UPDATE 7/9/10 - Gia has been with us five years now! She's has slowed down alot, but she is twelve after all...
The obedience classes and hand signals earlier in life have definitely paid off as she's also gotten a little hard of
hearing in her advancing years, but the eyes and sniffer still work at feeding time. She still loves to romp like a
pup in the yard, just not as long and the nap time to recover after has increased.
The senior lady of the house still keeps the young one in check but tolerates a little more "guff" than she used to.
But she's still happy and comfortable and enjoying her golden years,
UPDATE 7/17/09 - Gia is doing quite well for a 10-and-a-half-year-old! We adopted Gia as a "senior" in 2005,
and have enjoyed four fun filled years so far. While she has gone gray in the face, and has benign bumps and
skin tags, Gia still loves to romp in the yard, chew her nylabones, and chow down on her food and doggie
"cookies"!
In 2007 Gia had CCL surgery, and I am so glad we did it. She was restricted in her activity for a while, but now,
on her metal knee, she can run as she pleases. She has a lot of life left in her!
In January 2008, Gordon and I had to send our other dog, Scout, to the rainbow bridge. Scout was a very laid
back pit bull of 8 or 9 years old - another adoptee. About a week later, at the MSPCA, we found another pit bull -
the spitting image of Scout - but an 18 month old female. Well, the next day "Roomba" was adopted and came
home with us, and Gia had a baby sister! Both dogs adjusted well, Gia to being top dog, and having a young'un
to boss around, and Roomba to living in a stable home after 6 months in a shelter.
Roomba is a little too rough in play for Gia these days, however in early days Gia taught Roomba to box like a
boxer! Roomba blows off steam playing fetch with me while Gia lounges on the sidelines, soaking up the sun.
Both dogs are glad the sun is finally out this summer.
Gotta go - Gia is talking like Chewbacca, it must be meal time!
UPDATE 9/3/08 - Wow, Gia has really been with us for over 3 years??? She is doing great! Although she has
slowed down some (and is a little grayer around the temples), she still has enough spunk to play with her
adopted sister Roomba. We adopted Roomba early in the year after the death of Scout, Gia's adopted brother
just a few days after Christmas and just a week after Gia's last update. Gia has been very very patient of having
a spunky year old Staffy bouncing around and will keep pace and truth be told sometimes instigate the
roughhousing. Gia has also enjoyed Buddy my sister's boxer on trips to Western Mass. and still loves the beach
when we go to Kennebunk in the summer.
UPDATE 12/18/07 - Gia is doing great. She is still very active for a dog her age. She has almost completely
recovered from knee surgery this summer. She gets better everyday. She loves her daily walks in the woods
and a good game of fetch. The snow, not so much. We can't imagine a home without her.
UPDATE 10/3/06 - Gia is doing very well!!! She loves walks in the woods with the humans and adopted brother
Scout. It's hard to believe that she is almost eight!!! She still acts like a pup especially when a ball is involved.
She has discovered the soccer ball our neighbor's dog has and keeps swiping it, I guess we're off to the
sporting goods store!!! Being the water dog that she is she enjoys the trips to Kennebunk ME to go visiting, and
seems absolutely enthralled with the boat that just came home (she's gonna have to wait till spring though :( !).
We jokingly call her my chaperone, always following & watching. Her biggest concern seems to be the tractor,
evidently it has no business being near her humans!!!
UPDATE 9/8/05 - Gia is doing great, she loves to run in the yard. Four acres of running room does a boxer good.
She has really toned up a great deal, she looks amazing. Most people don't believe us that she is seven. Gia
loves the frogs and toads that come up from the pond and is endlessly fascinated by them. She starts
obedience with the Goldman's next week and has already made progress at home. We had hoped to get her
into August classes but they were full:( . She is getting along great with Scout our other dog and they have taken
to sharing the same dog bed even though there's two. My sister and brother-in-law were over for Labor Day and
their Cairn terrierist tired Gia right out, I didn't think it was possible. Will keep you posted with more updates as
they come.
UPDATE 8/11/05 - Gia is doing well, she has really settled in. She LOVES playing ball and running in the big
yard. She has been signed up for obedience that starts in September, I've been working with her and she now
understands a few hand signals now too. Gia has become very attached to me, watching out the windows if I'm
cutting the lawn, always following one step behind wherever I go. She is such a sweetheart, even showing an
extreme amount of care for our other dog who had an operation recently. She will hopefully be meeting up with
another Boxer who belongs to our friend George for a playdate (Gia definitely would love it). Gia has even toned
up a little bit and will play for hours when it's not too hot and muggy, she looks great. Thanks again!!!
UPDATE 7/13/05 - I have tried twice to get in touch with Leann but have gotten her machine. So I figure it can't
hurt to enter Gia's one week update here as well. Gia is doing GREAT!!! She and our other dog Scout are getting
along great. They are together almost constantly. Gia is having a lot of fun in the backyard. With 4+ acres to
explore it will keep an active girl busy. Gia has discovered horses and seems a little guarded about those 'big
dogs', but I'm sure she'll adjust. She had her first visit with our vet on Tuesday afternoon and everyone there
loved her! Gia also got microchipped while she was there, not a whimper, what a brave girl! She is a phenominal
dog!!! Gia loves the water and has gone swimming in the pond near the house, we let she and Scout swim
together the first night and they tuckered themselves out playing fetch. Gia has definitely had some obedience
training in the past and has already earned the priviledge of working off leash for short periods in the backyard
already. Her reward for a great job was a trip to Stateline Pet Supply to pick out some special outdoor toys, she
especially loves the Chuck-it tennis ball launcher (good for hours of fun). She follows Kathryn and I almost
everywhere, and is quite attached to me. Everywhere I go I have a shadow! And if she isn't following her eyes
are!!! We are still trying to decide on where to take her for obedience. My friend Marcia Flynn is an incredible
trainer who works for PetSmart but their training area has been downsized and is congested. Glenn Goldman is
who I'll probably contact next as I know him as well (he's one of my tennis customers), and I'll discuss classes
with him. Thats about where we stand right now, please email with any questions or suggestions. Thanks!!!
7/5/05 - Gia has been adopted!
06/27/05 Here is an interesting fact about Miss Gia: she is a water lover! If you live near a lake or the ocean, you
will MAKE her life! I took her for a walk yesterday and we went over to the river and she couldn't get enough of
chasing a stick into the water-then swimming back! She was so happy her little stumpy tail went crazy! This dog
is amazing, she gets along with everyone she meets- little kids included! She does well on the leash but is
perfectly fine without one, she likes to stick close to you and when she wanders off you just call her and she is
right back at your side. She does this cute bounce when I first get home from work and gets so excited about
everything! She loves her food, ball, toys, you!! What a happy dog! No seperation anxiety that I can tell except if
you leave her outside too long, then she will bark until you let her in. I love dogs this age, they have all the
mellow-ness of an older dog but once you get her going, she acts just like a puppy- as you can tell I love this girl,
what a doll! Hopefully all the pictures her 'Auntie' took show up on the site, then you can see how pretty she is
and how much she loves the water! Call soon because this girl is gonna go quick!
6/26/05 - Gia is an owner surrender, well taken care of 7 yr old female. She is a pretty fawn with nice white
markings, looks to be about 70lbs. She arrived this afternoon and so far, she is just fine! She gets along great
with other dogs and with my kids. She knows tons of commands, is a good listener and doesn't seem to be an
escape artist. I think she is going to make someone very happy! I will update her next week after we see how she
does at night and when we take her for a walk. Its too hot today to really hang outside so her & my dog Draco are
lying in front of the air conditioner 'chilling'.
