UPDATE 10/7/05 - Hi, all continues to be great with our baby boy! He started obedience classes last
night and of course he thought that was just the best- dogs, dogs everywhere! We started practicing
calling them to us- we stood in the middle of the gym one at a time and called our dogs- most dogs
bounded into their parents arms....but our little social butterfly started running toward me, and then
took an abrupt detour straight to a golden retriever puppy...(let's play!)-It was too funny. Obviously
we'll have to work on keeping his attention! He is a smart cookie, and he does want to be a good boy,
but things just get so EXCITING for a teenage boxer, you know? Class will do us all good (I need to
polish up my alpha dog skills- I know at times the pups think I am a litter mate!) He is of course
hysterically funny,too- I was taking a bath the other night (I guess it was the first time since we have
had him, because he found it fascinating that I was IN the tub!)- he kept running into the bathroom and
then running back out; at one point he attempted to drink the water. Then he disappeared again and
returned with his rope bone- which he immediately threw INTO the tub! EWWW! I took it out and
gave it back to him, and he tossed it in again. He has the CUTEST face, and even thought I was trying
to relax and have a nice CLEAN bath, I couldn't help but laugh at his ability to turn it into a game! His
health has continued to be perfect, and he just is as happy as a bouncy boxer can be. So are we. We
can't imagine our lives without him, and Gretchen is sooooooo happy with her little brother. So, we'll
talk to you in a month!
UPDATE 9/5/05 - Hello all, Dancer here. I can't believe it has been a month since I adopted my new
family! Things are just great here for a young guy like me- plenty of doggie action! Mom is a pet sitter
and dog walker, so there are always lots of other pups to play with, walks to be had, rope toys to play
tug of war with... plus I have my very own sister, Gretchen (a pretty girl boxer.) Every day dad walks
with us on a trail from our property to the Androscoggin River. We act like complete LUNATICS
running through the tall grass in the field on the way there! Gretchen does her best 'Tigger' impression
and bounces high above the grass! We like to stand on the river's edge and take in the view, but me &
Gretch don't like to get into water that is over our heads. I also have a HUGE furry brother, Cooper,
that I hear is supposed to be a cat, but I'm not sure. He acts like us dogs, and always sneakily falls in
line with us when we are going outside.(He is supposed to stay inside.) He's always where the action
is, just like me, so I think my parents are wrong...I think he is a dog. My other sister,Olivia, is definitely
a CAT- a SCAREDY cat! She hides from me, and she does a good job until she hisses from under the
bed so I know where she is!-I really don't pay her much attention, I prefer those who LIKE me.
Another AWESOME thing is that my foster mom lives nearby! She is away this week and my mom
has been caring for the doghouse gang- my extended family. So, I have been going over to see my
buddies Magoo, Bubba, Annabelle, Kelli & Kabuki! What more could I ask for?! I sure got lucky- I
have soooo many people and puppies that love me! (But of course I DESERVE it! I am smart, funny,
and so cute that my mom can't stop squeezing me and kissing my face!) So, I am a happy boy. Thank
you for caring enough to take me in and get me healthy so I could make my forever family complete.
(-P.S. from his mom: Dancer's health has remained wonderful- no diarrhea, and we have kept
him on his diet of nutro and home cooking. We will be signing up for obedience training class
tomorrow, and will be making an appointment for a checkup with Dr. Matt this week to evaluate his
progress. We are madly, madly in love with this little dumpling!) Talk to you in a month...
UPDATE 8/6/05 - Hello, here we are a week after welcoming beautiful Dancer into our family, and
we just couldn't be more in love with this boy! Thanks to the WONDERFUL loving care he has had
with his foster mom, he is a self confident, well socialized, healthy guy, and we are so thankful for
boxer rescue! It is such a wonderful thing! He is a bouncing teenage boy, just what we were looking
for to keep our five year old female boxer, Gretchen, on her toes! They have really hit it off- with the
exception of a little 'sibling rivalry'- (they still haven't decided who is the rightful owner of the stuffed
giraffe and squeaky hippo...) He has made friends with our 'cat-dog' (cat who believes he is a dog),
Cooper, and generally settled in so much more easily than we expected! I am a dog walker and pet
sitter, so we have lots of dogs in our lives, and Dancer has made friends with everyone he has met. He
gets to come along on some of my regular walks, which is per
fect, since a tired puppy is a good puppy. We will certainly continue to grow more in love with our new
son, but in the meantime, I want to say to all prospective boxer parents: adopt through second chance
boxer rescue- these people LOVE these dogs, and through fostering them, they learn all of thier wants,
needs and quirks, so you know before your new family member arrives. We purchased our first boxer
through a breeder, and while she is the love of our lives, it just feels so wonderful to give a sweet boxer
a 'second chance'- and that is what we will continue to do every time we add another member to our
family. We thank you, and Dancer thanks you!!! Talk to you in a month...
7/30/05 - Dancer has been adopted!!!!
7/20/05 Hi everyone, Dancer here. Mom tells me that we are going to the BRAD (Boxer Rescue
Awareness Day) in Brunswick at PetQuarters on Saturday, July 23rd. That is exciting, because I love
to meet new people and maybe my forever family will be there. Dr Matt gave me some new medicine
which is really
helping and I am getting better by the day. I no longer have to go out at all hours of the day and night
and my appetite has settled down a bit also so now I don't have to eat so much. Things at the
Doghouse are great. We get to run in the meadow a couple of times each day and I love to chase the
ball and bring it back to Mom who just keeps throwing it again and again. Another very favorite thing is
the pond next to the house which is becoming very muddy and a great mud hole in the meadow, for
which I have to get in line because the rest of the pack likes to flop in it also and it is not very large.
My foster sister Annabelle likes to put her face in the mud (she is a white boxer) and Bubba the Boston
just lies down and takes a rest. Summer is fun. Hope to see you Saturday, Love Dancer
6/9/05 - It's has been awhile since I wrote, because I have been very, very busy. Playing fetch the ball,
tug a rope with Magoo and Annabelle and there are also footprints to be left in the newly planted
garden and of course generally just being out and about. Mom takes us for walks in the Meadow and
with my tennis ball she really wears a poor young Boxer out. When we head back we pass a
wonderful pond where we wade in a cool off. Mom tries to time it so we are not in the pond the same
time as the neighborhood children, because she says we would really make a lot of splashes (there are
so many kids I would not know who to play with first). I think it would be fun, and perhaps I can figure
out a way to open the gate (I learned how to open the front door). But Mom is pretty savvy and I
don't know if I can figure it out. It is then great to come back to the yard, get a nice long drink and
zonk out on the cool floor or comfy couch. I still love to eat and Mom makes me a nice breakfast with
kibble, yogurt and pumpkin. Dinner is the same as the rest of the gang and even though I still have the
runs, I never have them in the house and only when I am stressed out do things seem to get a little
uncomfortable for me. The doggie door allows me to be a responsible canine and that is just the best. I
am still looking for my forever home and would really like some younger companions. Both canine and
human. Everyone here tends to get a little frustrated with my "boxer puppy energy". They do love me,
but have been there and done that and now just want to take a nap.
Cheers, Dancer
4/14/05 - Hi all, it has been a while, but spring is here (mud season Mom calls it) and going for walks
and playing in the meadow with Magoo and Annabelle is just the best. It has been a busy time, as
Cajun visited for a bit, and then Boomer came and he was just the best playmate a young and active
boy like me could have. Mom had company also as her family came to visit with the new baby.
Strange sounds babies make!!!!! But back to me, I just love to eat, play, eat, and play some more.
And occasionally take a nap with the rest of the pack. Magoo and I play tug a rope a lot and I like to
chase balls and squeaky things. Still hoping for my forever family to come along, and once you meet
me you will fall in love. All I need is a doggie door and a fenced area so that I can go out when I have
go potty. I love to cuddle and I am very good about not messing up in the house (except for the
occasional box of tissues or roll of toilet paper).
1/12/05 Though Dancer still has some GI problems, everyone is hard pressed to notice unless they're
looking. With an appetite of a teenager, Dancer has put on muscle, now a sleek looking, energetic
dog. The other day, I took him on a ski through the woods, with him bounding ahead, breaking trail,
running back when I was not going quick enough, only to bound ahead again. If you fancy a dog to
play catch with, or take on runs, Dancer is the one. Besides, energetic, Dancer is quite affectionate,
curling up on the bed or one's lap, though if you don't fancy the attention, he'll leave when told, most of
the time. A great dog for those who are into outdoor sports!
12/11/04 Hi all, Dancer here. Just to update everyone, I mastered the DogDoor thing within days and
that really helps. Because the Vet still hasn't really figured out what is up with my digestion and I have
to go potty often and quick. Even in the middle of the night. Anyway, Mom has been trying different
diets for me. Cooking rice, potatoes, hamburger, vegetables, etc. Now we are trying "Hill's
prescription diet" and will see how that goes. I was doing rather well for several weeks and now I feel
poorly again. Mom can tell by the way I curl up and just try to stay quiet. Hope she gets a recipe that
agrees with me soon, she is looking for an easy one to make as she is going to visit for awhile and other
people are going to do the cooking. I really need to gain a couple of lbs. Any suggestions, Boxer
lovers? On the behavior end, I am wonderful. Listen well, sit when asked. Get excited whenever
anyone comes in the door. Love to cuddle, like the siblings, even the Pekingese, although he tells me
he is NOT a toy to play with. All in all live is pretty good here at the Doghouse. Happy Holidays
everyone, be safe and be well.
11/11/04 Dancer arrived at the Doghouse severely emaciated and with copious bloody diarrhea.
Despite his condition he settled right in with the rest of the pack and made himself at home. He is the
most charming little guy and gives lots and lots of boxer kisses and wiggles, and loves cuddling. We
have visited the Vet and Dancer has been put on several meds to determine what his diagnosis may be.
He is now on a special diet of rice and turkey broth with yogurt and gets fed five times a day which he
really likes. He seems to be able to keep that recipe down so we are hopeful. He sleeps in his crate at
night and whenever no one is at home and that seems to work out. So everyone, think good thoughts
and say lots of prayers for this wonderful little boxer and hopefully we can get him on the road to
recovery and even better find him his forever home.
The Doghouse Gang.
