UPDATE 9/11/05 - I know we hardly check in anymore, and Penny really is
sorry about that. She has such a demanding social
schedule these days. In fact, she can't remember if
she put in her yearly report back in May, so she's
sitting here with me and I'm dictating for her.

The main piece of news is that Penny is moving to
Germany in about a month! Yikes! Mommy and Daddy keep
trying to get her to be comfortable in her air-travel
kennel, but so far, she's very, very suspicious of it.
They've put treats and toys in there, they've sat down
on the floor with her and given her TONS of praise
when she goes in there (yet she always looks as if
she's only humoring us and wants to be out ASAP).
We've put her bed in there, which, instead of enticing
her in, actually made her mope and sleep on the floor
like a martyr. Daddy's even squeezed himself in there
to show her that it was really a nice place (for
someone about 1/4 of his size). If anyone has any
advice, please let us know. Otherwise, we'll just keep
plugging along as we are now.

Other than this, Penny has had a very good year. She
had a scary looking pink bump on her nose through June
and July (and the vet told us if it didn't go away by
the time vacation was over... scary things might
happen), but fortunately, 2 weeks of fun and relaxing
R&R at Grandma & Grandpa's house in Michigan had that
pink bump dwindling day by day until finally it went
away completely! Whew! Mommy, Daddy, Grandpa and
Grandma were all very happy about that. Penny and
Grandpa and Grandma became very attached to each other
during vacation. In fact, Grandpa almost didn't let
Penny go home with Mommy and Daddy when it was time
for them to go (she reminded them so much of Penny's
great aunt Tayzia, a grand old lady boxer who passed
away 2 years ago after living to a nice age of 14).
Penny was very sorry that we all couldn't just stay
together all the time. There's nothing she loves more
than having ALL of her people around her all the time.

Speaking of people, Penny enjoys being the Grand
Princess of her street. Everyone (and I do mean
everyone) on our street knows and loves Penny - kids
from 1 to 92, literally! During the summer, before all
of the kids went back to school, You'd hear a chorus
of "Penny! Penny! Penny!" coming from children in
every direction every time Penny came out for a walk.
Anywhere from 2 to 10 kids at at time would then run
to where she was standing, wiggling her little bum and
smiling a big, "Hello!" to everyone. Then she and her
"pack" would go for a stroll around the neighborhood
together. You wouldn't think boxers had much in the
way of herding instincts, but Penny always had to make
sure all of the kids were safely together and not
running away out into the street. Even now, some of
the kids will come over after school and ask if Penny
can come out and play. She loves that.

With all of these happy things, Mommy and Daddy are
just a little worried about the plane trip over to
Germany. If she can just make it there without having
a heart attack (please!) I'm sure she will enjoy
exploring Europe. The Germans love their dogs, and I
hear there are plenty of dog parks and places for dogs
to romp and play together. So, like I said, if she can
just GET there, everything should be fine.

We'll let you know how it goes!
Licks and Wiggles, Penny

10/02/04 Unfortunately Penny was returned to rescue.  Poor girl, this was through no
fault of hers as her last home was quick to point out.  Their schedules just changed
and they were gone from home for long hours and Penny was left alone far too much.
Penny walked right back into her foster home like she had never been gone and is
adjusting well.  You might have noticed that Penny is an older girl, but don't let that
stop you from making her part of your family.  She loves to cuddle really likes
attention and is a wonderful greeter when you get home.  Penny loves a good dog
bed, to sleep late and a good meal.  She likes to go for rides in the car and to "box"
with her people.  Penny never really learned to play with the other dogs and doesn't
have much interest in it.  She love however to jump around and box with you.  She
walks well on a leash and is not a puller.  Penny is a really good dog and deserves a
final forever home to spend the rest of her life in.  If you think this special girl is what
you need in your life get that application in today.

UPDATE 8/7/04 - Penny is doing great.  She and Rocky (my 10y/o cat) are getting
along better every day, except Rocky keeps trying to eat Panny's food!  Penny hasn't
even sniffed at Rocky's dish.  I took Penny to work with me a couple weeks ago
when we had a short staff meeting.  Everyone there loved her and she loved all the
attention too.  She also loves to ride in the car.  We went to our first obedience class
together last week and she did well.  She was very well behaved around the other
dogs.  I was told that she has been through obedience training with her last family and
it shows.  She has had a couple of minor health complaints, a UTI soon after I
brought her home and she picked up something in her paw which got infected.  The
UTI cleared up nicely with antibiotics and her paw is also doing well with additional
antibiotics and soaking twice daily in Epsom salts.  It it so nice to come home each
day to her wiggley greeting.

We have a return guest here at the Thunder and Lightening boxer retreat.  Miss
Penny (Ithaca) is back for what I'm sure is a short stay.  Penny had a loving home for
2 years but due to a change that they made, they felt she should come back to
rescue.  Penny loves people and really just wants a person to love and pay attention
to her.  She tolerates the other dogs here and just wants to let them be.  She likes to
play with people but when the other dogs start playing it scares her.  Penny is crate
trained but can be trusted out loose in the house and doesn't get into things. She is
also great with cats.  If your family wants a sweet little boxer girl who just needs a
person in her life to love her forever this is the girl for you.
