UPDATE 9/21/04 - I can't believe that it has been a month today since we brought Skyla home.
She has moved in with all four paws and wiggly little butt and we love her to pieces. She made
friends with the whole family four pawed and two legged. They all love her too. Well almost all
- our two cats are none too fond of her, but they all keep their distance. Actually, she has done
one thing where the cats are concerned - Jeni ( our oldest-a gorgous long haired
Siamese/Himalayan) and our other little girl, Hanna (feral young cat Tortoise -adopted in Fla this
past winter) had not become friends until Skyla appeared on the scene. I think they think that
unity is the best defense against the interloper. They now even sleep curled up together. But
back to our new gal in the house. She eats well now that I have gone back to my old dog
formula - fresh ground beef or turkey cooked in a broth with rice and baby carrots. I buy it in
bulk from BJ's and cook up a batch, which lasts me about a week. She loves it and even more if
I add a little shredded cheese to it. Of course this is mixed in with her Neutro kibbles. She does
not like dry kibbles unless it is cat kibbles in their dish. She has eaten the dry but only under
extreme duress ie up in Rochester and I did not have her "stew" with me -did have canned food
but although she ate it, she was not overjoyed. We go for walks about twice a week - down my
hill and a couple of blocks or if we go with my daughter and her dog we walk about two miles
and back up my hill. She walks beautifully with the Gentle Leader. What a Lady! Sleeps with
me of course and is in no hurry to get up in the morning, which suits me to a tee as I'm not an
early riser. She loves to go with me in the Jeep and rides like a pro - takes naps and occasionally
gets up to look out the window to see if I'm going the right way. We have had quite a few photo
sessions and I have some really cute pictures of her and her pal Dante (granddaughter's gorgous
male Boxer). They have wonderful play sessions and have even had a picnic together in the
backyard. She has a new "simple black" collar for every day with an elegant crystal star in the
middle and her tags hanging down. With her "simple black" she is ready for any occassion as
every well dressed female knows. It also goes well with her Gentle Leader and leash. As for
toys, she has a few - sherpa like bone - squeeky ball - tug bone and a rubber tire with rope pull.
She is also awaiting a box from Germany with a few presents which has been sent from my
Grandson, who is serving over there. We can hardly wait see what he has sent her. We haven't
started her higher education yet but that will be within the next week or so. She already is a very
well mannered and obedient young lady. She always sits, stays and heels when I tell her. This
even when facing the two aforementioned cats.
Guess I have given you enough update or maybe too much - I have a tendancy to run on
Until next time
7/16/04- Skyla is still waiting for her new home to come along & snatch her up. You don't
know what you are missing! She loves to be petted & is a great cuddler. I know she misses
sleeping on the bed like she did at her last home, but I just have too many animals already
fighting me for my inch of the bed I get. I feel so bad, but she still has a happy spirit about
bedtime & shows me how much she loves playing with & showing off her toys to me (right now
her favorite is a stuffed gingerbread man). She loves getting scratched on the side of her neck
too. Skyla is perfect in her wire crate, completely housebroken, likes to cuddle in bed, loves to
ride in the car & walks like a dream with the Gentle Leader collar--what more can you ask for?!
She has shown too much prey drive with the cats though as she settled in, so we are going to
say no kitties for Skyla. So if you are looking for a cool brindle lady with a fondness for
cuddling & stuffed toys, hurry & call us now!
7/5/04 - Skyla had a great time yesterday at the SCBR 4th of July party at Nora's! She was
wonderful with all the people & kids she met & loved all the attention & loving she got from
everyone. One of the 3 year old sons of one of our volunteers' decided Skyla needed a walk in
the afternoon. Well (with a little help from Bill!), he went flying off with Skyla around the yard! I
do mean FLYING too-at one point he was airborne! LOL I had forgot Skyla's gentle leader,
which she is trained to walk very well on, so it was time for SKYLA to walk everyone else. :)
She didn't want anything to do with the other dogs there, but that is understandable as she was in
a strange place with people & other dogs. When it was time to try to snap some pictures of her
at the picnic, Skyla showed off how much of a HAM she is for the camera! She kept rolling
over & then rolling on the grass on her back, showing any trick she knew--anything to not sit still
for the camera! Poor Terry (our wonderful photographer) had a hard time getting the shots she
did. In the middle picture you can see her do part of her cute smile--the Elvis lip! Hurry & get
this girl on her way to your home--she's a sweetie looking for some cuddle time!
6/29/04 - Skyla is a really beautiful dark brindle spayed female pure boxer with cropped ears &
a docked tail that came into rescue a couple of days ago. Her owner very sadly & regretably
had to give her up due to personal reasons & just could not keep her anymore. It was a very
hard decision for her & she loved Skyla very much & vice versa. She said Skyla slept on her
bed at night & was great being left in the house without being crated. Her wish for Skyla is to
find a home where she is able to do those things & that is a quieter home too. Seems that Skyla
was feeding off her owner's stress recently & would react stressed too. Her owner said she
loves little kids but sometimes was not as good around older kids so she felt Skyla would do
best in a home without children & all that extra activity that comes with them. Skyla is a
dominant dog with other dogs but her owner said she does get along with most dogs after a little
time (Skyla's best friend was a Rottie!).
I have found she prefers to be the queen of the house when it comes to the other dogs in the
house & gets very jealous of attention given to the others, but she is not nasty about it (a little
"evil eye" goes a long way in doggie language!-LOL). She gets along with my dogs in the sense
she can be around them, but she just prefers to be your # one girl! :) She is great with the cats
& cage of cockatiels in the livingroom though & has no issues there. Skyla is crate trained to a
wire kennel & will go into her crate (all my dogs are crated when I work) but she does not need
to be & would rather not be. She is such a sweet girl & loves to be petted & rubbed. She will
even give you a snaggle-tooth smile with one of he lips getting caught up on her tooth (I call it the
Elvis or Billy Idol lip!-LOL). She does have a heart murmur, but is in excellent looking physical
shape. We will be reviewing her vet paperwork to see if she needs anything else updated. Sklya
just wants to be loved & be your best friend & cuddle with you in bed. Do you have room for
Skyla in your heart & bed? If so, hurry as she is another great catch you won't want to miss out
on!
