UPDATE 11/1/05 - It is with great sadness that I let you all know that Flash just very suddenly moved
on to the Bridge. He had been slowing down, but was a happy, proud member of our family who still
loved to play and snuggle. He died in my arms in his favorite chair after hearing his foster mom Adele's
voice and he looked at me before he went... he knew he is loved and we were here for him. He
brought so much to us since we got him in January, and always reminded me that you get back up
when you fall, don't let it hurt your pride and that life is good as long as there are good friends and
food. He was the friendly fella who greeted all the new fosters with pleasant enthusiasm and impressed
everyone he met with his charm and proud nature. He will be deeply missed.
05/22/05 - Flash is doing just great and enjoying the warmer weather. He likes to chase balls and run
through the fields. He seemed like he didn't have much energy in the cold weather, but now that it's
warming up he's shown me just how much he likes to play outside! He loves playing with Max and
chasing the ball out there, and he looks up at me with the happiest face and I can tell he feels so good
and loves life, even though he can be a sourpuss sometimes!!! In a really cute and endearing way, of
course! He always has quite a lecture for me if his dinner is a bit late and has his favorite chair.Hhe's a
little stubborn on occasion, like many older dogs, but he always gives in amicably. He likes to pretend
sometimes that he is very serious which always cracks us up. He is quite a character and really likes to
snuggle. It's the cutest thing to see him play with other dogs or wiggle around when we come home
because he doens't wear his smiley face all the time. He loves to snuggle and is great with all the fosters
and other dogs and loves to ride in the Jeep. He looks so proud and content when I take him riding, in
fact he is never happier than when he is in hte front passenger seat next to me! He is really a very
loving, silly boy hiding under a somewhat serious exterior, which makes his disposition all the more
amusing. He has become a marvelous addition to our little family and we are thrilled to have him with
us!!!
03/15/05 - It's hard to believe Flash has only been here two months, although we are still getting to
know each other in some ways. He is really enjoying being the "Big Cheese" around here, and just
loves to spend time snuggling with us. My Boston Terrier, "Funny" usually doesn't take kindly to other
dogs, but she snuggles happily with Flash on their favorite chair.
Flash is never afraid to let me know when he wants something, or when he feels that I haven't given
him quite enough food. His "woo woo" lectures are quite amusing, although he thinks he is being so
serious when he chews us out! He likes to chase after squeaky toys (after he "kills" the squeaker in
them) and just loves going visiting, going for rides or snuggling and getting attention. He loves meeting
people,, is great with all of the foster dogs that come in, and is very tolerant of their antics. He does
have an issue with his hind legs which sometimes fall out from under him, which my vet thinks is in his
hip sockets, but he doesn't have any problem getting around, or getting up on the couch for that
matter, which we all know is very important! He basically will have his hind legs collapse if he moves
too fast on a slippery floor, or he is stiff when he gets up after a long snooze. He will sometimes snap
at a person or dog if they step on or otherwise hurt his back legs while he is laying down, but doesn't
mean anything by it - just a reaction. I have upped his glucosamine chondroitin dose and after only a
week, I have to say I have seen a big improvement. He makes me proud though when he does slip and
fall - it doesn't hurt his pride a bit and he gets right back up. He's a proud boy, and seems very
confident and sure of himself. We could all learn a thing or two from his good attittude!
Flash is sweet and very obedient and cute. We are so happy to have him here, and he is such a great
companion. He beams with pride when I tell him what a good boy he is, or when people meet him and
remark at what a handsome boy he is. I never crate him when I leave, and we have never had a
problem. It helps that we have a door to our kitchen, since food is his real passion. Remember the
cartoon with the ant and the aardvark? Th ant would go down into a hole and the aardvark would
stick in his nose and turn into a vauum and try to suck the ant out... well, that is Flash grazing at the
floor. I alwasys say to him when he's doing it (in the right voice of course) "Hey, ant... I know you're in
there" and he just keeps doing his thing. He seems very happy and content and loves being with us. He
has brought us tons of happiness already, and I am so glad I picked him to come and join our little
family because he fits in so well and has such a great personality.
02-21-05 - Flash is doing great. He has settled in so quickly, and is being such a comfort to me while I
grieve over the lost of my companion of 7 years, Babboo. He is geting along well with my Boston
Terrier and my 79 year old mother who doesn't get around too well. He is very obedient with us both.
He loves going for rides and I take him whenever I can. He really loves going on my Avon runs with
me and off to BRADs, where he is always a big hit. He rides really well, and in fact, one of his
transporters said he sat in such a dignified way that she was sure he was going to ask the toll booth guy
if he had any Grey Poupon! So now when we go for rides, I tell him we're going to get some Grey
Poupon. I cna't wait to see how he likes ridingin the Jeep when I take the top off in the summer. I'll bet
he'll be really excited.
He loves to snuggle and play with toys, especially a silly purpley plush toy that his foster mom Adele
sent him. He enjoys games of tug with me and is getting wise to may fake throw tricks, as well as my
"finger in the ear trick" to get him to let go of the toy so I can throw it!!! He he has quite a grip but likes
to chase after the toys, and seems to especially like it when I mock wrestle with him when he's feeling
spunky. The first time I "wrestled" with him created a real bond with him and he really turned into "my
buddy" after that. He seems very content and comfortable and we have had very little need to correct
his behaviour. He gets down to "business" quickly outside and seems to be getting more active.
Initially, I was concerned about some weakness in back legs, but it seems more related to get riled up
on slippery floors and loses his footing, but I have seen significant improvement. As a precaution, I also
give him Glucosamine Chondroitin, which he thinks is a treat and chomps it straight out of my hand...
no need for shoving the pill in the back of his throat since he gobbles it down like it's a hunk of beef.
Speaking of food, I haven't seen him meet a morsel he did't like. He'll gobble anything that isn't nailed
down and our kitchen floor has never been cleaner. He lives by what I call "Beau's Law" (Beau was
my first boxer) and it's a simple law: "If it's on the floor, and it fits in my mouth, then it's food" (this
should be recited with a cartoon voice like one of Fred Flinstone's co-workers and I always throw in a
few "duh"s for good measure) so I do have to fish for things in his mouth when I find him randomly
chewing, but no problems other than that. The only bad thing he got into was part of a bath sponge,
but I found most of the pieces and it wasn't used for cleaning (no bleach or anything in it) so I'm not
concerned. He is lef tuncrated with my Boston when we leave (which isn't very often) and he does just
fine... that seems to be prime snoozing time for him!
He isn't shy about letting us know when he wants something by giving us a real "what for" with a bunch
of "woo woo roo" noises to make sure we get it... of course, this is adorable and irresistable so I have
to spend some time woo-wooing right back at him. He knows i am teasing and he is good spirited
about it. He's a good sport. I can't wait to see him running around the place in the Spring when it
warms up as he's not fond of the cold, but des like to run around and we have lots of room for that
here. He's a great guy and I am thrilled to have him. Everyone should consider giving a "senior" a
forever home since they have so much to give and ask for so little.
01-15/05 Flash has been adopted!!!
10/9/04 - Adele & Flash came to our annual reunion picnic (SCBR Boxer Blast) last week & we all
got to meet Flash for the first time. What a SWEET boy he is! He is very handsome in person &
does not look or act as old as 8 (which is just a guess on his age). We had a great time with many of
us taking turns watching him during the picnic. Flash impressed us all with what a great dog he is! I
heard all day "Why is HE still waiting for his new home?!" & "THAT is FLASH?!". People could not
believe he was so wonderful. He met adults & children of all ages & was happy to see everyone. He
tried to play with a few other boxers there & enjoyed himself watching everything going on & being
showered with all the attention he received everyone. Flash is waiting for his new home to come, isn't
that you?
8/29/04 - Look at the great new pictures of Flash! I wanted my son to get some action shots and at
the same time to show Flash's personality. Relationships with the other two dogs are much better, he
knows better than to try and help himself to their toys and food. He can now even play with my Roxie
who was initially quite hostile to him. Flash is such a loving dog, and after he knows guests are
welcome he makes up to them in a big way--head on their laps, very friendly. I finally got around to
teaching him to "Down"--not hard with the right incentive. He loves to walk in the alfalfa field (oodles
of space to run). I also take the three dogs to the river, Ludwig swims but the Boxers don't. Flash
loves to go after sticks thrown in the water, and even digs up stones on the bottom . He paws around
and if the water isn't too deep he dips his head down to pick the stone up, he goes in up to the top of
his shoulders He just loves doing that. His favorite resting spot is my bed; he chooses the side I sleep
on, arranges the pillows to his liking and zonks out. When he gets adopted I will sorely miss him
and I'm sure it would be mutual, but we know Flash's new home really is out there looking for him!
7/14/04 - Why is Flash not pending with his new home yet?! He is looking good, behaving well and
seems to me adoptable to people who will love him in spite of his somewhat asymmetric face, his age
(est. 8 yrs), and his eye that has slightly red tissue around the inner border, which the vet says is not a
problem. He is so sweet and loving. Won't you please open your heart & home to this good old boy?
6/14/04 - Flash is still waiting for his forever home to snatch him up! Since we are not sure of Flash's
age at this point, my guess would make him about the same as Roxie's, who will be 8 in Sept. My
guess is based on the amount of grey on his muzzle, his level of activity (not quite up to Roxie's, but
that is the reason I don't think he's any younger than her). Flash has learned a lot since coming to
Dogpatch Foster Home. He respects the other dogs' food and toys much more, thus not provoking
their frustration with him. He sits and waits for release to get out of the car, to come to eat and to get
his treats. Flash is appropriately cautious about new company, but as soon as he sees that company is
accepted he is immediately enthusiastic in his greetings. He loves to chase balls especially the larger
ones, but isn't so good with returning them to the thrower for a repeat! LOL He also likes Nylabones
& loves to go for walks and rides. Don't wait any longer, let's get Flash into your family now
4/29/04 Flash continues in his endearing ways, loving and seeking love (not sure which comes first).
We are working on sits and waits in various situations. He's excellent with sitting and waiting for dinner
and treats. He is improving with sitting and waiting to go thru the door, and getting in and out of the
car. He loves a romp in the alfalfa field and chasing Ludwig and Roxie there. He understands words
like walk, dinner etc. (you can't tell me it's all blah, blah, blah to a dog} He is much better about
crating--with the help of stuffed kongs, and is quieter when left there when I go out. He is properly
protective, but when the visitor is inside he can't be friendly enough--the problem now is getting him to
exercise some restraint.
2/5/04 Hi, Flash here. I'm getting tired of being a foster and I want my own forever home. So I am
taking matters into my own hands--er, paws. It's not that I'm not happy here. In fact things have
gotten better: Roxie is much less bitchie and no longer snaps at me, doesn't even curl her lip at me so I
no longer hafta watch my butt. But it feels kinda tentative and I'm not getting any younger, and I want
to settle down and not hafta compete for love with three other dogs, just one other would be fine. So
I'm asking Joann, (who takes really good pictures, so altho I am handsome, maybe she'll make me
even handsomer}, to make an appointment for a sitting (or standing) next week I love people and
once I know they're not any threat to me and my humans I stop the barking and start with the loving; in
fact sometimes I get a little enthusiastic but am learning not to jump on people. I love to go out on the
meadows (except in this biting cold) and run and chase Ludwig and evenRoxie. I'd like to go out more
frequently, but not in this weather, and nowthat we're getting more snow, it'll be awhile before we'll go
again. (Myfoster mom finds it tough going in all that snow.) I love to play ball, esp.with that large ball
with a handle. My mom says I'm sweet and loving and good. I don't do tricks, but can wait until
released before I go and wolf down my dinner; ditto in the car, my mom is afraid I'll get into trouble if I
jump out of the car before she tells me it's ok. I love to ride in carsand am learning that I shouldn't sit in
the front seat, and have learned toget in the back when Adele tells me to. Well, I probably shouldn't
blow my own horn any more; probably there are more things you'd like about me. Check me out. Flash
1/7/04 Flash is doing great. It is wonderful to see how these dogs are once they've gotten over the
trauma of the change. He has become much more self-confident. He has changed from being a velcro
dog, being fearful of leaving my side on walks to racing around with the three younger dogs and
really enjoying the fun. He has learned to sit and wait for his dinner, to wait for exiting the car; he has
even learned to trick me into getting extra treats--the four dogs get treats after their last of the day's
business outside. So he figured if he went out a little earlier he'd get a treat then and then insisted on
going out a little later he'd get another. It didn't work so he doesn't do that any more. He loves to sit on
the couch with me, head on my lap, is anxious to receive and give love. He is great with company
once he sees that they are welcomed by me. He barks at the neighbor across the street when she
shovels her driveway or drives off in her car and is appropriately protective, not aggressive. He is
waiting patiently for his forever home, for a family who won't be able to resist him, who will love him,
play with him esp. ball, take him on walks. Are you that family--or person?
12/15/03 Flash is doing very well, eye well healed. He seems to be very comfortable here, has settled
in to the routine--esp. in the evening when I let the dogs out for the last time. They all come into the
kitchen and Flash sits down with the rest to receive their treats--usually pieces of carrot or apple
ending up with a small cookie--, very low calorie snack. He also loves the walks/runs down on the
meadow and feels more self confident there, running sometimes along with Ludwig and Roxie rather
than sticking with me like a shadow as he did at first. He is more a shadow in the house and when I sit
on the couch he snuggles up with his head in my lap, craving love in return for his love. This morning it
was funny--he did not want to go out in the deep snow, but I pushed him down the ramp from the
deck to the yard and he did his business quickly and returned almost before he went out--I know,
that's not possible
12/7/03 Flash had his stitches out Friday and his ulcer is healed (the vet said he'd never had one take
so long). Flash is feeling friskier--the other day on our walk he ran with and chased Ludwig, my LabX,
longer and faster than he'd ever done before. He seems to feel a little more independent out on the
field and spends more time with the others instead of shadowing me so much. He is very protective of
the house and grounds, watches what goes on in the street and driveway and growls or barks when he
feels it necessary. He is very affectionate and along with Rocket wants me all to himself. He does
occasionally play with the others but also wants to take balls and toys from the others--you know, the
grass is always greener.....and I have to watch that as it is likely to lead to a fight. I think he would be
best off in a one-dog household. I also think he would be good with children; When I've had him at the
vets he is very interested in the crated cats but I'm not sure if it's a prey interest; he's fine with the few
small children he's met at the vet's. This is such a great dog that it's a shame he hasn't found his
forever home yet; perhaps by Christmas....
10/17/03 Flash is doing mostly very nicely. 2 exceptions: he tried to help Rocket finish his dinner, to
which Rocket took strong exception. I had the hardest time separating them--I now feed Flash all by
himself. Another time I came home and stuff was all over the floor--nothing serious. So for a few days
back to the crate--in fact today was the first day I left them all together and things were fine. Flash is
otherwise a good boy, very easy to get along with, very affectionate, loves to hike and run with the
other dogs, but frequently checking back with me. Tried to cut his toenails today--no good. I'll have
my daughter feed him treats while I try again tomorrow. Really this great sweet dog is ready for
adoption and will adapt very quickly to a new routine, altho he may demand his evening snack when
he comes in the house after his evening outing. He sits readily for his treat, has trouble waiting for the
O.K. to go to his food and in jumping out of the car, but I persist and he obliges. He is slightly less
pudgy, in fact looks great, fur is soft and silky. He is just waiting---
10/7/03 Flash came thru his physical with flying colors, heart worm and fecal negative etc. . He has
been great here, not provoking fights, but fighting briefly when my Roxie or Ludwig tried to show him
their prior rights. It's been generally peaceful. He has resisted the crate and frequently barks if placed
in it. I didn't feel the need for it, just separated Roxie and Ludwig in one room when I was out--this
worked fine until one day I came home and the floor was littered with my canning jars, plastic bags
ripped up and at least one box of surejell consumed. So Flash has been crated when I leave since.
Altho the vet didn't feel Flash had a real problem with weakness in his hind quarters I do think it's
strange that he can't get on the bed, altho he does try. He can get in the RAV4 if he takes a running
jump which isn't really possible in the bedroom. I s'pose this could be considered an asset, but--? He
loves to play with a large ball and also the smaller toys, but doesn't really play with the others. He is
kind of a velcro boy, staying close to me in the house and checking out with me frequently when he
runs off a little ways when we are on walks. This dog will make some family very happy. Will try and
take some of the avoir-du-pois off until then.
10/3/03 Flash is a great dog, as good as he is handsome. He bonds quickly is very responsive. He's
learning to sit and wait until released to get his dinner, to get out of the car. I was worried that with
children he might jump too much, but he was only doing it the first day or two, is learning quickly to not
do it. Unfortunately don't know any small children, but judging by a brief encounter with one at the
vet's I'm sure he'd be fine. If I didn't already have two dogs of my own and one permanent foster I
would sure be tempted with this one. More later. Did I forget something? Actually he is ready to go
anytime. He will make a welcome addition to any family of several or even for one person.
Flash arrived Saturday. Flash is a nice flashy brindle bot with cropped ears and a docked tail. He is
friendly and affectionate, bonds quickly, and is house broken. He is ok alone in the house, however,
since he is still new here, I don't leave him alone with the other dogs.he is a bit too interested in smaller
animals for comfort, and probably would be the same way with cats. He likes kids, but will jump up
to greet them, so probably small children would not be best. If everything checks out at the vet's he
would be ready for adoption really soon...let us know if this classic looking boxer would be the right
companion for you!
