UPDATE 8/3/06 - It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of our Mugsy.
He died at home Monday morning, shortly before we were to bring him to
the vet. Muggs was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma in late June.We opted
to treat him with prednesone rather than chemo, as he was nearly ten
years old. We knew it was the end, Sunday, when his little nubby
stopped wiggling . We are glad he did not suffer.
When we adopted Mugsy just over two years ago, our goal was to give an
older dog a happy home for the rest of his years. I think we were very
successful in doing that. What we never expected, was that he would
give us so much more in return. He was sweet, loyal, comical & very
smart. Muggs was a very special guy... Everyone who met him instantly
fell in love.
Our lives are so much richer for having had Mugsy as a part of our
family. We will miss him very much.
UPDATE 6/16/05 - Mugsy is fantastic. This is a dog that loves life. Everything he does,
he does with gusto! Whether Mugsy eats, sleeps, plays, wiggles, gets into trouble or acts
like an angle he takes it to the limit. He has enough personality for two dogs. Since we got
Mugsy we have begun a desenstization serum series for his allergies- Mugsy is allergic to
lamb, rice,oats, grasses,carpet backing,dust and about 15 other things.Along with the
shots We have him on Wellness fish & potato food and we expose Mugsy to as little of
the allergens as possible;he is doing much better. He still gets a bit itchy, but nowhere
near to what he was going through last year when he would chew his feet until they were
raw. It took some time for Mugsy to accept Buddy into his life,as we had expected, but
now they get along wonderfully. Mugsy is happy, healthy and very loved. A pup can't ask
for anything better;nor can we.
UPDATE 9/25/04 - Here is Mugsy's 3 month update.Well,
Mugs has his routines firmly established and needless to say they are
now OUR routines, too. He continues to be a comical little fellow
who wins everyones'heart.
I went back to work this month and Mugsy has a had no trouble adjusting
to being alone
for a few hours each day.He is confined to the kitchen and we leave his
crate open with
a soft pillow in it;he seems very content.Mugs is a very adaptable guy.
We are truly the lucky ones in this deal!
UPDATE 8/25/04 - We just got back from our vacation at the beach. Mugsy had a ball;
lots of people, kids, dogs, sand and surf. Life doesn't get much better than that! Obedience
training has been successfully completed. It has been a valuable and fun experience for
both of us. Mugs enjoys working and is quick to catch on to something new.....Actually, I
think he already knew
everything he was taught and enjoyed pulling one over on all of us while being told how
smart he is! Hmmmm. Mugsy had a sonagram to check out his heart. He has a slight leak
that is
not a cause for concern at this point in time. His allergies come and go so we try to keep
him as comfortable as possible. Mugs is so full of fun, energy, curiosity & mischief that it's
hard to
believe he is 7 yrs old. He's a great pup to have around!
UPDATE 7/25/04 - It is hard to believe that Mugsy has been with us for only 1
month. He fit right in from the 1st day.I think it is sweet personality and his love of people
that made the transition so smooth. He wants to please and he has the perfect mix of
intelligence, patience, and circus clown. The very first thing we did was get a better grip on
his allergies,as mugs was practically chewing off his paws. The vet has done a great job in
making Mugsy comfortable. He does have a heart murmur but it doesn't seem to impact
on his health thus far. We are going to take a closer look, though. We have completed 3
obdience classes with 2 more to go. Actually, he seems to have already been trained
quite well(that or he is a genius dog!) because he knows all the basics and more. The
trainer is having him do more advanced work.I have to say that traing is a good way to
build a solid relationship with your dog and establish happy boundries-
plus Mugsyloves the sessions and his trainer. Although he is 7, Mugsy is full of puppy
mischief & quite a clown. So far, Mugs has stolen a basketball, soccer ball,a green rubber
ball,a bag of onions which he thought was a bag of balls(that is the last time he will make
that mistake). This boy loves to play ball! He can carry a soccer ball or basketball in his
mouth and because he looks so ridiculous no one seems to be able take back the stolen
goods. At the end of the day Mugs is a tired and happy pup who is ready to curl up in his
soft bed & get a good nights' sleep so he can be ready in the morning to make everyone
he meets smile. We are so happy we adopted Mugsy and we are very excited about
having Bailey join us soon.
UPDATE 6/26/04 - Mugsy has been adopted
6-3-04 - Mugsy is doing just wonderful. He is just another one of the clam. Today Joey
and his friend were playing catch with the baseball. Mugsy ran over got the ball and the
boys spent a good 20 minutes trying to catch him to get the ball back. If you say ball to
him he jumps up and down and gets so excited to play. Musgy has lost 10 pounds and is
fit and trim now. He eats all his food and more if I were to give it to him. He does have
allergies, which I had him tested and the vet says that they are airborne. We also are in a
new house, which has fresh hydorseed in the back yard. That could be contributing to his
allergy. The vet also said that the allergies could be from my house and that when he gets
adopted he may not have a problem. He is always licking his paws. I have been soaking
them daily in peroxide. Linda told me once the redness is gone then I can soak them in
vinegar and water, which will help the allergy. The peroxide seems to be helping. Mugsy
is just so wonderful that is breaks my heart that he doesn't have a forever home yet. We
are falling madly in love with him. I think that my husband is going to have a hard time
when he leaves. Mugsy like to lay in Ed's office. GET THOSE APPLICATIONS IN
5-5-04 - Muggs has continued to do wonderful here at Katierock Lodge. He just loves
to play with balls. He listens well and has become my shadow. He still doesn't like the
crate much, but he goes in with a little push and will bark if he knows I'm in the house.
When I come home he is not barking, he only starts when he hears my voice. He stands
by the door to let me know he has to go out. He is very gentle with all the kids in the
neighborhood. All of the adults just love him. If you are looking for a sweet lovable
companion he is the guy for you.
4-15-04 - Boy, has Mugsy come along way. He has now fit in the family like he has
always been here. He gets along fine with Katie and Rocky. I don't have to hold his
lease to keep him from jumping on them. He has learned that he is third in the rank here
and he has adjusted well. On Easter we took him to our friends house, they have no
pets. He was the center of attention and just played with their 4 year old.(Short Man)
He did a little counter surfing, but with all that good food, I don't blame him. He was well
behaved and they couldn't believe how good he was. (They are use to Katie and Rocky)
I let Mugsy out in the yard with Katie and Rock, he does his business and comes right
back in. He is now eating dog food and I don't have to put water in it. I guess he
decided that if he wants to eat, that's what he has to eat. He was sleeping on the floor
next to my bed, but since my husband is out on town this week, he has been sneaking on
the bed after I fall asleep. Yesterday I woke up wondering why I felt cramped, all three
were on the bed stretched out. Know wonder I felt cramped. Mugsy follows me
everywhere, even in the bathroom. I went to open the shower door, and it hit him. He is
just a real love. I believe he will be fine in a home with small children and other pets. He
is quite active. He loves to play only with balls. Yesterday my boys had blown up a
plastic glove and were throwing it back and forth to each other and Mugsy was trying to
get it. It was the cutest thing. The boys were getting a big kick out of Mugsy. We have
finally got a nice Sunny day today and I am going to take some more pics of Mugsy, if I
can get him to sit still. Look for more pics and updates and get those application in for
this sweet boy.
4-5-04 - Hi all Mugsy here. Foster Mom has been so busy that she hasn't had time to do
an update, so here I am doing it. I just love my foster mom, but this is just a temporary
home for me. You see I had a nice home but my dad lost his job and he couldn't take
care of me, so here I am at the Lodge. Foster Mom says that I have more spunk then
Rocky who is five. She thinks I might be younger then Seven. Foster mom says that I
am use to being the King pin and that I'm having a bit of a hard time with Katie and
Rocky. Katie is the queen here and I want to be the King. You see I just want to bother
them all the time. Katie and Rocky get mad at me. I also just want to be with mom all
the time. Mom will hook me to the chair and when I can't see her I bark. I use to not like
going in the crate, but I now go in when mom goes to work. I don't like it, but I go in. I
just bark for a while, but then I take a nap. I am now eating dog food, as long as mom
puts water in it. I also don't have diarrhea anymore, boy am I glad, I had a sore butt.
Foster mom says that there is a home out there for me. I just want a nice home where I
can give all my love and affection to. I love to cuddle and sit right next to you, almost on
your lap. I lay down when I'm told, as long as Rocky and Katie aren't around, I eat
when I'm told, and I love to go for walks. I don't pull on leash at all. I take treats real
nice. Somebody please adopt me!!!!!!!!!
3-29-04 - Mugsy is Fawn, Natural ears, dock tail. He arrived at Katierock Lodge on
Saturday, thanks to Cheryl and her children. Mugsy came from a shelter, his owner had
lost his job and home, and couldn't take of him. The shelter just loved him, they had him
in the lobby of the shelter greeting people. He has had diarrhea since he arrived. He also
hasn't eaten much. He seems to have been given table food. So he doesn't want any dog
food. He doesn't even want treats. I took him to the vet today because I thought he
might have worms. He was having blood in his poops. Dr. Tim said that he doesn't have
worms, just probably stressed. Introductions have gone pretty good with the resident
boxers. Katie the resident Brat is having a few problems with him, but I'm sure in time
things will work out. He is a big sniffer, that seems to get on Rocky's nerves a bit.
Yesterday I had Rocky and Mugs in the yard for about 2 hours. A few times he strayed
next door, but when called came right back to our yard. Him and Rocky just ran, and
ran, and ran. They had a ball. Sunday night I feel asleep on the couch at 7PM and he
was sleeping on the floor next to the couch. I had not taken him out to do his business.
At 2AM I felt a paw batting me in the face, he had to go out. Even with the diarrhea we
have not had any accidents. Today I put him in the crate when I went to work, he
doesn't like it in there. When I left he was doing a lot of barking. When I came home he
was quiet, but he had a raw nose from rubbing it in the crate. He has the cutest Mug,
which is probably how he got his name. He has a underbite, so at times when he looks at
your he has the funniest MUG. I believe Mugsy came from a home and he was the only
4 legged. He just wants to play and play. Mugsy also loves to go for walks. He doesn't
pull, he just criscross alot. He is also not a jumper or barker. When My girlfriend came
over on Sunday, he didn't even get up from the floor. If you are looking for a sweet
lovable buddy, who love to go for walks, MUGSY is the one for you.
