UPDATE 9/2/04 - Matt and I fell in love with Nala as soon as we met her. She is such a
love bug! Nala has adjusted to her new home very well. She has made herself very
comfortable especially at bedtime when she leaps into our bed and sleeps between Matt
and I. She is like an overgrown teddy bear. Nala loves to cuddle and has us convinced
that she is a lap dog. Over the past month Nala has met our family and their pets. She gets
along very well with everyone. Matt and I could not have asked for a better match. Thank
you SCBR!!! Nala has found her forever home!!!
3/12/04 Nala is doing great!! We feel like she has always been with us and our other
Boxer, Bogie. We love them both. She was 43 lbs. when we originally adopted her and
she now weighs 50 lbs. and looks much better. Nala has taught Bogie how to play and
they do so non stop. Nala no longer has any issues with sharing her food with others. She is
the boss over her brother, Bogie, though and he is a perfect gentleman and lets he have her
way. Thanks so much for rescuing Nala and letting us adopt her.
2/25/04 -On 2/11/04 Dona M. Marcham, Canine Behavioralist, Pocasset, MA did a
private lesson in our home with Nala. We worked on the
commands-sit,stay,down,free,hand signals, and recall command. Nala did very well. We
will continue to work on these commands each day until she is good at them.
1/25/04 - Paul and I (Sandie) drove up to Oxford, Maine to meet Nala. We were very
impressed. She is a 1 year old petite reverse brindle little girl with so much love and energy
she shares with everyone. We played with her and talked with her adoptive family for
about an hour before we left for home. Nala was well behaved and loved riding up front in
the truck with us even though it was a 3 1/2 hour ride. When we arrived home, Nala met
her new brother, Bogie, a 3 1/2 year old flashy fawn male boxer who is 85 lbs. At first
Bogie didn't want to share his home or his family with her as he has had ALL the attention
since he was 7 weeks old.. But in a couple of days, Nala won him over. She loves to play
and kept playing with him until he finally broke down and started playing back! Now they
do everything together.
We have a pet door that goes onto the deck and into the fenced in yard and the first day
Nala followed Bogie outside and she thought the pet door was GREAT! She's in and out
all the time now.
They love to go for runs at the Cranberry Bogs near us. They chase each other up and
down the huge sand hills and play hide and seek. When we get back home they take a
nap, then get up and start playing again. Before this, Bogie would want us to play with him
all the time. In the evening, Bogie, Nala, Paul and I sit on the sofa and watch TV. Nala
and Bogie take up most of the couch! Nala is a wonderful little girl and is always doing
something to make us laugh. She is very well behaved and when we say no she listens. At
night, the 4 of us snuggle up on the bed, with us having the least room. We tried telling
them to stay on the couch, but they just wait until we're asleep then sneak on the bed and
we find them there in the morning.
The only area she has difficulty is when she is eating. Nala will finish her food then go to
Bogie's dish while he is eating and Bogie just ignores her. But if Bogie goes near her dish
while she is eating, Nala will snarl and attack him. She also takes bones and toys out of
Bogie's mouth. Bogie lets her. I can put a piece of food in my mouth part-way and she will
gently take it from me unless I don't let it go, then she just backs off. So I know she only
does this with other dogs. My goal is to get her not to be so possessive of her food. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
1/19/04 Hi all, Nala here, my foster mom wanted me to write and tell you what I was
looking for in a forever home. So here goes. I'm not really picky I just want someone to
love me unconditionally, give me lots of treats, let me run all over the place doing just what I
want to do. Oh, Opps mom was reading over my shoulder. Let's start again. I need
someone who is home a good part of the day since I am still young and need to go out
more often. I also need a lot of exercise and have endless energy. I really like to play with
the other dogs here so if you have another dog that would be great too. Of course it has to
be a dog that likes to play or I would drive it crazy. I would play all day if the other dogs
would let me. I play just like a boxer and sometime get rough, the older dogs here are
telling me when that is not okay, so I'm learning to play nice. My foster mom says to tell
you that I like to cuddle too. Don't tell anyone but she calls me a cuddle bug. I know it's
embarrassing but what can I do she likes to cuddle with me. Anyway if you think I might
be the girl for you please let the people at Second Chance know because I'm ready for my
forever home whenever you are. I'll catch you later, gotta run and play. Love Nala
1/14/04 Hi all, One of the local shelters called today and asked if we had room for a little
boxer girl who had been found as a stray. Nala was found as a stray a couple of months
ago and been placed but it didn't work out. So this time they decided to give her to rescue.
Wait till you see this cute little girl she is adorable. Nala is a one year old brindle girl with
natural ears and tail. She knows some basic commands so someone has spent some time
with this girl. We tried sit, paw, other paw,and down which she went through without
hesitation. She met the other dogs and was more than happy to play. She seemed to like
everyone. We will see how long it takes the older two to get sick of the puppy play. China
is more than happy to play with her, although the size difference is laughable. Did I forget
to mention that Nala is extremely petite. She is really daintly with a tiny head and feet. The
shelter listed her as a year old so she probably has some growing to do still. Stay tuned for
more updates as we get to know this boxer girl.
