weighing the good and bad
days, and once he has more bad days than good, we have to weigh his quality of life.  At this
point, the bad days seem to outweigh the good ones.  We are going to be starting another new
food this week, so we'll see if that helps.  We have spent SO much money on vet visits, new
foods, medications, etc...and a lot of time.  We have also invested a lot of love in this old
guy...and we love him like we've had him for years.  He is definitely the apple of my husband's
eye, and the joy of my life.  We love him, spoil him, make him as comfortable as possible, but we
do feel we will all reach a point that nothing more can be done for him.  Also, the lump in his
throat is huge, and it's just too costly and in a precarious location to have removed.  We are doing
the best we can to make this sick boy as happy and comfortable as possible.  I should mention
that when I spoke to the previous vet, they were extremely surprised Monson was even adopted
out again.  He was adopted to us at "7 years old", and was adopted to the previous family at "6
years old".  However 3 vets agree that Monson is closer to 10, than 6 or 7.  He is a very old guy
with a lot of health issues.  I will keep you updated periodically on his health.

UPDATE 1/30/05 - Hi Everyone,  Just wanted to give an update on Monson.  He is settling in so
nicely.  His stools are finally under control on the Venison and Rice formula.  No more pudding
poops...lol. Anyway, a few days ago I noticed that his gums near one of his large canine teeth on
the bottom jaw was all swollen and a little bloody.  He had been chewing on a bone that day so
we thought he scraped the gum with the bone.  We took the bone away and hoped after a couple
of days it would get better.  Two days later his gum was even more swollen and was starting to
grow up and cover the large canine tooth.  We tried opening up his mouth to get a really close
look and in the process my husband lightly touched the tooth and he yelped in pain and the tooth
bent backwards, towards his throat.  We called the vet immediately and described everything,
brought him in for a quick check, and discovered he has broken the large tooth below the
gumline.  This is a very long tooth, the canines are almost as long as a pinky because they go deep
down into the gum and up to the jaw bone.  He is going to have surgery Tuesday to remove the
entire tooth and get stiched up.  At the same time they will give him a dental.  He is eating fine
right now, but won't chew (obviously) on his favorite soft hedge hog toy and we don't try to force
the antibiotics down his throat in case we hit the tooth by accident.  Right now I just wrap it in a
piece of bread and he is eating the medicine that way.  Poor Monson.  No more bones for him.
They usually don't break by gnawing on a bone, but this tooth did have a piece of it missing on the
tip, so it may have been "traumatized" previously, and chewing on the bone just broke it.  Wish us
luck with surgery.  I hate to leave him there...I am already feeling guilty.  Oh, and he hasn't been
barking at all anymore.  Just a few minutes of whining.

1/16/05 - Monson has been adopted!

01/03/05 Monson had an exciting holiday season.  He went away on 'vacation' to rural Maine for
a
few days over Christmas with Tika.  They seemed to have a good time, and their hosts reported
that they were both very well behaved and were both real sweeties.  He returned to the
Riverview on Wednesday, and was definitely happy to be back home. Sunday we hosted an
after-Christmas party.  We had guests ranging in age from 18 months to 97 years!  And Monson
was wonderful with everyone.  His manners were great--no jumping, or begging.  And certainly
no food steeling!  He definitely enjoyed having all those extra people around so that lots of petting
could come his way. He is just such a great guy, and he would be such a wonderful addition to
any home that was willing to look past his age and give him the chance that he so much
deserves--to have his own loving forever home.

12/20/04 Monson continues to be the perfect guest at the Riverview.  He enchants everyone he
meets with his gentle, happy personality and good manners.  Monson had an exciting day on
Friday--one section of fencing in my back yard collapsed.  And the door from the kitchen to the
porch was left ajar.  So Monson decided to take advantage of the fine weather and sunshine and
do some unsupervised sight-seeing in Kennebunk.  Perhaps he was admiring the Christmas
decorations on the historic houses?  At any rate, he was seen wandering and was brought to the
nearest vet (he wasn't hurt) where they know I do Boxer Rescue.  So I got a phone call that he
was entertaining the girls at the office, and being entertained by them until I could get home and
pick him up!  They thought he was wonderful, and could't beleive it when I said that he was a
return to Rescue!  They sent him home with some toys
for his foster brother and sister, and said that they will come visit all of us on January 2nd when
the Riverview hosts its after-Christmas party.  I am sure that ALL of the Boxers will love to see
these Boxer-lovers!

12/14/04 Monson is doing wonderfully here at the Boxer-hostel.  He does need some TLC
becaue he has trouble holding his urine more than 5 or 6 hours at a time, but our schedule here
accomodates for that.  Monson is a happy couch potato of a fellow.  He  loves lying at my feet
when I am in the living room or dining room.  HE so appreciates a little love and attention.  When
he moans in extasy when I rub his ears just right, I wish I was as easy to please!  And he
impresses me again and again with his wonderful manners.  This is not a boy who begs at the
table (unlike someone else I know...)  Nor is he a counter surfer--or a trash hound. Monson
loves the nice soft doggie beds we have here, and doesn't try to climb on people or furniture.  He
dosn't pull on the leash when we walk, and he gets SO excited when it is his turn for a walk! He
is eating nicely.  He could put on a couple of pounds, so I may decide to start mixing in some
canned dog food with his dry kibble.

12/10/04 Our wonderful Monson man has returned to the Riverview Boxer-hostel.  He walked in
like he had never left, and greeted Rocky and Tika with his famous nub-wiggle.  He greeted me
with his famous big wet Boxer tongue bath!  He's doing great--peeing and pooping in the right
spots, and chasing around the fenced in back yard with Tika.  More news to follow soon.

5/1/04 - Monson was adopted!

4/29/04 - Monson came through his neuter just fine and already tested negative for heartworm!!!!
He is now UTD and ready for his adoption on Saturday.

4/13/04 Monson's month of inactivity while his heartworm treatment takes effect is over, so he
has free run of the yard.  His preference is still to just take a leash walk!  He gets so excited when
he ses a leash come out of the closet.  And he continues to be very well behaved on the
leash---no pulling.  He continues to be well-behaved, period!  Monson doesn't climb on the
furniture--or on people!  I had a very frail visitor the other day, and he was wonderful with her.
He didn't jump or push, and was very gentle.  He has been good with everyone he has met, at
whatever stage of the human life cycle they have been, from infants on up to elderly. Monson
goes in for his neuter and shots the 24th, and then he'll be ready for his forever home.  And this
foster mom's opinion is that he would do well anywhere!

4/1/04 Monson just keeps getting better and better.  He is so easy to have as a visitor here--and
will be a wonfderful addition to his new home when he is medically ready to be adopted.  He
continues to be just fine with his limited activity, but he does LOVE his walks and car rides!  He
has learned to wait his turn for food and treats, and to take treats really gently.  He continues to
have a good appetite and really loves it when I boil up a batch of rice as an meal time addition.
He did have one accident in the house the other night,so I amgating him back into the bedroom
with me at night so I can be sure that he will wake me if he has to go out (he may have tried that
night--sometimes I am a sound sleeper!).  All in all, he is a real sweetie who will be ready for his
forever home soon--will it be yours?

3/19/04 The Riverview is lucky to have Monson visiting.  He is a perfect gentleman and has
settled in wonderfully.  He's gained a few pounds so he's not looking emaciated anymore--now
he's just skinny.  He behaves himself perfvectly in the crate each day when I am at work, although
he still needs a tiny push to go in.  At night he now has free roam of the house and pretty much
chooses to snooze on one of the dog beds in my bedroom.  Sometimes he curls up next to Tika
or Rocky!  He wakes me up when he has to go "Out", but now  he is able to make it through
most nights without any extra trips out.  His diarrhea has cleared up without any antibiotics, so my
hunch that it was just the changes he had been through seems to have been accurate.  He makes
friends with everyone he meets--human or canine--and is fine with my cat.  She is so relaxed
around him now that she will sleep in the bedroom when he is there! He has no ill effects from his
heartworm treatment, so when his month of quiet living is passed we will have him in for his
neuter.  Then this great guy will be ready for his new home!

3/12/04 Monson had his second heartworm treatment and he is doing just fine.  Doctor Doug
called this evening to check on him before the weekend, and he said everything sounded fine!
We have to keep him quiet, but that isn't hard because he walks so nicely on a leash. Good news
is that Monson did not have any intestinal parasites.  We are trying a few more days of dietary
caution, and if that doesn't do the trick than he will start on an antibiotic Monday for his persisting
mild diarrhea.  Personality wise, the vet and everyone at his office thought that he is GREAT!  I
agree!  He gets along with everybody and is such a gentleman.  He met a few more adults and
responded happily to all of them (I had a small dinner party) and impressed them with his
behavior.  They brought their elderly Brittany along, and Monson was great with him, too!  (Tika
wasn't great so she had to spend some time in the crate.) Monson also met my cat.  He was
totally disinterested, and didn't even evidence an urge to chase her!  All in all, this guy will be quite
a catch when he is done with his treatment.

3/9/04 Monson had some bad news today.  His neuter is indefinitely postponed as he tested
positive for Heartworm. He started treatment today and will get his second shot tomorrow.  The
vet said he has a very mild case and should have no trouble fully recovering.  He will need to be
kept quiet while the tretment takes effect and kills the adult worms.  Right now he is sleeping at
my feet while I type this.  He likes to be with his people.  My family room is full of Boxers!

3/7/04 What an exciting day Monson and the residents at the Riverview Boxer Hostel had today!
Lots of company coming and going. Monson loved everyone, and everyone loved Monson!  He
had the opportunity to meet not only some new male and female adults, he met his first
CHILD--a three year old ltttle girl and it was love at first sight!  He was so enthusiastic about
giving her lots of Boxer kisses (to her delight) that he climbed up on the loveseat to be closer to
her.  Adrianna has a Golden Retriever at her house, but she wanted to come to mine to see my
THREE dogs.  She loves dogs.  And they love her too!  He also got to play with a little Cocker
Spaniel who came to visit with her dad (who came to fix my computer).  She doesn't have a
fenced-in yard at home so everyone had lots of fun frolicking in the yard and running upa and
down the stairs.  Monson was a perfect gentlman the entire day--he is such a sweetie, we are
lucky to have him visiting here.  He goes in to the vet on Tuesday, so we'll have more accurate
information on his age and weight then--talk to you soon!

3/4/04 Monson is a happy fellow!  He has met some visitors--male and female-- and impressed
them with his personality and good behavior. And of course his good looks.  (I will try
again tonight to get some photos--I had some other digital glitches earlier.  Monson and I had a
lovely walk this beautiful spring-like afternoon.  It was totally unplanned.  Very early tomorrow
morning is my weekly garbage pickup so I was bringing the garbage out preparatory to
bringing the garbage can up to the curb for the night.  Monson decided to make an escape to
check out the neighborhood!  I crouched down and attempted to call him over to me, bu he had
his mind on wandering.  I ran back into the house for some shoes and hot-dog lures, and then
followed along.  Three blocks up the road he went over to say hello to a lovely, helpful, young
lady who had sized up the situation and realized I was looking for some help!  She petted him and
held on.  I introduced myself and Monson as my foster dog for SCBR--and low and behold she
and her mom recently lost a Boxer and wanted to get in touch with a rescue organization!  So I
got Monson and she got our web site address.  Then Monson and I walked back home, and he
demonstrated wonderful leash manners.  He didn't pull AT ALL, and that was with just a regular
collar.  He even knew how to go around obstacles like telephone poles without tangling up the
leash.  So this chapter of his story had a very happy ending. And now that he is with SCBR, his
life's story will have a happy ending with his forever family.  Is that you?

3/1/04 Monson is doing great!  He is already part of the family here at the Riverview.  He gets
along with Tika and Rocky and can even share food and treats.  He has not shown the
slightest interest in my cat, even when she meows loudly, so I am confident that he would be OK
with cats as well as with dogs.  He hasn't even shown any inclination to chase the chickens that he
can see and hear through the fence!  Monson had a bath, which he tolerated, and he looks and
smells much better now.  He continue to have a good appetite so I expect that he'll be back into
good shape soon. He has a nice broad chest, so he will have quite the physique when he's filled
out.  He goes in for his neuter next Tuesday, which will give him enought time to gain a few
pounds before the surgery.  Monson managed to 'hold it'all day today in his crate while I was at
work.  This is very good!  He is also able to amke through almost the entire night without waking
me because he has to go 'out'.  He had one accident in the house--we were on our way to the
door to go out and the poor boy just couldn't hold it any longer. I, the digital camera nincompoop
will attempt to take some pictures of him this evening.  Wish me luck!

2/28/04 Monson arrived at the Riverview last night, thanks to Liddy.  He is a plain fawn with a
white chest, white toes and a graying black mask.  He has natural ears and a docked tail. I'd
guess that at when he's filled out he'll weight about 75 pounds.  Right now he is emaciated! He
has a good appetite, so he should be gaining weight pretty easily.  Monson was a stray who was
never claimed at a shelter, so now he is with us until his forever home comes along. It shouldn't be
long--this guy is a real sweetie!  He has already met my male and my female and doesn't even
mind if they are near him while he's eating and drinking.  He definitely needs a neutering, and a
checkup which will happen next week.
