UPDATE 11/27/05 - It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that our beloved Kiki went to the Rainbow Bridge on Friday, 11-25-05. She finally lost her battle with a high grade, aggressive form of breast cancer that migrated into skin cancer. The cancer spread within days and she could barely walk or lie down, as the
skin cancer seemed to mobilize in her hind legs. Her tissue was very thick and looked like very bad sunburn coupled with poison ivy. She was so brave. She was on so much medicine that it no longer was helping. To send her to the bridge was the only humane way to give her peace. She is now painless and serene - and as grateful as I am to have been her forever home here, her new forever home will guarantee she will never be hurt again.

UPDATe 11/16/05 - Hello, everyone -
This is to let you know that my girl Kiki, who I adopted on July 30 of this
year, had surgery last Thursday to remove a lump in her mammary gland. The
lump got very large very quickly and the vet was afraid of an infection,
since the tissue surrounding the lump was hot, red and gave the skin a red
welting appearance. Kiki was placed on massive wide range antibiotics for
two weeks prior to her surgery. Anyway, the surgery went well, but the vet
decided to x-ray her chest to make sure she had no build up of fluids and
lo, and behold - she found a bullet lodged in her upper chest above her arm.
I suppose this girl had a pretty miserable life to have had someone shoot
her - the bullet had been there for some time and the vet will not attempt
to remove it. BUT, the bad news is that Kiki has advanced breast cancer
which has now migrated into her skin. Her prognosis is not good - the vet
gives her maybe a year. I'm shattered. For those who know Kiki - she is the
most gentle and sweet dog you can ever hope to have. She had just completed
obedience school and was the apple of her trainers eye.

Kiki is stitched all over her belly and on part of her leg. She is
recuperating, but sleeps very little due to the pain. She is on a lot of
meds, but we need to be very careful, as certain meds make her VERY
aggressive. Sigh...I don't know what else to say. Please keep her in your
prayers - it would be most appreciated during this stressful time.

UPDATE 10/25/05 - Kiki continues to do well and seems to realize this is her forever home. We are seeing much more of her personality and she is becoming more playful. She is still a big girl and needs to shed some pounds - now that she has completed obedience classes we can stop giving her so many treats! She is so well behaved and is not growling at everyone anymore. She is also more tolerant of smaller children; we had our grandchildren visit from North Carolina and she was great with the 2-year old. Plenty of supervision, just in case. On a sad note, Kiki is experiencing some medical issues and we are dealing with them one step at a time. The week prior to adopting her she had to have a tumor removed from one of her mammaries. The tumor was benign, thank heaven! Now she has developed a tumor in the adjacent mammary and somehow has an infection that goes from the teat down her leg. I had her to the vet this evening and we are going to treat her with massive doses of wide range antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. Kiki seems no worse for the wear - she is still energetic and all kissy-poo even though by looking at the teat, you KNOW she has to be hurting. I see some surgery coming... Anyway, we'll keep you posted and in the meantime - Kiki sends boxer kisses and beaners to Jill and her family and to Jackie and Dan - her extended family!

UPDATE 8/22/05 - I am writing this to update you on Kiki's first month with us - we'll be on vacation when the update is actually due. Kiki continues to do very well with her new family - and extended families. She still growls at SOME children - but not all. There are two little boys who keep asking to pet her and when they approach her her growls get louder and louder. So, I tell them they have to keep their distance until she trusts them. Weird - she loves everybody else. To be clear, Kiki is never left unsupervised, so the chance that these particular boys will actually try to pet her is nil. Kiki seems to be in good health, apart from her weight issues. The vet called last week to say all of her blood levels were good but she saw something concerning her pancreas and decided to have us put her on a treatment. She said it was because Kiki must have had worms at some point - a bad case of worms. Anyway, I mix a packet of powder in her food once a day for a week; then wait two weeks; then do it again. Kiki doesn't mind - she seems happy to have the attention! Kiki starts obedience training this Tuesday, the 23rd. I'm sure she will do splendidly, unless she decides to be stubborn - she is REALLY stubborn when she wants to be! Kiki loves the outdoors and I have her out every possible minute that I can. We caved and put her on a cable, since I can't be following her on a leash until the rest of the fence is completed. She is very good and listens well - she rarely ventures out of the yard, but no chances here! Kiki still seems very sedate for a boxer. She gets a burst of energy every now and then and runs all over the yard, but that is not very often. She prefers to sit and bask in the sun, occasionally ambling over for her drink of water. She was upset with me when I would not let her out to lie around in the heat waves. We argued a bit over that and Kiki finally realized that I was keeping her indoors for her own benefit. We have since made up with some rides in the car and many kisses. See you next month!

UPDATE 8/12/05 - Kiki visited my vet for the first time yesterday,8/11/05. She went primarily to have sutures removed from her mammary gland, but I had the vet do a thorough eval on her just as a baseline. She was a very good girl at the vet and only growled once. We put the muzzle on as a precautionary measure, simply because we had bloodwork done. Kiki is free of any worms, etc. but I had her tested and vaccinated for Lyme disease because there was nothing in her records that indicated she had been vaccinated. She will return in two weeks for a booster, and it is then I will have her microchipped. We noticed two small lumps;one on Kiki's shoulder and one on her left abdomen. They are less than 5mm, but we will watch them closely. I will most likely have them out soon. We got a years worth of her Heartgard and some LOW CALORIE treats - Kiki weighed in at 79 lbs! I found out from Kiki's foster mom Jackie that Kiki was well fed in her previous homes. Since  I got her on 7/30, I have limited her meals to 1 1/2 cups of food twice a day and after this bag, will try to put her on a reduced calorie food. She gets no table food and she's really good about not begging. I've also been giving her the Eukanuba small treats - they're only 14 calories! She was such a brave girl and I'm so proud of her. Kiki is learning more and more how to play. The vet thinks she may have a thyroid problem, because she is so sedate. We're are running a battery of tests, so pray she has no significant problems. She is just too sedate for a boxer! She does love to take walks and we have been going two to three times a day. In the morning we go to a bicycle/walking track in a lovely park and Kiki is now walking (slowly!)a little over a mile. We'll get those pounds off her yet!Kiki is a very sweet dog and seems to get more and more comfortable with her new home each day. I am just thrilled with her!

UPDATE 8/4/05 - Hi! I submitted a form, but since I'm new at this, I have no idea if it got to the right place. So, I'll start over! Kiki was adopted on July 30th, but I could not wait to tell everyone what a wonderful dog she is and how well she has adjusted in such a short time. Kiki is a loving dog and wants so hard to trust. She has slight separation issues, but we reassure her that we'll be back to cuddle and love her. She is not crated when we leave and has not disturbed anything in the house - she's such a good girl. We trust her completely - but, ok, we did move a few things in the kitchen based on some of her bio - no butter dishes or counter surfing for this tubby lady. Kiki is about 12 pounds overweight and needs to shed those pounds fast. She sleeps a lot - the weather is very hot, so it's no wonder - but I do think some of her lethargy is due to being a porkasaurus! I know her new vet will tell us she is a 'coffee table' and will put her on a diet, so we jumped the gun and have reduced her calories. Kiki had some surgery to remove a lump from her nipple two days before she was adopted. She has an appointment with her new vet on 8/11 to remove her sutures and get a new evaluation. Better safe than sorry - I have found a small lump on her left shoulder that is smaller than a pea, but I found out by experience that peas can grow to half dollars in a heartbeat. Will keep everyone updated on this one. Kiki is very socialized and is the Queen of the neighborhood, as well as the house. She has claimed my overstuffed cheetah chair and ottoman as her 'throne'. Now I have to read elsewhere! Kiki is very gentle with the neighborhood kids and kisses them until they're wrinkled. I supervise all visits by children, again, based upon her last place of residence with children. So far she is wonderful with children. Kiki has had issues with going potty, in fact, I have tortured poor Jackie trying to figure out why Kiki won't go potty except very early in the morning and late at night. She had have been crated for a long period of time to have a bladder the size of Texas. Kiki has access to two huge water bowls all day - and I have seen her drink from both at various times throughout the day. A glimmer of hope was this morning - Kiki woke me up at 5:45 to go out and she pooped and peed TWICE within a two hour period. Needless to say, I am relieved that she feels relaxed enough to do her duty. It can only get better from here. We are trying to get her on a regular potty schedule where she goes in the morning, at lunch when Dennis comes home, and then at night whever she has to. Kiki seems to need to learn how to play. She is a very quiet and reserved girl, and you can tell she has been passed around too much. I had a friend visit on Sunday and when she was ready to leave, Kiki went to get in her car. You could just tell that she thought she was being sent away again. She seemed very happy when we saw my friend off and Kiki got to go back into the house with us! Kiki is very well-behaved, but she is starting obedience school on August 23rd. It is a group that meets once per week for nine weeks, so she will be more versed in etiquette than Emily Post when she completes her training! Kiki has a basketful of toys that she looks at, but doesn't play with, no matter how we try to engage her. We really will work on getting her to be a playful, carefree boxer girl again! She loves to walk and we go at least twice a day on long excursions to check out what's happening. She is so good on a leash and I have only harnessed her once to save my shoulder from too much pulling ( I tore a rotator cuff a few years back and have occasional bouts of bursitis). Kiki does not tug at all - she is amazing. See you next update!

UPDATE 8/4/05 - Ok, it's a little less than a week, but
I can't resist telling you what a terrific dog Kiki has been! She slept all
the way home from NY State to PA - about three hours or so. She seems to
love to ride in the car and has her own seat pillow for her riding pleasure!
I think she has done a remarkable job adjusting to her new home. We have no
other pets, so Kiki is the Queen of the house - and is she ever! We have a
big overstuffed cheetah chair that I purchased several years ago as MY
refuge - yeah, right. My beloved Zoe (waiting at the bridge)made it her
chair and now Kiki owns it - sigh...Kiki had some surgery to remove a lump
from her nipple two days before I adopted her. Her wound is doing very well
and she has an appointment with her new vet next Thursday, the 11th, to have
her sutures removed and an overall eval. My vet is excellent with the boxer
breed, so it relieves me to know she will get great care. I called Jackie
numerous times with questions about Kiki and she has been more than patient
with my ramblings! I am very concerned about Kiki's toilet habits - she
NEVER has to go potty. She would go pee and poop at 6am and not again until
10 or 11 pm. We would coax her to go potty, but she would simply lie down to
catch some rays. My best guess is that she was crated ALL the time for very
long periods. Today (8/4) she peed and pooped twice between 5:45 and 7:00 am
- so I am hopeful she is getting more relaxed to go potty more often. I give
her unlimited water throughout the day, which she does drink. I guess she
has a bladder the size of Texas. Kiki seems to not know "how" to play. She
will play with her stuffed piggy for about 15 minutes in the evening, but
that's it. It looked hopeful a few days ago when she picked up and chased a
jolly ball, but she only did that for a few minutes. We will definitly coax
out her playful side in due time. Kiki is eating well for us. She is 12 lbs.
overweight and needs to get those extra pounds off, so we are only feeding
her a cup and a half of food in the morning and again at supper time. She
loves to go for walks, so we do that every chance we get - at least twice a
day, in addition to playing in the yard. My vet will call her a coffee table
and chew me out if I don't get these pounds off her soon! Kiki sleeps with
us and licks our faces to get up - so much for an alarm clock - don't need
one! She loves the neighbor kids and can't get enough of my mother-in-law,
who talks to her like she's addressing a baby! Well, that's what is's all
about! That's it for now, so hang in there for the next update!

7/30/05 - Kiki has been adopted!

7/17/05 - Kiki has been turned back into rescue and is now at the Boxer'In on the Lake. Her foster dad picked her up yesterday and she is doing fairly well here. She is nervous but has of course bonded with her foster dad like he is the only resident at the inn. It must have been that 3 1/2 hour ride. She rode for a little while in the back seat but they took a break and he put her back in the back seat but by the time he had come around the car, she was sitting in the front seat with him. She is eating with a little reassurance that she is doing the right thing. Kiki was loved at her previous home but I do believe that it was a very busy household with young children and it seems like it was a little too much for her to deal with. We will have to see how things go for her here. Kiki was well loved and came with a bag of toys that she has already played with a few things. She is a little uptight here in her first day but we are seeing improvement. She appears to be a little fearful and we all will work to help her get through this. It's very hard on them to be in so many places in such a short while. We have given her for right now the spare bedroom with a gate at the doorway. All her foster brothers and sisters stop by for a little visit at the gate but we will take it slow until she gains a little confidence. She has met a couple of the boys and really had no problems with them. Max decided to jump over a gate to our kitchen when we had her in their with us and I wish you could have seen the look on his face once he was over. Kiki is a big girl and you could tell that he was wishing he hadn't done that once he was already over. Max is a big baby so it was funny to watch. Kiki paid no attention to him and Max was relieved. We got a pretty good chuckle out of it. Kiki has been great in her room and has had no accidents in the house. Once she meets you, she is happy to see you. Kiki needs some time to deal with all that has happened to her. She gives lots of kisses so I think with time, she will adjust to her new foster home. We will keep you updated as we get to know this girl. Kiki is up to date on her vaccinations and spayed. Right now she is sleeping out in the kitchen at her foster dads feet. She seems very content and I think she is dreaming of her new family. Please consider helping Kiki find a new home. Kiki just needs the right home for her-could it be yours?

4/01/05 - Kiki has been adopted!!!

2/15/05 - Kiki continues to be the sweetest, most loveable Boxer girl ever. She has no issues with my dogs being with her pups anymore so she has much more freedom. Kiki also thinks its great that Zelda and Ruby sleep in their crate but she gets to sleep upstairs with the other big dogs. Kiki finally did something bad the other day....I have to say I was kind of relieved because I was worried potential adopters would think I was lying about her being so "perfect". After Kiki ate breakfast she felt the need to steal the half full can of dog food off the counter. She was busted lying on the kitchen floor licking out the yummy food. I thought it was a fluke thing and didn't worry much about it. Today she stole the butter dish. We will work on her counter surfing and I am sure she will learn that it's not allowed very quickly. Silly Kiki even though she's a thief we adore her. Guess that's it for now.

2/9/05 - Kiki is doing great. She gets along fine with my dogs, kids etc. She is one heck of a Boxer Girl! Now that her pups are healthy Kiki has been joining us on some walks. She absolutely loves going for walks. She holds her head high and struts her stuff. It's so funny, you can tell she's happy. Kiki does pretty good on leash. We even passed a not so friendly Husky on one of our walks which Kiki just ignored. Good Girl!
Kiki loves food. Anytime I have anything in my hand she runs over to me and sits expecting a treat...little mooch! She gives paw and we are working on high five. Her dancing also can't be beat. This girlie always keeps us laughing. Guess that's it for now, I will send some updated pictures soon. Kiki looks fabulous now and is regaining her girlish figure.

2/3/05 - Kiki is a great dog. I will never ever run out of good things to say about her. She has a fabulous temperment and is really no bother to have here at all. She has become really attached to all of us. Sometimes she has a hard time deciding if she wants to be with us or her puppies. You can see the confusion as she goes from room to room.  Sunday night I was sick so I went to bed early and brought my dogs upstairs with me. I thought Kiki would enjoy having the downstairs to herself and enjoy some play time with my husband and daughter. My daughter informed me "Kiki is laying outside your door and won't move, not even for a treat" (this is odd as Kiki will do anything for a treat).  I told my daughter to let her in my room. Kiki came in came over to me, gently put her front paws on the side of my bed, gave me a few quick kisses and then laid down on the dog bed next to me. It was the sweetest thing ever, it was like she wanted to take care of me. She's such a good puppy mom I guess it makes sense she takes care of her people too!
Kiki is doing fine with the other dogs now. I don't think she had many toys prior to coming here so sometimes she's not crazy about sharing. She will give the other dogs a low growl just to be sure they don't take her precious toys. I am sure she will learn that she will always have plenty of toys. Kiki is going to be a fine addition to most any home. Once her puppies are adopted I will take to to my mothers to see how she does with cats. She continues to be great with my 9 and 2 year old. Kids of any age will be fine!

1/28/05 - Kiki is an absolute doll! She has been a pleasure to have here. She got a checkup last week, she tested negative for heartworms but has hookworms so she has been dewormed and will get another treatment in 2 weeks. Her kennel cough has subsided. She is in good health and was such a good girl at the vet.

Kiki is trying her hardest to help with her sick babies. Kiki is showing no signs of Parvo but we are treating her as a preventitive. She continues to be a happy, happy girl. Kiki has very nice house manners and loves everyone she meets. Kiki is very playful at times and loves rolling around on her back. Her favorite toy is a bright pink plush pig. She carries it around in her mouth. It is hysterical. I can tell she's feeling better now that she been getting good food and lots of attention. She gets happier everyday.

Kiki won't be able to be spay until 4 weeks after her milk dries up. Please don't

01/26/05 - Because Kiki's pups have tested positive for the potentially deadly Parvo virus and we don't know whether or not she has been vaccinated against it, we are also treating Kiki for Parvo now. Please wish her and her pups a safe recovery and donate to help her if you can.

01/22/05 - Kiki has arrived after a long road trip. Kiki is a beautiful fawn with cropped ears. She is enjoying some R&R here while whelping her 3 puppies.  There were 6 in the litter, 3 of which were adopted out from the shelter even though they were a bit too young to leave their momma. Unfortunately the shelter is extremely over crowded and has a low adoption rate so it was better to let the puppies go a few weeks early then put them at risk for euthanasia.

Kiki is housebroke and good in the crate. She fine with kids and adults too. I have not had her around my dogs yet as her maternal instincts keep telling her to protect her pups from other dogs. She is OK if her pups are out with my dogs but isn't happy if my dogs go near her and the pups in the crate. Kiki is a really good mom and she has no problems with us humans handling the puppies. As a matter of fact I think she enjoys the break, especially since in addition to having pups to take care of poor Kiki has kennel cough.

She is eating 3 HUGE meals a day and is starting to perk up. She was a bit tired yesterday but today she has been playing with us, her puppies and toys. Kiki is a really nicely behaved dog. She comes when called and knows sit, paw and "dance". It is really quite funny to see her stand on her hind legs and dance around the room.

After a little more time with her pups Kiki can be spayed and ready to be adopted. I have a feeling this little sweetie won't be around for long!
