UPDATE 2/8/06 - Figured it was time to send in an update for my Dudley. He has had many changes take place in
the last few months. The biggest change was that we both lost our beloved Bailey. Dudley had a difficult time with
loosing his brother and got quite depressed and very insecure for quite awhile. He became extremely jumpy at
just everything; even noises he had been used to hearing everyday like the furnace turning on would send him into
a frenzy. He ended up biting my neighbor two days after Bailey was gone. Just became very insecure in the world
he had started enjoying so much. Slowly I started seeing him get a little more secure again and now he is just
about back to his normal self. He is a great boxer boy. My Dudley Doodle brings a smile to your face with all his
little antics. Little things like every time he goes out to go pee, he just has to bring a toy to the back slider. He now
knows that I do not want him to bring it out with him, but he still brings it and will drop it just before going out. I
have often thought that all I need to do is move his basket over by the door and I will have a boxer who picks up his
toys everyday. At the end of each day, I bring the armload of toys back to his basket to start all over again the next
day. He is now allowing me to clip his nails. Well… kinda.. I can get a few then he gets a little frustrated with me
so we let it go. It will be nice that he will no longer need to be sedated to have them trimmed. We still keep the
clippers on the table in the hopes that someday we might be able to do all of them at once instead of a few here
and a few more there. Still loves to get his face washed and romps around with his “Piggy. He has added
to his collection of favorites a bunny that has spots just like him and a little ball with bumps that Bailey had brought
upstairs quite a while ago to keep for his very own and just was found again recently. Dudley is doing better at
knocks at the door. He still will race towards the door to let me know someone is there, but I can now at least get
to the door without being mauled and if it is someone Dudley knows then I will open it a crack and Dudley will get
his wiggle in gear to greet his friend. He is getting much better about his jumping. I have told everybody that letting
Dudley jump on you is a huge no-no… He isn’t attacking the window anymore when visitors come by and is
happy to just peek out with maybe a few barks to let me know someone is there. He has started looking at me
when something upsets him and I’m encouraging him to do this. Dudley absolutely loves stuffed marrow
bones. Actually, he gets quite frustrated with me sometimes in the morning when I’m getting ready for work.
He will feel I have had enough time and go stand in his crate waiting for me to leave. He is anticipating his stuffed
marrow bone I give him each morning. Sometimes he gets quite indignant about it if I am not quick about leaving
and he will do his 3 steps back and whine to get me in gear. I find I am never late for work; he is very helpful in
getting me out the door each morning. Course when I return from work he is full of wiggles and just must bring
that empty marrow bone out of his crate before he leaves to bring it out in the kitchen for me to hopefully stuff again
for him. Dudley is very lovable and although I don’t let him sleep on the bed at night as soon as the alarm
goes off in the morning I wake up to a THUMP as he jumps up to snuggle in the morning. I have found it
preferable over his 3 steps back and whining for me to jump out of bed and go downstairs. He gets up a lot
quicker than I do in the mornings. Dudley is anxiously waiting for the weather to get warmer. He would prefer to
stay outside longer to race around the yard and play with his “outdoor toys and will look outside each day
hoping today will be the day when he can go outside and be warm enough to race around longer. For the last
month we have been practicing what his brother Bailey had begun teaching him on how to help mom with the
fosters. We have had a little senior gal joining us the past month or so. At first, Dudley was not very pleased about
our little visitor. I was disappointed because he had gotten along so well with Bailey and I thought it would take his
mind off things and would provide a good playmate for him. It took him several weeks to accept her. Dudley
remains quite dominant when allowed to. Things are going much better now and he is starting to listen to me
better. He still tends to want to “take charge but is learning that I will deal with things in the house. They
now are allowed to go out and play or both be in the same house without having to be separated. I have even
seen them both drinking from the same bowl of water on occasion, but I am still careful when they both are out and
about together. Dudley also enjoys going to visit with me. He is getting better at it and I think it is teaching him that
he can trust that I will always bring him home again. He absolutely loves to ride in the car and although I will never
be able to leave him out on Bailey’s old run (his fear aggression issues and it is in the front yard which would
be too much for Dudley to deal with), Dudley loves to go in the garage with me and poke around. He is wondering
why we have another house with dog bowls and couches and such. I think he likes to go out there to see if maybe
Bailey came back. We both miss Bailey very much. So….. Dudley is doing very well. Spring seems like a good
time to get him into a class. By then I am hoping we will be able to deal with the class as opposed to dealing as
much with his fears. I think he will do very well. Dudley has been an excellent addition and is loved very very much.
UPDATE 11/29/05 - I just have to tell you about Dudley's new friend. The boys have so many toys that quite a while
ago I decided to split them up into 3 sets. I periodically wash the set that is out and just replace them with a new
set and put away that washed set for later. It is always just so exciting for the boys to go investigate on the "new"
things in their basket and scattered around their beds and such. Well, within the set I just recently put back into
their lives, was a little pink, velvet pig with long arms and long legs and a squeaker in his tummy. The pig was just
one of the newer toys that had been picked up a few months ago. It was a favorite among some fosters, but
nothing too special, or at least I had thought. I had put it away for a later date just before Dudley came to live with
us. I did the usual of picking up the old toys and sending them off to the washing machine and getting out the new
set and scattering them in the basket and various beds and such so the boys could go investigate. We had the
usual toys flipping up in the air and frantic searching of the basket to see what was new. The smushing of toys in
each others faces, tugging, play bows and no that can't go outside, well I suppose that one can, definitely not that
one, OKAY GUYS SETTLE DOWN, lets go outside and play and burn off some of that boxer energy your working
up. Then Dudley comes upon the pig. Well!!! It was love at first sight. He was flipping it up and racing around and
squeaking it and just really seemed to be enjoying himself. I didn't think much of it at the time. Then I noticed that
wherever Dudley was he had this pig in tote. He has kept his "piggy" in tote for well over a week now. When he
goes out to eat "piggy" will go out and sit beside the bowl til Dudley has had enough, and then join Dudley in a nice
boxer nap on one of the dog beds. Dudley will do the typical 3 circles to find the "perfect" position to lay down and
then gently bring his new little "piggy" buddy next to him to put him in the "perf" place right under his muzzle. This is
the same boxer boy that usually shreds stuffed toys within 5 minutes of finding them. Even if he comes to lay with
me he will gently put "piggy" on me, then come up and put his muzzle on top of his "piggy". Afterall, "piggy's" are
very comfortable to lay your muzzle on you know. Then when waking up Dudley and his "piggy" will have a game of
fetch, then a game of how long will mom put up the the constant SQEEAKKK, SQEEAKKK, SQEEAKK before she
ships us outside to run around for a little peace and quiet. Dudley even insists on bringing his "piggy" for walks.
How embarrassing. Picture this BIG white with brown spotted boxer. Dudley is a big boy. He struts. So here we
are out for a walk, with a stuffed pig in his mouth. I thought he would loose interest and drop it and I would end up
carrying it, but NOPE he carries "piggy" wherever he goes. He does let me babysit "piggy" when he goes out to
play, but other than that it is a permanent attachment to Dudley's muzzle. So! We have yet another addition to our
crew. Maybe just a little pink "piggy" with long arms and long legs and a sqeaky in his tummy to most, but to
Dudley it is his new little friend who tags along wherever Dudley goes. Nothing comes between a boxer and his
"piggy"??
Dudley continues to be a very typical boxer boy and is getting along just great in his new home and is very much
loved by all. He gets along great with his older "Big" brother Bailey and Guss the cat. Typically, the three of them or
should I say 4 ("piggy") can be found taking boxer and cat and "piggy" naps in one of their beds or racing about
outside. Dudley appears to be a very happy boxer bum. He loves to go visiting or just for rides in the truck. He has
made a few new friends. We are knocking on different things around the house to get him to not panic at knocks
on the door. It is getting a little better. If there is a knock on the TV he now accepts it as not being that threatening.
We have clippers permanently on the table. Dudley is afraid to have his nails clipped. We are constantly giving
Dudley foot massages and putting the clippers on top of his feet. Getting ready to try to clip one of those nails
soon and see if he eats me?? He is gaining trust each day and appears happy as any boxer could be with a good
"piggy" friend. Dudley and his brother Bailey show signs of being very very good friends and love to play together,
eat together and sleep together. Very little signs of jealously between the two. Gus the cat is accepted as just
another "funny" looking boxer who sneezes a lot and has a longer nub. All is well with Dudley.
UPDATE 11/2/05 - Dudley is just fitting in wonderfully at the house. He is such a good boy and learning all the
time. He has so many new things that he just loves. I really think he is happy and I am so glad he is here. I'm
checking into a Reliable Rover class to take him to. It is the next class after Obedience and I think it is the one I'm
going to choose to attend with him. He oddley sometimes has trouble with focusing if there are other distractions?
I have found Dudley to be just a big lovable boxer bum who is just always full of wiggles. He has the softest ears
anywhere. We have finally finished up his ear infection meds and he ended up being accepting of me putting them
in there. We found a few interesting things out about Dudley in the process.
As you can imagine when a big boy like Dudley doesn't want you to put ear infection meds in his ears it tends to
get a tad messy. We discovered very early that Dudley just LIVES to have his face washed with a warm face cloth.
It is just way too funny. It also proved to be very helpful in other situations because when the boys (Dudley and his
"big" (older) brother Bailey) go out to play they end up sliming all over each other and so coming in to get their
faces washed has become the norm. The two of them play very hard. Racing all over the yard, doing body slams
and boxing and this one chasing that and that one chasing this..Dudley is one of the few boxers I have known that
actually brings back the ball when playing fetch. They just have a ball out there and are just getting closer and
closer each day.
I did get a little worried at one point with Dudley. He was out with his "big" brother Bailey (who comes up to his
chest); they were playing as usual and when they came in poor Dudley was limping on his hind right foot. Good
thing for warm face cloths. Had him laying down getting his face washed, which ends up in my lap during these
times. Well took advantage of the situation to look at his paw to see what was wrong as soon as he started
SNORING. Yup, warm face cloths put this boy right to sleep. He is really just a big mush face. Turned out that he
ripped one of his nails almost completely off and is doing much better now. I would have expected his "big"
brother Bailey to get hurt the way Dudley just towers over him. Bailey has now become quite attached to his "little"
younger brother Dudley. The two of them have been caught sharing a few dog beds around the house on several
occasions. Even Guss the cat likes Dudley.
Dudley also loves to go visiting. He is a perfect gentleman in the truck, even when sharing the back with his
brother. He just loves to go for rides. He has come with us to visit friends a few times now and is well behaved.
Dudley also likes taking walks. Although, it can be a test of patience getting him to sit long enough to put his leash
on him. He is getting it, but he gets all excited when that leash comes out. We have discovered that Dudley enjoys
wading in the pond across the street and sniffing out all the new and exciting things to be found. I think in the
summer Dudley will probably enjoy swimming on those hot summer days; an activity that his big brother Bailey
probably will not care to join with him.
I just adore this big boy and everything just seems very good with him. So glad I found him, or did he find me??
UPDATE 10/19/05 - I have been looking for a second boxer bum for quite awhile. Something about Dudley???? I
just somehow knew he was different and wanted him to stay on since day one and relentlessly pleaded and
begged. Dudley is doing just great and Bailey, and Guss and me just love him to pieces. He has made a few trips
to the vets office. He tested negative for Heartworm, but has a lot of fear with getting his nails trimmed and being
touched. He even gets scared if they want to listen to his heart. He did get nippy and made several warnings he
was not pleased, but by the end of his visit he was loving up to everybody there, even the three people moments
before he was nipping at. I wanted to have his ears checked because they seemed to be bothering him. We
ended up having to put a muzzle on him, but we had to take it off before he hurt himself, but were able to check his
heart (which he has a lot of) and also take blood for his heartworm test. It took three of us, with him muzzled to
accomplish this. He gets very upset, and scared. So. he went back this past Monday and he had to be sedated to
have his nails trimmed and ears looked at. He just gets so scared. He has fear aggression that we are trying to
deal with to help him to hopefully turn this around. It will take awhile but we have plenty of time to try to help him get
over some of these things and we will just be careful with him ..always. He is such a special boxer boy. Turned
out he does have an ear infection so his ears were cleaned out while he was snoozing and the vets office trimmed
his nails that were quite long. It was better to do it that way so not to just feed into his fear and make him all the
more fearful the next time. He will need to be sedated in the future for this and so we will be working closely with
his vet to help him with this. So. now just a few drops twice a day with a BUNCH of hot dogs to get that ear
infection healed up. It is kinda like a game. I temp him with the piece of hot dog that he really really wants, the
minute that bottle comes around he backs way up.. We do that for quite awhile til I'm feeling that I got some of it in
both his ears. He is not please about it, but so far I think it is getting in there. He has the most adorable, softest
ears. They are so long and I just love petting them. We are also learning that mom can touch his feet and it is
okay. We are going to start leaving the clippers out in plain view also so he can see they won't just jump out and
get him. He is a very curious guy but never gets into anything he isn't supposed to. Well, except he drank my cup
of tea one day, but that's okay, just shows he also has good taste so I just made another cup for myself. He loves
to sleep upstairs at night. If I go to bed too late and he gets tired he will go to the stairs and give a little whine, then
run over to me and give a little whine, then back to the stairs to tell me it is time for bed and we should all go
upstairs and go to sleep. He has a lot of character and is such a handsome young boy. He has very very odd
coloring for a boxer, but he is all boxer. He has a great left. He gets along with Bailey very well. Bailey was kinda
afraid of him in the beginning but they are getting along very well now and do a lot of very funny things. They play
very very rough, but if I get too nervous I just speak up and they both settle down a bit and come over for hugs.
Bailey really is very vocal in his play and sometimes it unnerves me a bit. So Bailey is teaching Dudley how to be a
good SCBR Foster Boxer Helper and Dudley in turn is showing Bailey how to play tug with his big long rope toy.
They are both very patient with each other. They share their breakfast and supper. Bailey will go take a few bites,
step aside, Dudley will take a few bites, step away, then Bailey, then Dudley. There are more than just that bowl of
the same food. This is how they choose to work this. Very strange. If Gus is there he doesn't share with either
one of them so I guess we know who really is the boss. Water is a free for all, with both muzzles in there at the
same time. Playing is hard and makes a boxer thirsty. Dudley is very much into toys. He has eaten 5 or 6 so far.
He just loves toys. We will be investing in toys that are a little tougher in the future. He also absolutely goes crazy
for stuffed marrow bones. Carries them around with him, if there isn't a toy already in there. We want him to really
enjoy being in his crate while I'm at work so he now only gets the stuffed marrow bones in his crate when I'm
away. He gets his other treats wherever and whenever. Hot dogs are for ear meds time and when company
comes. He gets scared when somebody comes to the house. He seems to settle down about 5 minutes later,
but we will also be working on this. He really is just a big lovable boy. He loves to snuggle, is respectful that there
are others in the house and appears to be settling in quite nicely. We will be looking into what kind of class Dudley
would like to take to help with further bonding and confidence. He loves to go in the truck and rides very nicely.
Loves to see the sights. Looking forward to bringing him to some of the "pet friendly" stores in my area to see how
he does. He has gone visiting with me and Bailey and was very well behaved except after awhile he did want to go
home and was getting a little impatient with me but he did fine and was happy to get home. He will get to
understand we will always go home as he goes out galavanting more often. One thing about him that I have
noticed is he absolutely hates the rain. Have to boot him right out that door or he will just keep crying to go out then
not go as soon as he realizes it is still raining. If I get him out then shut the door so he can't come back in, he
knows he is to do his business and then the door will be opened back up for him to come back in. We have plenty
of work ahead of us, but that is to be expected. We all love our little giant boxer boy and we think the feeling is
mutual. What a great addition.
10/10/05 - Dudley has been adopted!
