UPDATE 7/11/05 - George is doing great. Initially when we picked him up we were
taken aback with how thin he was, but he is gaining weight nicely. He did great on the
ride home which was a 7 hour trip from Rochester to CT. At first he was very anxious
and timid around new folks and if we left him alone for anytime. But he is responding
great to new folks and is much less anxious when we leave him alone. He gets very
excited when we return!! George also had a 'shower' given by SHerry's girlfriends to
welcome him. Half way thru his shower he was putting his head into all the gift bags
and his head on all the ladies' laps. He was the true center of attention. Health wise
his sutures from his neutering procedure healed nicely. His appetite is great and he
exercises everyday for a long run in the AM and PM. The rest of the time we walk him
on a lead. He is doing better on the lead but still pulls a bit. He LOVES to chase our
cats but clearly just wants to play. That is the area where we see the most
improvement. It was sad to see him at first not know how to play but he is catching
on very quickly. We have an upstairs balcony that overlooks the water off of our
bedrooms. It is completely closed in and very safe and very cool. George loves to sit
out there and it has really become 'HIS' balcony. He is a typical boxer in the fact that
he just loves being with people and he is a joy. As far as obedience school we are still
looking around. We are planning a trip in late July to our summer home in Canada and
George will love it up there. When we return we will schedule th eschool.
6/11/05 - George has been adopted!
6/5/05 George is settled right in already. He still gives that 'please don't leave me
look,' but I realize, what boxer doesn't give that look? I took him to the vets and he
is now updated on all shots and negative for heartworm. The vet confirms he is about
a year old. He is 56 pounds and definitely could stand to gain a few more to fill out his
loooong frame. He does the sweetest thing. I'll be lounging on the couch and he'll
come up, sit his head right on my lap with a 'please, mommy' look. If I say, okay,
then he'll come up and snuggle with me. I just think it's cute that he asks for
permission first in a doggy sort of way. He doesn't show interest in toys or running
around a whole lot. But it is very humid here so all the dogs are just chilling out. He
pulls on the leash when we're out walking or in new territory such as the vets' and
PetSmart. But, when he sees another animal and is curious, when I tell him 'leave it,'
he will come back to me,and does not continue to pull towards the critter of interest.
Same with if I want to 'steer' him in a different direction, he will go my way. So he has
a 'selective leash pulling problem.' I am certain with more treat motivation and
obedience classes, he will be fine. Other than that he really doesn't display any super
annoying or concerning traits. I still say yes to a fenced in yard is a must, and other
dogs are okay as long as they are not dominant or 'challengers.' Why not give in to
those sad big browns of his and fill out an app for George!
06/01/05 - George is definately a royal dog. He is very looooooong and regal (a
little skinny for now) and has a long muzzle. People mistake him for a small Great
Dane! He has the sweetest round eyes I've ever seen. He pretty quiet. Sometimes
barks at strangers and whimpers when he has to go potty - which I feel is a good
sign . He gets along with my other boxers except Apollo tried to challenge him - I
figure that is because George is not yet neutered and is closest to Apollo in age. So I
keep them separate. George is not dominant either, in fact he ran from Apollo. Also
he will try to run if he sees it's crate time. A filled bone or pig ear will entice him into
the crate but I see he prefers to stay by my side or stretch his loooooong body out
on the kitchen floor. A fenced yard is a must for this guy. I've heard he can be a
houdini escape artist. He hasn't tried it yet with me. But I can tell that he'd be the
type to rip a tie out right out of the ground so he could be with his humans. It's just
one of those things you can sense after being around different boxer personalities.
He also shows that typical 'don't leave me or do something bad to me' cower I see in
some rescue dogs. But he is learning quickly that he'll be safe (spoiled) here. I've not
seen any countersurfing, trash diving, or destructive behavior. Also he goes right out
for potty, no accidents so far. Leash walking - well, that will be some work. He is very
strong and a puller. I think obedience training and a gentle leader will help. He is very
treat motivated as I've already taught him to sit and lay down. So, roll out the red
carpet and give King George the royal treatment! In return you'll get a loyal, royal,
loving boxer boy
