UPDATE 3/6/05 - Well, It looks like Shasha was not given a clean bill of health before coming
home to us. She still had/has heartworm...Her former treatments consisted of killing the baby
heartworm but still leaving the adult worms...Explained that because of $$ it's an acceptable
form of treatment but does not cure the heartworm. She should have been treated a different
way to be sure the heartworm was totally cured.
Also...Through an experience our vet had just recently had w/another rescue from the south,
our vet requested a speciman from Sha because hookworm & ringworm is rampid down there.
Sure enough...Sha also had hookworm. Not likely to get up here in the North.
Initally we took her for a routine visit & to have her checked over & the lump between the
shoulders looked at & to add to things she had a seizure the night before her appt. At her appt
bloodwork & samples were taken to perhaps figure out what caused the seizure. The vet visit
found she still had heartworm, also had hookworm & a routine physical exam showed tumers in
her mammory glands that need to be removed & tested. She is being treated for the
hookworm, & has an appt scheduled for her surgery, after surgery they will start proper
treatments for the heartworm so it doesn't put her at risk w/the anesthesia.
When her physical issues are taken care of we will provide proof of her being enrolled in formal
training. We dont want her to be enrolled & have her keep getting sick or have her be in
classes while uncomfortable & trying to recover.
We love her to death she is the sweetest dog & loves everyone. When she had her seizure it
was one of the most frightening things I had experienced. We felt so helpless. Was there any
record from where she came from down south as to what may be the cause of her seizure?
Was there any history of where she was taken from down south that may give us a name of any
vet she could have seen or someone that had her that could let us know if the was not the 1st
seizure she's had or give any history?
Any knowledge or names of someone that might have helpful history would be wonderful
UPDATE 1/23/05 - Sha is an absolute gem. We can't tell you how much we adore her. She
and her big brother Jack get along great now. We can leave them together w/o worry while we
are at work or the boys at school. Although Sha has her own bed they prefer share the throne
Jack once called his own to sleep on (our oversized ottoman). They are great at feedings and
even play together now. Sha thinks Jack needs a bath every now and then,so she likes to try to
give him one. Today we had to shovel the back so she could use the doggie doors to go out.
She has really come a ways w/the doggie door. Now she comes & goes whenever she feels the
need or urge to explore.
Sha loves the kids & thinks that they deserve lots & lots of kisses. We have to work on her
midnight madness though...she feels the need to let everyone know just how much she loves
them at 1-2 in the am making the rounds w/her kisses. Last night she did really well though and
didn't wake anyone up. We've also learned just how much she enjoys her food. She's gained
almost 10lbs since we've had her. I think it's time to moniter her eating habits. She loves going
for rides and really enjoys her walks with us & Jack. We also have reallized she's
EXTREMELY ticklish on her back. When you rub/scratch her back it stops her dead in her
tracks...if you hit just the right spot she even wiggles her little bottom...it's hysterical...we call
this "the Sha sha Sha" or "Shasha wiggle" .
She's doing well with her basic commands now too. She knows sit, down, off...we working on
stay, (she gets so excited)but we know she'll get it.
Shasha really only likes to sleep with us although the boys diligently still try to coax her into their
rooms. She likes to go to give her goodnight kisses...but then it's back to mom & dad.
Well...off to brave the storm.
Shasha & family.
UPDATE 12/30/04 - Our new girl is absolutely precious. We love her to death & she seems to
greatly appreciate the attention from all of us. She's full of wiggles & kisses. Our Bully Jack gets
plenty of them from her too. Sha was a great Christmas gift to us as much as a home was for
her. She had her very own stocking from her Foster mom Nora to open on Christmas morning
too.(Thanks Nora!!) The boys had fun picking out presents and a new bed for her although
Shasha seems to enjoy our beds a bit more though. We all get the giggles when she sleeps
(shhh, she snores & grunts) and it sounds pretty funny coming from such a dainty little thing.
She's was a bit confused at 1st about the mechanics of the doggie door, but it's been a week
now and she's figured it out. GOOD GIRL! She's let her new brother... our 112lb American
Bully know she won't be taking any nonsense from him! We don't leave them alone just incase
one wants to try to show the other up! She loves to play, go for walks & LOVES to go for
rides. I think she thinks of it as her own little mini vaca! As I write here now, she's letting me
know it's time for her walk.
We'll check back soon and fill everyone in on her newest excursions.
~Shasha & Family
12/23/04 - ShaSha has been adopted!
11/25/04 Happy Thanksgiving from the Last Resort!
Sha Sha is doing great and feels SO much better now! She is such a cute girl! The other night,
we were sitting here talking and she tipped her head back and woo-wooed for a good 30
seconds! We laughed ourselves silly. We decided it was a rebel yell since she came from NC,
lol. She was even trying to play outside with the other dogs, though I had to cut that short
unfortunantely as she can't do that much yet. It's so good to see her acting more like a boxer, it
just shows how crappy she was feeling before. Heartworm really makes them sluggish, plus
they lose weight, stamina and even their interest in everything. And so preventable!
Sha will have her follow up in about 2 weeks and we will have to monitor her for a week after
that, and then she will be ready for a new home!!!
11/3/04 Sha had her heartworm treatsments yesterday and today and seems to be doing really
well so far. We have to keep her very quiet while the worms dissolve and her body absorbs
them. She is a pretty calm girl, so it's not too bad. She will likely feel nauseated for a few days
from the immidicide.Too bad she has to go through this when heartworm is so easily
preventable!
10/30/04 Hi everyone- just a note to let everyone know that ShaSha arrived safe and sound at
my house and is settling in nicely!! Thanks, to everyone who helped transporting her today. She
is all set to start her heartworm treatment on Tuesday!
10/28/04 ShaSha has tested positive for heartworms and will undergo treatment.
10-26-04 - It's me! ShaSha again. Mom's at work and I wanted to tell everyone that she has
made the appointment at the vets for me to go and get "fixed" even though I still don't think I'm
broken. She says we will go Wednesday morning. I will have to stay overnight to make sure I
get everything done so I'm perfect and then my foster mom will come get me the next day and
we will go back to my temporary home. She says I might want to take it easy for a little bit and
get ready for my real Mom and Dad to come get me. Yippie!! That is even better than salami
or a hoofie.
I think my real Mom and Dad have found me!! My real Mom said she would wait for me to
get everything done at the vets. I'm sooo happy I just can't stop doing wiggle dances!!
Anyways, I have been busy "practicing" and now I know what "off" means. I have also been
having more fun out in the yard with my foster brother Bailey and our neighbor Griffin. We also
got to go
shopping. My foster mom needed my expert opinion on the bones they have so I tried a few, I
didn't know we were supposed to buy them first then sample them. The nice lady in the store
said it was okay and even gave me a few more samples to bring home. I gave one to Bailey.
So now the cookie jar is all filled up and now we are working on getting it empty so we can go
back for more. Maybe I can help my real Mom and Dad go to the store sometimes too! I like
to be helpful.
Bailey, my foster brother, has been letting me borrow his "gentle leader" so I can learn to walk
better on my leash and my foster mom's grass burns will get better. I don't really like it to
much, but it
is helping me and since there are sooooo... many other new things to learn it has been helping
me to remember so that is okay.
So I am expecting I will be going off tommorrow for my big adventure at the vets, then coming
back and getting a little rest, then hopefully going off to my forever home. I will miss Bailey,
Gus the
cat and Griffin the Black Lab next door, but will get to learn all kinds of new things in my
forever home and have what every boxer girl should be able to have - a real Mom and Dad I
can take care of. I am just sooooo... excited about finally going home. My foster mom was
right the day I met her after I had been traveling for what seemed so long. She said it was just
a beginning to get to where I really have always belonged. I just can't wait to get there! In the
meantime I hope the vet has some salami :) Hopefully... the next time you hear from me it will
be from my forever home when my real Mom and Dad send in an update.
10-20-04 - Hi!! ShaSha here. My foster mom has been very busy lately and she said that
some of the other foster boxers have been helping out by writing updates on how they are
doing and so she asked if I knew how. Well… I reminded her of what a smart boxer girl I am
and said sure I would give everyone a little update.
So… I have been here a little over a week now and I feel much much better now. It was a
long drive getting here from North Carolina where I used to live. It is a lot colder here in NH
than it was in NC and well... what is up with the trees. All the leaves are falling down, they
were still on the trees when I left NC?? It is okay, I am adjusting to the cold and it is lots of fun
to run through the leaves mom keeps raking into piles. Mom keeps nice warm blankets in my
crate so if I get chilly I can just go in there and take a nice little boxer nap anytime I want. My
crate is a nice safe place to go if I get sleepy or just feel like being left alone. I like it.
So it is nice to be feeling better. The medicine mom was sneaking in my treats must have
helped that nasty urinary track infection I had. Mom says the only thing left now is a visit to the
vet to be fixed. At first I though... "I didn't know I was broken"..., but mom explained the vet
would do something called spaying me so I wouldn't have anymore puppies. Sounds good to
me! Besides she says all the boxers are doing it. So she is looking into it. She said the vet
would also make sure I'm all up to date on my shots. I told her I already had them, but she
doesn't have the paperwork for anything except my rabies so they might have to be done
again. That's okay too because I want to make sure I am just perfect for my new forever
family. I just can't wait.
Last night someone called to talk to mom about me. I just sat beside her and patiently listened.
I was just sooo happy I did a little wiggle dance while mom told me everything they said. They
said they would call back tonight. Ohhh I hope they do!! I just can't wait!!! She said when I
find my forever home I still would get to learn all kinds of new things that all the other boxers
have been doing. She thinks I may have spent a lot of my past 5 years in a crate having a lot of
puppies. So some things are very new and exciting for me. Like… me and Bailey my foster
brother get to go outside and check out the yard and take care of any other business there is to
do out there. We like to chase each other around and sometimes we go over to the neighbors
house to play. They have a black lab named Griffin. He is really fun too, even though he isn't a
boxer like me and Bailey. Mom and Bailey have a cat named Gus. I don't really play very
much with him. He purrs a lot and always smells, well kinda fishy if you know what I mean.
Mom is glad we get along and I never chase Gus. It's more fun to chase Bailey or Griffin next
door.
This morning mom taught me all about belly rubs. They are just GREAT!! Everything is just so
wonderful. I just didn't know what I had been missing. There are toys, my favorite is the little
round soft squishy one that I chew on til it sqeaks and there are those things called hoofies…
what an idea!! My foster brother Bailey likes his with cottage cheese. I tried it and it is very
tasty, but I still prefer salami. Cheese is good also. A little peanut butter is okay, but well
nothing beats salami for this girl.
Oh Mom doesn't have a doorbell sooooo…. I decided that was an area that I could help out
with. Everytime someone comes to the house I get up and go to the door and give a little
bark. I wait to see the smile on mom's face and that is my cue to stop barking and so then nice
people come in and I'm very careful not to jump up on them, but I want them to know they are
welcomed so I give a little wiggle dance just for them. It is amazing because they all do the
same thing mom does. They pet me and say what a pretty little girl I am.
At night we "practice". Mom says it will be good for me to learn a few things so we "practice".
This involves salami so she has my complete attention. I have "sit" very well now. I'm getting
"stay". We are getting much much better at not pulling mom across the lawn. She prefers it
when I we have a loose lease. I have learned that eventually we do get there and it is a lot
easier on my neck and mom doesn’t get grass burns so it works well for the both of us.
There are a lot of benefits to be in a family setting instead of a cage all the time with puppies all
over you. I like to get lots and lots of hugs and give lots of kisses cause I'm just so excited
about all the changes going on lately.
Well, guess I have written enough for now. I think I will go take a little snooze in my nice warm
crate til mom gets home from work tonight. I am very anxious to find my new forever home, so
wherever you are please give a call. I like it here, but want to have a family of my very own so
I can give them lots of hugs and kisses and learn all kinds of other new things just like all the
other lucky boxers out there. So if you are looking for a really really sweet girl, check me out
and I will remind mom to get those pictures of me in here. Bye for now, hope to be hearing
from you real soon and when you come to pick me up BRING SALAMI :)
10/18/04 ShaSha is doing just great! This is my first foster so that has been very helpful for me
as far as getting everybody organized with her arrival. Yesterday was her first full day alone
since her arrival. After her breakfast and outside "things to do" I put her in her crate with a little
snack and she seemed perfectly content to take a nice little boxer snooze for the day while I
went off to work. She was full of wiggles upon my return and ready for her supper and some
more serious outside play. We had company stop in last night and she has great greeting skills,
full of wiggles but no jumping. She is getting along with my Bailey boxer. Gus the cat she just
kinda ignores. ShaSha would be perfect for a family where she would need to stay at home
alone while they were away at work. There have been no accidents yet and she went a full 10
hours yesterday, because I work an hour away from home. She gets along very well with other
dogs and pays no mind to cats. I think she would also do just fine if she were the only family
pet as long as she got lots of hugs and kisses. She has "sit" under her belt and we are now
working on "stay". She has taken a liking to one of Bailey's hoofies so we will pick her up one
next time we are out and about because my Bailey wasn't too impressed with her borrowing
his. So we just switched the hoofie out for two fully loaded kongs and everybody was happy.
ShaSha is really a very sweet girl. We will take some pictures this weekend and send them off
so everyone can see what a precious little dark brindle southern girl with white socks is.
