TOBY is waiting for us at the BRIDGE

Writing this is the second hardest thing I have had to do in a very long time. The first was Thursday Aug. 17th, 2006, which is the day we let our boy Toby go to the Rainbow Bridge.  Toby was in a losing fight with Lymphoma Cancer, which spreads so very quickly there was hardly any time for treatment. We took him to the Emergency Clinic on Sunday July 30th, because he had a swelling under his neck.  They ran every kind of test, checked his urine, checked his blood, checked for worms even heartworms (Even though he was on preventive medicine), the only thing left for them to do was x-rays.  This was where they noticed a mass above his heart.  The vet was pretty sure it was Cancer and that was what was causing the swelling.  They put him on strong antibiotics incase it was an infection  (I think this was for our benefit, to give us some hope).  August 2nd we took Toby to his regular Vet and he suggest for us to take him to the University of Tennessee Animal Medical Center in Knoxville Tennessee.  We were hoping for a miracle to save our baby.  We drove 2 hours on August 15th, by the time we arrived Toby’s neck, lips, jaws and chest was really swollen with fluid.  We kept praying they could do something that might give us a few more precious months with him, but it just wasn't to be. After 8 hours of tests I saw Toby had had enough stress to last him as well as Me and Mary a lifetime. They also concluded there was no hope and the best we could do was to take him home and to make him comfortable as possible, and we most likely would know when the right time would come to put him down. So back home we came with our Toby to do just that. I knew I was not going to let my boy suffer in pain. The next day I took him swimming at his favorite swimming hole for a short while till I saw him getting tired, and the following day the 17th  we took him for a quite ride (he loved to go for a ride, which we did every day) and at about 4:45 pm that afternoon we had the Vet come to our home. As Mary and I set on the couch holding our boy in our lap the Vet sent Toby on his Journey to the Bridge. As life slipped from Toby’s body that afternoon he took with him a large piece of my and Mary’s heart that will never heal. Now our boy is at the Bridge playing with his new Buddy’s, waiting for Me and Mary to join him some day where we all will be reunited, then we all three will go to our forever home.  Toby will be missed so very very very much. Thank each and every one of you who wrote us about Toby. Your letters and sympathy was greatly appreciated.

- Toby is doing great & hoping to be in his new home before the Holidays!   He is perfectly housetrained, cratetrained, LOVES going for rides in the car (ever see a big 90 pound boxer do the "happy dance"?-LOL), walks great & loves EVERYONE he meets!

I took Toby to Pet Quarters in NH this past weekend for our Boxer Rescue Awareness Day & he loved all the attention he got.  Toby made many people fall in love with his big teddy bear personality & gentlenesss.  All in all, he was a great boy for the day, although he did try to get my coffee first thing as we were setting up, but I told him I was not ready for a caffeine-high huge boy in public!  (darn, I was REALLY looking forward to that coffee too!)  He was super curious to see all the other dogs come in the store & all the boxer friends from SCBR that helped out with the event.  The little dogs definitely were kitties in little doggie scented bodies in Toby's mind, so I had to hold on tight when they got too close to us as he was ready for the chase.  I did introduce Toby to the playful 6 month old boxer puppy of one of our adoptive homes while we were there.   Toby was very rough with Dallas & kept dominating & pinning him down.  After a couple times of this rough "play", poor Dallas decided Toby was not much fun! LOL  Toby was also great waiting in the car for me to do a little quick shopping.  He didn't make a mess & just slept in my seat, keeping it warm for the ride home on a cold day!

I did try to introduce Toby to a dog a LITTLE more his size (well, just over half his size!), my boxer Sandi.   That went about the same as it did with the puppy Dallas & I did not dare try working him with my 2 more dominant males or my other foster dog.  According to Toby's paperwork, he never lived with or had other dogs to play with.  By his actions I really think Toby will be best as an only dog & would not be a good dog park or doggie daycare type boy.  He is fine walking around other dogs on leash & is not nasty about it, just he does not understand how to play & is too dominant with the other dogs.  The great thing is Toby is wonderful with kids & people of all ages though & I do not think he would be any trouble if he was left out of his crate during the day as he is not the type to get into trouble.   Hurry up, this big gentle giant is waiting for you!

- Toby arrived today thanks to Barb & Tom for volunteering to bring him up to Maine.   Toby is a gorgeous neutered flashy fawn HUGE boy with cropped ears and a docked tail. He just had his 5th birthday on October 19th & weighed 107 pounds when he was turned into the shelter in October!!  He is down to about 93 lbs now & needs to lose a LOT more weight, but he will be still around 80 lbs when he is in good shape.  Toby was surrendered to the shelter due to his owners were moving and could not take him with them. His surrender information from his owners says Toby lived with kids of all ages (under 4 & up) & loved them all & was great with everyone he met.  They did not know how he was with cats or dogs as he did not live with any.

Toby rode great in the car & walks wonderfully on the leash.  He did meet my 3 cats tonight & he definitely is not a cat lover, unless you mean for LUNCH! LOL  I was able to get him into the crate with a few shoves & he settled in after a few complaints. I will give him some time to settle in before I try to introduce him with my dogs.  Watch for more updates soon on this big boy!
