UPDATE 4/9/06 - Cain has been doing wonderfully since we adopted him in October. Previous attempts to
update his page have been unsuccessful, so I will try to recall as many details as I can remember. The first few
days were a bit difficult as both Jonah and Stella needed to adjust to their new brother. Cain seemed fine with
his new surroundings and took to me instantly. After a few expected fights and growls the group established
their order and all is going great! It is doggie wrestling at our house and it is necessary to brace yourself should
the everyone run from room to room chasing each other. Cain displayed some separation anxiety issues and
even chewed some of our wooden furniture in the process. We learned quickly to crate him whenever he left the
house, even for very short periods of time. As time passes we test his anxiety issue by leaving him for a few
moments here and there and he has done quite well, but we don't trust him to stay out much longer than an hour
at a time should we leave the house. Luckily, Cain is great about going into the crate and offers no resistance.
Our nephews love Cain and he allows our year old nephew to crawl all over him and play with his ears. Cain
does "pretend" to be tough when other dogs come near; barking and growling is his favorite behavior. However,
once the dogs are near him he instantly stops and walks right over to them and tries to play. Cain did attend a
BRAD a little while ago and did quite well, I thought, being that the location was unfamiliar and so were the
visitors to the store.
He is quite a character to say the least and keeps us completely amused! I have found through experience that
coffee is not to be left unattended in the house. Now neither Jonah or Stella have the slightest interest, but Cain
will actually try to drink the coffee from the mug nearing your mouth. I now must drink coffee from my travel mug
because he tries to get it whenever possible. While writing this he has visited about three times and gets up on
my lap to receive ear rubs and attention from me. He is like Jonah in that regard. Both Jonah and Cain need to
be in constant contact with me or at least do the occasional check-in if I am out of sight. All dogs received a
peanut butter filled bone in order to allow me to type this in peace.
We feel very lucky to have yet another wonderful dog from Second Chance and could not be happier to adopt dog
number three. After Otis passed I could not imagine getting another too soon. However, I am happy that we
waited for just the right dog as Cain is the more than we could have hoped for! Thank you to Julie for fostering
Cain and to the group as a whole for doing such great work bringing dogs in need to loving and forever families!
More updates soon!
10/05 - Cain has been adopted!
10/1/05 - Unfortunately Cain was surrendered back to rescue to find a new home. His last home said he was
too protective for their lifestyle and household activity level. They said Cain was perfect with all their kids and
their other boxer. They loved him a lot and did not want to risk him possibly getting into trouble with their busy
neighborhood and lots of people coming and going in their home.
More updates soon as he settles in here at his new foster home.
UPDATE 7/4/05 - Sorry it has taken us awhile to send an update on Cain, but he is doing great!!!! We would like
to thank his original owners for raising such a great puppy. We got Cain on father's day and he did great on his
12+ hour trip to Scarborough Maine. He is setteling in very well with our family that consists of 3 kids (1 boy 12 2
girls 7 and 3) and our 4 year old boxer Buddy. Cain and Buddy love each other so much, they play together, eat
together, and always sleep curled up with each other. We have a very large yard and the dogs love to 'box' chase
balls and bark at any visitors! Cain had no trouble adjusting, he ate like a horse from day one, he absolutley
loves the kids and gives them numerous kisses, and he feels at home in every rom and on every piece of
furniture. Cain is an unbelievable bed hog and he snores louder than my husband!!!! The dogs pick which bed
they want and we all adjust as needed. We have come to realize that Cain is quite the jumper! If we are outside
and he is in he will jump up on our kitchen counter or island so he can look out the window at us, it is really cute
but we have to watch where we keep our food. I will continue to send updates but I can asure you that Cain is
doing great and has so much love surrounding him and he always seems to be smiling. Your unfortunate loss
has become our newest love and we promise to give him a happy, healthy, and active life in Maine!!!!
UPDATE 6/22/05 - Cain is doin great!!!! He is so sweet, and kind, and loves everybody. Cain is very happy in
Maine, he has a lot of space to run and he has so much love. Cain is eating just fine and appears to love the car.
He is a great dog who loves our 3 kds and can't wait to go hiking!
6/19/05 - Cain was adopted!
6/4/05 - Cain is a owner surrender. His mom and dad are getting divorced so he had to get a new home. We
here at the Lodge are happy his Mom made the choice to send him to us. He has only been here a couple a
hours and has fit in well. Katie the queen usually doesn't like the new arrivals right away, but she seems to be
taking a liking to Cain. There hasn't been any barking or growling. I have Cain attached to the chair and Katie to
the Sofa. They have been trying to get to each other, they are only about 5 inches away, so they both lay down and
lick each others tongues. I think the two of them are going to be great with each other. Looks to me they will
playing a lot of tug of war. Cain is extremely sweet, he has taking a strong liking to my 10 year old, and him to
Cain. I guess I know who's bed Cain is going to choose. From my observation so far, Cain knows sit and lay
down. He is very well behaved. I can tell already he is going to be one that I'm going to miss. He will not be in
foster care long. So get your apps in ASAP.
