UPDATE 5/2/05 - Axel has been with us 4 1/2 months now. His personality has continued to
shine through. He loves to play with Leica and we're discovering toys that he'll play with. It's
fun to put a ball under a blanket and watch him retrieve it. Which he's very good at since he can
somehow slip his nose easily under blankets. At night, he often tries to slip under the covers.
We're still working on the seperation anxiety. He has more difficulty with it during the day then
evenings. About 2 months ago, I stopped walking the 2 dogs together because Axel was
making it difficult. It seems he was trying to be the leader of the pack. We're working on this
daily and have seen some good changes in him. However, I still have to walk him seperately
and we're being helped by a behaviorist.
Axel is an agile dog and I'm trying to find agility classes for him. He leaps off of our deck (a
foot off the ground) and could be a long jumper. Now that the snow is finally gone, him and
Leica chase each other around the yard. Axel doesn't let the deck get in his way, he leaps onto
it and off the other side. Axel and Leica also have snoring competitions and his jowls flutter
when he blows air out. Pretty cute.
He's a real sweetie and we hope to get the walking under control so that he stops acting like a
kook when other dogs are around.
UPDATE 2/23/05 - Axel, formerly RJ, is doing great. He's a real sweetheart. He's been with
us 2 months now and wow, has he changed. At the beginning he was quite uncertain about
everything even going through doorways. He's eyes were sunken too. Not anymore though.
This is a happy dog and very smart. He's doing great with obedience work and we've
introduced some agility activities too. Although, he's not quite sure of those yet. Our biggest
issue with Axel was/is seperation anxiety. We gave up on the crate shortly after adoption
because he had such high anxiety in there. We've worked at desensitizing him to us leaving and
we've had more positive moments than negative. Which is great. Axel and our other boxer,
Leica, have hit it off from the moment he arrived here. They get along great with neither
dominating the other. They love to play together and Axel loves curling up to Leica. She's so
easygoing with him. They both love going for walks especially romping in the woods. He's
doing great with the snow and seems to enjoy wearing his coat. Overall, his personality has
really started to shine through in the past month which has been great.
12/12/04 - RJ has been adopted!
12/04/04 RJ was surrendered to rescue yesterday. He was surrendered because the family was
having trouble crating him and he was getting in trouble. They also didn't feel they had enough
time to spend with him and were not able to get him enough exercise. Well I picked RJ up and
he rode wonderful in the car. He came home had a run in the yard, ate dinnner and settled very
nicely in his crate for the night. He barked for a minute and then I didn't hear another sound all
night. This morning he got up and went out to play in the yard with a couple other fosters. He
had so much fun. He played and played for over an hour. He then came in and had a little nap
back in his crate without problems. RJ is a beautiful fawn boy with natural ears and a docked
tail. He has lived with small children, cats and other dogs. I think RJ will fit into any family that
has the time and attention to give him.
