10/24/04 - Matilda just seems like too ‘old’ a name for this young lady, so we just call
her Maddie instead. Maddie came back into rescue and arrived here on Sunday night and
settled in quite nicely. Although she is only about 17 months and still a puppy by boxer
standards, she is very well behaved. She knows that she has to go to the bathroom outside
(big plus!) and is efficient about doing her business. She whimpered a bit when I first left her
in her crate the next morning when I went to work, but she seemed fine when I came home at
lunch time to retrieve her. She spent the rest of the day at work with me and rides well in the
car. She is going to see the vet tomorrow to get some medicine for her pink eyes, so weâ
€™ll see how she does there. She is an ‘on the floor’ dog but will occasionally ‘askâ
€™ to come up on the bed or couch by resting her head on the edge. A gentle ‘no’
sends her right back to her bed. The biggest thing she needs to work on is ‘come’
because when she is off lead and I try to get her back on the lead, she starts a little game of â
€˜stay away’ – she will charge towards me (good thing) but veer away at the last
second so I can’t catch her. She definitely needs some work on that! A quick trip to the
dog park was great until someone else dared bring their dog to the park and Maddie and I
made a quick exit. Luckily the woman had an adopted greyhound from rescue and was
understanding when I said I had no idea how she was with other dogs. The next couple days
though she had the occasion to play with a friends dog and all was well between the two.
She is a very sweet dog and won’t be around long!
10/20/04 - Unfortunately Maddie has been surrendered back to SCBR to find a new home.
Her
family had some serious personal issues come up that made it too difficult for them to handle
two dogs & 3 kids. Watch for updates soon from her new foster home.
UPDATE 9/13/04 - Hey everyone! Just a quick update on our Matilda. She has finally
graduated from obedience school:) Our trainer really felt that she needed alot of work and
time but she did it. Our little girl is a stubborn one indeed! She is doing well with commands
and we love to work with her and treat her when she earns it! The children love her dearly but
her fellow boxer and Matilda tend to get a little rough with each other but a quick "settle"
usually ends it. Matilda has also become very protective over our family never allowing so
much as a squirrel near our home. She is very silly at times. Overall, she is doing great!
UPDATED 6/7/04 - Matilda, or Mattie as we so lovingly refer to her, is doing well here in
NJ. She has certainly changed the dynamic of this family! The children adore her and her
canine sister is so happy to have a companion. She is quite a dominant pup and can annoy her
three year old pal at times, but we think that she will settle down soon. We are still however
having some issues with "accidents" in the house and are constantly on "watch" to make sure
that it can be avoided. She does very well with training but gets bored easily and then
becomes a little stubborn. We are now working on playing nicely with other members of the
family because she tends to get a little rough and nippy. She does not realize that she has big
girl teeth. One of my 17 month old girls (I have two) has learned to tell Mattie to sit. It's the
sweetest thing to see! All in all, we love her to pieces and looked forward to many years with
our new member!
4/04 - Madie has been adopted!
3/31/04 Little Miss Madie has really settled into her foster home. She is having a great time
with all her foster
brothers and sister. She is being a really good girl. She is now with everyone and enjoys
playing hard and then will settle for a little power nap. She loves the dog beds and lays on
them alot. She is eating really well and we would like to see her gain just a few pounds. She
is very tall and long for a 10 month old. She loves her foster dad and does so many funny
things to him that we both just laugh at her. She loves to get up in any chair that someone just
gets up from. It can be a kitchen chair at the kitchen table if her foster dad gets up to get
more coffee or the computer chair even if it is moving because it is on wheels. She will chase
after his shoes when he least expects it. She is so much a puppy and has alot of energy. It
makes me realize how much my own dogs have slowed down. They can't even begin to keep
up with her. She is crated during the day and does well in there. She doesn't love it but she is
getting to know that she needs to be in there when we are not home. She loves her peanut
butter filled marrow bone and is busy working on it when we leave. She has not had any
mistakes in her crate yet. We are working on her letting us know when she needs to go out.
We have not had any accidents in the house in two days so I think we are making progress
with her. Madie did meet a little 10 yr old neighbor girl yesterday and was wonderful with
her. The little girl just fell in love with Madie. She is so sweet and gives lots of kisses. Madie
will benefit greatly from obedience training. She knows sit, speak and give me five. Madie
will need her new family to be patient with her but also need to learn and stay on top of who
really is the boss. Madie is smart and will learn quickly on what is acceptable and what is
not. She is a love and we are just thrilled to be fostering her. She has changed so much in just
a few days that I really feel she is going to be a great companion to her new family. The
perfect home for Madie would be one with no cats. She sure has alot of love to give and will
be very dedicated to her new family.
3/25/04 - Matilda, who is also known as Madie has arrived at the Boxer'In on the lake. She
arrived last night from a temporary foster home where she did not do well with their cats.
Madie thanks her previous foster mom for her patience but she is now in a foster home where
there are no cats. Madie will need to be adopted by a home that has no cats. Now on to the
good stuff. She is adorable. She is a 10 month old spayed female with a nice bit of white on
her face, natural ears and a docked tail. She is a beautiful dark shade of fawn. She is also
very smart and will gladly show you her stuff. She sits, shakes and speaks for treats.
Someone has spent some time teaching her some general obedience. She does a fairly good
job in her crate. She slept good last night in her crate but she did cry for a short while before
settling down. She woke very early so I took her for a little walk and then her and I finished
our night out on the couch. She is nice and snuggly and loves the attention. She really doesn't
answer to her name so we will be working on that. She has met her foster sister and brothers
and does well but she does get a little dominant when there is excitement so we will work
slowly with her until she gets use to how the Inn works. She is eating good and has played
with her foster dad but no toys yet. Coming into foster care is a big adjustment for these
dogs. Madie will need a heartworm check, kennel cough vaccination and a stool sample
checked so we will get her into the vet in the coming week. This might just be the girl for you.
She won't be here long I'm sure.
