UPDATED 7/22/04 - Cosmo Stant-Reppy Jr. I, his his new "show" name, he still goes by
Cosmo though. We love him so much it hurts. He snores. Our boy Rooney started out a little
insouciant, but now he loves Cosmo. They sleep snuggled up together. Cosmo is so
accommodating, he doesn't shove Rooney out of the way for attention, he just shares
everything and provides little reassuring kisses every once in a while. He eats like a champ, 4
cups and almost a whole can of Canide every day. Cosmo swims too. I mean this dog seems
to live to please the people he loves. He's very special. He has met the neighbor's dog and
likes her, he has met almost the whole gang at the dog walking park and loves everyone. One
problem on the dog walk is he is very eager to be an out fielder in the summer soft ball
league. The only time I have trouble controlling him is when he sees the softball games. I
would love to let him loose to see if he could catch a fly
ball. Anyway, thank you new friends at second chance! You all are angels.
UPDATED 6/04 - Cosmo has been adopted!
6/27/04 Cosmo continues to charm everyone he meets with his excellent manners and happy,
playful personality. Here at the Riverview, we have only good things to say about our current
guest! And as he continues to fill out (by filling in the spaces between his ribs) Cosmo gets
handsomer by the day. I particularly enjoy watching Cosmo walk and run. His long-legged
gracefulness is poetry in motion. That's why he won the doggie-lottery here to see who gets
to walk downtown today to pick up my truck after servicing. My Rocky is too old to walk
that far. Cosmo continues to show us that he knows a Boxer's job is to inform his person of
all potential threats to the household. He is great "watchdog" inthe traditional sense. He pays
attention to the noises outside the house when we are inside. and lets me know when he hears
something. Then he lets me decide what to do about it--which is usually to welcome the
'company'. Then it's one big Boxer wiggle after the other, because Cosmo LOVES company!
6/15/04 I found out something that Cosmo DOESN"T like--squirrels! He will chase the
squirrels off of my deck when they come to steal birdseed. Yeah Cosmo! (I don't like them
either) And he will sniff at my chickens when they wander past outside the fence, but does not
try to get at them--which is nice since I have lost a few to other fosters. It is really hot and
humid up here these past few days, so everybody is less active and drinking lots of
water--including me. Last night it was so cute to see everyone sprawled out in the living
room, snoozing and snoring away. Cosmo is definitely gaining weight--hooray! His ribs are
still prominant, but his hip bones protrude much less. And it is great that for someone who has
missed as many meals as he must have, he has not the tiniest bit of food agression. He can
even share the pots and pans with my two. It's Tika who has to be the hog! Some friends
came over to visit and help me put in my new pool liner. They brought their cute little Cocker
Spaniel. Cosmo was good with her, although she had no interest in playing with him. So it's
not just dogs his own size that he likes!
6/11/04 Cosmo is doing great! He still needs to gain weight, but otherwise is part of the
family already. He has met kids, dogs, adults and my cat and chickens with no issues. He
loves evrybody! My son was over visiting and was thrilled to have 'such a young dor' to play
with. He refused to beleive that Cosmo is supposedly 8. I can't beleive it either. This guy
loves to play--balls, rope toys, squeaky toys, other dogs. I don't mean that he is hyper,
because he is fine at home alone (with the other dogs) while I am at work. No misbehaving!
No accidents, and no chewing or anything--he is a good boy. ok!" And he knows a Boxer's
job--let your mom know when you hear or see 'something', and then settle right down and
welcome the visitor when mom says "It's OK!"
6/8/04 6/8/04 - Cosmo had his heartworm test and is negative for heartworm and Lyme
disease--which is great since he is form New York ewhere they are very
common. Other than commenting on his emaciated state, the vet noted that he
is in good health and good shape. With one exception--his teeth. Either
someone filed down his teeth, or he has worn/broken them. It is very
possible that he ahs worn them because Cosmo is not enthusiastic about being
crated. It may well be that he spent way too much time in a crate in NY.
Here he is learning that a crate can be a safe and comfortable place. In
the meantime, he is a very well behaved man so he has free run of the house.
No accidents, and he gets along wonderfully with Rocky and Tika. He
actually met them a little earlier than I had planned--he leaped over the
baby gate in the kitchen while I was out of the room for a moment, and when
I came back all 3 were happily together in the living room! He is very
active and athletic. In fact, he overdid it a little yesterday, and he is
limping a bit today. I have a big fenced in backyard and he can RUN! He
plays and plays! I have never had a dog who was so playful--he always has a
toy in his mouth. And he will bark at his ball when he's playing. He is
just too cute. Now if I can just put some weight in him! (And keep it off
Tika at the same time!) He has a good appetite and I am feeding him at least
3 times a day. He gets a serving of dry kibble, topped off with a cup of
rice, which has been tastily boiled with chicken or beef. We at the
Riverview are noted for our fine "Canine Cuisine". Yummy! I got my first
kiss from this sweetie today, so I know he is comfortable here and relaxing
after his Shelter ordeal. My Boxer-loving vet said I "ought to adopt this
one!" He is a great guy, and again we are lucky to have such a wonderful
guest.
Cosmo has arrived at the Riverview Boxer-hostel. He REALLY wants to thank Ralph for
saving him from the shelter in NY, driving him home for the night and then driving to
Springfield Mass to meet Donna. She met me in Lowell and now here is here! What a
cutie--and does he LOVE to play with balls! He even played with his Smiley Face ball in the
back of the truck on our way up here. Cosmo is quite thin. Hopefully we can put a few
pounds on him. Other than that he is good condition, and is neutered and UTD on everything
except a heartworm test. Cosmo has a little bit of stress-diarrhea, but has had no accidents in
the house. He has snuffled at Rocky and Tika through the baby-gates and will have the
opportunity to meet them in person tomorrow. With his activity level, he should help Tika
take off a few of those winter pounds! Cosmo is supposed to have been an owner surrender,
but no information about him (other than his name) is available. He is a gorgeous classic
docked and cropped fawn, of the long-legged variety. He has a black mask and a white
chest. He is rumored to be eight years old, but he is not graying, and he hasn't stopped
playing since we got home! If he's really eight then they have some doggie fountain of youth
down on Long Island! More to follow as soon as we learn more about this gorgeous guy!
