not to good with strangers and strange dogs, on our walks we cross the street a lot. with
in the confines of the house he is fantastic. he completed his obedience traing last week,
thats why i'm a little early this month checking in. i'm gonna try to include his paperwork
with this update.
UPDATED 3/20/04 - evander's doing real good as long as he does'nt run into strange
dogs, he gets irate and it takes a few minuts to get him to focus back to me. he's a real
good dog, gets along well with my other dog and 2 cats.
UPDATED 3/2/04 - vandi's doing well. he and jack are getting along fine. he is a little
tuff on the walks, but that will straiten out. he's a guy who wants to please. he's had
couple obedience classes so far and he's bonding with me real good. i sent a donation to
diana last week and included copies of paperwork for his license and training. i believe
that i'm current in my obligations in my contract. thanks for giving me a great dog.
UPDATED 1/28/04 - hello, evander is doing fine, he and my ten year old boxer are
getting along fine. for about 4-5 days evander was a little too enthusiastic whith my cats
but now he does'nt even pay attention to them. evander is working out just fine except
for his snoring so he's been banned from the bedroom, he sleeps on the couch most of
the time. now i tried to call leann yesterday, i left a couple messages but she never
returned my calls, so i'm hoping this email will suffice.
UPDATED 1/19/04 - Evander has been adopted!
12/24 T’was the night before Christmas and all thru the house,
all the boxer were snoring, no covers left for me or my spouse.
Two dreamt of biscuits and toys by the score,
under the tree on the front porch floor.
One, tossed and turned cause his dream was different, he must confess.
He wanted a forever home for Christmas!
Oh, he was happy here, even content,
but he knew he was “foster,
and knew what that meant.
A real home of his own, with an owner to love.
His own bed and toys, and a food bowl, full up.
What joy, what excitement, what total bliss,
if he had a home of his own for Christmas!!
But no one had called, it seems no one knew,
what a great friend he would be, and a “good dog too!
As the hour draws near for Christmas morning,
a though slowly in his poor head is dawning.
No new home for Christmas, no new bed or bone.
It’s all he’d asked Santa for, a home of his own.
Well, there was another holiday fast approaching,.
If someone called quick, he might have good cheer.
And be in his new home, to bark “happy new year!!
11/30 Well another month has come and gone and Mr. Evander is still with us. He is
such an easy dog to be around. All he asks is all your love, most of your lap, a nice
place to nap in the sun, and well, everything in the house that is edible! I truly believe this
poor boy was starved for some portion of his life as he is so food oriented. He is
definitely not the athletic type but when you see him romp after being outside in the cold
weather he can bring tear to your eyes you are laughing so hard. He is not a kisser, but
he is a champion snuggler and cannot wait for “dad to come home each evening
so he can be in his lap on the sofa while he watches TV or reads the paper (dad that is,
not Evander). He may have a little gray on his face, but he has tons of unused love in that
big ol’ heart of his……and he’d love to give every bit of it to you!!
10/30 Ok, Evander, enough already with the table snitching!! Today he got into a bag
with “medicated cat food cans, and I had “slightly dented, but totally
unlabled cans scattered all over the living room and a packet of “cat antibiotics is
nowhere to be found!! Another call to the vet, who assured me that the pills were â
€œweight “ gauged doses and since Mr. E is over 95 pounds, he can afford to have
ingested all the pills (10) with no ill effect (and the side bonus that any infection that might
have been even “thinking of starting up with him has definitely changed it’s
mind!! Lol) But what I really want to know is, can I now expect him to start â
€œmeowingâ€ or looking for a really, really big kitty pan??????? With “Evander
the great in your house, there will never be a dull moment, that is for sure!! And of
course he just looks at you with those big sad boxer eyes in that teddy bear face and
you cannot stay annoyed with him, honest!
10/21 This cold damp weather has not been very pleasant for Mr. E. He has been on
the grumpy side lately. He has, as mentioned before, not (apparently) had an easy life
and has many scars indicating that he spent more than his fair share (or more than any
dog should) on cement , and thus, I think, has more than a touch of early onset arthritis.
So, he is apparently a bit on the ouchy side. He has growled a bit at both my teenage
sons when they were trying to “help him onto (or off of) the sofa. Poor guy
doesn’t like his joints bent for him when they are achy. Because Evander is a little
on the “fussy side about this kind of thing, he probably would do best in a home
without young children who might bump or bend him in the wrong direction and cause
him pain. As we all know, a dog in pain can be a bit “snappish and we don’t
want to take the chance on someone being “pinched, or Evander being in
unnecessary pain.
10/15 Well Mr. Evander sure does like to make my life interesting! He is apparently a
very observant boxer boy, and noticed where I kept producing those yummy vitamins
from. So, today, while I was running errands, he knocked the ceramic pitcher (yup
ceramic!) off the counter and he and JR helped themselves! (I know Toby was not
involved because he doesn’t like them). So, I came home to an amazingly
unchipped jar and two smug if guilty looking boys. I called the vet, since they had
consumed approximately 60 vitamins between them. She said she didn’t think it
would hurt them but maybe I should “induce vomiting just to be safe. I would
like to mention here that boxers do NOT like having 3 tablespoons of peroxide poured
down their throats, and thus, it is not only a somewhat bubbly, but fairly messy
procedure!! Poor boys really gave me some hurt and “betrayed looks as there
wonderful treat, was abruptly removed!! Well, as you can imagine, the vitamin jar now
lives on top of the refrigerator!!
9/30 Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed Evander’s letter. He really worked hard to
write it for you. Evander the Great is a little sad. His best buddy, Chika-Marie was
adopted on Saturday and now he hasn’t got anyone to tussle with. JR and he have
an “understanding, “racing in the yard is ok, but I don’t wrestle with
anyone but my brother Toby (funny that rule seems to change from foster to foster).
And for some reason, when Evander invites Toby to play anything but Tug, Toby seems
to think he is challenging him, since Toby is a big scardi-cat, he always leaves the room.
Evander stands there looking so perplexed, “what did I say, is it my breath??
So, Evander would really like it if you would adopt him soon, so he can come home to
play. How ‘bout it? Got your application in yet?
9/25 This is Evander, mom said I could write cause you are not getting the message,
from her, that I am the perfect dog for you!! I am handsome and although large, I am
very loving and sweet. I am not a kissy boxer in case you think because my mouth is so
big I might drown you with love!! I do like to play. I like tug and chase it and I romp
around the yard too!! I like to be a couch potato though, I am not the kind you need to
take on a long run to tire me out. You might have to carry me back and you’d have
to be in really good shape for that!! I get along with all the dogs here, especially little
Chika-Marie, she and I tussle and face chew and stuff all the time and I am very careful
not to hurt her. It is a little weird how she loves to sit on my head and chew my ears,
though. Good thing she doesn’t weigh too much!! Mom says I had to tell the truth, if
I wrote you ,so you should know, I LOVE to eat and am a bit of a “snarker. I
have a little bit of a begging problem, and I do check out the table a lot. Mom says she
thinks it’s cause I am on good food now and don’t get nearly the quantity I am
used to eating. I also like to check out the biscuit box and if it’s opened ,I sneak
one, hee, hee,. Don’t tell the other dogs, ok? Mom says I am not always “gentleâ
€ when I take snacks, but I am learning to be something she calls “soft mouthedâ
€, like the other boxers. So if you are looking for a big, soft, teddy bear of a boxer
friend, who doesn’t need to be exercised ‘til you drop (like that Chika-Marie) I
am here, waiting for you to come and take me home! Hoping to meet you soon. Your
new best friend to be, Evander the Great!!
9/15 Evander says “Hi and wants to let you know he is feeling much better, and
much more safe now. He has gotten the idea that even though he has to spend some
time in the crate, he always gets let back out and that there are treats to be had. He is no
longer barking or whining if crated when someone is home, waiting patiently for the
others to finish eating so he can get out and go check their dishes for “fall out (he
eats at warp speed and is done way before the other dogs!!), and there are no more â
€œdrool poolsâ€ when I come home from running errands. He is just waiting for his
meds to be done so someone can come and take him to his forever home. “Sooner
than later, please! (he is a very articulate boxer).
9/12 Evander is feeling a little better after being on the antibiotics for a couple of days.
He is starting to romp a bit, which is quite an impressive thing to see. He is playing with
Chika-Marie and showing some interest in toys. His main focus in life has been and I
think will continue to be food. Evander will do pretty much anything for a treat! Lol He
seems to be a little stiff at times, I think from spending so much of his life either outside
or on cement. He is in his own stoic way, affectionate and likes to have his pets, like any
boxer, but he is not a kissy boxer by any means. He is still a little “held back as if
waiting for the other shoe to drop. (when will I go to the shelter this time, type of thing).
He is settling in a little more each day and I am sure with time will feel more secure in his
new “situation
9/10 Evander went to the vet and although still a big boy, he’s not quite as heavy as
we thought, he weighed in at a “petite 103.5 pounds! Lol Evander has the start
of a cateract in his right eye and his puffy gums seem to be a genetic thing. He also has a
touch of phnumonia so he will be on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. He has settled in
nicely andor is playing with and getting along with all the resident “critters. He
does have an over fondness for the biscut box and since figuring out that everyone gets
one after final “outs in the evening, has been campaining heavily for this to be
changed to a biscut every time he comes in!! I think he’s a little miffed that I am so
dense and don’t grasp this great concept by now!
9/8 Well Evander has arrived at the Inn. He is what one would have to call the Giant
Economy Size Boxer. Weighing in at around 100 lbs., he is a fancy fawn with a docked
tail and natural ears. Evander comes to us from a shelter. He was treated there for Lyme
disease but since he did not respond to the antibiotic normally used for Lyme, but did
respond to another drug, it may not have been Lyme. We will consult our vet about this
and an apparent (very) inflammation on Evander’s gums. He is, we are told, 6 yrs
old. He has a lot of crate or cement calluses and some scaring, so I would say he has
not always had an easy life. He is a very friendly guy, who loves to be petted and belly
rubbed. He is a fairly vocal boy who lets you know he needs, he leaves it up to you to
figure out exactly what it is he does need, though. He has been introduced to the other
k9 residents without incident. He does not care to be in his crate and is pretty vocal
about it. If you ignore him, he does settle down, so I think he will be fine when left
crated, when home alone. He settled in so quickly with the other dogs that he was
allowed to sleep in the bedroom with us, uncrated last night. He did feel the need to
wake me at 4:30 to go out and 2 out of 3 other boxers agreed that this would be a fun
thing to do (ugh!) So, tonight I will make sure that Evander goes out for his last â
€œbreakâ€ a little later than last night, then maybe we can all sleep in until 5:15, when
dad gets up to go to work!! Lol More on Evander “The Great, after a vet visit
and a day or two to settle in.Evander has arrived at the Inn!! Wow, what a giant
economy size boxer he is (should be adopted thru BJ's or Sam's Club!!!) He is 6, but
acts a little older. His head is huge and the rest ain't to small either, weighing in at
between 95 and 105 lbs (haven't found anyone who can lift him onto the scale yet!! lol)
More, and photos once we get to know him a little.
Evander with petite 42 lb.Chika!
