BUSTER
UPDATE 6/24/08 - Buster is still a great ambassador for white boxers. Everyone who
meets him remembers his name. He is now about 9 yrs old and has developed kidney
disease. However, we were fortunate enough to catch it very early in its progression
and have started him on the correct diet. His health is being carefully monitored by my
vet. With this care we hope to have him with us for a several more years.
He still has the most amazing personality and has endeared himself to the entire family.
UPDATE 11/5/06 - Buster is doing great. He has developed a health issue--a leaky
bladder. He is on proin. Buster cannot sleep alone--and another dog is not enough. He
shares one area He is real good about sleeping on one spot where we put extra
protection down on the bed for him.
He is up to about 90 pounds--he is not fat, just solid muscle. Between the walks and
my son playing ball and wrestling with him he has just put the muscle on. The vet is
quite happy with his appearance. Buster is actually getting known in town. We are
stopped on most walks because people want to know what breed he is. They all
comment on how handsome he is.
My daughter's 10 pound spaniel mix bosses Buster and our pit bull around. She is the
queen and the other two acknowledge it.
Buster loves our walks; he is patient with my for not being able to go as fast as he
would like (arthritis issues). He rarely pulls. He has gotten very good at looking at other
animals but not pulling towards them. He is also excellent at ignoring barking dogs. The
other week a dog we had not seen before came charging out at him. Fortunately, this
was a friendly dog who only wanted to play. Buster, who had been startled by the
sudden appearance, showed restraint and did not react to the dog.
Buster has only one problem that he is handling very well. Our cat, Gotti, has figured
out Buster will not hurt him. Consequently, Gotti likes to sneak up behind him and sink
his claws into Buster's legs. Buster just whips around and "talks" to him with the
growly sort of sound white boxers make. He loves to talk and has conversations with
all of us on a frequent basis. He is totally convinced he is a lap dog. I can't sit down
without him joining me.
We just love having Buster in the family.
UPDATE 12/19/05 - Buster is showing himself to be a first class food thief. Naturally,
he knows enough to not do it when there are any witnesses around. Tonight he stole 2
sticks of pepperoni. He is fine and still had no trouble eating his supper. He never gains
or loses any weight; I wish I could do as well as he does. He is doing fantastic with our
cat--appropriately named Gotti. He is my big baby and follows me around. He is sitting
patiently behind me (of course in my chair) waiting for me to finish so I can play tug of
war. He thinks he is my lap dog and spends part of next night either sitting in my lap
or stretched out in bed next to me. He has been real good with the Chrismas tree--he
has eyeballed a few decorations but only tried to pull down one and stopped when told
to.
He really is the best natured dog, just curious and mischievious. Personally, I find his
quirks funny and I am quite happy with my big white boy.
UPDATE 11/5/05 - Buster completed his obedience class and got his certificate. He likes
it and being out with other dogs in a controlled setting is good for him. He starts
another class on 12/13. He was enrolled in agility class but was asked to not return
after the first class--he did not play well with others. Buster did not like the other dogs
using 'his' equipment, especially 'his' A frame. Also, the more freely moving dogs around
him seemed to get his dominance nature aroused. Yes, Buster is proving to have a
dominance streak. He is not obnoxiously aggressive about it but he does like to
posture and stand over other male dogs and the occasional dominant female. He has
fitted in very well with my other two dogs. He and my pit have become very close and
are always together. He is also showing he has bonded to us and clearly is protective.
They recognize my children's friends and let them in but doesn't let them up on the 2nd
floor where my daughter is until she says its OK. He is not threatening; he just stands
in the way until my daughter gives permission. He has gotten to my son--he is the only
dog ever allowed to go in my son's car.He loves to go for rides.
UPDATE 10/13/05 - Buster is doing great. He is a favorite at his obedience class.
Tonight he outshined all the other dogs--and got rewarded with a new ball (his favorite
toy). He really seems to enjoy the classes and loves the instructor. I've enrolled him in
agility level one classes and he starts those on the 24th. He loves activity so much I'm
sure he will excel at agility. The trainer thinks he will do great and we are already talking
about doing some agility trials once he has enough lessons. I think he will love the
running and jumping around. He is still highly active but has been handling the 8 days
of rain much better than I've been doing.
UPDATE 9/22/05 - Buster is doing great and has settled right in. He and the other 2
dogs have become good friends. Buster and the pit bull, Ava, do everything
together--eat, sleep and play. When Buster wants to get her to play he often drops a
toy in front of her. Tug of war often ends with them both chewing on different ends of
a toy. Buster has turned out to be quite the counter surfer; he loves his carbs if he
can get them. He also talks a lot. Buster's conversations are a combination of barks and
a growly mumbling with a bit of a howl thrown in. After he talks he looks at you to
respond and then continues the conversation. Buster and I take 3 mile walks in the
morning and usually go for an evening walk. A game of ball inbetween walks is
mandatory (as far as he is concerned). He usually has a tennis ball in his mouth--he
often looks like he is chewing a large piece of green gum. We've gone to some
obedience classes. He is sitting well, has down pretty good and is working on 'stay' and
'heel.' Buster was quite hyper when we first got him but has relaxed since he has
gotten the idea he is home to stay.
8/12/05 - Buster has been adopted!
7/29/05 - Hello everyone--Buster her at the Riverview. Mom let me get on the computer since she has been so
busy. She says she has family coming in from out of town next week so she is spiffing up the house. I think it looks
great, but I am still waiting for a home of my very own. Rocky and Tika have been very nice to me, but I am a guest
here... Mom took me up to a BRAD in Brunswick last weekend. I do love riding in the car! A BRAD is where you get
to meet other Boxers and other people who love Boxers. I had a great time! Maybe we can go to another one soon?
I heard mom telling people that I have not had an accident in the house since my first weekend here (when I really
didn't know what was happening or what I was supposed to be doing). Now I know where I am supposed to "go",
so I do. Sometimes I have to wake mom up earlier in the morning than her alarm clock so I can go out, but she
doesn't seem to mind. I kind of moan, and bump the bed with my head, and she wakes up. There's always lots of
good food here, and I don't mind sharing dishes with Rocky or Tika. I know there's always enough to eat! Mom
gives us lots of treats, too, and everyone comments on how gentle I am when I take them. I am VERY gentle. Mom
says that I need to learn better leash manners, and I will as soon as I figure out what they are. Walking out is SO
much fun! I like to play in the yard with Tika, too or even with my own toys by myself, but not too much. And I don't try
to jump over the fence. Why would I? I like to snooze on the grass or on the deck outside. I like to snooze, period!
Mom lets me up on the couches now, and they are nice and soft. I like the dog beds, too, but they are not as soft as
her couches! I am a big boy, but I like everybody, and other dogs big or small, and cats. So give my mom a call if it
sounds like I am the Boxer man that you need to finish your family. I'm waiting!
7/18/05 - Buster can be 'updated'as Housebroken! Apparently Buster lived before in a home with either a doggie
door, or where he was kept outside while his family was away. His first day here, he was understandably confused
as he had had alot of changes. After that,he always knew that he was supposed to 'go' outside, but he had trouble
holding it for long enough. He would wake me up at night to go out, and needed to go out several times during the
day. Mostly that was OK as I supposedly only work part time in the summer. But I was worried that he wouldn't be
able to hold it long enough for a full day at work. I am no longer worried! I had an extra long day at work today, being
gone from 8 to 5, and NO ACCIDENTS! He was eager to go out the instant I walked in the door, but he had
managed! And last night he didn't wake me up even once to go out! Now I can say that he is perfect! (Buster even
prefers to do his business in the long weeds instead of the on the lawn--great bathroom manners!)
Buster even knows how to play by himself. I watched with a Jolly Ball in the backyard, and he was running, and
throwing and chasing and catching it all by himself. My friend said that she coundn't beleive that he was 6--he acted
so much younger and more energetic. He can run, and he is FAST! Inside the house he is a floor and couch potato
like my other two! Yes, he has discovered the couch. He does get off when told to, but like almost every other Boxer I
have known, the couch is a preferred location, with cushy dogbeds a close second--he likes those, too. Buster likes
everyone he has met, and everyone he has met likes him, too. Tomorrow he gets to meet the carpenter who is
working on my kitchen. And we'll get to find out if power tools scare him. (I doubt it, he is laid back about everything
else like vacuums and brooms.) I'm sure that he will put up a big barking show of Boxer watchfulness at the front
door, and am equally sure that Richard will be welcomed by my Boxer trio once he comes in. (Richard knows my
other two and is used to dogs.) I'll let you know how it goes!
7/13/05 - Buster is such a gentleman! He absolutely entrances everyone who meets him. A friend with a Cocker
Spaniel visited the other day, and Buster was wonderful with little Ginger. And he impressed my friend with his
easy-going demeaner and his good manners. My summer roomate likes him so much she took him off visiting
with her. He didn't get to go swimming, but he showed how good he is with little children, standing there wagging
his little nub while the 3 and 5 year old girls petted and petted him. Buster takes treats very gently, and doesn't
mind sharing his food or water with the other animals here. Unlike my two, he has no interest in watermelon--it is
one of their favorite treats. He loves to run in the back yard, chasing Tika around and around, but is very gentle and
considerate of my old Rocky. He found both the inside and outside toy boxes very quickly, and seems to especially
enjoy balls of all shapes and sizes. (He aslo likes to chew tennis balls into little pieces, but he hasn't chewed
anything else, so i don't mind.) Buster adapted fine to not being able to sleep in my bed. While he would like to join
me on the couch, he gets off when told to. We think he is a great guy, and are happy that he is visiting with us here
in Maine until his forever home finds him.
7/8/05 - Buster arrived at the Riverview after a short ride from the shelter. He loves the car, and rode copilot very
nicely. Buster met my Rocky and Tika like a happy gentleman and he has setteld in as part of the family already.
Buster lived with another Boxer and a Chihuahua and with children at his other home. He is the unfortunate victim
of a divorce, but otherwise seems to have been well-loved and taken care of. He walks OK on the leash, but he is a
big, strong boy. He is even as tall as my Rocky, but not as massive. My guess is he's around 75 pounds, and quite
muscular. Not only is he OK with dogs and cats, Buster is even OK with chickens! I have four hens, and they were
in the back yard when we arrived home. Buster noticed them, but had no need to chase. And I just brought home
four baby chicks tonight, and he was only mildly curious about them, too! Right now he is snoozing on the living
room carpet. It's about bed time--and his former owner reported that he slept on their bed. I hope he is as laid
back about not sleeping in mine as he has been about everything else so far! More news soon.
