UPDATE 7/17/06 - Harley's 1 year update
Harley is doing really really well in our home. This weekend we threw a family member a big birthday
party and Harley was in his element. People commented on well behaved he was and how gorgeous
he was (of course!). Someone how had a boxer themselves commented that he was most handsome
they had seen. He did just super with all the kids at the party and we were concerned because he's
not around kids all that much. He went right up a 2 year old girl and just licked her face! He also
played with the older kids (he was the one chased around the yard). It the was cutest thing to see. He
also scored one of his favorite foods (pasta) as someone put their full plate of pasta down on the
ground for a second and that was all she wrote! He had a blast and was sooo tired the next day but
then again so were we.
Harley's day pretty consists of twice daily walks and meals, Kong time, Kong treat time and running
around in the back yard, oh and snuggling on the couch to watch tv. Kong treat time consists of me
preparing the Kong of peanut butter and vanilla yogurt to put it in the freezer for the next day and
Harley getting the lick the spoon. Once when he was dead asleep I quietly picked up Kong and went
into the kitchen and he appeared behind me almost immediatley. He senses when food preparaing is
occuring and doesn't miss it for anything.
In the mornings he doesn't wake up until after 6:30 and we know this because when we get ready for
work in the morning we'll see him snoozing on the couch (how we wish we could be him!). He might
pick his head up but the expression on his face is priceless. We just know that he's saying "Are you
aware that it is too early?"
He's really just an awesome dog with a great temperment. He's really a big part of our lives and a part
of our family. He truly is a gift. Thanks very much SCBR.

UPDATE 9/6/05 - Harley has been with us for 3 months now and I think he's pretty much settled in.
August was a busy month for him. My last updated indicated that he had been sick and was on the
mend. We thought he was getting better but we ended up needing to take him to the vet again. Harley
had to stay overnight at the animal hospital where he got a strong dose of anitbotics and was
rehydrated. Poor Harley had had some loose stool and was then beginning to throw up the bland diet
the vet had told us to give him. Harley is now back to himself and has made a full recovery. We think
it was a different flavor of the Merrick food coupled with something else, a virus perhaps, so we've
gone back to his Cowboy Cookout and he's doing great. We were also on vacation throughout most
of August and so we were able to spend a lot of time just hanging out by the pool and going for walks
around the neighborhood and the park. Over the long Labor Day weekend I took him with me to the
park early in the morning and we had the whole place to ourselves. I didn't think dogs could grin but
I'm pretty sure that he did when he looked up at me on our walk. It's a beautiful park with a walking
trail around a big pond.
During our vacation we took Harley to a dog wash. There is a new gormet pet place that opened up
just around the corner from us and you can take your dog in and wash him in one of their big tubs.
We weren't sure how Harley would react to a bath since he showed no interest in going in the pool
with us, but he did great. I think it was good that we washed him ourselves instead of someone he
didn't know. After his bath he got a blow dry, a treat and a red bandana. He smelled like
marshmellow for the rest of the day!
Harley also got to stay overnight at his trainer's house when we went to a wedding. His trainer said
that he did very well and said that he would be happy to pet sit him anytime we needed to. I think I
had more seperation anxiety than Harley because I called to check up and make sure that he was
doing okay.
We also discovered that Harley likes children. One of my friends brought her 2 year old son over for
a visit. We were a bit anxious since we had no idea how Harley would react but it turns out we had
nothing to worry about. Harley walked right up to him and gave him many boxer kisses! It was very
sweet to watch him interact with the baby.
Harley is a great dog and we love him very much.

UPDATE 8/9/05 - Harley is a wonderful dog. He's been with us for just over 2 months and is doing
great. He's almost done with his obedience training and my husband and I work with him every day
so that he's practicing what he has learned. When we're out for a walk with him he sits and stays
when we tell him to and he also waits until we tell him it is okay to eat. The trainer has only had to
show him something once or twice and has told us that he is a very smart dog (something we already
knew). Unfortunately over the last weekend he got a stomach ache and we had to take him to the vet,
but he's well on his way to feeling better. He gave the vet kisses as he was being examined. Harley is
a quiet dog who loves to lay with us on the couch or hang out by the pool. He loves to play with our
friends when they come over and they sure do love him too! One friend took some beautiful candid
pictures of him that I'd like to make into a collage. He gets very excited
when we take him out for a walk, as he understands the question 'Do you want to go out for a walk?'
He runs over to his leash and looks at us as if we can't put his leash on fast enough so that he can go
out. He walks beautifully on a leash and has gotten many compliments from passersby. I took him
with me to Dunkin Donuts and left him in the car and when I came back I saw a lady blowing kisses
at him. Harley loves to play with my husband and always greets us when we come home with the
Boxer wiggle! He will wiggle his whole butt when we come through the front door and we never get
tired of seeing that. Another very endearing trait of his is that while we're eating, Harley will rest his
head on your lap. He is just too cute!!!! More to come on the next update.

UPDATE 7/6/05 - Harley seems to be adjusting very well. With every day that passes by we love
him just a little bit more. He had a rough first 2 weeks and we figure it is due to settling in to his new
home. He chewed the front door frame in the first week and in the second week he bit our neighbor's
dog. We're not really sure where the agresssion with other dogs is coming from but we are working
with a trainer to address that issue. Harley is a smart dog and he did very well at his first lesson. The
trainer thinks he will do just fine. Harley is a big lap dog and sometimes he doesn't realize his size but
when he crawls onto your lap you just want to cuddle with him! He is loved by all of our friends and
Harley loves being adored by them. As summer is upon us we've had a few pool parties and Harley
has helped to entertain our friends. He basically goes from person to person and is adored by them.
He really is a people person. The day after we entertain, we notice that Harley seems a bit more tired
and he looks at us with a surprised look on his face as we take him for a walk. We think he's saying
'Really, a walk? Aren't you tired from yesterday?' He has a new habit now where he jumps up on the
chaise lounge and lays right where your legs would be. I really shouldn't let him up on the lounge but I
like him right there with me so I just let him be. As my husband does laps in the pool Harley follows
him and when my husband completes the lap Harley gives him kisses. I've noticed that Harley like to
chase people. So when I take him out in the yard and tell him to come get me he bounds toward the
other end of the yard. He's not really that big into playing but sometimes we can get him to play fetch
with his football. Out of all of the toys that he has (and he has MANY) he seems to love his football.
He has his basket of toys right next to our TV and one night he went right up to it and fished out his
toy to play. SO CUTE!!!!! When we brought Harley we had bought everything he would need
including a bed and we put it in his room. Yes, he has his own room but he doesn't really enjoy it, so
we really don't make him go in there. We bought a big comfy bed and we found that he prefers the
couch. So glad we bought a bed! But he prefers the couch and Harley has his own part of the couch,
the chaise part of our sectional. His space is the best part of the couch. Sometimes he lets us sit there.
There is many a morning when I'll come downstairs and find Harley cuddling with my husband on the
couch. I need to remember a camera at that time because it's very sweet to see the two of them
together. We discovered that Harley LOVES peanut butter and when we fill his Kong with it he
gently takes it out of my hand and goes up to the family room to enjoy it. That Kong keeps him busy
for quite a long time. Buglars could come into the house and he wouldn't notice if his Kong with PB is
right there for him. I walk him in the morning and then again in the late afternoon. On really hot days I
don't walk him as I don't him to be over heated. We've taken him to the park but he gets very excited
over the other dogs and fixates on them. Since he's already bitten one dog we're staying away from
parks and places with other dogs until we can work on his aggression. Every time he seems another
dog he stands as though he's ready to attack and Harley is a VERY STRONG dog. We don't want
Harley or any other dog to get hurt so for now his contact with other is very limited. We're working
on that though, so we'll see what happens. My husband and I don't need him to love other dogs, we
just want him to bite any other dog. I don't want to close my update with a negative. Harley is a very
sweet, very good dog who just want to protect his home. Every day that passes he gets a little more
settled in. He stands guard by the window to check out the squirrels and the birds. When he's in the
back yard he'll chase them away and fling his whole body up against the fence. We think it hurts him
but he just comes right back to us and looks like he's smiling! He's a VERY GOOD EATER. He
loves people and they sure love him. He's gotten many compliments around the neighborhood on how
cute he is (but that's because he really is the cutest dog in the neighborhood so really they're just
stating the obvious). He likes looking out the kitchen window and then out the sliding glass doors. He
alternates between the two. My husband and I aren't planning any trips but we do vacation in Maine.
Perhaps we will plan a trip in which we can take him with us. I think he would love Maine and there
are pet friendly places we can stay at. For now, we're not planning on going away this summer. SO
when I go on vacation Harley will be right next to us on the chaise lounge right by the pool. He's not
really interested in the pool so we don't make him. He's content to sit by and watch us enjoy it. We
plan on taking him to get groomed soon. I brush him about once a week and he really likes it. He sits
still for as long as I do it. We'll see how he does at the grooming place. We'll update again next month.

6/3/05 - Harley has been adopted!

5/4/05 - Harley has been with us for a month now and continues to be the best Boxer at the tent. He
is a quiet dog that just loves a warm lap to lay on. He's even dropped a few pounds! Harley is more
or less a couch potato, he will go out in the backyard, but prefers to do his business and come back
in. He gets along so well with the resident 4 fur kids that we do not crate him at all, in fact, we put the
crate back in the shed. He takes treats nicely, eats all his food, has no food aggression, I have been
able to take his bowl away, put my hands near it while he's eating, and pet him too. I still can't tell you
about young children as we haven't had any younguns here since he came for a visit. He is just
wonderful as I said before with the teenagers, old grandma, young grandma and big people. I noticed
that Harley likes to look at the ceiling as the sun comes through a window, it will sometimes bounce a
reflection of glass or something off the ceiling and if he sees it, he will watch it with great interest.
Another observation, he got into my daughter's room by accident, he does NOT like cats! That is a
big NO NO. I don't know if it's small animals in general or just C-A-T-S. He would like you to know
that he is ready for a family to call his own, how about you?

4/18/05 - Well Harley made a very uneventful visit to the Boxer Doxer and was given a one year
inspection certificate.  He received his Distemper shot, his 3 yr rabies shot, was heartworm tested,
started his monthly heartguard and was dewormed.  The vet was quite impressed with Harley's good
nature. She said it was quite funny to see such a big booty doing the boxer wiggle!  Last night, Dave
and I honed our "guess your weight" skills for the coming summer's carnival circuit, neither one of us
was right.  Dave guessed harley to be 104lbs, I said he was between 112-115lbs.  Well, we were
both wrong, he weighed in at an even 95lbs. I will have to say that my guess was upon arrival, I never
win these kinds of things, but he definitely has lost some "baby fat" since coming here, being on a strict
diet and exercise regime he was put on!  The motorcycle blessing is in a few weeks and if he is to still
be here, he will need to lose another 10 or 15lbs to be able to fit into the side car. Harley is just
waiting to join up in another club, how about it?

4/11/05 - Harley has settled in to the Pup Tent and after taking introductions slowly, he's decided that
the resident chics are groovy.  He especially likes Lucy cause she's a little plump like him.  He
decided that he didn't like the meal service here, but after figuring out that DOG food was the only
item on the menu, he decided it was better than nothing. He likes attention and Amy, our "master of
walks at arms" took him for a nice long one.  She reports that he is not a puller, walks very nicely on
the leash.  Saturday, he worked with the resident human dad in the basement putting in a fireplace.
Don't say anything though, he's not in the union yet.  He stayed with Dave, following him around like a
nice boy.  He has met old grandma, young grandma, uncles Bill and Greg, niece and nephew (14 &
17) and a few others with no problem. We haven't tested him with younger kids, but I think he would
do fine with children.  This Harley doesn't have many miles on him and he is visiting the Boxer Doxer
this week sometime for his yearly inspection. A rabies shot and heartworm test for this model and he
is good to go. He is housetrained and he doesn't mind the crate, he actually has gone in it by himself
and took a snooze. He is still on probation, but it looks like this guy would make a nice addition to
any family.

4/7/05 - The Pup Tent posse would like everyone to know that their favorite Harley is a 'fatboy'! Did
you ever sit on a Harley and your bottom just fits so nice into that seat, the handlebars feel so
comfortable, the wind blowing through your hair, the shield keeps bugs out of your teeth, and the very
best is someone sitting behind you holding on tight? Well if you don't know the feeling and would like
the experience, we have the perfect Harley for you! Harley made his way to the Pup Tent tonight
when I met his very sad dad who felt it was in Harley's best interests to have a better life than that of a
solitary man. He works many hours and Harley was alone alot. This guy is full of kisses and if you
don't mind boxer boogers on your walls when he shakes his head, maybe you would like to add this
fulldresser to your club. He is a large fawn with a flashy white face, from a distance, he looks like a St
Bernard with the way his white comes up his face and splits his black mask. He's 4 yrs old, neutered
and will be brought up to date on his shots this week.  More to come on this new member when we
get to know him a bit better.
