UPDATE 7/22/06 - So, this is the first update for Duke, has been just about 8 months w/ us so far. After picking him
up (he'd jumped straight into the car, no hesitation, thought he was going on a short trip down the road), he began
to realize he was leaving the other two foster dog's behind. Of course, this depressed him to some extent (as well
as the foster family; their two boxer's accepted Duke right into the pack). Suffice it to say, he was nervous that first
week.
Every noise was worth a bark (because it was scary of course). The heater. The refrigerator. The neighbors. The
neighbor's child. The cars outside. People walking by.... He eventually got familiar with city noises (as much as you
can call Portland, ME a city). Next task at hand, his separation anxiety. He was not a fan of the fact that we left
sometimes to do this 'work thing'. So for about the first month, he went thru mild separation anxiety...and ate a
pumpkin (stem included), our apartment lease, a book, his toys (good boy), paper towels, a headlamp, a water
filter, a remote, and some winter crampon thingys. Yes, we finally clued into this, elevated all potential 'Duke toys'
and gave him just particular rooms to live in while we were gone. This went from crate to full room, full room to
multiple rooms, and recently (within month or so) we were able to give him full run of the house without incident.
We've been keeping up with his meds and he has quickly become friends w/ Cape Vet Clinic. We discovered early
on he has some severe allergies and have been working w/ Dr. Robinson to keep him as comfortable as
possible. This said, it doesn't seem to inhibit his enjoyment of regular daily life.
As this is our first boxer, we've had a blast having such an active dog around the house. Duke came out of his shell
over those first couple months. He's outgoing yet chill, gets along w/ all dogs and people. He loves our contact and
quickly became accustomed to using the middle seat on the couch (right...between...Dee and I). Duke's also
learned to become a gentleman when guests first walk in the door (but we can tell it takes *a lot* to fight the urge
to jump all over them, give'em the old Boxer hello we've all heard about). He kidney beans so hard when either of
us walk in the front door that he does get stuck in a complete U for what seems like minutes. Duke's favorite
activity: anything involving play...whether this be a stick, a Frisbee, a tennis ball, a basketball, a football...really,
anything that ends in -ball. Duke's most vaunted toy: cheap, empty 2 liter plastic bottle. That plastic 'crunching'
sound would keep him going for hrs if only the bottles lasted that long.
We also discovered that a Chuck-It was akin to crack for Duke (it's like a stick and ball rolled into one). However,
he's learned not to catapult himself (literally) into the person holding one of these. He's extremely smart and w/
consistent training has earned his way into the functioning Chuck-It crowd. Other training notables: all basics
learned (sit, stay, come) plus 'heel' as well (one hell of a thing for Boxer's considering their playful nature). We also
recently, given summer's warmth, taught Duke how to swim. This was one of his biggest accomplishments thus
far, and he came out of the water after that first swim on his own shaking w/ excitement (his tail was pointing so
high we thought it would break off). If you see us on the East End Beach, most likely he's that brindle Boxer
swimming towards his ball or Oscar if he's reached the ball first.
Duke's been on plenty of adventures with us as well having been all over New England and even destinations
beyond. He saw what we think was his first snow up in Vermont and couldn't stop running down the hill after
anyone on sleds, probably wanting to be a part of the huge white dustball that erupted in the attempt at slowing
down. But, he kept bounding all over the place. With spring, we took him into New York City proper and he couldn't
figure out what the big horses were in Central Park...I think he still thinks they were some sort of massive dog. He
loved camping w/ us in the White Mtns as well as Acadia...the notion of sleeping together in the tent is like a child
finally understanding free candy on Halloween. However, his biggest journey thus far has been one most dogs
probably don't make...a flight across the US. We were concerned about his well-being in that Boxers typically have
a harder time with breathing given their shorter snouts. This, of course, becomes a concern in flying. However, we
landed in San Francisco without incident and without any accidents in his kennel. Duke loved the West Coast as
much as we enjoyed reuniting w/ old friends and family, and everyone there was excited to meet him (even Arnold,
my family's now older lab/rottweiler). The flight back was as painless as the flight there. If anyone is ever hesitant
about flying w/ their boxer, feel free to contact us at any time.
At the end of the day, he just enjoys being w/ people and believes he's just another person chilling on the couch.
We're really lucky to have brought such an amazing guy into our house.  Many thanks so Second Chance Boxer for
this!

- Well Duke came home with me today and he is such a good boy. Skinny but I will work on that. Dakota
and Guinness loved him immediatly. I had all 3 of them sharing a loveseat with me within a few hours. I was
shocked on how fast the 3 of them became friends. No tension at all. Duke is adjusting and enjoys walking around
the house smelling everything. Stay tuned for more info...
