UPDATE 8/6/07 - Mocha is still wonderful. He goes with us everywhere we go and is
a goodwill ambassador for the group. He has friends at three of the restaurants we
frequent who love him to pieces. We have our son and his purebred boxer living with
us again and Roxy is Mocha's best buddy. The two of them rearrange furniture when
they play, keep me well exercised and make sure I never miss one of their treat times
or filling their bowls at dinner time. Both dogs like keeping dad/grandpa company in
bed until I get there. Roxy doesn't like going downstairs to her crate if her daddy
isn't there yet. We have a household full of boxer love and wouldn't have it any other
way. Thanks SCBR for all the wonderful relationships you create.
UPDATE 4/4/07 - I am going to try to send some photos of grown up Mocha. He
started out as such a little guy. What happened? He is now a 97 pound lap dog and
one of the sweetest guys ever. We are enjoying him so much as part of our family.
He has convinced my husband that our bed is better for him than his crate so we
have a very crowded queen sized bed. When I finally need some leg room, he gets to
spend a couple hours in his crate. Mocha has the girls at the bank in love with him. He
knows he is getting a treat every time we go to the drive up window and sits in great
anticipation of the treat. I took him in to the bank to meet them and he put his front
paws right up on the counter so he could say hello. I had to teach him that he
shouldn't do that. He has to be a gentleman. He travels with us every day when we
go to do errands and have lunch. He has a following at Paneras, Bradford Junction
and a couple other restaurants that we frequent. Everyone knows Mocha. He is Mr.
Sociable. If all goes well you will see photos of him and his best friend, our
grand-puppy, Iratze. The two of them are inseparable when they are home. They
literally move furniture when they play...she is 75 pounds he is 97. That is quite a
boxer rumble. We just wanted to let everyone know how well Mocha is doing and how
much we love this guy. Wouldn't trade him for the world. Happy Birthday Huck and
Cara. Cara, let us know how you are. We love to keep the family in touch.
UPDATE 6/13/06 - Mocha, adopted SCBR 6/27/05 is a big boy now. He weighed in at
a whopping 91 pounds last vet visit. He is a very sociable guy. We take him with us
every day. He loves to lay on his back on the floor between the back seat and the
front seat with one paw agains the front seat to keep him in place. If he isn't there,
he is in the front passenger seat keeping daddy company and sticking his nose out
the crack in the window. He loves to meet people and go for walks when we are out.
He goes for a walk before and after we have our lunch greeting people we meet along
the way. My son moved back home with our grand puppy, Roxy who is a purebread
beautiful fawn boxer girl. They were instant friends. Mocha follows her around with a
pull toy in his mouth trying to stuff it in her mouth so she will play tug of war with
him. She waits until he drops it, picks it up and runs with him right on her tail. Then
she'll go around in circles keeping it just out of his reach. They make me dizzy
watching them. Roxy reclaimed her chair so Mocha sleeps on his bed and let her have
the chair. They both like to play tag with Charlie Brown, our tabby cat who instigates
the play if they ignore him for too long. Roxy decided Mocha's food was better than
hers so they have their dishes next to each other and have switched dishes. Mocha
goes and sits outside Roxy's door in the morning and whines until I get her up. I
take her for her walk while Mocha waits at the top of the stairs for us to return, then
it is his turn to go for his walk. After they tear around the house tiring each other
out they each get an old marrow bone and lay next to each other in the living room
crunching away. Mocha likes to nip at Roxy's ankles and she doesn't seem to mind.
If he gets out of line she lets him know. They are a lot of fun and really pretty good
except for the box of kleenex they destroyed and the "snow storm" look in the living
room after they get done dismembering a stuffed animal. Life is sure a lot livelier
around here with two boxers. Luckily Roxy is an 80 pound girl so can hold her own
against our big boy. They actually seem to miss each other when one isn't around.
My husband is even enjoying the bedlam when they are running around and being
crazy. It's funny, they both move out of the way to let him walk through the room
when he wants to get by. We are putting a fenced in back yard as a priority on our
list so they can get outside exercise soon. If it ever stops raining, our contractor will
be able to come to replace the porch, deck and siding on the house so we can get the
fence up after that. I actually am trying to design the porch so it is enclosed and we
can let the dogs out from the porch into the yard. They actually have a storm door
with a factory installed dog door in the Lowe's circular this week. We may have to
consider that as the replacement to our broken door. We are still amazed at how
wonderful Mocha is. He is a very gentle, loving, bundle of energy. He is still enjoying
being a lap dog or cuddling with us on the bed. He is mischief enough to keep us on
our toes, energetic enough to keep me exercised, and is certainly smart and
entertaining. Seeing him pounce around the living room after a ball as if he were a
lamb was something to see. Jumping off the floor with all four feet at the same time.
Maybe he'd enjoy jumping rope. All in all, we wouldn't trade him for all the tea in
China. He is as crazy as we are and fits in with the family very well. Right now he is
angelic looking sleeping on his bed. The little horns only come out when he sees
something on daddy's table that looks good to chew on or when mom leaves her new
shoes on the floor where he can chew them up. The only thing he doesn't like to
chew on are his chew toys. I'll try to get some photos of Mocha and his new partner
in crime, Roxy, sometime soon. Hope Mocha's brother Huck, and sister Cara are
doing well. Can't wait to read their updates. That's all for now from WET NH. We
start building the ark soon if this keeps up. Thanks SCBR for the love of our
beautiful boy and all the wonderful work you do.
UPDATE 9/24/05 - Mocha is an obedience school graduate! We are so proud. He
graduated on his 5 month birthday. We still have a lot to learn, but it was a start.
He will sit, stay, go to his bed and lay down, give us a paw, get up in his lawn chair
and sit, and go in his crate for bed without any trouble. We still have to work on not
pulling on the leash, get him some play time with other dogs and continue his training
for leave it and start letting him stay for short periods of time in his crate while we
run errands so we will be able to go to our dinner meetings once a month for a club
we belong to. He is used to going with us everywhere we go. He is very sociable and
loves meeting people and dogs of all ages and sizes. Mocha has been neutered,
tatooed and microchipped. He is recuperating well. There was no keeping him down
after surgery. It was all we could do to keep him from running all out from the day
after surgery. He has been going around trying to clear his nose by snorting the last
few days. The vet says Benadryl twice a day and it seems to be helping. He sure
doesn't act sick at all, just snorts a lot. When he went in for neutering he weighed in
at a whopping 51 and a half pounds and he still has plenty of wrinkles of skin to grow
into. I guess the boxer is winning over the Jack Russell Terrier for size. Now that he
is taller, nothing on the stove, the counters or the table is safe from reach. He pulls
the dish towel off the stove handle, the placemats off the table, the cushion off my
husbands chair (he loves to shred foam rubber...this is pillow number four). Even my
husbands dentures aren't safe. He chewed a chunk out of the bottom plate so now
they have to be stored in a safe place at all times. Other than his mischivous
moments he is a great little guy and very smart. We are learning just how smart
when he went in my husbands pocket in search of a treat he saw my husband take
out of that pocket. He is still enjoying playing soccer and chewing up sticks when we
are outside. He has made fnds with a little girl across the street who used to have a
Great Dane for a dog so she loves to come over and play with him. Can't wait to get
a fenced in area for him to be able to run free and enjoy himself. He can invite friends
over to play then too. In the meantime we will look into play groups at the local dog
gym to see if we can get him to continue being a great big friendly guy. Of course the
dog sweater I knit for him in a large, is too small before he even gets to wear it so I'll
have to start another one soon. We bought him his own parka with fur trimmed
hood for the real cold weather that will be here before we want it to be. I'm sure he'll
appreciate having it when the cold winds are blowing. We'll see if he'll pose for a
picture in it. I'll try. No guarantees he'll cooperate. There is a BRAD at the Technical
Institute in Concord, NH that we are going to try to stop in and visit. We'll let you
know how he behaves. That is about all for this update.
Hard to believe he has only been with us three months. He is such a part of our lives
that we couldn't imagine not having him around. He truly is a wonderful 'little' guy.
UPDATE 8/27/05 - Mocha has started school! He is in with a very polite older female
terrier and a golden retriever puppy who are also both adopted dogs. Mocha is doing
really well despite his puppy exuberance. Mom is trying to keep up. This is my first
puppy and I'm learning a bunch. So far he sits, stays, lays down, goes to his bed
and lays down (for Frosty Paws he'll do about anything), gives me a paw and gets up
in his lawn chair and sits down. We are working on leave it and staying with mom
when we walk on the leash. He still loves to pull (drag) me around if he can. He is
much better than he was and will touch my hand for a treat so he stays closer while
walking. He loves to go with us in the car every day. He stays in his crate with the
tailgate open and watches people go by. We are very close by and only leave the
tailgate open when we are in our own regular spot where we know everyone and can
see him at all times. Not going to lose him after I'm getting trained just the way he
wants me to be! He is getting less vocal and more gentlemanly around other dogs
and will actually sit or lay down when greeting children now. Mocha was 37 pounds at
his last vet visit and I'm sure is closer to 50 pounds now. He sleeps all night and gets
me up early to enjoy the birds and the sunrise. It is beautiful out there at that time
of morning. If it weren't for Mocha I might not ever have known that, being the night
owl that I am. Thanks Mocha! Needless to say, I go to bed much earlier now too.
Mocha and our cat Charlie Brown have been playing tag every night for exercise.
They sure seem to enjoy the running around. It tires them both out and they sleep
real well after exercise time. We are hoping to have a fenced in area for Mocha and
me to go out and play next summer. It will be so nice to be able to take him off his
leash and let him run. I'm good at throwing if he's good at fetching. I'm sure we can
come to some agreement. We are enjoying Mocha's company and his intelligence. He
is so smart that he will sometimes do something wrong just so he can get a treat
when he is good and stops doing what he isn't supposed to. I have to watch him.
Can't reinforce these little habits even if they are very creative methods of getting
treated. Daddy and Mocha play every morning on the bed and at night before bed
time. He wraps himself around my husband and wriggles as close as he can get. He
has daddy trained to bring him a treat before bed every night. What a pair. We
couldn't be happier that we found Mocha or he found us. Love him to pieces.
UPDATE 7/5/05 - Mocha has felt like part of the family since we picked him up in
Maine. He is the most loveable, well behaved puppy I have ever been around. He
barked at Charlie, our 16 pound cat, until Charlie batted him in the nose. Mocha came
running and sat at my side for protection. We have taken him with us almost every
day and he lays right down on his cusion on the seat of the car, lets me put his
seatbelt harness on and usually sleeps until we get to where we are going. He loved
his visit to Petco, and came home with a couple of new toys to add to his box. He
drags the toys out every day and I pick them up and put them back for him to do it
all over again. See, he has me trained already. Mocha loves my husband. He went
down the second set of stairs to the bedroom, jumped up on the bed and licked him
awake. Then he wraps himself around my husband and pushes and wiggles until he is
as close to him as he can get. He loves pushing the pillows on the floor by diving
under them and standing up. Today he had a bath and sat and let me pour water on
him, lather him up and rinse him off. Never moved. When we tried to towel dry him it
turned into towel tug of war and we both had a great time. Mocha loves people,
carries himself proudly, and is always a gentleman. He is pretty much housebroken,
crate trained, and is pretty good on a leash. He sits on command to get his leash on
and off and today learned to play fetch with mom. Right now he is sleeping in his own
wingback leather chair with matching ottoman that my son's boxer broke in for him
last year. He loves sleeping there every night for about three hours before we go to
bed. We couldn't have gotten a better puppy if we tried. One person asked us today
if he was a show dog because he looked so clean and neat. How proud we felt over
that. Can't imagine life around here without him. I haven't been this happy since my
grand puppy lived here. Mocha has filled the void she left when she moved to
Kentucky with my son. I must say our foster family must have been fantastic to have
a puppy this well behaved, well adjusted, and sweet. Thank you Second Chance for
our new puppy! Wednesday we visit the vet for our first visit.
6/27/05 - Mocha has been adopted!
6/5/05 Mocha has arrived. He is Cinnamon's brother but he is about three times her
size. I think he will be the size of a normal boxer when he is full grown. Mocha is a
wonderful playful puppy. He spent about half an hour outside with my son and he
followed him everywhere. This is defiantly a puppy that loves kids and the outdoors. I
had to pick him up and carry him in because he really wanted to stay outside and
explore. Mocha will be a great addition to any family with the time to housebreak and
train him.
