We had a office visit with his eye doctor today to see if his pressure in the eyes would stay the same with medicine or hopefully even go down, but unfortunately it did neither. It instead spiked extremely high so we knew he was in a lot of pain. I think Quigley was ready to end the fight because he just laid on the table and did not want to move. I was with him till he took the leap over the bridge. He gave me a kiss goodbye. I just want to thank everyone with all your help and encouragements. Again thanks and say a prayer for Quigley tonight. 01/21/05 Thought I would update you all on Quigley in case some of you are following his journey. He did not adjust to well to being blind. He became a little aggressive and even tried to nip at me once, but I think this is just from frustration and being scared. So I have been very gentle with him and trying not to get him frustrated. He also has messed in the house a few times but if I watch his whereabouts that can be controlled and is getting better. I took Quigley to an ophthalmologist and he said his eye pressure is at about 35 and that there is no chance he can get his sight back. She hoped that with medicine the pressure would come down. If not, well that I am hoping we will not have to deal with. He will be on medicine for about a month. Goes back on Feb 14th. Please keep him in your prayers. 12/2/04 - Sorry I have not written anything about Quigley lately. I did not realize how much he has come along until I had company for Thanksgiving and had a house full of people and another dog. I know it sounds funny but I even think his hearing has improved a little. It's that or not as deaf as I first thought. He sits on command now and stays if you put your hand in front of his face a few time with the command stay. He was wonderful with a house hold of company. Greeted them just as they came in the door without one jump and once everyone was here he just settled down behind a chair and slept. There was not begging for food before, during, or after dinner and there was no issue about feeding both dogs together. He really was a true gentleboy and a real pleasure to have around. I was a little nervous as this was our first holiday together. I did discover that his separation anxiety was much better with another dog in the house. We left them alone and there was not messing and they were both asleep when we came home. So I think a house with another dog would be wonderful or someone that is not away from home a lot. Please think about taking this boy home with you. 8/22/04 - Well, I am back from vacation and had a great time visiting with my cousin Shelby on the Lake in New Hampshire. We did put our feet in the water but that was about all we wanted to do. Not sure I understand the water thing, but I do think my Foster Mom and my Aunt were very glad we did not get all wet and then go in the house. For the most part Shelby and I lazed around in the sun and went for walks. I think I would be happy either as a lone dog or with other dogs. I like being with Shelby. The car ride was better then the last time. Still not crazy about being in the car but I can tolerate it better now. Maybe I am getting use to it. So as you can see I know I can fit in with any household that is looking for an older boy that does not need a lot of attention. Cannot wait to hear from you. Please think about adopting a senior baby. Bye for now. Love Quigley 6/25/04 -I thought for once I would take a stab at writing to everyone. My Foster Mom usually does this for me but I wanted to let you know that my summer has begun with a small camping trip with my cousin Lacey. See the pictures attached. We had a good time and I was very good. Lacey is my age so we do not play to much but we lazed around in the cool grass and we watched all the humans walk by with their children. I like camping and am hoping I will be asked back again. This time they might let me in the Motorhome ha ha ha.. I know my next vacation will be visiting my other cousin Shelby in NH. She lives on a huge beautiful lake and she was adopted from SCB so she tries to give me pointers on how to be a better boxer. The only problem with Shelby is she is younger and loves to play so I am sure she will trier me out some but that is okay. It keeps me young and trim looking. I am hoping to go swimming. Hope my Foster Aunt Chris does not read this as she does not like wet dogs in the house. So that is my summer so far. I will write again later. Hope you have a wonderful summer. If you want to take me on vacation with you I am very good. Just give me a call and I can have my bags packed in "bone" minute. Love Quigley 6/14/04 It has been three months now and Quigley is such a happy dog. We have been working on some of his bad habits and I am happy to report 99% have been retrained. The one I am working on now is with counter surfing. A cute story: Usually if Qiugley gets hold of something off the counter he will take it in the living room if I am in the den or vice versa. Well, the other day he came in the room with a deli container that was empty. Naturally, I shook my finger and he knew he did bad and put his head down and was wagging his tail so hard hoping for a small lecture. I was walking into the kitchen and he started to follow me when I remember the deli container. So I said "Quigley take your trash into the kitchen" and sure enough he turned around picked up the container and bought it into the kitchen. I was laughing the whole way thinking he would drop it in the hall or something but he didn't. Took it right into the kitchen and dropped it by the trash container. How cute was he...... So I had to give him a treat for being so good. We are learning some hand signals. He knows when to get down off my lap and knows the stay sign and he does very good. If you are looking for a great senior dog he is the one. Just wants to love you. 5/16/04 Quigley is starting to over come his car problems...... I have been working with Quigley regarding his car manners. He was not happy in the car. Although if you open the car door he jumps right in, but once you begin moving he starts moaning. Also when I left him in the car (Just to go pay for the gas I just put in my car) he would get all upset and pee. Well, we have been taking short trips and got him to go for about half hour before he would start moaning. My sister wanted me to come for a visit and she lives four hours away. I spoke to his vet and he suggested for a longer trip some medicine to relax him. When we started out for the first hour and half he panted and moaned but then settled down and sleep finally for the last two and half hours. When we returned he started out sleeping for the first two hours and then alternated between looking out the window and sleeping the second two hours but did not moan at all. I did bring his Kong which he enjoyed for about ten minutes each way. There was not panting on the way home so I think he was more relaxed. I also stopped and left him alone in the car for about ten minutes. I could see him, but he could not see me and he did just fine and no pee. For his first long trip I think he did a great job and hopefully will get him to really enjoy car trips. We will continue to work on this. 4/29/04 Quigley has been with me now for a month and has made tremendous improvement with his personality and his etiquette. He really is such a sweet dog that does not have a mean bone in his body. He very rarely barks. He does moan if he wants you to feed him or take him out to do his business. We are working on training. He will sit and lay down on command. When you pick up his leash to go for a walk he will just sit down and wait for you to put it on him. He walks so nice now and hardly pulls on the leash. Qugiley is waiting for his forever family to come and take him home so he can enjoy his retirement years. Please consider him. You will not be sorry. He really is a love 4/18/04 Quigley came through having all the tumors removed and the stitches were taken out this past week. All looks good and the healing is done and now just the hair where shaved needs to grow back. Quigley loves to go for walks around the neighborhood all the children know his name and love to pet him and he loves the attention. He gets told how good looking he is all the time. We are working on leaving him alone. He gets some separation anxiety in the beginning if you leave him out of his crate,( counter surfs) but then settles down and ends up sleeping in his crate. If you leave him in his crate he does just fine. Quigley is looking for someone to love and care for him in his retirement years. He is still young in heart and has lots of love to give. but does not need much. He just wants to be by your side. Qugley came to me on 3/21 very thin and with a few tumors and not neutered or clean. since then the Boy had been bathed, neutered and the tumors removed. He has gained three pounds and his personality is really sweet. He is such a low maietance dog. All he wants is to be feed, walked a litte, and be by your side when you are home. He loves to sleep. He plays well with other dogs and enjoys people. He is getting use to the car. I believe he is hard of hearing and blind in one eye due to gulcoma. We are working on his obiedience and with his hearing it is slow, but coming along. Going back to the vets on 4/14/04 so i will write again after he sees him. 3/21/04 - Quigley comes to us from a shelter in Brooklyn. He was a stray. Quigley is somewhere between 8 and 10. He is very skinny, has a very bad coat, and not so good teeth. He has two tumors that will be looked at very soon. We are hoping to have those taken care of with his neuter. Quigley has a very caring soul and you can see that he just wants someone to love and care for him the way he deserves. He has a horrible cropped ear job, I think someone did it at home. But other than that he is going to be a very nice looking boy. He also stunk to high heaven, I felt bad handing him off to his foster mom. I'm sure she will take care of that right away. Thanks to Liz for pulling him and driving him all the way to meet me. I'm sure this boy will be fixed up in no time and ready for a loving home to share his retirement. |
