CHAS

UPDATE 6/30/07 -   Chas and Daisy are doing great! They are such a fantastic part of our
family!!  We are actually in the process of clearing and leveling 1 1/2 acres of land so that they
have more room to run and play with the kids.  Daisy loves mud.  She takes any opportunity that
she can to change from an all white dog to an all brown dog.  Chas tip toes through the mud
because he doesn't like to get dirty, but he dives right in if there's a chance to swim.  He loves
swimming!  We take them out on our boat often and they just love it.  We are actually having
Chas checked for thryoid problems now.  He is on lamb and rice and less than the
recommended amount, plus he gets absolutely NO table scraps and he's still overweight.  He
developed a black spot on his back and the hair started falling out.  That's what alerted us to
the thryoid signs.  So we'll know in a few days.  Meanwhile, we'll enjoy the cooler summer days
in NY state and playing with the dogs.

UPDATE 10/21/06 - Well, this update on Chas is a few weeks late but Chas is doing fantastic.
Right now he's outside wallowing in the mud and dirt with his favorite boxer buddy, Daisy.  He
get's lots of exercise with her and they are truely best buds!!  Chas has become such an
amazing part of our lives.  He wakes the kids up on time with slurpie kisses.  Then he snuggles
them on the couch until it's time for them to get dressed.  He is such a sweet and suprisingly
calm dog.  We just love him to pieces!!  He is a perfect fit for our family.

UPDATE 6/4/06 - Well, I just finished updating the new puppy, Daisy and so I figured that I would
update Chas as well.  He is being such a good boy.  We just love him and his silly personality so
much.  He is the most gentle dog I think I've ever been around!  He's less than two years old and
knows that he has to take it easy around the kids and the puppy.  He lets the puppy chew him to
bits and he just keeps playing.  When Daisy gets tired and settles down, Chas goes to get her
favorite toy to try to temp her into continue the playing.  If she is too tired, then he just lays
down and she immediately goes over and snuggles in.  He goes everywhere with us.  He loves to
ride in the car... though as it gets hotter out he'll have to do less and less of that.  We take him
to a baseball field that is totally fenced in and we let him run and run and run!  However, seeing
that it's little league season, he hasn't been able to do that much lately.  So the puppy has been
a good distraction for him.  He is GREAT in his crate now and goes in with no trouble at all.  NO
slobber mess to clean up when we get home anymore.  He truely is the world's GREATEST dog!!

UPDATE 11/30/05 - Chas is doing great!  He has just completed is first long road trip and family
gathering.  We took him out to my Dad's house for Thanksgiving.  He loved the ride (of course)
and had a lot of fun running in my Dad's fensed in back yard. However, Chas really only does
well on a lamb & rice diet.  My dad felt sorry for Chas not getting any turkey dinner... so he gave
him a large bowl full of turkey scraps and fat.  Well that didn't agree with Chas and the poor guy
had diarrhea for the next day and a half!  We didn't realize he had a potty issue until we were
half way home.  Poor chas was really restless in the back and we couldn't figure it out.  We
finally stopped and he few out of the back to go potty.  He was so considerate not to go in the
car!  Since then it's been back to routine as usual.  He's doing great at doggie obedience class
and was told he's improving every week.  I have a couple concerns though... I've tried to
contact Second Chance several times to find out how  I give notice of being in a dog obedience
class.  I've also requested vaccination records (in order to stay in dog obedience class).  Only
sadly, I have not heard from anyone.  Could someone please contact me.  Chas and I would love
the help.  THanks

UPDATE 11/1/05 - We just wanted to update everyone on Chas.  He has truely become our third
child!  He gets up on the couch 1st thing in the morning and tries to laydown on both kids at the
same time to 'snuggle' them.  He's been really great about getting to know his boundaries
outside.  We got brave about a week ago and tried letting him off the leash.  I must say, he has
got to be the fastest dog I've ever seen!!  But the great news is that so far, he listens great and
always comes back when he is called.  We are going to start working with him and our invisible
fense soon.  We were really hoping to have him in an obedience class before that but it's been
really tough finding a class.  As of now we are scheduled to start with a class as soon as the
instructor is able to fill it up.  Chas is very excited to meet other doggies.  He has become
friends with another boxer at our son's soccer games.  They get along wonderfully.  The other
AMAZING news is that Chas now has free reign of our home! To say that he hated the crate
would be a gross understatement!  He even found several ways to escape (we're thinking of
changing his name to Hudini-ha!). Well, when we came home one night it was obvious that he's
been out of the crate for some time, and there was NO destruction.  This was completely
amazing because we did not puppy proof the counters before leaving-seeing that he was safely
'locked' into his crate.  He not only did not chew anything he wasn't supposed to but he also left
an apple pie, a loaf of bread, a box of doggie bones, and a bag of pretzels on the counter
uneaten!  So now, we puppy proof just in case but he has free run of the house.  He's been so
much less stressed when we leave... though we still get those sad Chas eyes.

UPDATE 10/13/05 -  Chas is still incredibly wonderful!  He has been wormed so hopefully he has
been rid of all his parasites.  Poor dog has been looking all over the yard for the ark since it has
done nothing but rain since he's been here.  He is so funny.  He pretends to be big and tough
when we play or if he hears a knock at the door but he is such a chicken in a puppy costume!
We say his bark and play growl sound more like indigestion than the attack call of a fearless
boxer.  He is completely scared of the cable (run) that we have hooked up for him (until he get's
trained for the invisible fense).  Everytime the pully moves and makes a sound he tucks his
wagging stub tight to his bottom and jumps back.  Just the other night, my daughter was having
a hard time sleeping and we went upstairs to comfort her.  We we came back into the bedroom
where Chas was sound asleep on the bed... Chas must have thought the devil himself had come
to take him away because he jumped a foot up, growled, barked once in a high pitch squeek
and tore out of the bedroom.  As soon as he ran past us he must have realized who we were and
the tail/butt wagging started up.  He ran right over and started wiggling and doggy talking as if
to say, "oops, you guys didn't see that scaredy doggy did ya??"  So for now, he spends most of
his time being hugged and kissed by our two kids or sleeping on whatever piece of furnature he
can lay down on.  We just love him so much!!

UPDATE 10/9/05 - I know that I am extremely early for this update and I will update again at one
week.  But we just HAD to let you know that Chas is the best puppy that we've ever seen!! He
has a wonderful ride home... just stared out the window, kissed the kids a bit, and settled down
for a 2 hour trip.  He sleeps great at night on his doggy bed beside our bed.  At about 7am he
jumps up on the bed for about a 20 minute snuggle before the kids get up.  As soon as he hears
them stir he heads up the stairs and give them good morning kisses!  Which they love of course.
I can't even begin to tell you how amazing he is with the kids!!!!!!!  They smother him all the
time (hugs, kisses, playing soccer, playing fetch, etc.) and he is just so gentle.  He seems to
just know that they could be knocked over so he is extra cautious with them.  He was fantastic
for his doggy bath in our jacuzzi tub and had a puppy race all over the house afterwards.  He
has been walking on a leash like a perfect gentleman and never pulls... ok, never pulls as long
as there isn't a chipmunk to chase nearby :).  He does appear to have worms as we are seeing
segments in his poop so we are taking him into the vet.'s sometime next week (just for an
overall checkup and parasite treatment).  We are currently in search of an obedience class that
will hopefully be starting soon somewhere locally but haven't found anything yet.  Maybe the
folks at the vet. clinic will know of one. Anyway, Chas is absolutely amazing!!!!!  We just can't
thank Second Chance and all the people involved for helping us find him.  We'll write again soon!

10/6/05 - Chas has been adopted!

9/20/05 - Chas wants to know why no one wants to love him? He is cute, loving, cuddly and smart. He is also
carefree, outgoing, and can run really, really fast!! He is learning to sit, stay, wait, come, off, and crate. He is learning
not to pull on a leash. but still has a ways to go. He loves other dogs, but hates cats though, so if there are cats in
your life, he won't be the dog for you. He is still not completely housebroken, but sometimes this is harder for for an
older puppy to learn than a young one. He is a wonderful companion with enough elan for everyone in your family!
Won't you please be the one to love him?

8/4/05 - Well, apparently JR was being too, “extra nice to Chas and was licking his booboos for him (he has
an “e collar on) and we had a nice trip to the vets today to re-glue his incisions!! Now, I have to keep JR
away from him, and he has to wear that “wonderful collar for a few more days (my legs are already covered
with little black and blues from the thing).  He is perking up a lot though and starting to act like a boxer puppy again.

8/2/05 - Poor Chas, he had such a time with his surgery. He had two incisions, one for the regular neuter and one,
longer one for the “get away, so in effect he was spayed and neutered on the same day. He has been very
quiet and sleepy.  Both Toby and JR feel sorry for him and are being “extra niceâ€.

8/1/05 - Chas has gone into the vets today to have his tests and to be neutered, this will be a longer operation for
him as he has a retracted testicle and will require internal surgery. He will be coming home in an Elizabethan collar
and will need to stay quiet for a few days.  This is no small challenge for his foster mother, as 9 month olds donâ
€™t particularly get the idea of “quietâ€.

7/30/05 -  Chas has been introduced to the resident boxers and they are doing fairly well, he wants, of course, to
play all the time and  while Toby is happy to, JR, would prefer to be left alone. (too much energy in this heat for the
old boy) Chas walks well on a leash,  comes when called, and sits for treats. He is learning  â€œoffâ€ and
starting to settle into the routine here. He has been having a few accidents  in the house, and has had a slight case
of the runs, both to be expected of a young dog who has changed circumstances three times in one month.  Chasâ
€™s ears are a hoot! They are quite large and they flop all over when he runs or plays, sometimes when they are
forward on his head they cross each other!! I will try to get a photo of this for you. He has such a cute face and he is
such a “happy boy, it’s hard to be upset with his antics or “slips (like thinking your boots make a
great weapon to throw at Toby or “trash diving for good smells.)

7/28/05 -  The In and Out Inn has a new guest. His name is “Chasâ€ and  he is 9 months old. A fancy fawn
with a fairly long dock and the biggest natural ears, he is adorable.  Apparently he was being left outside tied up for
long periods of time. He was rescued  about 3 weeks ago by a nice family in western NY but, he had a real issue
with their three kittens. They asked  SCBR to find him a home where he could be happy and their kittens could be
safe.   He is all puppy, and has more energy than that pink drummer bunny we see so often.   More to come as he
settles in.
