UPDATE 6/19/06 - Well it has been eight months since we adopted Simon(Goliath) and what a big difference
we've seen. He has put on a lot of weight, so there are no more ribs to be seen on his sides! He takes his walk
every morning and just trots around the horse fields with me just as happy as can be. Before we take the walk he
helps me feed the horses and sniffs the whole down stairs of the barn to see if he can find the kitty. He dosen't
jump in the horses faces anymore so he is settled with them. He is absolutely great with all children and dogs,
never once have we had a snarly face from him. He has gotten much better with peeing in the house, but I think
this is an abandonment issue that takes a lot of patience so we just crate him when we are not in the house or
away and he is fine with that. We've always had to lead him into his crate, however this weekend my best friend
stayed at the house with my kids and animals so that my husband and I could go away for our anniversary. I never
told her to put a leash on him, but that he liked bologna and he walked right in the crate without touching him! (for
the bologna) I was shocked! So at least he's learned that it is not a bad place and we'll always take him out!
It does not appear that he will be able to run around free like Metty and Gypsy, but we give it a whirl every now and
again. He generally runs like the wind and heads for the road which is 1200 feet from the house so we don't try it a
lot . We may just fence in the whole area where the house is which is a lot of space so to say the least we won't be
doing it tomorrow.
Simon is such a love, and we couldn't love him anymore if we had gotten him as a puppy. I would say to all the
folks dealing with doggie issues, like potty training, and crate training. BE PATIENT! It can work but sometimes
you have to make it look like it's the dogs idea, I've found with all my animals!
UPDATE 11/20/05 - Well we have had a great week with Mr. 'G'! We called him this for several days as we really
didn't feel he was responding to the name Goliath. Well after much deliberation with the Girls we have named him
Simon. Why you say, well due to the fact that he is white and for the Halloween holiday we watched a movie called
the Canterville Ghost, and the Ghost's name was Sir Simon, so Simon it is. He has begun responding to it a little
so are pleased with the choice, despite a new rescue dog coming in with the name. (How weird is that?)
He has settled in wonderfully! We kept a leash on him for 4 days to observe his behavior with the children and the
other dogs. He loves the girls and looks forward to Bed time stories. He never gets on the furniture, loves his dog
bed a bunch, but when it is time for story time he jumps up on the bed and snuggles with us. It is just too cute.
After watching his behavior I found it unnecessary to crate him, he is not a dominant animal at all! He sleeps all
night on his brand new doggy bed, and so does Metty, which she has never done. He has had a few accidents in
the house but that is due to the fact we are not in the habit of having to 'take the dog for a walk' as we live on a farm
way off the road and our dogs just hang out on farm and come and go as they please in and out of the house. We
are doing better with that and I know he can hold it because he goes all night without an accident. He has the
freedom of the house because of his excellent behavior so we are keeping a close eye on him when we are home.
He does not counter surf, but he eats like a elephant! I have never seen a dog eat so much food! Fortunately he
gobbles it all up, but he is gobbling Gypsy's food when she is done, so we have to keep an eye that she is getting
enough to eat, but he walks right over and checks out her dish and finishes whatever is left. She dosen't seem to
care.
He has finally begun to play when we get home at night, don't get me wrong he has always given us a wiggle, but
now he play bows and wiggles and jumps in the air and does a 360. He really dosen't know how to play so we are
working on that having Metty chase the frisbee or ball so he can see that it is fun. He is not sure what to do with the
horses, my guess he feels he needs to protect me from these large beasts. He has jumped in their face while in
their stalls which is not good, and he also tried to run up Tiggers behind which is very bad. Thankfully he did not
get hurt, so we are restructuring his meetings with them in hopes he will be able to cohabitate with them happily. It
is our hope that he, like Metty, will be able to run around without a collar on the farm some day to enjoy farm life.
But we love him so much that we do not want him to get injured so we will work very slowly with the horses.
Everybody that has met Simon(Goliath)absolutely adores him. We have a very busy household and want to make
sure he settles into the daily routine like Gypsy and Metty. (Gypsy is a great teacher, despite her nasty attitude
toward other dogs) Our friend John comes over every day to work on the house and Simon follows him
everywhere! My housekeeper wanted to take him home because she fell in love with him. So suffice it to say he is
the greatest dog!
When we adopted Metty we didn't think we could ever find another dog that would come into the household and
behave so perfectly, but Simon is just as awesome as Metty. They are the best of friends and enjoy each other
immensely! Gypsy puts up with him as she is 15, and only snaps at him when he trys to move in on the pats she
is getting from Tom or me.
I even considered changing the name of my farm from 'Stonehouse Farm' to 'White Dog Ranch', which seems
appropriate since all of our boxers have only been white! We all Love Simon and will keep you posted as to his
progress!
11/11/05 - Goliath has been adopted!
11/4/05 - I cannot think of any type of home that Goliath would not fit in wonderfully. He is the biggest cuddler. He
loves to climb half way into my lap at night and cuddle. Sometimes he even falls asleep with his head on my chest.
He gets alone great with all my dogs even my female dog that hates everyone. I have caught them giving each
other kisses on several occasions. A couple of weeks ago I had another foster, Gulliver for a while. I was
concerned that they might not get along because Gulliver is only a year old but Goliath was so excited to have
someone to play with. He had more energy than Gulliver and still wanted to play long after Gulliver was worn out.
He loves kids and gets along well with small dogs. He even gets along with cats. Some dogs have problems with
strangers but not Goliath. He greets everyone like a long lost friend. Last weekend I was in the back of the house
and the dogs were in the kitchen when I heard voices. I went into the kitchen and found Goliath happily wiggling all
over and dancing around my mother in-law whom he had never met. So if you have a high traffic house and want a
dog that can adapt to that Goliath would be a great choice. On the other hand if you have a quiet house and want a
dog that will keep you company and cuddle with you Goliath would be a great choice. All he really needs is
someone to love him.
10/02/05 - Goliath has arrived at his foster home in Maine and is settleing in nicely. He gets along wonderfully wih
all my dogs and is very good with my son. He seems a little lost and lonely but I think that will all change when he
gets his forever home. He just seems to be looking for someone who will love him. I have him listed as 6years
old but that is just a guess. He was brought to a shelter with a cocker spaniel and turned over by someone who
said they found them running the streets. After the shelter adopted out the cocker spaniel Goliath started to get very
lonely so they had probably been together for awhile. I have a small dog here and Goliath gets along great with
him. So if you are looking for a great boy who gets along with everyone and really really needs someone to love
him Goliath is the boy for you.
