UPDATE 3/24/05 - Jackson has started to demonstrate symptoms of a heart problem. We have been
to the Vets 3 times concerning this issue. The initial event whcih demonstrated a problem was jackson
collapsing when he was outside playing with another dog in my yard. He "fell" into a snow bank and
when I got to him a few seconds later he was fine, got up and resumed playing.
Apprx. 2 weeks later he lost coordination most noticable in his hind legs and seemed disoriented. This
episode lasted for apprx 1 minute. We went to the vet the next day. The vet listed to his breathing
pattern and rest and again after some excercise to determine if she could identify the arythmic (sp?)
pattern. She was unable to hear anything except the murmor. She said a basic EKG may be able to
show the arythmeia, and further explained of the ECHO and vest monitor. Tuesday this week Jackson
went for the basic EKG which didn't show anything. Last night Jackson had the worst attack I have
seen. He had been with me for most of the day and was completely normal. When we came home he
follow did his business then sniffed around some tree's in my front yard. When he noticed I was going
inside he came up and met me at the door. When he went inside he collasped, peed, pooped and
threw-up while he was having "siezure" like movements. It seemed like he was choking, and his tongue
became pale. This lasted for no more than a minute but it was considerably more sever than i have seen
before. He tried to get up, was very wobbly, then he was fine. Back to normal, happy, panting, ect. I
went to the see my vet thins morning, saying I wanted to pursue the vest monitor option. She is checking
on the availability and cost for this procedure. They do not have a cardilogist on staff at my local vet
facility. She said history lends itself to BCM, but they cannot medicate until that is confirmed or other
possible caused/diseases are eliminated. I was reading the midical info link on BCM through the website
learn more about BCM and options. I read that some clubs have Holter monitors available for members
and non-members. Do you know of any clubs that have these monitors? Or recommneded locations or
specialist in the central NY area? I know Cornell is close but I know they can very $$$$. Money isn't
the only issue but it certainly has to be taken under consideration. Any help or suggestions is greatly
appreciated.
Thanks.

UPDATE 3/5/05 - Things are still going well for Jackson. Jackson has been with us for just over 2
months now. All systems are fully functioning- eating, sleeping, etc. We haven't started our obedience
training yet so I cannot report there. I initially had signed up for individual lessons but after a few
incidents, I feel that the socilization aspect of a group session would be beneficial. On two occassions
Jackson has been overly aggressive towards other dogs, not out of control but enough to make me think
that a group sessions would be best. The earlisest group available starts the middle of March.
Jackson is the best companion dog I have ever seen. He really just wants to be with me all the time. He
rides along with me alot in the truck. He gets all nervous every morning when I'm leaving for work
wondering if he gets to go with me today. If He see's me grab his leash, he know's he in and then the
nervous turns into all sorts of boxer wiggles and excitement. If I don't take him with me in the morning
and I come home for lunch, he is napping on the couch. The morning process is repeated as I leave
again.
Since my update last month, Jackson has discovered and become infactuated with the wildlife that share
our outdoor. He saw a rabbit and has since become quite interested in these little creatures. It presents
quite challenge because he dosen't like to go into the snow as he gets cold. It is really quite a laugh if he
see's something, starts into the snow, then jumps back out and barks and jumps and whines.
Things are going really well overall. Thanks to everyone who makes these wonderful dogs available for
adoption.
UPDATE 1/26/05 - Hello from Cazenovia.
Jackson joined our household the a few days after Christmas and everything has been going great. He is
a great big lapdog. He seemed to settle in within the first few days of his arrival although it took 4-5 for
his appetitie didn't fully return. I could not have aksed for a more pleasant experience with my first
adopted dog. My girlfriend and I still cannot believe that his former owner, or anyone who came in
contact with this dog could ever abandon him. He relatively inactive and sleeps alot and I have yet to
find a toy that even begins to catch his fancy. He is more content to snuggle up on the couch and take a
nap. We usually go for long walks on the weekends and he is really well behave towards other poeple,
dogs, x-country skiiers, etc. One the first long walk I was a little concerned by the number of times he
squatted to poop. Honestly he must have defecated 6-8 times and attempted 6-8 more with nothing
comming out. Prior to this he had been making regular bowel movements a couple times a day. We
went for another walk on Sunday and the behavior continued. In addition I was also concerned about
his rear right leg that seemed more sensative to the cold than his other legs. These things combined
encouraged me to take him to my vet. The vet gave him a full check-up during which Jackson was a
very well behaved boy. The vet said he has a heart murmor and roundworm. We talked extensively on
the heart murmor characteristics, symptoms and safety precausions. For the round worm he gave a
dose of medicine to kill the adults worms, I will be administering the second dose today to eliminate the
eggs that were unaffected by the treatment and can now be effectively eliminated. We will be giving
Jackson a monthly treatment to prevent internal worms. The vet said he outside of the aformentioned
itmes he was a very healthy boxer- no arthritis, mites, fleas, etc.
After a few weeks of letting Jackson settle in to his new home, I have started taking him with me on my
sales calls a few times a week for 1/2 a day or so. He rides very nicely in my truck. This gives us the
oppertunity to visit parks that we wouldn't normally get to visit.
I had to leave town for a few days last week for work. My girlfriend to Jackson with her to visit her
friends family in Vermont. They absolutely fell in love with him. Her friends family is actually in the
process of getting a boxer puppy from a breeder. The father said he only hopes his dog grows up to be
like Jackson.
As for the obedience training, we will be starting next week. While this is our "off season" at work, we
do a lot of training, planning etc during this slow time. I haven't had two consecutive weeks with the
same schedule since Jackson has been home.
I would like to thank everyone involved with SCBR, especially those who responsible for bringing
Jackson to our home. We are both very happy.
Until next time-
UPDATED 01-06-05 - Everything has been going great with Jackson. Casey and I picked him up from
Vanessa 1 week ago Wednesday. He really is a great dog. After we got home on the first night and he
sniffed around everything in the house, and quickly settled in. He started out with his chin resting on my
knee where I was sitting on the couch, after a few minutes of getting his head petted, he put one paw up
on the couch & looked up at me with the "do you think there is room for two up there" look on his face.
I invited him up on the couch and then learned he is really just a big lap dog. He didn't have much of an
appetite for the first few days. Friday night he finally started eating. He has had no accidents or caused
any problems when left unattended. I gated him in the kitchen with his bed, food and water for the first
few days, since then I have let him have the run of the down stairs (minus bathroom etc). When I come
home for lunch and from work at the end of the day, he is usually sleeping on the couch. Vanessa gave
me a few days supply of the food she was feeding him. I purchased the same brand over the weekend
and his appetite continues to improve. I've learned he likes to have somebody in the kitchen while he's
eating. He's eating 4-6 cups a day now. Vanessa guessed he was eating approx 6 cups at her house.
We haven't found any toys that he is particularly interested in and some treats he could care less about
too. We'll see how he continues to settle. He seems to be a little sensitive on his back right foot. Since
winter finally arrived here the last few days, he sometimes stands with that foot raised, and for the first
time this morning, he was running without using the right hind leg. I checked the foot out, there is nothing
physically showing and he doesn't limp at all when he does use the leg. I'll make an appointment with my
local vet regardless. Jackson has met my brothers dog Austin, Casey's family dog Sullivan, and last night
he met my parents dog Phocas. He is casually interested in the other dogs and certainly not aggressive
towards any of them. Phocas needs to learn some manners. I invited my mother and Phocas to join
Jackson & I at the obedience training.
12/29/04 - Jackson has been adopted!
