UPDATE 11/2/04 - We've come along way since Joe's been
here, he still hates being closed up in the crate. He'll go in and out and
take a nap in it, but God forbid I close the door.
Joe has always been a "velcor" type, but he seems to be adjusting to leaving
him alone now in. Aside from the wetting the floor from time to time, he's
getting better.
We haven't travel since our last trip to Vermont, but since he enjoys riding
so much it's almost time to do it again.
Joe is a BIGGGGGGGGGGGG boy! He's has long legs which makes him look large
and he looks great for an 8 year old! No health problems to report at this
time....thank god.
We are preparing for his training classes which will be great for him, more
activities together. At this stage of his life he has mastered all of the
commands and does them very well.....but,sometimes Joe can be alittle
stubborn, so a refresher will be well worth it.
Joe is a big baby and he's gives so much, but demands the same....his bath
time is one of our favorite times together, he actually speaks (growls) to
me while he gets washed. But my favorite thing that Joe does is after he has
eaten all that he can eat and his belly is full...he puts on a show! He'll
roll onto his back and dance and growl and show his appreciation, it's the
funniest thing.
UPDATED 09-14-04 - Mr. Joe is still learning how to be alone for short periods of
time. He still hates the crate and prefers not being locked up in it. I purchased a Kong
for him which tends to help until the peanut butter inside is gone. Recently we went to
Vermont; 6 hour road trip, he was great! He just loves to hang his head out the
window and catch as many smells as he can! He's a road warrior! Joe is pretty healthy
to be a senior dog. He's gassy at times. He'd let one go while he's sleeping and wake
up out of a sleep, look around as to say "Did I do that" Mr. Joe "Velcor" Boxer is
doing really well.
UPDATED – 8/2/04 Sorry we're a little late, but Joe is doing very well. He has
made himself very comfortable in my office and hates to be alone. We do have to use
his crate at times, but he hates it! As long as he can be near me he's fine. We'll have to
continue to work on that because the barking he does is very loud and he needs to
learn that I'm coming back. He great around children and has become very
comfortable around the seniors here at the apartment complex. Joe is a big boy! He
loves to hang is head out of the window when we're out for our drive to the park. It's
a sight to see when those loose jaws are flapping in the breeze! Joe is extremely smart
and listens well to commands. He can actually open his crate to go in for a biscuit (the
door isn't locked) but doesn't want to stay in it long with it closed. The month has gone
by pretty fast and we're still learning about each other. So far all is well with his health
and soon we'll be taking a road trip to Vermont. This 8 year old baby is very
protective, man do I love this guy. Till next time...
6/23/04 - Joe has been adopted!
Joe is settling in here at Burlington boxers. He is a
large, dark brindle boy who is exceptionally loving
and gentle. He is the most patient soul!!
He is a little 'clingy' at the moment, probably
because he has been moved around a bit. This morning,
I was greeted with lots of kisses, wags, and a very
wiggly, bendy kidney bean dance. He is very energetic
for an eight year old boy.
5/6/04 Joe is a good eater and he loves his cookies. To
soothe him while he is in the crate, he has a Kong and
liver paste. He loves it! We will continue to work
with him to help him be a little less of a velcro dog.
He gets along well with Heidi and Zoe, they steer
clear of him because he is so big. He's not
overweight, but tall, with a big head. He is a
gorgeous boy, as you can see from his photograph.
If you are looking for a gentle, quiet, sweet boy, Joe
Boxer is your man!!
4/5/04 My name is Joe Boxer, or Joe-Joe, or Big Joe, heck-I answer to all three! I'm
a handsome, mooshy faced boxer and I wanted to have my own say on here. My
foster-mom has told you only a little about me. I like to have my back scratched,
often. I like to have my head rubbed and my ears stroked. I like long naps and a
good meal, too! I also like a nice walk so's I can stretch my legs, sniff a few trees and
STOP sign, water them for good measure. You know, I am just an all around cool
guy to be with. I can kick back and relax with the best of 'em. If I sound like your
kind of guy, let me know. I'll be right over. A nice peanut butter sandwich and cool
bowl of water, soft bed, and you got yourself a friend!
3/27/04 Joe is now with us three days and a nicer boxer you can't ask for! He is
gentle and listens very well. He walks great on the leash and knows basic commands.
He has had a big of upset stomach, but is doing much better this morning. He went to
the vet yesterday and she gave him some fluids and a medication to calm his tummy.
Friday we gave Joe a bath and he was a real champ! He stood still in the tub and let
us lather him up and scrub him! He seemed grateful when it was done and he smelled
so much better! He let me trim his nails, which are still long, unfortunately. The quick
has grown very long over the span of his life, due to lack of regular trimming. I will
work on them and see if we can get the nails a little shorter.
Stay tuned for more on Joe in the days to come.
Joe Boxer has come to stay at the Jumping Bean Jungle for a while. Joe is from a
shelter that we deal with frequently and they seem to have taken good care of him.
His owner surrendered him to the shelter due to a change in living arrangements where
they could no longer keep a dog.
Joe is a big brindle boy and seems to be a tad out of shape! We will take him on
some good long walks while he is with us. He seems to get on ok with other dogs.
We have our own two, plus one other foster and they all seem to be fine with this
arrangement.
He is a little disoriented this afternoon and I am sure he wonders what is going on! As
we get to know him a little better in the next couple days, I will update him further.
So far, I can pet his head, ears and touch his feet without issue. He will be getting a
bath when Daddy gets home from work. He is probably over 80 lbs and I need a
hand getting him in the tub! He needs his nails trimmed and we will see he does with
that as well. Stay tuned for more on this big boy.
