UPDATE 11/25/07 - Max and I have had quite a year. This past Spring, my husband and I decided to divorce.
Despite his wishes that we give up Max to another family, I had decided Max is my family and we would stick it
out. We have moved to a new home with a nice yard for both of us. The transition has suited Max very well. We're
in a smaller house and he seems calmer in this smaller space. This change renewed my energy to work with
Max on training and he's done a great job. He is an obedient boy (although still extremely dog aggressive) who
wants to please. I do what's necessary to insure Max's safety as well as that of other dogs. In time I may again try
to work with a trainer or dog psychologist on Max's issues. Max is the most loveable and personable pet I've had.
He has been a great motivator to get up each day and get into routine. How lucky I am to have such a great dog!
UPDATE 10/19/06 - It's been awhile since I've provided an update - Max is doing great. He finally knows that this
is his home and he's lost the shyness and hesitation he first had 15 months ago. Max still has his issues
around other dogs but we've given him a safe, fenced backyard to roam in and the run of the house. We've also
worked on training and Michael has him lie down and wait when near other dogs on our walks. He is very loved
and a favorite with family, friends and regulars in our household. Max and Michael wrestle every evening. Max
loves my husband so much that every evening when getting home Max gives him a whole face wash of kisses.
We are fortunate to have found Max and Max found us. There's nothing better than an oversized lap dog who
cuddles up like a puppy and yet entertains us with his lip getting caught on his teeth (what a great look!), his
sloppy eating and endless energy for play.
UPDATE 11/28/05 - Life with Max is terrific! He has become one of the family. After several obedience sessons,
our dog trainer advised us to keep working with Max on his basic skills (sitting, off, drop it, etc.) until he does
them well and then we will continue with more training, The training has been great for Michael and I as well -
we're on the same page regarding command language and discipline co. It's now been 4 months that Max is
with us and he is becoming more and more puppy-like as if making up for lost time. He loves to play and will
bring his toy over, bop me on the knee and stare until I acknowledge him and play. He now fetches the ball and
will return it. He hasn't perfected dropping the ball however he knows it can't get thrown otherwise. Max is a
loving doggie - he can think of nothing better than snuggling on the couch with us every evening. My only
sadness for Max is that he is still unhappy in the presence of other dogs. The training has made it possible for
him to at least
be still and patient when other dogs pass by. We'll continue to work on this with him but we realize it might never
get much better. The really wonderful thing with Max is the morning kiss when he puts his head on the mattress
to give a kiss.
UPDATE 9/12/05 - Michael, Max and I have been having a great time getting to know each other. Max is a
personable, affectionate dog who very much wants to please us. Max has the run of the house and the yard,
knows full well that he's the super-dog on the premises. Max is enjoying lots of playtime with us (especially
chasing the chipmonks in the yard) as well as with our friends and his dog-walkers. Max is presently having
some dog training. He is insprired by 'CHEESE' and his dog trainer is helping him to get along better with other
dogs. Max has gained some weight, has a beautiful shiny coat and eats/sleeps well everyday. We are very happy
to have found Max and he having found us too.
7/23/05 - Max has been adopted!
7/18/05 Unfortunately, Max was returned as he has decided he wants to be the only dog in the household! Here's
a wonderful message from the family:
" Max is a truly amazing dog! He just loves humans and is so playful, a typical boxer puppy. He loves to box and
wiggle and have his belly rubbed. He does very well in the crate (he has unbelievable bladder control!!) and is
definitely a quick learner. In the short time we had him he stopped tugging on the leash, would heel, would sit so
you could put the leash on, and knew he had to sit before I would open the door to his crate or to go outside.
He's not a big fan of dog biscuits, but LOVES cheese! Go figure. He seems to have an aversion to the word
come, so we started using 'here' instead and he was doing really well. We also found that a harness was a
better option than a collar since he can easily back out of a collar and he doesn't seem to mind the harness at all.
We took him down to the lake and I'm not sure he had ever been in the water before. He just ran right in and
looked a little confused when the water was over his head! But he just swam back in to shore and had a great
time playing around where he could have all four feet on the sand!
Max is a great (but messy!) eater, but he needs at least another 8-10 pounds. You can still see his backbone
and his ribs are just sticking out all over the place. He loves a little bit of yogurt on his food, he'll eat every last
piece of kibble and then lick the bowl!
Unfortunately, I think because Max has never been shown any real attention by humans before, he is not willing
to share his humans. He had some issues with our resident female and I think he would be better off in a home
where there are no other dogs. He didn't have any issues with other dogs we saw out on our walks, it was just
when he had to share us. He just has the sweetest face I've ever seen and he is so lovable. He has a beautiful
coat and you'll just want to keep petting him!! He is dying to be the prince of someone's house where he can be
the center of attention and receive all of the love that he deserves. He is such a sweet boy and we are devastated
that our home wasn't the right one for him."
7/10/05 - Max was adopted!
6/23/05 Hi everyone...Max had his neuter on Wednesday and did just fine. He is a very sweet boy, I like him a lot! I
don't think anyone has ever paid much attention to him. At first he was not very interested in being patted, getting
hugs or attention...which isn't very typical of a Boxer! Now that he is more comfortable, he loves it! He is doing
great with his crating, and pretty well on leash considering that no one has worked with him on it, and rides well
in the car. When he is out in our fenced yard, he doesnt really want to come back in, but if I sit outside with him
for a bit, he comes right over for a pat. It's just a big game! Oh yes...he boxes really well, and wants to play as
soon as we go outside now!! I will be introducing him to our youngest and oldest male dogs this weekend.
6/18/05 Max is an owner surrender that came to me today thanks to several wonderful transporters. Max is a very
handsome young Boxer boy, brindle with a white chest, docked tail and natural ears. He will be neutered and
brought up to date on his shots this coming week.
Max has lived with other dogs and gets along fine with most, but did have issues with a rather large rottie at his
former home. He ate a nice big dinner and has been out a couple of times already, but is resting quietly in his
crate right now. Will have more soon on this cutie!
